Being emo in Australia, especially Queensland, is a whole other level. Nothing worse than sweating at the beach on a 40 degree day but still wearing skinny jeans, a band tee and a spikey black leather jacket but refusing to remove it because teenage angst
You ought to lean into it hard and do an emo cover of your hummus song. I think that's the kind of niche audio experience your audience is yearning for.
Tokidoki Traveller always!!! Also it’s so refreshing to see you in a completely different look minus the pasted fringe.. like you could totally rock that as a normal look tbh HAHAHAHA
I think this is my favourite video of the year. It made me remember that my first Facebook picture back in like 2007 was Roxas from Kingdom Hearts crying in the rain with his hood up.
I love that you had your own emo hang out spot, in Birmingham UK we had 'pidgen park' witch was just a small park in the center of town but it felt like the center of the universe for most of my teen years! 😂
seriously Emma thank you for this, this made me feel so scene--er I mean, seen! I never had an emo phase growing up but in the last couple years I have become obsessed with the music (MCR, Mayday Parade, Jimmy Eat World, so on) and so while my fashion aesthetic is not emo (although emo fashion is tons of fun to look at), my soul definitely is lol. I totally feel you with the "it's not really a phase" thing because to me, emo isn't just a fashion aesthetic or a musical style--it's a part of who I am: a very emotional person, and those emotions don't have to be sad or negative. All emotions are part of "emo" to me, and I love music and art that's designed to express that--always have, always will. Also YES ROCKING THE 100 GECS MERCH YOUR MUSIC TASTE IS CLEARLY CULTURED bless your soul ✨
That, "I made you a cookie but I eated it it." Brought back SO MANY memories from my highschool, omg. I was never personally emo myself, but I hung out with na bunch of them, and my highschool girlfriend was one of those that wore oversized military jackets
Hell yea I aprove Emma. That style looks so good on you! Shit I was emo back in the day but mine time was like 6-10th grade. Listened to Linkin Park, Korn, Distrubed, August Burns Red, The Offspring, Evanescense, Attack Attack, Tokio Hotel, Fall out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Paramore, Jimmy Eats World, AFI, All American Rejects, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Rage Against the Machine, Muse, Gorillaz, Raised by Wolves, The Killers, and others. I remember by Myspace song was Coming Undone by Korn and my friend helped me make my myspace gritty and dark. Still remember my first mosh pit, definitely wish I could go back in time. I would tag pics, but I was that "taking pics and posting them is mainstream kind guy". Only would share new songs or crazy dark art on my myspace lol. I mean I think still rocking some emo style here and there would look great. Have you checked out the yami kawaii subculture over there? Barely found out and about it, and they seem like some cool people. They combined being kawaii with morbid/grotesque type elements.
Deffo not good being an emo in a warmer climate! You know what they say: "A sweaty emo is a sad emo. A non-sweaty emo is a...sad emo." Loved this video so much Emma! You looked great! Took me back to my myspace dayzzzz...the days of only being able to see out of one eye due to a humungous side-fringe, frowning in photos and wearing my studded belt and black grubby Converse every day.
I loved this video. I've been thinking about my own punk/emo days recently and I really appreciated your courage in dressing up in the way you used to.
EMMA the editing here is everything hahaha! I also went through a similar phase when I was younger (though probably more punk than emo) and even though it's a little cringe to look back on, I really applaud myself for not giving a crap about what other people thought about it ;-)
AHAHAHA THIS IS AMAZING!!! And I was a Gold Coast Emo but travelled to Brisbane to specifically sit out the front of Hungry Jacks! (and go to the Purikua shop in I think it was the Myer Centre?)
Omg Emma this is amazing!!! and yes I’m a Brisbane local and can confirm about the hungry jacks hangouts back in the day 😂 pretty sure Queen Street is just full of E-girls and boys now though. But dude, I don’t know what’s in the air because I’ve literally felt my inner emo/scene calling to me these last few weeks, so I’ve been itching to recreate an old look 😅 Thank you for inspiring me! *rawr* XD
I really liked you on Tokyo Creative, but apparently you are an unrivaled comedic genius on your own channel! You brighten my day and I love you for it ♡
Wow, that was a walk down memory lane for me. I was heavily involved with the local goth scene in Chicago in the 90s. Have you read the Hex Files? It’s a book about that era and it covers much of the history I remember.
