  • Today we're finally diving into Ace Combat music for the first time ever! This is Daredevil from Ace Combat 7 Skies Unknown. I knew Ace Combat was a fighter jet game, but this music is making me think it is MUCH deeper than that.

I remember reading a bit about the composing process behind this track on twitter: The producer refused to finalize game without a track that "gives goosebumps and makes player cry" he asked Keiki Kobayashi to compose an amazing song that would make the game a success; and thus Daredevil was born.

The game was also way over budget and way behind in terms of release schedule.
And the game itself wasn't expected to get made in the first place, since the company didn't feel like AC7 was worth investing time and money into making.

Agree to disagree, this game is about being the ultimate hero. It's about going big and epic. Without that kind of musics, players can't feel it. This music is the secret sauce, the ingredients that connect everything, gameplay, graphics, level design story and dialogue and elevate it to new heights.

    • @nicolasillarnizzi
      @nicolasillarnizzi Місяць тому +14

It does look way over the top and incredibly good for a "arcade jet video games" but video games are about fantasy and emotions, big emotions for AC. It's about changing the world winning a war, being the most important asset in a terrible war and even, saving millions of lives, saving entire cities from destruction and deaths. And the only way to feel that is with music. That kind of music.

Hope you all are excited for NGAD - I know I am. Still hoping we get declassified info of competitor prototypes in time for AC8 (or at least its DLC) even though I know we have had little more to go on than the ROIs put out over the last few years. All we know is that at least one proof of concept scale model has flown successfully, but nothing else is known - not even the manufacturer.
Judging by how none of the US armed forces can seem to agree on mission parameters going forward, it's seeming more and more likely that the US will have multiple 6th (or at least 5.5) generation aircraft on the horizon (budget be damed I guess😅).
Any bets on competitors or potential contract winners? My money is all in on Lockheed's Skunk Works as usual!

And do not underestimate Ace Combat games.
Its certainly a Fighter Sim but there are always huge undertones and imagery.
AC5 for instance has Norse Influences and things play out there is a higher power at work to guide history.
    As for this song:
Daredevil is a play how the MC was demonized for a crime he did not commit. He became a devil to his own nation and this is his rise to redemption. Even the main rival of the game is Mihaly, romanian I think for Michael. Michael is said to face Satan.
Likewise, the core of the story is also over a tower that reaches deep into the sky. Babel. And the main consequence is how humanity lose the ability to communicate because of the war over it.
It took a daredevil to face what are absolutely oppressing odds to bring back peace.
This song plays when you face a gigantic flying Arsenal protecting the Tower. Armed with dozens and dozens of drones.
Its a war against an enemy where pilots from opposing nations unite to destroy the threat of drones who are being used by another nation to plague the skies.
The game is a love letter to pilots and the love to fly in the skies as Mihaly believed there no nations or borders in the skies. He believes people can understand another in the freedom of the endless skies.
The final battle proved it as they all stand united against the drone threat.

One thing I would like to point out, Daredevil plays during the penultimate mission of the game.
The big melodic hit at 11:11 works even better from a narrative standpoint, as it reprises the leitmotif found in other parts of the game notably in the first mission's theme "Charge Assault".

Davi, this review was an absolute delight. It's the best review of "Daredevil" I've seen with a wonderful blend of raw, emotional reaction and technical analysis. I love how the song constantly takes you by surprise.
If you're to listen to another Ace Combat track, it should be "Hush" from Ace Combat 7 because it's literally the sequel song to "Daredevil." You mentioned during this video that despite the isolating feel of the vocals early in the track that there's a sense of hope-"Hush" very much takes the idea of hopefulness and bends and stresses it to the limit. I think you'll love it.
Ace Combat games, specifically since AC4, have a veneer of being a simple, arcade fighter plane game. Underneath that, they're laden with religious and mythological symbolism. The narrative structure, the characters, the themes, the story itself, and the way the music is both composed and integrated into the games are all intentional and create a gaming experience you can't find anywhere else. And to top it off, they have some of the best music composed today that masterfully combines modern sound design with classical orchestration.
Can't wait for you to dive further into the series.

