I'm a mantis practitioner, from the UK, I've trained here a few years ago. It is a great KF club, and the style I find is; as Mr Wang described deeper and richer the more you study it. I have an opinion that martials arts are difficult to pass on, and it's possible you'll only get a surface understanding of the applications. By which time you may not appreciate what you had been taught. Also instructors don't always know or show the deeper aspects of applications. This has been missed. It's the essential part of any martial art training. For mantis and other arts to survive it's a fine balance of practical applications and traditional focus on forms. Which can become an empty performance. I continue to train in Huddersfield UK with the Tanglang academy. My master was taught from this school. I wish the Penang club well, and hope that they continue into the future. I hope to return for a class soon.

I agree. Personally, I found that studying Shuai Jiao and Qin Na has helped me tremendously in recognizing efficient, practical applications in traditional forms. Moves that in the past seemed obscure and impractical now reveal their usefulness, and this has given me a whole new appreciation for traditional Chinese Martial Arts

Thanks for posting this. This fine art must not die. When a lineage dies out it is like the death of a language or culture. That particular note in the symphony of styles will not be heard anymore. We know that time means change, but for countless years human beings have always tried to preserve things that have deep meaning and value for future generations and have withstood the temptation to discard the old while reifying only what is novel. Bless these dedicated few who carry on with this fine art.

Many profound observations in this video. So true about modern culture not being conducive to a pursuit like Kung Fu. It takes a lot of time and discipline to learn, as she said, and our culture is training people to only pay attention to blurbs and headlines, or videos showing the biggest explosions, and the fastest most dramatic visuals. We need to take every opportunity to encourage and teach any young person who will pay attention for a moment. Thank you for posting this!

I believe that mantis kung fu has principles that are very effective in combat if applied properly and if practiced and trained with the intent to end a fight in seconds or find a quick escape from conflict. We see that hooking grabbing plucking clinging or sticking used with conditioning speed joint ligament and tendon manipulation is very effective and a unique aspect of mantis. The issue is often that the practitioner only trains the movements and not the principles and harder aspects that take longer to cultivate. That being said I also believe that learning other styles of martial arts can be beneficial especially if we incorporate the principles we train in Tang Lang Kung Fu.

I studied a soft/internal style of Wing Chun after years of frustration with harder styles. I was always the smaller guy, barely 150 lbs; and I couldn't compete with heavier/stronger people. After taking up Wing Chun, I learned about lines, angles, leveraging, trapping, redirecting, etc. I'm not the baddest man in the land, but I have successfully ejected rowdy drunks from the restaurant on more than one occasion without anyone being hurt.
After watching this video, I absolutely agree with your assessment. There are a lot of solid techniques in Mantis Styles. I feel like I found long, lost family.

People should realize that this art is closely related, probably precursor to, or heavily integrated into other martial arts such as FMA's Kali, eskrima, panantukan, Bornean Kuntao, many silat styles like Lian padukan, buah pukul, beksi and many other.
These shows that this art is historically very effective at "street level" either on its own or integrated into other arts.

I love it .These guys are real. When I was training in Wu Chi Chuan . Or Wu Chi Tao after you have attain a black belt level the first form we practice was from 7 star mantis style . I loved it was only one form and it's at a more basic level . But the techniques with the hooks & drilling fung Yin Fist to the eyes . People always talk crap about the things they don't understand . In all actuality some of the techniques the MMA wouldn't let you use in the fights you can't finger strikes or use the mantis finger ranks across the eyes . I don't know alot of the 7 star mantis but feel blessed for what little I do . The style of mantis could be stacked up against most of the different Arts out there it is fare from tournament Art styles and practices .

Actually this style is adaptable for boxing. Using long guard in boxing, i have stance of a praying mantis. It is good for trapping and blinding vision of my opponents. I believe this art still can be adapted, not fully maybe but there are definitely useful tools. I respect that school.

Do you guys practise sparring? I used to live near the Penang Chin Woo school in the late 60's. There were 2 sub- groups there- one group trained in many kungfu styles but they only learned the movements. The students were charged 50 cents per month! The other (smaller) group was the Praying Mantis group. The students were charged RM3.50 a month. They not only practised the moves but sparred with each other everyday.

That's like us in Choy Li Fut. I've been in both full contact fights in private with no one watching us and also with an audience, and I can tell you that they are TOTALLY different. Not even close to being the same. For example, I fight really well in private but am lost when in front of an audience. I cannot explain why it's different, I really don't know the reason, but it is.

    • @shengchenfan
      @shengchenfan 3 роки тому +1

The reason is in front of an audience there is a pressure to do well and an embarrassment if you lose, where as in private, you don't have to pressure of the audience expectations.

What means illegal. Well at tournaments fight they have rules. In street fighting there exist no rules. For that reason the traditional martial arts was created for protection and survive. In a sports fight they used safeties. By using that no application is possible. For that reason the question if which style is better, a modern style or an traditional style is nonsense, what the most people do

They don't do any punches nor kicks neither. Watch this video again and you can see they only pose the punches and kicks. We don't pose the punch, kick while doing pattern taolu, we really punch and kick imagine there's an enemy ahead striking at right spot with speed, strength, accuracy. There were floor fighting & grappling too. Also in old days we use open hand gloves way before Bruce Lee in the 60's. These corrupted masters & disciples are best at lying and blaming others over own corruption led to dying business. I mostly disagree. I think that traditionally CMA is very good for street fights where you can attack the neck, spine eyes etc. They're not geared towards boxing or MMA fights which still have some rules (tho not many). It does seem to me that many CMA styles are not very good at protecting the head which may be why Tang Lang was so successful with the hands higher and in front.
Also sad that CMA became a Wuxia driven business by the late 1800's and the type of "MMA style training" was replaced by more and more forms.

Dude! You forget how Mantis kung fu came about. Who invented Mantis kung fu and how? Why? When you answer those questions, you'll also have an answer to why you can't apply Mantis kung fu in practice. That is why there is less and less interest in kung fu. Throughout the history of kung fu, you have been waterdown kung fu into forms and artificial movements that are inapplicable to any kind of fight and even self-defense, and you practice them like a ritual, and that's why your style dies.

@@ErnieLam19 Thank you for the clarification! I would agree that if you look at sports that blatantly box the fighter into fighting by rules that disallow many of our combat responses, we would not be considered a "combat sport" by them. I am an old man who has trained for over five decades and remembers a time when "combat sports" were less restrictive. Good luck to my brothers in Penang! I hope things turn around for your school. :)

It don't attract the young cus it's not practical in the day and age. I'm sorry but a boxer, mma, Thai boxer, kickboxing, wrestler would destroy these martial arts.

@@malakatan3235 then the art is gonna die out cus u don't understand the origin and what it used was historically. And the argument it depends on the person is a false narrative because if you put styles I mentioned before, they beat a person of traditional marital arts 99% of the time.
