Baptism does not effect regeneration. Regeneration is itself a washing. (Titus 3:5b). Reference also, 1 Cor. 12:13. with 1 Cor. 2:14. Jesus' baptizing "with Holy Spirit and fire" is set in contrast to John the Forerunner's (Baptist) Mikvah (washing) with water. John himself testifies to this. John was an Old Covenant prophet, preaching to Jews, still under the Administration of the Law. Baptismal regeneration, including 'infant' baptism as an 'heir' of such a novelty, has opened the door to presumption on the part of MANY as to their standing before God. But for God's grace and Sovereignty, these would be cradled with such darkness. (" But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" . Jesus' words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee, provide the needed clarity: John 3:8 "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (ESV). The Spirit is not acted upon (as some would have us believe) by a 'priest' thinking, in effect, that they can harness the wind/Spirit of John 3:8 because their dogma of infant, regenerative baptism gives them such a power!! No wonder some refuse to use the word "sacrament" and opt instead for "ordinance'. This I have learned the hard way, over many years. Such is the labyrinth known as "christendom".
