- World’s BIGGEST / MOST POWERFUL GUN ever built! (Heavy Gustav Railway Gun.)
This is the Schwerer Gustav, or, in English, the Heavy or Great Gustav. And very, very heavy and great it was -- it weighed 1,350 tonnes and could fire a 7 tonne shell to a range of 30 miles.
Developed by Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, the Heavy Gustav 800 mm caliber monster canon was explicitly designed as a siege artillery weapon to penetrate and decimate the super thick reinforced concrete fortifications of the French defensive facility known as the Maginot Line.
Built by the leading German arms manufacturer Krupp AG, and in fact named after the company CEO Gustav Krupp, the Heavy Gustav Railway gun stretched 155 feet in length, including its 106 foot long barrel. It required a team of thousands to dig embankments and lay railway tracks; and around 3 days and 250 people were needed to assemble the gigantic weapon.
The infamous, Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, was personally involved in the gun’s commissioning. In fact it was not until Hitler visited the Krupp company and enquired about the viability of such a theoretical weapon that things were finally set in motion and the colossal cannon was born.
Quite ironically though the Heavy Gustav Gun itself, the most powerful gun in the world ever, was never actually used in the fighting between the French and Germans, as the Nazis essentially invaded France via Belgium and therefore almost entirely circumvented the immensely expensive line of heavy French fortifications - indeed the brilliantly constructed yet completely under-utilized Maginot line has since become a synonym for how the best laid plans can so often go badly awry.
Then again, owing to the damage that Gustav would soon wreak upon an impressive system of Soviet fortifications, perhaps the allegedly “impregnable” Maginot line was best left untested.
And so it was in June of 1942 and at the Eastern Front siege of Sevastopol that Gustav was called in, and first used in combat.
In spite of a massive conventional German aerial and artillery bombardment, the tenacious Soviets, safely hidden in their massive underground bunkers, had so far managed to hold the strategically critical port city of Sevastopol.
It was therefore hoped by the German High Command that Gustav’s imminent arrival would help break the stalemate and end the siege in their favour.
Transported to the Crimea on a heavily customized 1.5 kilometre long 25 car train, Gustav was painstakingly positioned, assembled, and secured by some 3800 personnel. And when the world’s largest ever gun was finally unleashed, it proved to be utterly devastating.
Over a short 4 week period commencing on the 5th of June 1942, Gustav operated with clinical and overwhelming force -- with a single 7-tonne concrete piercing shell reportedly penetrating more than 100-feet of earth before obliterating a crucial Soviet underground ammunitions store.
By early July, Gustav had brought the siege to a decisive conclusion - with the Soviets surrendering and with the city of Sevastopol left in ruins.
And so while Gustav’s effectiveness as the ultimate siege breaking artillery piece was undeniable; it actually barely took any further part in the war owing to the extraordinary inherent challenges in transporting it, as well as due the limited opportunities available to a Nazi regime that would soon come under siege itself.
Uncertainty and conjecture surround Gustav's fate, but it seems this phenomenal weapon, the likes of which the world had never before seen, was probably destroyed by the retreating German army so as to avoid it falling into the hands of the advancing Soviet Union.

The devastation caused by a single shell is mind-boggling . Especially with its depth penetration capabilities no bunker would be invulnerable .One of the reasons no doubt why the Germans constructed their bunkers with walls as thick as 30-40 feet , no opposition Gustaf should cause the same damage .
My grandpa´s dad worked on this gun, when it was fired he lost his eadrum almost instantly.
Fun fact, after "only" 48 shells, the barrel was completely worn out and had to be replaced, that´s why they stopped using it.

Here's a bit of trivia, based on principles of physics. If a firearm is discharged in an environment without an atmosphere, maximum range is acheived if the angle of elevation is 45 degrees. On Earth's surface, due to air resistance, the angle is around 30 degrees, with most firearms. But with a large artillery piece, a higher angle produces the greatest range. That's because the projectile travels into the upper atmosphere, where the air resistance is much less. You'll note that in most of these photos of the Gustav firing, the angle is very steep.

Larger rounds are also less affected by air resistance. The mass increases in 3 dimensions while air resistance increases in 2 dimensions, unless I'm being stupid.
+InqWiper After pondering this for a few minutes I think you're part right... It's true that drag force is a function of frontal area, a drag coefficient, and a square of velocity. It's also true that mass increases as a cube of dimension. However if any dimension increases that also increases surface area, the drag function is incremented by this and would increase linearly with size of the round. The seeming exception to this rule is length of cartridge which would have more friction drag but not have an effect on frontal area. Interesting to think about...

