Reponse from Express Employement Regarding Pets:
"Pets are allowed. However, if they are going into a hotel, they would be put on reimbursement. Camp grounds would be direct billed."
I got an apartment for the rest of my stay here at Digi-key, Express reimburses for your rent but not the pet fees, $25 in my case. Small cost as far as I'm concerned. Electric is also on you, again not that much. The job is pretty nice and I've been here since April 2022 and plan to ride it out till the end as I need to get my rig in order and save as much as possible before heading back on the road. Might even do beets in the fall. As far as stress at work, I'm nearly 64 and find it mildly taxing on my feet and legs as you are always on your feet. Our apartment is less than a mile away and since I don't have a car, I bike (yes, even in the bitter cold) but you could walk. The money is basically as stated and with the overtime we have been offered, I figure I will make around $65K this year less taxes and add what rent costs ($825 mo. ) we really are making some serious $$. The weather has/is being brutal, we have feet of snow and it's regularly -10 degrees and below. I'm used to it, spent 12 years year/round in Yellowstone but some of the folk are really surprised by it. We are coping with it and it's a great environment to work and you can make lots of friends both with the Express migrants and the locals. This has been a really great life-changer.
You pay $825 rent and they reimburse you?
@@ajf5823 Yes, they allow up to $1000/mo for rent. I usually get reimbursed in a day or two after submitting the reciept.
Pets are a real problem, only 2 hotels allow them and neither has availability in pet-friendly rooms. I just talked to several people at both hotels, and these were recommended by Express.
I really want to do this, but my service dog is family. 😢
Awesome and Thank u. I have an RV and van I travel in. ( 11 years full time) Rv getting work done and I'm interested but not untill I get my rv finished. Then he could be in his house in the parking lot wherever I'm working. I hope this is still a thing next year. Just bad timing for me this one. Fantastic opportunity, tho?
I’m not a nomad and I have a full time job, but I sure do love seeing these good opportunities available for nomads.
What do you do for work?
My wife and I did the Beet harvest this season for the first time. Stupid money, $4k for 11 days straight of non-stop work. I was "beet" to death when we were finally released. It was probably one of the more dangerous job I've done, if one is not paying attention. But it is also a job almost anyone can do. Its not difficult. It was fun to meet other fellow travelers. We had the good fortune of working with the "three sisters". I've never met a group of women with better leadership skills. Jessical, Elsa and Mary, thank you. It was a joy working with you.
Minnesota is too cold in the Winter for me. My goal is when it snows, to move South.
thanks for an honest assessment...the word "released" stands out here..
Was the 4k per person or couple?
@@7even171 per person.
@@catniplovescake released is what happens when the harvest is finished. The beets can't be piled if they are frozen and can't be piled if it's above 55 degrees because the beet is trying to heal itself. If it stays warm, the beet burns up all it's sugar and dies and starts to rot. The pile can literally melt away. Once the major farms have their beets harvested a skeleton crew is kept on to pile remaining beets that the smaller farms didn't harvest due to weather, or equipment problems. If we wanted, we could have stayed a few more days, but we were done at that point. People travel from all over the country to work the beet harvest. It's the most intense harvest in the world.
yeah. TRF, MN will be -30 to -50 jan to APR. I worked it last year. I am doing it again, windchill -25 tonight.. good oppt but cold winters for sure.
My start date is March 20, and have to be there on March 14th. I'm excited! I am RVing, and anticipate very cold weather still, and possibly no water or sewer for the first month or 2. I just completed 10 weeks at Amazon Camperforce in Kentucky. Bob is right about amazon, very tough on your feet and the work was very hard, but.... I lost 25 pounds without trying. I also signed up for the beet harvest. My goal is to buy property in November.
Just a couple of suggestions - if you're going to digi-key, and from a customer perspective they're a great company, make sure you have a very warm jacket and a good battery in your vehicle. There is nothing worse than being stuck with a dead battery at 20 below. Good luck to everyone that goes.
It gets to 20 below there??!! My car wouldn't make it 😂
I remember those temps, used to live in north central Iowa........we would snowmobile at ten below because it was the best balance of dryness and stability in the air...🙂
@@jbaby007 I'm in MInot, ND and it gets colder than 20 below. At the moment it is -17 and going down. People in TX say, "Don't mess with Texas." People in ND say, "Go ahead and mess with us, you will be frozen dead before you hit Bismarck."
20 below is warm here in TRF. Jan to April was 30 below to 50 below last winter.
Your channel is such a resource and "bank" of useful information for all campers, RVers, full timers, part timers etc. Love it.
Im heading to Digikey in January to start! I’m so excited thank you so much Bob for letting me know about this opportunity. I also did the Beet harvest this year ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for all you do and continuing to inspire so many!
