I am watching pre-coverage of Elon Musk's Starship test flight 3. It might be coming down into the Indian Ocean Thursday. I wonder if Be Free will be anywhere near there.
Brilliant episode capturing real world sailing. Thanks for sharing the sharks, dolphins, doldrums, and exhilaration of fast sailing and dealing with sudden sail shredding wind change. Preparing for official boarding with extreme fatigue is a laborious task when sleep is desperately needed. Thank you for sharing. I hope you get some rest. 🛌💤
Hei Thomas: Jeg ønsker deg en fortsatt god verdensreise! 🌍🌎🌏 Du har en utrolig mental styrke og utholdenhet! Beundrer deg! Pass godt på deg sjøl - alltid! ( som du jo gjør). Safe sailing! KEEP ENJOYING YOUR ADVENTURE! 🇧🇻❤🇧🇻
Thomas , A great episode of real world sailing , and I was wondering was the asymmetric spinnaker a 3/4 ounce Sail? So sad to lose a sail such as that , it looked so very effective for many of those conditions you were encountering . Robert North Star
Ahoi Captain Thomas, RIP ripped sail - that really hurt watching. What an amazing adventure. Glad you and Be Free made it safe to Indonesia. Congratulations!
Hi Thomas, most people have never been sailing by themselves in the peace you get when you’re out in the ocean is incredible, and you can never pay for that piece anyway you keep doing what you’re doing. Keep up the good work Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺
Thomas, one of the things I love about your videos is your optimism! You have had numerous, HUGE challenges and you just keep a smile on and forge ahead! Kudos to you my friend! I am currently on the East coast of the US on my Jeanneau 54DS and making final preps to get her ready to head out in December. I hope one day to meet up with you and buy you a beer!
Thank you so much for being here and for your kind words. The 54DS is a great yacht and well proven safe ocean going model. I have a friend that has 12 Atlantic crossings with a DS54. All the best and thank you for being here! Who knows we might share some good stories over a cold beer somewhere one day ⛵️ Fair winds
I am in a marina in ireland where it storms every so often and jibs getting destroyed furling out during the night. Got mine secured with a extra line roled around the jib and tight up.
Yes your absolutely right, somehow I see now it came out wrong in the editing. I did correct myself in the clip I have😅 What I meant to say was the most populated. It’s 279 million people spread out on this islands. Almost unbelievable.
Thank you so much for being here 🙏🏻 We are all different and to some being so isolated seems very difficult and impossible. I truly enjoy long distance sailing, the tranquility and peace. All the best
Good one 😆 The no fishing zone is for commercial fishing. I was in international waters though, and far out of the national park. Thank you for watching and for being here🙏🏻
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here🙏🏻 I know there is a sail loft in Bali, but that’s still quite a distance away from here. More than thousand nautical miles. All the best
In general Selden makes great stuff, good rigging and lots of cool things. So yeah it would been amazing to get some help from them. The Selden furler I have on my CODE is apparently replaced with new an better solution. The one I have is famous for unfurling itself, so not ideal for a solo sailor. It’s not to be negative about Selden, I’m only sharing to create awareness around this for sailors so they can be careful. Anyway shitt happens and it’s part of the sailing game. All the best
Yes it’s always a good idea to do some research. Luckily most of Indonesia is pretty safe. But even here there is regions to watch out for and to be a bit careful. All the best
Congratulations🎉🥳 and commiserations about the mainsail 😢 I hope to be emulating what you're doing as soon as possible, albeit on a somewhat smaller budget! I yearn for freedom and adventure.
Seems like such a shame that you pass through all these islands since leaving the Tuamotus and you hardly stay in any place long enough to see the sights. Are you just interested in daily for the most part?
