      I agree wholeheartedly with you. Melodic guitar with excellent songwriting. And, of the troupe of guitarists that Ozzy has had, Jake most closely reproduced live the esoteric compositions of Rhoads without imposing too much of himself into it. Later guitarists were less honest (or capable ?) of that.

    This video showcases his soloing but he was an incredibly clean and precise rhythm player as well, and his writing is phenomenal. He's so good it is ridiculous. Remember also he doesn't use a whammy bar either so whatever sounds he is creating he is doing it without a whammy.

    • @oilcan00
      @oilcan00  10 місяців тому +15

      So So true! Rhythm playing is soooo overlooked regarding the 80s players. He is an incredible rhythm player. There are tons of 80s shredders who are average Rhythm players....EVH was great...DeMartini is a great rhythm player as well. And he has to get credit for not using a Tremolo....his left hand vibrato is insane. He used to say when players get stuck...not sure where to go...GRAB THE BAR....it would bail them out. He thought it was lazy....he could make all the same sounds with out the bar.

      Absolutely agree. I think Jake is in the same league as Randy. And those divebomb effects are done by both pushing on the headstock so hard as to bow the neck, and by detuning several steps flat with the machine head/tuning back to pitch on the fly (which is NOT easy to get so perfect every time as Lee does). Insane technique.

    His work with Badlands though short lived was stellar. For a lesson in blues rock shredding look no further than 'Rumblin Train' and the main riff on 'Silver Horses' is still one of my favorites

    100% agree! Jake is my all time favorite guitarist and Ozzy guitarist. I love Randy and cut my teeth on many of his tunes, but Jake to me technically was a cut above. To this day, I still have a hard time playing Jake's stuff. He was crazy clever and crazy good. The Ultimate Sin is my favorite Ozzy record, and I sure wish it would get a remaster. I think that was Jake's finest work, along with the 3 albums in Badlands, and his solo album Fine Pink Mist. World class stuff.

    What has made Jake unique and outstanding is that he plays not only technically but also basically. I mean he has mixed the taste of 1980s and that of late 1960s - early 1970s. He sounds thrilling and stable. A thrill and stability are something opposite, but he's got them at the same time. That's why I think we've never gotten tired of his playing for 40 years since Bark at the Moon.

    Rhoads will always be #1. His writing was plain composition level due to his study of theory & background in classic compositions. BUT, Jake will always be respectfully #2. No arguing these facts as still to this day Ozzy's set list is pretty much Sabbath, Rhoads, & Jake.