  • @SpectralWaltz
    @SpectralWaltz Місяць тому +2

Something I really like about the track is how the instrumentation feeds the sense of conflict. The song starts with a droning mechanical tone that presses against the listener under the tense strings, constantly present under everything. Then comes in the vocal track, calm, peaceful, almost meditative, not all is lost, the droning (hah) won't win. Only then the mechanical tones come back, stronger, louder, drowning out the vocals until they too rise, shouting defiantly, the strings and percussion growing more and more chaotic all the while until-!
And then the drop hits, the vocals *soar* and the droning oppressive sound is drowned out as the human element of the song rises triumphant.
    It's downright masterfully done.

You said in the past that Valstrax’s theme sounds like flying. But to me, AC7’s main motif is what really sounds like flying.
The way it goes up then down and then up again repeatedly, slowly, and elegantly just feels perfect. I’ve always said it feels like ‘the freedom of flight given musical form’. Which is extremely fitting for AC7’s story, since human pilots vs drones is a major theme.

I've scrolled a little bit and don't see these points, so I'll plop them here:
+Ace Combat is _absolutely_ like an anime writer's work plopped into an arcade flight combat game. The hero is always an unstoppable force against a relatable but unforgivable evil.
+Ace Combat music from the 4th game onward is the king of buildups. Daredevil takes it to the maximum, but these composers _adore_ the effect.
+Daredevil is the final boss music of the game, and said boss moves through phases which are accompanied by emotional changes in the supporting cast and stepped forward by the player's actions, thus each section of the song is indeed designed to loop until the player completes the current task and there will be a musical cue moving it into the next portion; the most notable of these being that almost "electronic water" sound that plays when the boss's invincible super-shield fails followed by the solo soprano going full-tilt as the all-out allied assault begins.

I love seeing people experience Ace Combat. Daredevil is one of the best, Kobayashi was a master of leitmotif in AC7 and you hear the main tones of this track throughout the game. "Charge Assault", "Battle for Farbanti", and a few others have the main rhythm to them and hearing these tracks atop the story beats for the first time really sells you on being such a heroic character

The next epic song to listen to from Ace Combat 7 would be The Hero Of Comberth Harbor both the original composition and the game version. One of my favorite songs from Ace Combat 7 would be the ADFX-10's theme as it sounds so similar to Top Gun's Flat Spin or Hop 31 but better

Two recommendations; there is a rendition of the Ace Combat 6 song “Liberation of Gracemeria” from the franchise’s 25th anniversary symphony. I’d recommend it over the OG cause it goes a lot hard.
The other is from the AC inspired indie, Project Wingman: Showdown just slaps absolutely hard.

It's not understating things to say that the music is one of the main characters in Ace Combat, the games wouldn't be the same without it.
Also, you're right that a lot of Ace Combat tracks are made to loop, but they typically play in their entirety before looping. In the case of Daredevil, the scene is actually built around the music.

The final build up the OST happened in game when your team finally switched off the shield of the big aircraft boss, The Arsenal Bird. Thus the final build up represents the hope the protagonist team had after being overwhelmed by the Arsenal Bird for so long few missions before. When the shield is off, then you can directly lock the missiles onto the big aircraft, then sink it into the ocean

As that happened, i was around 3km in the sky, and started falling on the damned thing because the first time around, i shot it down with 2% durability left on me, so i desperately tried to lose the fucking drones off my tail, and right as i descend on that metal monster i hear everyone screaming at Trigger to shoot that thing down, pushing him on.
      NGL, i teared up.

The Ace Combat games are crazy, over the top, and way overdramatic and ridiculous… And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
They’re not realistic, but feel right out of the stories you would make up playing with toy planes on your bedroom floor.
Another thing you could say is that they’re Gundam stories with jets instead of mechs.
A fellow musical UA-camr, Marcomeatball recently played through the AC PS2 trilogy and AC7. Let’s just say the ‘funny plane games’ brought him to tears.

15:42 Nah you got it right the first time, this is a gameplay track, during a boss fight.
The part of the mission this track plays in is very heavily scripted and the track matches it very closely, the big drop that the entire song has been building to plays right at the turning point of the mission.
It is the game quite literally screaming at you that this is the moment youve been waiting for, so you better make it count!

The first time I heard ACE COMBAT music was in a very serious game called "I Wanna Be the Boshy". It was three-phased oatmeal final boss and the author used a track - Monolith Agnus Dei . This is still my favorite, although it is probably less interesting in terms of composition and musical techniques than the one presented in the video