Unfortunately there is seasonal weather that’s the number one factor. Then it’s visa and some places just to much hassle. Normally I stay a while and do really take my time to explore. However the South Pacific challenge started in French Polynesia with changed rules for long stay visa. My intentions was to spend cyclone season in Polynesia. However with this ruled out, I suddenly had a very tight schedule to cross the rest of the pacific to get out of the cyclone zone. Still I have seen and experienced a lot, also I really enjoy sailing and long passages. I believe I’m one of few that would enjoy a nonstop sail around the world as well. Maybe later. But now I’m outside the cyclone zone, and are trying to get a long stay visa to explore the beauty and wonders of Indonesia 🇮🇩
Try using a strong handline of VB cord with 19mm rubber shock absorber built in. No need to slow down, the fish just planes up to surface and you pull it in.
Early in the vid when you had a nap Be Free cutting thru the waves put me right to sleep... had to rewind the vid... Laff... glad to see you made it to the islands and Fair Winds...
Thanks, Thomas for your video diary, I'm located on the East coast of NSW Australia, I enjoyed the sound of your boat plowing through the top of QZ in warm waters and weather as it has been around 33 to 36c here I had the warm weather experience while watching your passage. On another matter, I was talked into having a roller flying staysail, it used to be hanked on. I had the same experience of the sail unfurling. Now after seeing your videos, I will reinstall the staysail stay. and only use the furler for the split reachers. SV Skoiern IV
15:20 huge loss, very sorry. It almost seemed a little tight in this photo but I'm not a sailor. I'll not forget the 50 knot storm in the Indian Ocean at night on Delos. Had to be hand steered , very scary storm !
Yeah it’s definitely a sad moment. I should have tucked it away earlier as I obviously knew what was coming. Sailing in 50 knots of wind and above is no fun. The worst storm I have experienced with my boat was above 70, and it’s more about damage control than sailing when it gets this rough. Both me and my boat came out of that experience with no damages at all. BE FREE has proven to be a very safe and good boat for me⛵️🇳🇴
The Sound of Sailing! Beutiful Thomas! :-) Found your channel "5 episodes" ago - I need to catch up! Lovely. Bry dig inte om andra fåniga kommetarer! Vi är många som gillar dig och dina filmer! Tack för fina filmer.
Just stay as you are....being alone and being lonely are 2 different things...you do what you want, where you want, when you want....that’s called freedom...and on a sailboat it’s ultimate freedom
Solo sailing is something I truly love, however sometimes it would be nice to share the most epic moments with someone. But the freedom of choice and also no one to take care of is as you say very well the ultimate freedom. All the best
Yeah totally understand you, however for me this is absolutely the perfect place to be. It’s definitely not for everyone. It’s a bit weird to look at the maps now. I feel like almost home, as it’s not that long distance to the Suez, and from there to the Med. In fact I can easily reach Greece early summer if I want. All the best 🍻
Congrats on the long passage. Hope you find that your sail is repairable. Maybe labor costs in that part of the world will be a bit less than the EU or S. Pacific.
Thank you so much for watching and your empathy🙏🏻 Have not even looked at the sail yet. It’s a bit emotional as I really love this sail. Anyway now I’m enjoying Indonesia 🇮🇩
Quite a voyage for a single hand sailor! Very sad to see the damage to your big, beautiful sail though. It will be interesting to see the sail spread out on the floor to asses the damage and find out if it is worth repair. Did you consider just dropping the sails well clear of the anchorage and fishing boats and let the boat drift while you slept in the cockpit the final night, then in the morning sailing into the anchorage and starting the process to clear in? Back when I was cruising 45 years ago, long before all the excellent nav aids you have now, I would wait offshore until the sun came up before going into an anchorage or harbor. I could catch up on sleep and be much better physically and mentally that way. But if there is a strong current where you were that might not be safe I know. Things are much different now.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching. Yea it for sure gonna be interesting to see if it’s even possible to fix but I doubt it’s worth it. At the moment this will not be priority due to my limited budget. In this waters it’s not a good idea to just drift without sails. Instead I put on lights at the mast head as well to show my sails and the size of boat I’m sailing. This worked very well. A tiny dinghy don’t wanna go into a battle with something that looks big in the dark. The reason I chose Saumlaki as entrance Port was the easy access and navigation. Almost no fishing until your in the channel. The anchorage is huge and very easy to navigate at night. All the best
