    I’d for sure save the first houseplant I ever got. I’ve had that Hoya since 2005, got it as a cutting from a friend of my mother. She gave it to me as a ”moving away from home”-present at the age of 15. So I’m quite proud that I’ve managed to keep it alive. That’s the one I’d save! 😅 it just has survived all kinds of plant-murders throughout the years in my home… also the motherplant is from the early 1920’s. 😅

    I took 3 months off from work, and life in general, earlier this year for anxiety and........bought 300 plants. Now I'm sitting here watching you so I can figure out how to keep them all alive. Win win, I say:) We're all in the same bucket these days; hang in there and keep doing what makes you happy.

    I have anxiety issues and the past few months its been unpleasant. Mine was triggered by something which is very small and sorted but it floored me. So I feel for you anx everyone that has anxiety its such an odd thing to deal with. I am a shut down person which is so unhelpful maybe one day I will learn to open up and talk to people

    For me, some plants are easy with the lifting technique. If it's not an obvious thing (weight or how the leaves look) I use a moisture meter. I did see tonight on a Planty UA-camr video that moisture meters can be inaccurate because they somehow work with the electrical conductivity of the soil (aka amount of moisture), but she also said that certain minerals can alter the actual reading. But, hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?! 🤣 Love the long videos!

  • @sandiesorchids9387
    @sandiesorchids9387 2 роки тому +1

    I can't wait to see your new place and how you place your plants. I really need to know how to care for Syngonium my Syngonium leaves have brown dry edges and the new growth doesn't open up without having dry and brown edges. I water it with rain water so I don't know why it has brown dry edges. I use a moisture meter and I also pick up the pot to see hoo dry it is.

  • @littleheaven70
    @littleheaven70 2 роки тому

    I do love my moisture meter because I have some very large pots and short fingers. Also, I have long nails and I hate getting dirt stuck under them, lol. But I never rely the moisture meter reading alone, because it can be inaccurate. Really chunky substrate can cause it to read too dry, for example. I use a combo of clear pots (to eyeball the soil), weighing the pot by hand (if it’s small enough), feeling the leaves, and the moisture meter. Or for plants that are a pain to reach, I’ll cheat and leave a Sustee in them 😂

    Another great chat, Claire. I have daughters about your age, but you feel like a close friend to me. I probably shouldn't spend so much time on UA-cam, lol! Yes, now I definitely use a moisture meter, but didn't until this past year. I have two; one that has a short sensor and a long one for all my big dudes. Best decision, really, I don't know why it took me so long. Takes the guess work out of it when your finger is not long enough! I always say I've never met a plant I didn't like, but plenty have not liked me, and all my string plants have been a pain in the a**! Only in the last few weeks have my string of turtles and pearls started to improve and, astonishingly, decided to put out new growth...once the summer ended, go figure.

    I use the finger technique I do have a moisture meter…. I find it faster to do the finger method 2 inch in if it moist it probably more moist at the bottom it much easier to find out if your plants are in a nursery pot just pop that out of the decor pot and check

    I have a lot of that plastic knocking around, hadn’t thought of using it for that purpose… that’s a good part of my weekend taken up now 😆 I have 24 poles to do 🤦‍♂️ hopefully will make a good difference, I had thought of using drainpipe previously as it would also negate the need for a garden stake when I extend it to 1.8m but as I have it already I’m going to give it a shot.. I pick up lots of little tips from you 😊

    I use moisture meters for all my big pots. Helps a ton. Many of my plants feel dry an inch or two on, but meter confirms it’s wet 6-7” in. Would def overwater plants in pots bigger than 12” without one.

  • @carolgraham7691

    I use a moisture meter, especially on ceramic and large containers which have a lot depth... don't depend on that, hoever for many plants..use weight of container, how plant looks...depends on plant, my own intuition..after taking care of plants for many years..like yourself..you develop a rhythm with plant care.. i find problems may happen when there are drastic temperature changes..which happens in my environment 🙃...
    So snails are like 🐇 🐰..
    When I had to evacuate because of fire in our area, I grabbed the Staghorn fern because it was especially big and thriving..but I would have missed my others a great deal, too.

    I do use a moisture meter, good for the succulents and Sansevierias to ensure they're completely dry. But tropical plants I find the moisture meter useful to a degree but sometimes like your question received it's a bit all over the place with it's measurement.
    And don't feel the need to put out a video if you're not feeling it and need some me time, we all just enjoy when you do but don't have to be on a schedule. ☺️

    Really enjoyed this chilled chatty video. Being new to this I got myself a moisture meter quite early yin my journey as I just wasn’t sure what I was doing (which is still the case). Also my plants aren’t very big so poking my finger into the smaller pots wasn’t really an option, but I can now usually judge those by their weight. As for which plant would I save in a fire. I don’t have too many to choose from and although I do love my trailing plants, I think they would be easier (and cheaper) to replace, so I would have to save my Anthurium Clarinervium. It is probably my biggest plant and the leaves are stunning and although I have not had it long, I would definitely miss it. (I live in a small house and as I’m writing this, it is only about 18 inches from my leg!). Thanks for all your planty & chatty videos, they are great💚

But with all my other plants I just lift the pot to see how light it is. I have recently had root rot of a few of my plants tho so I was so confused because I’ve never had that happen before but I’m thinking it may be the shift in weather and the heating be on so maybe I thought it needed watering before it did xx

I have atopic dermatitis(eczema), so having thick hand creams in my car, bedroom, living room and purse make me feel secure. It can be detrimental if I allow my skin to dry without moisturizing after all the hand washing I perform daily.

    I have a suspicion that moisture meters might be less accurate with really chunky soil, because it needs good contact with the sensor. I’m surprised that you didn’t put the old gloriosum section back into soil since the roots are used to it? The front section I could see using moss- it looks like it needs more root growth