How have you enjoyed the work so far? Although not much to do around town, lol. Feel free to reach out if you want to meet up sometime.
Awesome! Following on FB now. I’m starting nomad life again starting tomorrow! I sold my home and packed up my car :)
I planned on traveling and hiking creating content and then finding odd jobs here and there so this really helps!
So I've been doing the Digikey workamping for a while now (almost a year between beet harvests) and its a really good job. They provide hotels and will reimburse you if you get an apartment which is what I do. Plenty of overtime if you want it. I really can't say enough good things about this opportunity.
Do they provide ride from motel to job? I will be driving but worried the roads would be horrible going back and forth to work? Any input is greatly appreciated
@@kandicesmith1173 No they don't provide a ride but there are plenty of coworkers who would be happy to give you a ride. At one point I was picking up 4 other people every day.
@we are the champion thankyou so much
@@wearethechampions6216 Thankyou so much
I'm at digikey now and love it, got an apartment across the street, found this and the beet harvest which I did earlier this year, all thanks to Bob and his channel!
It is freezing cold, real feel negative 45 this week but definitely worth it!
Honestly, if it’s -20 or -40 can you really tell? Those temps scare the bejeezus out of me
@@stanbyme7874 Oh yah you can. It all about exposed skin freezing. Rule of thumb exposed skin can freeze in one minute at -60 degrees F.
My wife and I are near retirement and are perusing options for living in warm weather during winter and north in summer. I actually look forward to doing work like this. Man was not created to retire in the American ideal. We must remain active, engaged and productive. Live with purpose and live happier longer.
Yup, if you stop moving, you stop moving.
Keep up your good work Bob!
It’s wonderful to see you helping out your community?
Thank you both for coming together to share this information. Mr. Bob great questions in order to provide the most information. Ms. Parker thank you for your transparency and openness. Happy holidays!! Much love your way!! 🌟
I have a suggestion for a future video. My state charges a pretty hefty ad valorem tax on RVs for anual registration. Well, any newer vehicles really. Can you compile a list of the cheapest states to register your vehicles and RVs? Might as well do a cheapest states for income tax. I bet a bunch of people would like to know the cheapest state to be a resident of and be a nomad. Thanks!
TRy South Dakota
Good information and good pay. I will say that going to Thief River Falls in January is something I would not consider for myself. My van is insulated and I have a Webasto heater and I wouldn't do it. Especially this year with the snow that's already fallen and the projected temperatures. I've lived in Minnesota for 45 years, but when I built my van, part of the reason was to escape Minnesota winters-and I lived 3 and 1/2 hours south of Thief. Just my .02.
Thanks Bob. You've got such a great mind, ability to predict things that MIGHT come up, or might happen, or questions others might ask. Admirable!! ♥
Thank you Mr Wells you do good work! 👍
I have been a Digi-Key customer for decades and love them. Super dependable.
This is awesome not just for nomads, but also there would be a lot of folk watching these van life vids who are not doing so well and may need some employment,,,,,,win win and will get to meet van lifers and on the job!
Thanks for the info! I'm here at Digi-Key from your first video and loving it! 👍
What exactly do you do (physically).
@@deedeeotero4475 Yea , I was wondering too lol
@@deedeeotero4475 From the pictures it looks like they're filling orders, stuffing and taping the boxes, then toss them on a conveyor belt.
Pickers take parts off the shelf, wrap them up, label them, and send them off on the conveyor belt to be packaged and shipped to the customer. There are opportunities to do different jobs if one doesn't work for you.
You get your own. I moved into an apartment which is also reimbursed
Thanks to a previous video Bob did talking about this job. I am now starting my third week with Digi-Key.
Nice! You probably started with Adam my Beet harvest leader! Hope your enjoying your time!
@@spiritualnomadlife Yes, I did. Adam is a great guy. Although, we work different shift times. Enjoying my time up here, although not use to these winter tempetures, haha.
I am in Colorado and need work immediately and have no home. Please don't feel I am trying to move forward and better my life. I have only a backpack no kids, no pets, just a great smile and attitude.
Bob, I love the questions you ask. It shows you care about the people. That speaks volumes!
Great way to save up that emergency fund!
