Hello and welcome to this weird crevasse of the internet where we get really excited about music (particularly Taylor Swift) and break down our favourite albums and songs. Our names are Bonny and Emily, and our aim with these videos is to share our love for music and also share context and understanding around the songs, by highlighting breaking down the lyrics, melodies and production. I didnt see any comments about this. But Alchemy also ties into Midas touch (King midas turning everything he touches into gold) - "your midas touch on the chevy door"... in champagne problems.

What I love about fortnight opening the album is that midnights have 13 main tracks. Fortnight is 14 days. It's the transition song.

I can't believed I vibed for a whole hour with you guys. This is definitely her most anticipating album like these track titles are so mysterious 😭😭
I just want to add that on April 19, 2019, the movie Someone Great came out, which was the one that inspired Death By a Thousand Cuts and was in turn inspired by Clean. Also, Taylor’s comments on what the movie was about kind of have some similarities to comments in People’s article about her and Joe’s breakup (them growing apart and stuff). So maybe she saw this movie as very much like her reality.
As an aside, the line “I love you; it’s ruining my life” makes me think of the lyrics in The Alcott where the male pov sings “I’ll ruin it all over/I’ll ruin it for you” and the female pov responds with “Why don’t you rain on my parade/read my sentence out loud,” which I took to mean like a prison sentence.

I don't think there was any surprising reason that caused this breakup, it may have been disagreements of personality, ambitions, purposes... maybe she wanted to break up for a long time but she had a certain kind of emotional dependence and as you said it is very difficult for you to leave a person you love and didn't do anything very wrong

@@sumeya1923a deeper reason, yes. But I think what the op meant is that there might not have been one specific situation that caused the breakup. Like for example cheating. Even in you're losing me, it's more like he gradually lost interest or wasn't involved enough or they grew apart
I think by the time she left him she didn't love him anymore , she didn't hate him , but she was heartbroken she spent 6 years in a relationship that drained her emotionally and isolated for so long. In the Time magazine she talks about being locked for 6 years and she wasn't going to do that anymore . I think we are going to have some " Harry treatment" and some Jake treatment. We may not have a "Dear John" but I think we may have an " All too well".

Another thing about Clara Bow is that she retired after she got married and sort of disappeared from the public eye 🫠🫠 Obviously we know Taylor and Joe discussed marriage (paper rings, lover, you’re losing me) and that Taylor stayed out of the spotlight while they were together. I think because it’s an album closer it could be more of a cautionary tale, like she was so close to becoming Clara Bow but she didn’t 🫶
another thing about clara bow is that her relationships were publicly scrutinized like crazy, she eventually had a breakdown, too.

I'm super excited for this album ❤ but i have to say I'm kinda over the whole, "every ex is now a villain" route, that the fandom takes. Obviously during a relationship, your going to highlight the ups and downs but mostly the ups cause your so in love (rep, lover, ect) and then when it ends or as its ending you want to vent your frustrations at the bad and heartbreaking times (mignights, ttpd), it doesn't suddenly make that person a villain or terrible guy, it just shows how complex love and humans really are. and thats how i see this album, as a deep dive into how complicated,sad, difficult and also good, it is to let go of something you loved so much and then find the new you. Kinda like the song happiness (which is soooo good)
Thank you! I hate that "oh he made her suffer so much and she was misserable and he was hiding her" kinda thing that's been going on. I mean, they were together for six years and Taylor has been hurt in the past, I don't think she would put herself in that situation again for SIX YEARS if she knew it was that bad.
And it's honestly really sad because I feel like she obviously wrote this album from a place of sadness and maybe anger that her relationship is over which is understandable but maybe it's not the complete truth of what happened... It's just how she felt about it just like idk when she said that Joe J. broke up with her over the phone but they ended up being friends years later. And I feel like some people are gonna use that to attack Joe because he "hurt her" and she will have no control over the situation
well, he wasted *some* years, she was open about wanting to get married. and he never spoke about her publicly, was never supportive. methinks Joe is NOT a Swiftie, never was.

