      Hey John, let’s face it, with nearly everything we do, there’s something to overcome, if we’re exploring new ways of doing things. Certainly if I make another of those, I’ll do it in a slightly different way, with less issues 😁😁😁

    Wonderful turning with a beautiful result. About three years ago I bought a piece of Lignum Vitae, cylindrical measuring 12 inches in diameter and 15 inches tall. I can barely lift it and each year I promise to get it on the lathe in the winter make something out of it. Alas, it's still sitting there as I can't make up my mind what to do with it. I really must knuckle down and get to work on it as you've inspired me.

    Beautiful result. Interestingly, I do off-center bowls in the reverse order. First, I turn the outside of the bowl normally--on a worm screw. I sand and finish. Then I take the blank off the lathe and draw out my interior on the top. I drill a second worm screw hole in that center and remount the blank. I cut a mortise along that axis and then reverse the blank and hollow out the bowl, then sand and finish the top and the interior. For me, this has the advantage that even once it's reversed off-center, it's at least round so it doesn't shake quite so much. Plus, I know what my fimal shape is so I can position the bowl more accurately. And I can sand the outside while it's centered, which reduces wear and tear on me.

      Hi Andrew, there’s a handful of things on our website, www.mothandmirror.com but better to come to a show. Where in the world are you?

  • @gianallele1
    @gianallele1 3 роки тому +2

    In due course, you should have your planer connected to your dust collection. Also where did you get that fancy pencil🤷‍♂️ are you sure you have that lathe bolted down 😧

    • @WoodWithD
      @WoodWithD  3 роки тому +1

      Hello mate, to answer your queries:
      Planer is now connected, since making that video.
      Fancy pencil came from a tropical zoo I visited in the midlands. I’m going to the area again soon, shall I get one for you?
      Lathe defo bolted down but only daily small bolts 😢

    Beautiful piece Dick! When you use the Forstener drill bit do you taper or just leave straight sides?

    • @WoodWithD
      @WoodWithD  Рік тому +1

      Welcome Halloweeninator (that’s a mouthful! 🤣)
      Fortunately for me I’ve got gripper jaws on that OLD chuck I used, so I don’t need to taper, just do it up tight.
      I’m shortly going to be doing another off centre bowl out of greenheart this time, and going to use a lot better, slightly safer, method of making this type of bowl. And specially for you I’ll use a tapered chuck grip 😁👍
      Probably be in a few weeks time, so if this is going to be a project for you, can you wait a few weeks, stick around and the new video will follow 😁👍👍👍

    Can I ask how you sanded this up I find it chokes the sandpaper up very quickly, I thought maybe there was another way or just patience and keep changing the paper

    • @WoodWithD
      @WoodWithD  Рік тому

      Unfortunately, if you wanna keep the lush oil finish, the clogging sandpaper and changing it is the way to go. I’ve heard some talk about using various chemicals to wipe away the surface oils in order to sand, but I’d rather do it old school. Good way to use up older sandpaper that I know you’ve got a pile off! 🤣🤣👍

    You used wood glue that is not a structural wood glue for a structural joint which is inherently dangerous. A structural grade of epoxy would have been a safer choice. A large faceplate allows screwing counterweights to the faceplate for a perfect balanceand safety.

      @WoodWithD  3 роки тому

      @gianallele1 3 роки тому +2

      Charlie, you are right. He didn’t even scuff up the surfaces before applying the glue. 🤷‍♂️ I hope Dick uses better safety procedures in the future but then again, it’s the danger that keeps me watching and it makes the popcorn taste better.