OK here it goes this is probably gonna be kinda long. I was living in my van in central Texas for about a year working at a job I did not care for. I was always interested in being a nomad but wasn’t able to afford it, I saw your video on nomad job that did about Digital-Key and so I thought what the heck I wonder if they’re hiring permanent. So I went online and applied they offered me a job packed up my stuff in the van move from Central Texas to thief River Falls Minnesota and started full time. I found a cheap apartment in town and I am banking a ton of money getting ready to hit the road. I want to say that Digi-Key is a fantastic place to work I work in PDCE which is picking/moving larger items using equipment. The shifts are great, the supervisors are great the facility is fantastic I’m in the new building. If you wanna work during the days they have shifts if you wanna split days they have shifts and if you wanna work at night they have shifts too. They also for the most part allow overtime as you wanna work it sometimes there’s restrictions but there’s usually always some overtime or weekend time available if you want it. If you need to change come to Digi-Key in thief River Falls, you won’t regret it sure is cold for a couple of months and there’s a little bit of snow but it is absolutely beautiful and the summers are just unbelievable. Even if you’re looking for a full-time job and maybe a change in your life apply come up here and see how you like it, cause I know you will
Sounds like a good plan to me, I’m glad it worked out for you, it will be my first choice when I get out on the road next year, thanks for your experience.
This is great and exciting news thank you for bringing this to our attention 😊
Is this a fast moving upbeat job ?
What a fabulous opportunity and to cover living expenses is quite generous. I wish Canada had something like this available. Although we certainly wouldn't be paid the equivalent of $20 US=$27.40 CAD an hour.
What a wonderful opportunity. Than you for sharing these resources.
Suggestion: ask her to give a bit more details up front re housing at hotel, especially for those who are light sleepers or who use cpap machine, as example. Do workers have to share room with other workers?
I'd like to know this as well.
No, you get your own room and could even get an apartment but you would pay the rent and they reimburse you.
No you don't have to share rooms.
My e-mail from them states that if you are solo without an RV, It is double occupancy for a nominal fee (I'm waiting to hear back on how much it is) you are responsible for finding your own bunk mate that must also be working the beet harvest. This was not my understanding either from this interview, but I applied last night and received that information this morning.
No room sharing. Ask for the hotel across the street (highway) from Digi-Key and Arctic. You can walk the short distance in good weather. Too cold to walk now.
I run Shipping and Receiving for a Digi-Key customer. Digi-Key's work is very professional.
Do you know right off the cuff if there is insurance offered? Or is this purely a position that is fulfilled by an employment service?
Omigoodness this is amazing! Bob you are a Saint for giving us all of these resources! Thank you so much!❤
Are there any desk jobs available for nomads? Some older people like me can not stand for eight hours or do such physical work.
The arthritis in my knees is too advanced for me to stand or walk for 8 hrs a day. I get the gel injections in my knees every 6 months but standing all day would wear my joints out.
9:18 They do drug screens. I’m from OR where those aren’t done. I’ve learned to always look for that info. Thank you for clarifying the move process. Watched earlier video, Summer 2022, was concerned how this works. Great job. Great pay. It’s going to be -17° next week🥶 We nomads follow the weather.
Arizonan here - thin blood, I would freeze!🥶
Is it a urine test?
@@MrBasmith13 she doesn’t clarify. I’m calling to see March 2023 start date. I will ask "for a friend"
Nobody mentioned pets. Will these hotels allow them? I have a cat. Is that do-able?
Right...I was waiting to hear about pets as well. I have a dog.
No they won’t allow pets
Really doubt it
@@skinsfan661how do you know this for a fact? Did you call?
@@skinsfan661 Hard to meet an RVer who doesn't have at least one pet. That's going to eliminate a lot of candidates.
I also wondered where we're supposed to store our RV until the campgrounds open. Also, after August, does the job go away until January rolls around again? The money earned will have to be spent paying for life on the road for 5 months rather than going toward debt. If it's a year round opportunity, great. Switching from picking and packing to beet harvesting isn't really an option for me, so not sure this will work.
Hoka brand shoes help with your feet. They're expensive but not at $20
I have 2 small well trained (potty and crate trained) Esa dogs. Does the hotel they use allow dogs with an addition deposit? Ive stayed in multiple hotels with no problems or damage and can provide references if needed.
I’d like to know that as well Marie, I also will be traveling with my dog .
The apartment I got cost me $825 up front for a deposit and then there is a non-refundable pet fee ($250 I think) and then $25 extra a month for rent which Express does not refund. I think there is a two pet limit at most places.
One of the hotels requires you to pay weekly if you have a pet but, you get reimbursed quickly if no damage.
I think there's only one hotel in town that allows dogs so you may need to do the apartment route. Call Express and ask.
My wife and I currently live in a 25ft travel trailer, and live at a RV park in Southern Utah, if we could get something like Digi-Key it might help up to do a bit more traveling.
I would do this if I didn't hate the cold so much. I'll be staying south!
Wow! Sounds like a great opportunity to save up some money.
Thanks Bob
Do you get your own private room or do you share a room with someone at DIGI-KEY?
You get your own private hotel room ❤️
Or house, or apartment, I got an apartment right across the street they reimburse me & everyone. It's a great easy job, great people.