Taylor knew from the beginning that Joe was not a Swiftie. Taylor even said in her interview with Lowe that Joe likes very sad songs and turned Taylor on to songs and their authors that he likes that also Taylor ended up liking. Hence, her people pleasing addiction. Taylor thought Joe was wiser than her and better than her. You can't blame that on Joe. And Taylor said what she loved about Joe when she first saw him was that he was gorgeous to her and she did not think as was her habit if the guys she likes are good guys as long as they are gorgeous to her. Many interviews of hers she has said that. But Joe was a very private person who had no use for paparazzi and Taylor did tell him from the beginning that her career was over and her reputation was nowhere and she does not want paparazzi after her and she even moved to the UK to get away. Then years later when Taylor did not want to hide and wanted back in NYC and having a career, it is not Joe's fault that he did not change and go along. Also, due to Covid they both lived together in her home in NYC and Taylor got tired of just very sad songs Joe played and loved. It happens. They both saw how different they were but where Joe saw Taylor was not for him after all these years, Taylor tried to keep it going and hoping Joe would change for her but that doesn't happen. The worst for Taylor was his rejection of Taylor by not wanting to marry her and keep things copestetic. Plus, there were times like Valentines Day that Joe spent in London but did not have Taylor with him or stay in the states with Taylor. After several years together, Joe saw Taylor was not the right partner for him and it took Taylor more time to see Joe was not for her as she realized she can't change Joe or anyone. After they broke up, Taylor was able to call her girlfriends and go out with them and whatever she told them, they all unfollowed him. Which has some people thinking he cheated on her or maybe he just did not want to go out with Taylor in public and be seen with her because of all the photos and paparazzi. Taylor said she doesn't mind the paparazzi taking pictures as long as they don't get in her face asking questions of her. In any case, Taylor said she needed to write this album more than she ever had to need to write before. That is the interesting thing. It might be her way of showing herself that Joe was not better or smarter than her that she realized after so many years and that she is not insecure like she was and realizes Joe was not the greatest person she thought at one time. Which is not Joe's fault but Taylor's for putting him on a pedestal for so long. Another reason she purposely used the title of her album after Joe's chat group. And used the word poetry in it as she felt for so long that Joe felt he was more poetic than her and she thought so too. And since then, she knows she allowed herself to believe Joe was everything. Until she couldn't.
I get that Joe might not have been what she thought he was, that happens... Sadly. However we don't really know what truly happened and somehow I can't help but feel like they're playing around that. If Joe ends up being a terrible person it's understandable but in my opinion not justifiable. Like for example the faces she makes when she says "I miss you" in Bejeweled or WANEGBT
or Jack throwing "clues" about him being such a bad person or her friends unfollowing him the very same day. I refuse to believe that the day they went out was the day they found out about the breakup. Taylor is seen when she wants to be seen and she knows how to have a private life, why risking going out to tell her friends about a secret on her personal life? Don't they have a group chat or didn't she text them about it? To me, that was more like "look, I'm fine and I have people on my side" type of thing which is understandable but to me seems a little weird after she first told us to not attack John Mayer and after that she and her friends kept dropping hints about how bad Joe was knowing very well that her fans will take it out of context... Idk, I love her songs so much and she used to be such a comfort person but I'm kinda disappointed with how all this is being dealt with :(

I think the shortened form is definitely TTPD (like the logo) or Tortured Poets (because that’s what Taylor called it at the first Tokyo show). It’s been several days and I still don’t think it’s sunk in that we’re getting TS11 in just a couple of months 😳

Love all of your breakdowns and theories about this album. Your conversation about Alchemy and how Taylor is the one that makes things golden in her relationship with Joe reminded me of an iconic scene from Grey’s Anatomy (random, I know). When Christina is leaving Grey’s and she has final dance off with Meredith her parting words in reference to Meredith’s relationship with Derrick (McDreamy) are: “You are a gifted surgeon with an extraordinary mind. Don’t let what he wants eclipse what you need. He’s very dreamy, but he’s not the sun. You are.” And Alchemy is giving me those vibes, like the self realization that she was always the sun/golden.
Alchemy is also giving Champagne problems "Your Midas touch on the Chevy door" Because Midas is who touch anything it turns into gold
The vibe I've been getting from Poets is a bit of a bluesy, noir vibe. I'm feeling something like Cardigan, and remember the sort of jazzy vocals from the beginning of Christmas Tree Farm? Imagine that holy Christ 🤯It makes me think of classic detective shows, and black and white 1950s movies. It would be really cool to get some different instrumentation in there like brass or woodwind.
that's what i was thinking! Especially with her song Clara Bowe. She was literally a black-and-white silent film actress who went on to talking roles in colour. I don't know a lot but apparently she might have been forced to retire and a lot of controversies, possible backstabbers and was basically the original IT girl or something

It was leaked on TikTok but the weird thing was that it was leaked over a week before the album was initially announced. Somebody posted on the 26th of January that she was releasing a new album called the Tortured Poets Department. They also got the track list right, except their track list had one extra song that hasn’t been announced yet.
“Guilty as sin” is also a lyric from her song Carolina for the 2022 movie that touches on a crime/murder, and I think that’s an interesting thing to name the title track given that she has created some, if not most, of the TTPD tracks way back 2022. That’s sooooo offensive!
Edit: The movie is “Where the Crawdads Sing”.

I was thinking there was 2 because if like everyone says the pattern of her albums is the the two Tv versions one year and a new album and another 2 Taylor’s versions but if we go back before fearless tv and red we had 2 albums drop of folklore and evermore in 2020 I’m thinking because she held up 2 fingers and if you look closely at that clock on the teacup that made us all think it was rep tv we were going to get the 2 clock hands actually made me think they looked like an actual hand holding up a ✌🏼 so are we getting another new album this year in say October or November

Okay, I want to say something about “But Daddy, I love him” within the premise of it being a hint to The Little Mermaid and that movie being about a girl giving up her voice for a man (Bare with me, this is going to be very long but I promise it comes to a conclusion about Taylor and this song.): I’ve never really agreed with the statement that Ariel gave up her voice for a man, because she wanted to live on land before she ever saw the prince. Part Of That World is before she sees him and she has always been obsessed with human artifacts. Meeting the prince was more like the last straw that made her decide to go after that dream she had. Now, if we relate this to Taylor and Joe, I kind of feel the same about that. I think that we all agree that, towards the end of the relationship, Taylor wanted to have a more public life and he didn’t, but I think we would go too far as to say that the ONLY reason she ever decided to live a more private life was because of Joe. When they met Taylor was in a really dark place and it makes sense that she would want to get away from everything and live more private. I believe that even in 1989 era, she said something about feeling like she lived in a snow globe because her life was beautiful, but even if she wanted to, there was no escape. So, I don’t know how Taylor sees The Little Mermaid, if she thinks Ariel gave up he voice for the prince or if she wanted a different life before him, if the title is even a reference to the movie or if it’s about Joe at all, but I think we should keep in mind she could spin it a few different ways.
