I will say, I was a Mormon who grew up in the south. Most people were evangelicals. I felt so excluded all the time and like they were constantly trying to convert me. No matter where you live, whatever dominant religion is present sets the tone.
When I was teaching a 4th discussion to an investigator, he stopped us at the paradise/prison part and asked why he should accept the gospel now when he can be baptized in the next life and enjoy this life. We stammered out something about being able to enjoy God's blessing for us in this life and access to the Holy Ghost, but there really isn't a good answer for it. My companion and I talked about it for a while and I think back to it often. Updating the question to be more applicable to you and me: In Mormon theology, is it better to leave the church (stop attending), or to do something where you get ex-communicated because then you'd be required to be baptized again and be forgiven your sins?
