I've been telling people that for years that Bruce Lee in ETD scene was Mantis hand techniques and not Wing Chun, although he did study WC but he incorporated a lot of both Northern and Southern Praying in his hand techniques.

Ya but see.. it is wing chun as well.. different forms of Kung fu use similar moves, in fact, the back fist in jkd and the wing chun way are identical, even the parry with the outside PAK and the low to high CHOP CHOY GUA CHOY are all found in various forms like CHOY LEE FUT and others..

Wow, that was one of our signature moves in American Kenpo, nice to see it being universal, and being around for a really long time. It's more proof that the body can only move in so many ways.

    1. Seize your prey 2. Eat the head.. in jkd we call the bung choy a GUA CHOY just like Madame wing chun who I believe borrowed PAK SAO and BONG SAO directly from your art form

I noticed Northern Praying Mantis and Xingyiquan(形意拳) are quite similar, which leads me to believe that Li Luoneng, the founder of Xingyiquan, was skilled in Northern Praying Mantis before he met Dai Longbang. Most likely, he took the concept from Xinyiliuhe(心意六合) and transform Northern Praying Mantis into Xingquan.
For example, Beng Chui(崩捶) looks like Zuan Quan(钻拳) in both form and function.

Nah. I do them both. Hands are different. Both are very aggressive and forward pressing though. Mantis uses more angles and side step-in. Xing Yi is more linear. Both favoring a nice 60/40 stance for fighting. Mantis a more traditional turned/angled half horse but higher. Xing Yi the modified "hips forward" San Ti.

As a mantis practitioner who was also a student of the late Jesse Glover(Bruce's first student), northern mantis has their own version of sticky hands ;)

I’m a wing chun and jkd artist and I highly respect and study mantis whenever possible.. could you enlighten me on a few details,, I know that our GUA CHOY or BACKFIST and PAK SAO you have.. the slapping hands and the backfist, I’m curious if they use a subduing hand like our FOOK SAO covering hand from the SUI LIM TAO form.. 😎ty!

I’m sorry I don’t know Siu Lim Tao so I can’t compare the two.

I'm an 8nstep mantis practitioner(which has the footwork of Ba Gua and palms of Ba Gua and Hsing Yi). We don't use the term gwa choy, but our backfist is done horizontally at a slightly upward diagonal angle from the opposing side of the body towards where the strike lands . As for pak sao? Again, we don't employ that term but instead of simply slapping from right to left horizontally like a WC man would do, ours starts the same but once the hand goes from medial to lateral, it sort of drops in a downhard circular spiral sort of like the lower hand of what a Hung Kusn guy does in a Fu How. This is 8 step mantis.. I cannot comment how a 7 star, 6 harmonies ,Wah Lum, or plum flower mantis practitioner does it.