EMMA!! 🤣🤣🤣 Something triggered in the nope section of a terrible makeup hahahaha but then again I remember that stage in my life 🤣 minus the eyeshadow. As an adult now I've figured out my outfits still are black most of the time. Lol
So I don't actually LOL at videos much, but this just got me good... 🤣I've been binge watching your videos while working for days now, but this is the one that finally made me decide to subscribe! 🖤
🎃 Happy Fall Emma! You’re hilarious, I loved the no loitering sign!! One of my favorite artists is Panic! Kids used to think I was just a quiet Punk kid even though I didn’t really have one kind of style, lol 🤣✌️
I remember my first "dark/heavy" song I heard on the radio too! It was Pain by Three Days Grace. I still love them! I listen to a lot of the bands you talked about too.
also i've been hella looking forward to your videos because you always upload in the mornings while i'm in class so i FINALLY have something to look forward to
I think we might be the same age and we also have a similar experience. I saw a music video for I'm Not Okay by My Chemical Romance and I was all about it. In 2006, I started telling everyone that I was going to be "a goth" in middle school (I'm American lol). I really loved anime and drawing too. I started dressing in Tripp pants and shaved half my head and dyed it purple. Everyone interpreted my style as emo and that's slowly where it went. I listened to a lot of Coheed and Cambria and still do. I hated pink, but what's weird is, I love it now. Later in high school, my style started getting more hipstery and then I got into Korean street fashion because of all the K-dramas I watched. From that, my love for anime and Japanese fashion kinda resurfaced in Lolita and cute frilly clothes. Now I wear all kinds of pastels and have maybe like 3 articles of black clothing.
It’s true, that emo phase never really goes away, it’s always going to be part of you... I have similar pictures like that where I reminisce about the past listening to some really hardcore screamo, being with my emo boyfriend. Those where the days...
I was a senior in high school 2006/2007, so this is giving me some good nostalgia. I am getting TOOK! I actually went and saw Hawthorne Heights and Emery in concert right before the pandemic!
Also I definitely remember going to Bris back in 2006 or something for an MCR concert and seeing all the emos outside HJs and being so jealous LMAO Townsville was NOT offering the goods back then
Fun fact: When I first moved to the Brisbane area when I was around 19, the fun place for emos to hang out was the near the fountain outside Town Hall. That was, until it got turned off and the area got refurbished due to the bus way being constructed beneath it. Ahhh, so long ago. I guess consequently the emo crowd moved from there to sitting outside Hungry Jacks.
You brought me back to that era. Thank you. I was not an emo for fashion sense but I listened to a lot of them. My friends also made fun of me because I'm really the reserved type and my taste in music is just the total opposite of me
That's some really dank stuff. Very much enjoyed learning your history and even more the Hilarious meme content. Please continue..... we will watch your career with great interest
omg that brought me back. Queen St Mall Hungry Jacks! my experience with them was when i was 17 years old and just graduated highschool and went to see AFI instead of going to schoolies. (excellent concert, decemberunderground tour) i would have been RIGHT there hanging out with those emo kids all the time but i lived in Bundaberg back then.
I totally feel you on still liking the fashion! I was a huge metalhead/gothy dude and I don't dress that way anymore, but I'm still super attracted to that alternative style.
I deleted all my pictures from my emo phase so I’m glad you did yourself justice and saved them lololol. I would love to look back at all the pictures I took during that time!
Girl that looks good you need to wear that on occasion. Don't be afraid to you know different things. It looks really really really good and you look good in Black. I think it's awesome and I think every other video you should rock that lip ring and just confuse people. Good job I enjoyed this one
I wasn't what you would call emo, but in the UK we had a term "mosher"... I was probably closest to that, quite a bit of crossover with emo though. Seeing your photos and especially your transformation, took me right back to my teens, thank you!🤘 You still have it by the way, you totally rocked that look! The music that you listen to during those foundational years sticks with you for the rest of your life.. I too still listen to the same music that I did back then, I even find it difficult at times to get into new music. Lyrics aren't as easy to remember, but I still remember most of "my music" word for word, you know? Fun fact! My friend, brother in law and father to my nephew, was the guitarist in a band that supported Bring Me The Horizon, for a couple of gigs back when they were just performing small academy gigs around the UK.. He isn't in that band anymore, and I don't even know if they are still around.. But yea, cool little bit of history for him.
I haven’t laughed this hard in awhile 😂 thanks for being brave and digging up the past. I will never tell people i know that i had a 2 week emo phase 😂😂😂😂😂
I was a “br00tal kid” in the early 2000’s I listen to a lot of Deathcore bands from listening to MCR, greenday & disturbed. I miss MySpace. My style now i still wear all black, ASOS , horror t shirts & gym attire lol
Omg. I love you so much Emma. 😂 you are so right. We never truly outgrow the “phase”. I also got into “emo” fashion and trends in middle school. I was really into good charlotte. They were my first inspiration for tattoos. Black clothes. Dark eye make up. Then ny ink was always on tv and I discovered kat von d. I went from good charlotte to Metallica to bullet for my valentine. And while my music hasn’t changes AT ALL, my clothes have. But once I discovered my skinny jeans, black v-necks, hoodies, and vans or converse, this is kind of where I have been for the last 10+ years. 😂😂😂 I guess some would call me “hipster” but like. There’s so many different styles within the term “hipster”.
