thank you for those photos, my dad was a survivor from the 1946 (3yrs old lived in the area that was most damaged) then in 1960 tsunami. He always tells me stories. now i can put your pic's and his stories to realize what he went through.
This is excellent, but it also needs to be done for the May 23, 1960 tsunami as well. That one gets far less attention than April 1, 1946, but in fact it caused far more damage to the city of Hilo, and is the reason that so many of these 2010 views show open land now. After it occurred, the decision was made to abandon large tracts that had been repeatedly destroyed - that's why parts of what had been downtown Hilo are now parks.
awesome.............have you done other parts of the islands...not so much as a tidal wave documentary but just as a past and present ....i think a lot of people ...old timers and young ones alike would be eager too see the changes of their home town where they grew up ........
You guys do fantastic work! I was attempting to do the same thing. I also tried to measure certain landmarks so I could accurately estimate the height of the tsunami as it was photographed in certain areas. It was a lot of work though and I never got around to finishing it. I have been studying this tsunami forever and yet I have never seen that photograph of Waipio Valley after the tsunami. How amazing it would have been to have been there as it happened.
Great pictures. Good to show people what could happen. After the last two scares we have had in Hilo I am afriad people will not respond when it really counts. The fact is it will happen again. It would be great if someone would do the same for the Kona side and some of the places that were his along Waikoloa area towards Hualalai.