@@MarlenaWiesemanwhen you say reimburse does that mean you pay first and get it back later, or do they take it out of your check and give It back later?
I ask Google the current weather at Thief River Falls Sunday 9pm: -8F degrees with wind-chill -21F. Wow!
Overnight shift only? Ok if you can handle it but my health is worth more than that.
I like it I'm pure breed nomad please give me info. Thanks
Now there's a monetary scientific weight measurement! 😱😁🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇸

I am there right now. It will be -22 here Tuesday. The RV park shut off the water and sewer about a month ago.
Is their a shuttle to and from motel to work?
So just out of curiosity, how do you get water and dump your tanks in this weather? Wow it really is cold this week. Much respect for you all!
Yikes
If your in a Rv park than now what
How do you get water and dump tanks?
Yes
How do people keep their vehicles going in those temps?! I’m in WA/OR & even muttering the word snow shuts down the west! And all of sudden no one can make it to work because "I live on a hill"🤣 Really-how do you keep batteries going? Can’t just plug-in an engine warmer or a battery trickler in park lot.
I'm employed with express personnel in Topeka Kansas I do plan on traveling to places that has Express personal
Is there certain skills needed to apply.
No skills but there is a kind of cognitive test.
Well, if it turns out that I won’t be continuing with graduate school next semester it looks like I have a plan. Thank you so much for sharing this information!!!
Is Thief River Falls, MN a sundown town?
I have a question" its 1550 miles to the Job Warehouse" from where i am" i have a Felony History over ten years Ago, if I took the chance and drove My Motorhome 32 ft" 460"1994 Thor Four Winds XL" to Minn" from lake Stevens WA" would i be denied work because of my felony history?
That would come up in the hiring process so you would know before you drove up. Apply, be honest and see what happens.
Biggest question I have is transportation from hotel/camp ground to and from digikey??
Ask for the hotel across the street from Digi-Key/Arctic Cat.
Hotel placement depends on availability like any hotel. I got put in one about 2 1/2 miles away but there are employees who you can get a ride from also there's a taxi service but it's 10 dollars a ride.
What about parking for RVs until the camp ground opens?
The hotels allow you to park your rig in their parking lot.
It is open, there just isn't any water. Several people store their RVs here.
@@freebird9229 do the hotels allow dogs ?
For many peoplr with carpal tunnel, packaging work can exacerbate their symptoms. Would have been nice if she could have shown a clip of a Digi-Key worker gathering the product and packaging it.
Most of the items are placed in plastic bags or directly in plastic totes for transport on the continuous belt system that runs through the buildings. Some parts are small and some are larger but, not beyond the scope of most people to handle. Think of electronic parts that fit within a computer. They have millions of these small parts. Some parts are so small you need to count them on a super-sensitive scale. They also cut and splice reels of very tiny parts. You will be using a hand-held scanner for the entire shift.
Learning the computer commands can be an issue for some people as there are so many commands and methods to utilize in moving and ordering parts in the computer system. Some people take to it quickly, while others take longer.
Lifting, moving or using your hands is no problem for many people. I have not encountered any strenuous activity in picking and packing. Most people are willing to help you if you ask.
Yes, the concrete floors are hard but, the work stations have rubber (or rubbery) mats. You will be provided in-training inserts for your shoes. My advice is to buy well-cushioned shoes or orthopedic shoes. Cheap shoes will not work here.
I hope this helps.

I did some quick calculations which brought me to the question; is housing taxed? This is a great opportunity and you can control your income so you won’t affect Social Security benefits
Express doesn't tax it but I think legally you still have to count it in the end.
We are required to work 40 hours a week, so you could be here for approx. 6 months before capping out for SS purposes.
That’s a good question @dianashelton. Are they going to give you a 1099 at the end of the year for all of the housing they provide or housing expenses reimbursed? That would be a big hit tax-wise, especially if you weren’t expecting it!

They should put a proper standing mat down. Even Retail does that.

My rv isn't finished in the renovation. I'd commit to January if it were completed. I suppose I could go and stay in the hotel until I had enough to finish the renovation. Minnesota is really cold, isn't it during that time?

Do they provide rides to and from motel? I will be driving but wondering about how bad roads get ,any problems getting from motel to work?
A local bus service offers $2 or $3 rides for limited hours during the day.
There is usually not a problem getting to work. If there is they understand. They don't get a ton of snow here. Its mostly the cold that sucks.

This is the same role from a year ago of moving inventory from the old building to the new building. As a reasonable accommodation anyone with a wheeled walker that has a seat can apply to the job, perform their work duties, while still having their seat to use for picking and packing or to take small breaks as needed.