Wow, that was fun. You rock that look! Took me back to my Goth days when I was in college. And 2020 is definitely the year to reminisce about Emo and Goth attitude.
Same, was emo-ish minus the hardware and dye since I had no money. Dollar store mascara and eyeliner smudged easy so it worked. Bed head hair was my favourite half decade of hair. It shifted to a bit more punk. Then colourful vintage 50's. Now it's sporty casual with a splash of goth/emo. But the piercing/jewelry is only weekends due to social/healthcare field .
I really enjoyed your story because I had a very similar journey as you. I remember the struggle trying to keep all my blacks from fading. Staind was my favorite emo band. Followed by AFI and My Chemical Romance. That type of music was a big form of release for me. If you meet me today, you'd have no idea I went through that phase. I'm very chill now, open minded, and listen to a broad range of music including J-Pop. Who would've knew! My current wardrobe is more normal, but on rare occasion I like to "dress up" (for lack of a better term) and rock out to my favorite old emo bands. Just like you said, it wasn't really a phase because a part of it has always stayed.
Loved the look back to the past and the reprise of the inner emo. It suits you. Great outro with the music. Though you could do a darker, blood-red lip without going to all black. It wouldn't look out of place in Tokyo.
wow emo emma was classic emo! loved the transformation and the pics 🖤 my sister was emo for a little bit around that same time, she had the hair and all her photos were the classic emo angles! she still listens to the same bands to this day too. I was never part of any sort of tribe tho. I was a li'l too cynic and never felt like I liked or knew enough about any stuff to be part of any sort of tribe~ *and* did not get along with the smart kids (they were so arrogant and competitive!) so I was more into being as invisible as possible and getting through the day which was nice because I had superficial good relationships, but also not so nice bc never felt truly a part of anything and didn't fit anywhere.
Wow, this couldn’t have had better timing!! Haha, I don’t know why, but lately, my old emo playlists have been coming back into circulation. Fun video bringing me back to 2007-2009 🤣
I miss my emo/goth days. Even though they were some of the worst years of my life mental health wise, I feel the goth subculture really helped me get through it. In fact, I got bullied less when I became a goth and stopped trying to fit in. You're correct in that we never really grow out of it. I still listen to the music I did back then, I still wear mostly black and I still have the coloured hair. I just also developed a taste for very cutesy things too.
"Me: I'm not even emo anymore.
My Spotify history:"
This made me laugh more than it should have, haha.
Being emo in Australia, especially Queensland, is a whole other level. Nothing worse than sweating at the beach on a 40 degree day but still wearing skinny jeans, a band tee and a spikey black leather jacket but refusing to remove it because teenage angst
Sounds like the only thing getting you through was the aesthetic
Melting goths at the big day out on the Goldie 🤣
Omg mood 😂 I lived in Townsville! Multiple layers, boots, jeans, and then going to concerts and sweating??? I’m surprised I didn’t faint!
Rachel S I lived in Townsville too! Definitely a big achievement not fainting there
@@dannibretzke4213 nice hahaha! Townsville rep!

I'm actually so hyped to listen to that now XD
Absolutely
2020 Is deff the year to bring out the 2007 angst.
I’VE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS VIDEO aaaaaaa emo Emma is iconic

I laughed so hard when that popped up, so weirdly nostalgic.
THE WOMAN. THE MYTH. THE LEGEND.
ABBY 😂😂
My god, the DISRESPECT YOUR SURROUNDINGS
OK but can we talk about how gorgeous Emma looked with pink hair?!
if there's any time to become emo again, it's definitely 2020 😂
Because nobody will see it xD

I was a hungry jacks emo!!! Nothing like hitting the CBD with friends, checking out Off Ya Tree and taking pics with my digital camera 🤘
“Guys I’m emo!”
Lol it’s like “hey have you heard the good word about black eyeliner!”
I love that emos sitting outside Hungry Jack's is something that Brisbane and Melbourne both share
Melbourne city emo's live at the Flinders Street steps
This camp experience sounds truly fantastic. Especially nowadays it can't hurt to reconnect with the primal spirit and the bond with nature.
I think this is my favourite video of the year. It made me remember that my first Facebook picture back in like 2007 was Roxas from Kingdom Hearts crying in the rain with his hood up.

This is a great look! 2020 emo rocks my socks
6:45 You get sent to the middle of no where -- Outback Australia.... Yeah I guess the last Outback Australia I was at WAS in the middle of no where...
I was never emo, but I really wish I commit to the look, so I’m just living vicariously through you
We would've been best friends in our "hella emo" days. It still looks great on you. I wish emo never died. 😂
Undead, undead, undead...
Isn't the point to be different?
This was an awesome video. Seriously. Thanks for sharing Emma. You rock. Take care.
Oh my god Emma yes, you look so good! And you're right, emo is not just a phase. You don't outgrow it.