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 I believe this sail is so teared apart and destroyed it might be beyond repairable. Sadly it’s how it is sometimes. I really love this sail. Anyway, thank you so much for being here🙏🏻
Love it! In its purest form indeed, you could sell the sound of sailing, I have tinnitus and have put it on a loop, Off I go to Z land with dreams of staining. Cheers. Fair winds
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 Sometimes I’m in conflict with myself. I know average people have a very short timespan/focus so if it’s not moving fast enough people fall off. At the same time sometimes it feels wrong to jump to fast through sceneries as my reality is eg the smooth sailing with my code lasted nonstop for several days. So how to share the reality that it’s actually going over a long time without boring people. It’s a difficult balance. I try to be genuine and share as real life as possible. All the best
It’s definitely the best way to be present in your own life, and to feel alive every day. I have had a “normal” life before, feeling my life just slowly passing watching myself on autopilot. Life is so short so being able to live it this way is such a blessing I don’t take for granted. All the best
Ha ha😆 Yeah to some what I have just done is insane. But it’s perfectly yet nothing I would recommend as it’s not for everyone. Thank you so much for watching
Thank you so much my friend 🙏🏻 It has been quite an adventure and so many memorable moments. I hope one day to have better cameras because it’s so many things and situations I wish I could share. Like the full moon sailing on ocean looking like the finest silk. With shooting stars and Marin life paying me a visit and showing of their skills. Guess I one day should write a book about it. All the best
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here! I am so thankful for all the years you have been watching and always leaving nice comments. I really appreciate it 🙏🏻
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 I’m glad you enjoyed this episode and that I managed to share it in a way that you could feel the ambience and tranquility. All the best
Tusen takk🙏🏻 Det er utrolig gøy å se at norske seere begynner å dominere statistikken her.
Bro, i await your videos every week and it brings me joy. I dont care that you're an atheists, but its a wondrous creation. "Have they not considered the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between the two, and the creation of the seas, that Allah has not created in vain any of them? But most of the people are away from the remembrance of their Lord." (Quran 30:24)
Morning Thomas and belated happy new year! So many comments and questions but will leave you in your triumph. @saillofts need to step up and sponsor a real sailor with a new down wind reacher.. be safe in Indo. Watch out for sea lice and the fucking sea snakes 😱
So nice! -- QUESTION -- Thomas, I was watching sailing Zingaro on youtube, and he took a Bavaria C57 across the Atlantic and had so so many defects and repair items on this nearly new sailboat. Made me wonder why your sailboat is in such great condition when the C57 is such a disaster. What is going on? Is your sailboat a special year or model or what? Really starting to like your one and we are thinking about it but are a bit worried we might get a problem...
Normally I don’t comment other UA-camrs, but in this case I will do an exemption. I believe the biggest mistake here is to give an inexperienced person access to such fast sailing yacht. You can compare it with giving your Ferrari keys to a person only had a scooter before. Believing it’s still okay to go full throttle over the speed bumps. The damages as a consequence would be obvious for any experienced driver of a sports car. Just as heavy weather sailing is more like damage control than sailing, being in rough seas takes skills and basic understanding. Not many yachts enjoy being airborne day out and in for weeks over rough seas. A good skipper would therefore slow down, find a good rhythm for a smooth sail. To the best for the crew, and with love for the yacht. Another keyword here is mast and rigging. If his goal was to show the world how to trash down a 1 million EUR yacht during a passage, I would say he did well.
@@SailingwithThomasThomas, I couldn't agree more about Zingaro. He's an accident looking for a place to happen. Another one is Zatara. Ironically, Zatara just posted themselves trashing an $8000 sail. It's a never-ending display of careless, braggadocious sailing. I feel better knowing a talented sailor like you feels the same.
@@deerfootnz ..but your sailboat seems to be pretty much perfect imo.. Did you "upgrade" all your rigging and blocks etc to make sure they were super strong? Why have you not had all those problems that others seem to have?
Thomas, can we ask to see your subframe on your sailboat? Is it "glued" on to the hull or is the subframe tabed to the hull with fiberglass? I read that Benateau is simply glueing their frames and that this is a weakness.