Let's say we have a cube of 1x1x1 with the mass of 1 and also the drag of 1. If we increase the size to 2x2x2 we will have the drag of 4 but the mass of 8. 3x3x3 will have the drag of 9 and the mass of 27.
10x10x10 will have the drag of 100 and the mass of 1000. Now drag will only affect the cube by 1/10 compared to the first cube. No?
+InqWiper You're correct and I think you illuminate my point quite well, the critical note in this example is the additional length of the cartridge. If you have a pre-existing shape and expand it in a way that increases frontal area your benefit is nil, a 10x10x1 sheet would have a mass and drag of 100 in your example whereas a 5x5x10 would have a mass of 250 and a drag of 25, not a realistic thing to expect considering the shapes are changing and so would the Cd but for simplicity's sake we'll pretend it doesn't vary much.
So in the end the key statement and one that's borne out by reality and all modern high-performance cartridges is that Longer rounds are less affected by air resistance per mass. Consider the current spitzer bullet shape, effective frontal area is usually almost nil and the aspect ratio of diameter to bullet length is very low usually. One last thing to consider is that small arms cartridges often operate at supersonic velocities, I have no insight here as I haven't taken fluid dynamics. This artillery round may well operate at subsonic speeds.
An interesting discussion about the critical engineering aspects of projectiles I'd say...

You have absolute no understanding how war is fought. The French lost due to the blitzkrieg and the collapse of their frontline. Had the French managed to hold the initial blitz, this would have been a replay of WW1. When you don't have a large land buffer like Russia, modern warfare is basically all about a brief but brutal series of battles. Once you lose this initial series of battles and your frontline collapse, you have two choices: surrender or face total annihilation.

Peter43John The biggest naval guns were Japanese, on the Yamato. They were 36 inch. And this was a mobile gun, built before the war. Mid war, they built a stationary number, called the V-3. That (those) were never actually used in action, they were bombed out by the RAF every time they got almost finished, but they were built aimed at London. Apart from those, both British & German forces had several big naval guns set up onshore, to fire across the English Channel, which were used. Wikipedia has quite a bit on this.

I had no idea they actually used it in combat. I was always under the impression that it was built but only tested and not used in combat.. It’s wild to learn that they actually used it and annihilated soviet bunkers with it.

It could only fire about 60 or 70 shells before the barrel was useless and needed it to be replaced. For the full cost, including development, of this weapon the Germans could have built around 500 Tiger II tanks which would have been far more effective in the battle and more easily transported.

I can't believe this heavy Siege gun was built over 80 years ago . I still stare in awe of it when I see it. I just can't understand how the Germans could build something like that that long ago. The engineering involved to build something like this in the 19 thirties early forties is just beyond imagining. The Germans are a special breed of people.
I know this is an old post. But I had to agree with you on that one. I couldn't of said it any better.
Once they get something in their heads they wont let go until the project is finished . They are often accused of over engineering and that they have a tendency to 'engineer things to death' . I think there is some mild forms of jealousy involved in those remarks .
Don’t forget they tried to make another one that was basically going to be a Metal Gear. They had planned to make a version that was all terrain but they ran out of time with the end of the war fast approaching and still no solution to the weight issues or the fact that you need to change out the barrel every 30 or so shots

You covered this huge gun, I looked on your channel but you didn't cover the Yamato battleship (at least I didn't see it). Which was the sea equivalent of this gun during WW2. It was bigger than even the aircraft carriers of that time, it was a huge ship.

Yes it did what it was meant for. It broke the 2nd siege of Sevastopol and destroyed the Maxim Gorky fort and its famous battle ship double gun turrets which the soviets placed all around the forts at the harbors mouth . It also obliterated several steel reinforced concrete underground ammunition depots .

Some in the German army said that the great rail gun was a great aid...to the Allied cause. True, it helped in siege situations, but it had an enormous cost. Separate rail lines, a huge contingent of dedicated men, it was the costliest single weapon in military history.

Well, I spent 20 years in the military in artillery and I can tell you I would not have wanted to be the one (of many) who had to clean the bore after each round was fired. That would be a lot of hard scrubbing!!

The nazis actually DIDN'T invade through Belgium in the battle of France. They instead were able to penetrate through the ardennes forrest where the Maginot line was weakest even though it was thought to be impassible by tanks. The Belgium method was in actuality employed by the Kaiser during WW1 under the "Schlieffen plan"

I think you're being a bit pedantic. The Germans totally avoided the main/actual Maginot line on the French border and instead passed through the relatively pathetic/non existent section of the line through southeastern BELGIUM and northern LUXEMBOURG.

Great video and nicely narrated. I have read that the labor to build the double tracks it ran on were prisoners. I also read that the magazine it destroyed in Sevastapol was under 100' of water. At 20mm is when a gun starts to become a cannon, and that's way bigger than a 50 cal. The 88mm cannon was feared for shredding tanks in WW2. This thing was 800mm. And that's just the width. Where other bullets make holes in things, this thing will remove the thing, and the things next to the thing. And behind the thing. And everything in front of the thing. It's the ctrl alt delete of cannons.

CPTANT: when this artillery was constructed, there was no 10 ton nuclear bomb to drop from a plane. had germany had such a bomb in at the start of the war, and others not, i reckon a/ ol' Gustav wouldnt have been used and b/ the war would have concluded very quickly on all fronts.
