What paint are you using? I use a similar technique but without the cotton buds. I apply a liberal fill, let it "go off" for a couple of minutes then wipe the excess off with a rag lightly soaked in spirit. For all but the shallowest stampings, where the fill can be pulled back out, I find this gives excellent results.
2 coats before doing stampings and screws and score lines (grooves) after 3rd coat. Want to make sure you fill score lines right up with paint fill, that way you get a good even finish. @@paulkerin6378 Thank you...I only do hickory and I struggle with the stampings because of their age and relative shallowness