Bavaria is one off very few if not the only one among the mass production yachts that still fiberglass the superstructure and grid to the hull by hand.
Hi Thomas. Is there a teak strip sticking out of the deck? Can you do a boat tour that shows all things broken to give us an idea of how much damage and veat you get from trips that you do?
Thank you so much for watching and for your input as well. I think it’s a good idea, and might make a video with summary of what have failed. In general I have been very transparent and honest about everything with and around my boat. The tropical weather and UV takes its toll on things like canvas and teak. The good thing with teak only glued is no leaks under. The bad thing with this is due to EU and strict rules around teak you only get fast grown teak from plantages. I call it teak on steroids. It’s softer than old times teak, and obviously no one have time to wait 10 years for teak to be naturally dried out before use anymore . I have now and then a teak strip that needs some love. It’s possible to fix but last 12 months I have not had enough sunshine and dry days to address this. Teak deck was something I did not want as I knew what was waiting in the future. Doesn’t matter if it’s thick or thin. Screwed or glued. I had an old “not mass production yacht” before, and hunting down the leaks from screws was a nightmare. At least on my boat the teak is real and not laminate on plywood. So it’s totally possible to keep up and fix. However I need things that had not been accessible last year being in the South Pacific and also sailed more than 10K nautical miles. And as I pointed out, lots of rain. A short answer to your question is in general there has been extremely little problems with my boat over the last 6 years. What’s stands out is my generator, and the evolution on my autopilot setup. The steering quadrant was replaced and it turned out I did not have the beefed up version that I was supposed to have. But in general looking at the fact in miles I have sailed 1 1/2 time around the world. And in location 2/3 around the world it’s quite impressive. BE FREE has been a very strong and good boat with very little problems in the big picture, and compared to my experience with other brands. All the best
If you can't understand, turn on closed captions, CC. I don't have a problem understanding Thomas. IMHO, he speaks English very well. And, I love his accent. You can also go to the transcript and read along.
Enjoy your sailing adventures immensely neighbor! Thanks so much for bringing us along! Be safe my friend!
glad you are doing ok. Sorry about the sail.
Love your vlogs...tanks.
Apple s in vanuatu? Fresh? Didnt know apple s grew there at all!
Hi Thomas,
Amazing sailing! Any chance you can share what subscription you are using on starlink?
I am watching pre-coverage of Elon Musk's Starship test flight 3. It might be coming down into the Indian Ocean Thursday. I wonder if Be Free will be anywhere near there.
That reminds me of Slow Ty/minute for minute of the journey of Hurtigruten😄
Brilliant episode capturing real world sailing. Thanks for sharing the sharks, dolphins, doldrums, and exhilaration of fast sailing and dealing with sudden sail shredding wind change. Preparing for official boarding with extreme fatigue is a laborious task when sleep is desperately needed. Thank you for sharing. I hope you get some rest. 🛌💤
Mr. Thomas we are waiting for your video in South east moluccas..
Do you have a problem with the autofocus of your camera ? Sometimes the video is very flew..?
Hei Thomas: Jeg ønsker deg en fortsatt god verdensreise! 🌍🌎🌏 Du har en utrolig mental styrke og utholdenhet! Beundrer deg! Pass godt på deg sjøl - alltid! ( som du jo gjør). Safe sailing! KEEP ENJOYING YOUR ADVENTURE! 🇧🇻❤🇧🇻
Thomas ,
A great episode of real world sailing , and I was wondering was the asymmetric spinnaker a 3/4 ounce Sail? So sad to lose a sail such as that , it looked so very effective for many of those conditions you were encountering .

I have always wondered, do you happen to be playing music in the boat when the dolphin hang around?
You won't be able to se Asia single handed unless you have a big fender on the front to bounce off all the fishing boats and canoes
it's anxious hand steering downwind and downcurrent, ya?
Ahoi Captain Thomas, RIP ripped sail - that really hurt watching. What an amazing adventure. Glad you and Be Free made it safe to Indonesia. Congratulations!
