Dr. Pitre, I'm from Brazil and I can't wait to read your new book. I am reading Saint John of the Cross and I am very impressed by the high number of biblical quotations. Since I started reading it, my desire to learn more about the spiritual meaning of the scriptures and how to enjoy them in spiritual life has grown a lot. Your new book is a gift from God to me.

If you read him, you will see how he expounds the deep, spiritual meaning of the holy scripture. You will never interpret it as he does. Don't talk about you don't know and don't wanna know...

I believe it was St. Thomas Aquinas that said basically the spiritual life is sacrificing our will to God's will. And the 3 pillars of the spiritual life are:
    1. Prayer
    2. Rooting out the defects.
    3. Reading the Bible and other good Catholic books like yours.
I am really glad i stumbled across this video. I will be ordering your book and seeing how you break down some of it. Sometimes Jordan Aumann, Tanquerey and Reginald Gerigou-Lagrange are kinda of heavy to read.
    Thank you Mr. Pitre!

It is plausible that the concept of the "Dark Night of the Soul" is the following "You're entrusted with a task on your own to go there and contend to bring the locals into line." as a concept; if so, it is not something to be dreaded nor feared at all; but something to be prepared for, trained for.

Dr. Petri, don't be sorry about introducing the Jewish roots of Christianity, not in the least. The vast majority of the early Christians, including Christ Himself, were Jews. It therefore follows very closely that Christianity would have Jewish elements to it in it.

By and large, Sir; it is blatantly foolish to go to the theological department of Notre Dame University and to accept really anything there without filtering it. There is known to be a lot of junk, a *lot* of junk, being distributed to the students in that department of that particular school.
In fact, you'd probably be far safer attending Moscow University in 1940 AD, with its completely evil curriculum, as opposed to a "catholic" school that doesn't embrace Catholic teachings... at least in the case of the former you know what you're getting and where it is coming from!
So it vastly depends on when you attended that particular university as a student and what they were teaching, the content of the material.

Great subject. Speaking about what Jesus taught about prayer. Did he ever teach to pray to Mary? This is what I find in his own Word.
In the Bible, in both the Old and the New Testament, all Believers always pray DIRECTLY to God the Father. And in the New Testament it's always directly to God the Father, "in the name of Jesus". In fact when the disciples asked Jesus himself how to pray he said:
"... your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come..."
    Matthew 6:8‭-‬9
    And...
"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."
    Matthew 6:6 v
Prayer is a rational, relational conversation with the One who loves us.
And in God's Word Jesus himself intercedes for us, not his human mother. This is exactly what it says:
"Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them."
    Hebrews 7:25
Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
    Romans 8:34
    And the Holy Spirit:
    In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;
    Roman 8:26
    That's good enough for me.
So, in conclusion, in the Bible the idea is NOT to go to the Son's human mother (or to anyone else), who then goes to the Son, who then goes to the Father with your request. No, your Heavenly Father's wish and desire is that you go DIRECTLY to Him with all your prayers and petitions. I'm not kidding. Check it out for yourself. So why go in little circles when the Father wants, and even commands, that we come directly to Him.
"In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father."
    John 16:26‭-‬27
It's as though I was a simple little employee in a huge giant corporation. And the President/Owner of the corporation adopted me and loved me and told (ordered) me that any time I had a problem or a request, I was to go directly to him, and he would handle it. Perfect.
As for me I think I'll just stick with God's Word and go on "drawing near to God (the Father) through Him (Jesus)", being that I want to be "saved forever". I just figure God must know what he's talking about. After all, he is omniscient.
"...for the Father Himself loves you" .
Anything else is pure human reasoning. No thanks. Christ and his Word are sufficient.
    I'll end with this:
"Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them."
    Hebrews 7:25
We are to "draw near to God through him (Christ Jesus)". The unbiblical Roman Catholic practice of praying to Mary and the "Saints" has exactly the opposite effect. It distances us from God instead of drawing us near to him in Christ Jesus.
“You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition."
    Mark 7:9
"The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."
    John 1:5
This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.
    1 John 5:14‭-‬15
Anyhow, that's what I do. I pray directly to my Heavenly Father out of simple obedience. After all He's done for me it's the least I can do. Obey, and not invent my own religion.
Seems like you all have made a whole other religion out of Jesus' very human mother.

Prayer is also a humble request. We ask Mary to pray for us. James 5:16, 1 Timothy 2:1, Colossians 1:9, 1 Thessalonians 5:25, 2 Thessalonians 3:1, Colossians 4:3, make it clear that we are to pray for each other.
Why can't we humbly request that Mary pray for us? Is she not part of the Body of Christ?

Rolando why do you even bother to come to a Catholic post and say such things? Perhaps you should focus on yourself and your own spiritual path. To spend so much time and energy to come here and lash out is saddening to me. Your pride and ego must be so huge and your humility and peace so small, again I say it’s sad to my heart. The Lord told us to be meek and mild in our ways. You come here to flex your pride and wag your tung to say look at me how perfect I am that I have to spend my time pointing my finger of discontent at you Catholics. Go in peace brother and focus on your spiritual health and that of your family. The energy spent on those closes to you will alone save more souls then spouting pride and wagging your finger at Catholics on UA-cam. Peace be with you.

I invite you to pause and think for a moment; the Church has been around for 2000 some years, with some of the most intelligent people to ever walk the planet, pouring over Sacred Scripture day and night. Do you honestly think that the Church isn't aware of what Scripture says, especially when She herself compiled the sacred texts that we now call "The Bible"?

  • @dlw3425

O great. Another Catholic pushing a book. People need to read those classics for themselves, not your opinion of them. It doesn't say much for your intellectual curiosity that you hadn't already read these books before you reached doctoral studies. At the very least, you should have been familiar with and owned a copy of The Imitation of Christ. This is basic Catholic reading. Encourage folks to read the classics and scripture. It's gotten so almost every video by Catholics is focused on selling a new book.

When a Catholic publishes a book he introduces to the classics . You can then read the classics. First you should know that there is a classic called "Dark Night of the Soul". A Catholic who publishes the book introduces the classic to the people.
You need to appreciate the good works. Dr. Brant Pitre is an amazing scholar. A gift for the Church.
