If you look at World Soccer's 50 most exciting teenage footballers 2007, At number 5, Giovanni Dos Santos was ranked higher than players like Gareth Bale, Sergio Aguero, Karim Benzema, Di Maria, Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil, and Alexis Sanchez.
And to make it even more legit - Giovani Dos Santos was a personal favorite of manager Frank Rijkaard who saw his potential and a younger brother and apprentice to the guy who many thought his game was similar to most - Ronaldinho.
But despite all that, today, he’s largely forgotten. So just what happened? Well, Let’s look at the downfall of Giovani Dos Santos.

chicharito next
I feel like I'm back in Central FL with this one.
Him and Velas career breaks my heart. I wish we’d seen more of them in Europe. Some of the best talent we’ve had in the last decades
Just think. Vela, chicharito, dos Santos, and guardado.
The MEXICAN MEDIA wanted them to fail.. They were so disrespectful to them. That's why Vela quit the team completely.
Bro guardado is a hero In Mexico and a Betis legend
It does not break my heart, he had the talent but lacked discipline to polish that talent. Remember hard work overcomes talent. Just look at Cristiano Ronaldo
@@gado277legend?? You mean player who remained at the club for many years and was somewhat consistent, yes. Legend actually has to acheive something. He never even made it to UCL with Betis.
As a Mexican, it's sad that we wasted 2 golden generations in less than 10 years.
Crazy really… a sleeper national side for sure
mexico would’ve gotten to semis if Carlos vela came in, that mexico was too powerful
As a Mexican, we should be used to it.
@@elbuki4006vela is another one who had all the skills in the world, but sadly he just didn’t care.
Partying and just focusing on money instead does that to you.
The photos with Bojan & Messi hurt a little bit. 3 stars, but only one became as bright as he could.
We treat teenage footballers like rock stars, but they're not much more than little kids.
Underrated comment
Sensible comment bro.. very true
Great comment!
I mean if I had all the money in the world as a teenager I would probably end up waking up in someone else's home... Multiple times a month.
yeah that’s a very true thing, given that much money and popularity at a young age can be tough to stay the path
In my opinion in Barca the competition was incredibly hard but thats the best environment to grow in if he was disciplined he could have dominated in barca or another team

As a Mexican, is really a shame what happened to him, but in the end he brought this to himself, over here in Mexico we see him not only as a bust but as a failure and cautionary tale of what not to expect from someone who doesnt care about football
for his defense he was young, at 18 you're still a baby I wished he had someone to teach him the core values of life
He had way too many opportunities to prove his worth and he didnt. He gets no sympathy from me
“Someone who doesnt care about football”
*Carlis Vela exists*
So much potential, but at least the man helped bring some trophies
Honestly I don’t think Mexico has a voice when it comes to failures😂 ……Mexican football sucks and let’s not talk about the national team.
Thanks for giving my ppl some spotlight. 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽
You should cover Rafa Marquez. Dude captained one of Barca’s greatest teams ever and Yaya said he’s the best defender he’s ever encountered.
He should do a video about how great Mexico is right now, they had such a good showing at the concacaf nations league

I met him in middle school I was walking out of school and I randomly saw him in a parking lot waiting for his ride. The first thing I told him was that my favorite goals from him were the one against Netherlands in 2014 and the one In 2011 against USA copa oro when he chipped the keeper. I asked him for a picture but my phone was dead so he sent it to me through Instagram he is so humble and was forgotten
Despite his unfulfilled potential, he’s still one of Mexico’s better players from recent years and he was one of my favorites. Mainly around 2013-15, and I’d use his card on fifa haha
if he played for his clubs like he played for Mexico… 😮💨

as a mexican i always thought gio and his brother jonathan were good theyre both at the same club in mexico after leaving la galaxy
Talent usually beats hard work, even if talent refuses to work hard. There have been tons of successful players with terrible work ethic (Romario one of them), but untalented players have never been able to play football at a high level.
Even an untrained Ronaldinho or fat Ronaldo/Adriano were better than most other attackers in their league.

That goal he scored vs the usa in the 2011 gold cup was amazing one of the best goals ive ever seen.
it was a screamer, added it in the end of the vid hehe
This shows how you really need someone to mentor you and keep you in the right track... I'm pretty sure he thought he was destined to be like Ronaldinho and everyone around him let him get away with whatever he wanted to do.
His Idols failed him and he failed himself
The opening game of the 2010 FIFA world cup. This guy was a standout player in that game, as South Africans we will never forget him. He was exceptional👌
Great video! Such a shame Gio never lived up to his potential; him and Vela were suppose to take Mexico to the next level and get them passed the round of 16 in the World Cup. You should do a video on Jorge Campos in the future! Colorful kits and unique play as a keeper!
Vela let the country down now playing in the 2014 world cup…
Campos was a striker who was used as an emergency keeper and was actually better at keeper, even though he was a hell of a striker.
Watching this video makes you realise what success is. Humility, discipline hardwork, and patience. Messi had all that. And the rest is history.
back when i was a kid watching 07/08 barcelona, i thought he was ronaldinho because he played like dinho, even had long hair and headbands like him too. at that time, my cousin idolize ronaldinho so much and he made me watch barcelona matches, but i found gio instead😂. gio made me a barça fan, but messi eventually made me stay. it's a shame that he couldn't live up to the potential.
the mexican ronaldinho 😂
This guy and Messi were shaping my youth without even knowing it, at the end only Messi came through with the consistency
I remember he scored vs the Netherlands in Brazil before they choked it away. That 1-0 lead was Mexico’s peak.
Agreed! Good ol Mexichoke afterwards.