Those are sharks are employees of the Australian government. They make sure you can’t reel any fish aboard in the Australian EEZ😅
Ha ha😆 Good one! I was afraid they where coming to claim tax money 😆
In my mind I'm sitting on the deck stitching the pieces of your sail together.
Love watching it! The sharks look like blue sharks! They are common in the open ocean everywhere... Bons ventos!))
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment as well🙏🏻
Hi Thomas, most people have never been sailing by themselves in the peace you get when you’re out in the ocean is incredible, and you can never pay for that piece anyway you keep doing what you’re doing. Keep up the good work Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺
I would love to see you in Taiwan
Sorry sweden is the country with the most islands 221 831 islands
Yes your absolutely right, somehow I see now it came out wrong in the editing. I did correct myself in the clip I have😅 What I meant to say was the most populated. It’s 279 million people spread out on this islands. Almost unbelievable.
I so enjoy your videos! I suppose those people for whom Christmas and New Years are of importance don't do a lot of circumnavigation. Just saying.
Thank you so much for being here 🙏🏻 We are all different and to some being so isolated seems very difficult and impossible. I truly enjoy long distance sailing, the tranquility and peace. All the best
Really enjoyed this passage, so glad you didn't use the engine.
you were lucky
Gonna need a few meters of sticky back for that sail , Well done > Sleep soundly , Amazing area .
I have to say the perks of a no fishing zone pay of in terms of aquatic life...
Good one 😆 The no fishing zone is for commercial fishing. I was in international waters though, and far out of the national park. Thank you for watching and for being here🙏🏻
There may be some very talented sailmakers in Indonesia who would be very interested in helping you. Bravo on your latest epic voyage.
Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here🙏🏻 I know there is a sail loft in Bali, but that’s still quite a distance away from here. More than thousand nautical miles. All the best
well done!
Waiting for the next chapter. Been looking forward to Indonesian islands.
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 I’m trying to arrange a long stay visa to be able to share the wonders of Indonesia 🇮🇩

great passage loved the natural sailing no music took me right away from the cold horizontal rain here.

Have you considered twin headsails and the twistle rig for downwind sailing?
Wow great episode! Glad to see that you arrived safly!
Looks to me that this Code is shredded and way beyond repairable?
Hi Thomas, they are good eating that size flake. Yum Yum
well done, thank God you reached safe and sound.
Well Thomas I guess a congratulations and a big "I'm sorry about your sail" is in plase. Best regards from Jarle
Beautiful! awesome adventures!

So sorry for the loss of F1 sail 😥
Love your channel 💖

Thank you so much for kind words and for being here 🙏🏻
Its good to see you have reached Indonesia safely. Sorry about your damaged sail 😔 Hope you can repair it.

I enjoyed all 3 episodes very much. Good to see that you have had a good passage and did not needed a bigger boat (with the sharks) 😂😂
Thank you so much 🙏🏻 Good reference😄 Cpt! I think we need a bigger boat 🦈
Here it’s crocks and snakes. All my favorite’s and even sharks.
Wow, cool 3 part series on an amazing solo-sail journey! Congrats! You did it like a champion.

Vi er jo ikke så mange i den store verden, og ikke så mange som lager seilervideoer heller. Og enda færre som er på virkelig langtur. Så det er gøy å se så mye støtte 🙏🏻
Why have you not had all those problems that others seem to have?
love it great show
Thank you so much 🙏🏻
Sea so flat amazing
It’s definitely a rare moment. It’s like sailing through silk.
All the best
@@SailingwithThomas thanks for the kind answer. I will be following your travels in the future. Hope you have safe journeys.
You need to enunciate when you speak English my guy. We can't understand a word you're saying half the time...js
Was that really a necessary comment? Don't think so. Thomas is a Norwegian guy and is doing his best speaking English. It works well. Go Thomas!
”We can’t understand a word you’re saying half the time…”
What is this sentence supposed to mean? Is there a comma missing?
If you can't understand, turn on closed captions, CC. I don't have a problem understanding Thomas. IMHO, he speaks English very well. And, I love his accent. You can also go to the transcript and read along.
I can't speak Norwegian as well as he speaks English. There is that!!!😎