I'd add that the Mexican media massively pressured and criticized Gio dos Santos and Carlos Vela way too much at a young age.
Vela decided to quit the National Team and Gio remained being the most criticized.
Even Nery Castillo, who was very talented as well, called the media out in that famous press conference and was blacklisted.

He did what he could & no matter how underwhelming anyone thinks his career was, he had an experience only attained by 1% of people who ever aspire to be professional footballers.
I saw that goal at 1:48 live. Was there in the stadium. It was a friendly but still a beautiful goal. Great times - back when the Mexico team still had its inspiring moments.
Despite Giovani ending up far from his potential, he still gave us some great moments with the Mexico team. The killer goal against the US at the 2011 gold cup, and his goal vs Netherlands at the 2014 world cup are the highlights for me.
yes he always played his heart out for Mexico
Being Brazilian and seeing all of the Brazilian players on 0:44
All of them pretty much flopped in Europe (or didn't even hit primetime). Pato and Renato Augusto, to be fair, had their moments in the sun (especially Pato) but injuries derailed their career trajectories.
Shoutout to #21 Guilherme who, after floundering in Ukraine and Russia, came back to Brazil and became a hero on Atlético Mineiro (Cruzeiro's main rival) for saving them from elimination in the semis of Libertadores by scoring in minute 95 and then a year later scoring 2 in the quarter-finals of the national cup to come back from a 3-0 deficit.
Kerlon and Lulinha 😂😂😂

As a child growing up I didn't know that he was so much about clubbing and ultimately that shape how your career will be.
I will remember him for his season at Mallorca Villarreal and in Mexico national team which always feel like he gave his best wearing the shirt.
And his goal against USA will always give me goosebumps what a shame his career could've been so good.
He’s definitely a mexican legend for sure and always gave his all for his country, but shame he didnt do that for his clubs from the start

Fun fact:
Dos Santos is the son of former Brazilian footballer Zizinho, who played for Mexico clubs América and León in the late 1980s.
Love the fact that he finally did a video on a Mexican player. Dos Santos could’ve been world class. But those little flashes of excellence brought many joys to us Mexicans 🥲
My experience with Mexican players has been limited to the LA Galaxy. After Gio and Jona, and now Chicarito I can only assume management were after marketing and sales as the results these “star players” have brung has been extremely lack luster.
Im Brazilian. I really thought back then he would be the next Ronaldinho. He was an very smart player.
That goal in the Gold Cup Final made every Mexican dream. From being down 2-0 and him scoring that beauty, it was the cherry on top.

He learned pretty WELL from Dinho when it came down to drinking and partying. 😭

This was a well told story. I totally forgot about him but even as a USMNT fan Dos Santos hype was REAL. HE definitely had the skill and potential. It's sad not all that potential was realized but it takes a lot more that just raw talent to becoming an elite player it seems.

I was fortunate enough to meet him in a meet and greet he did in 2018/2019 before he moved to club america. I waited for about 2 hours in line to be up front but i found it weird how it was at some random grocery store south of Dallas. He was nice and i got a photo and my jersey signed by him

Fact: Gio's father Zizinho is Brazilian and use to play for Club America.
Number one on the list of the list of 50 most exciting teenage footballers was Ghana's Sadick Adams. Can you make a video of him too? @Raymar Football. Nice video.
As a Club America and Mexico national team fan, his career will always be a "what if" such a shame.
Both of the Dos Santos brothers, Carlos Vela, and Chicharito have all had pretty successful careers in the grand scheme of things. Just because they never went on to play in the champions league consistently or win league titles, doesn’t mean that they didn’t live up to the hype.
They were all fundamental in putting Mexico on the map as a top talent-producing nation in Latin America, and still are considered as the best footballers out of Mexico.
Well chicharito was the only one of the 4 who had the better career atleast in club level
16 years later look what Kroos has achieved 😳
as a mexico fan i grew up watching gio he was the first player i watched from the very beginning of his career he gave us so much hope that he was our next star its unfortunate how his career turned out as a fan its very disappointing but i hope the best for his personal life and i thank him for the memories he did give us as fans

Jesus christ i’m old. I still remember him like it was yesterday
We’re all getting old 🥲😂
Bro as a mexican i thought this guy would have a great career 😭
From what I saw was the issue wasn't so much the partying and lack of discipline (most players appear to have some sort of pressure coping device whether it be drinking, smoking, night life), but more so the same issue many top up and coming players have when trying to consolidate their place in the football world, taking too many touches on the ball during their possessions. It worked well when playing in the youth ranks or when playing on a stacked team like Rijkaard's Barcelona, but when playing against opposition physically on the same level, Dos Santos was mostly shutdown on the club level. When he would go to his national team he fared pretty well with teammates who were able to give him more space to operate and due to purported lower quality of CONCACAF. Even Ronaldinho with all his football wizardry would pass it or shoot it on the first touch occasionally.
Being Mexican so upset that Gio and Vela both had massive potential and they both didn’t end up fulfilling it what could have been
Giovani Dos Santos is an odd player because he was a complete failure in his club career, but was very successful in his international career with more iconic moments than one would've thought of.
Thank you for making these videos on Mexican players, your video on Guillermo Ochoa was very good.
Amazing video thx for sharing a story about one of mexicos talked about young players we need more of these I think a Rafa Marquez one would be great. Only Mexican to win the championship league🇲🇽

You should make a video about Carlos Vela, the goals he scored were something else, he had natural talent, but never really cared about football.
Bojan was a bigger bust imo.
Most Mexican players suffer from their countries massive media. It isn't really their fault that they get overhyped.
But Bojan was still the better player overall imo
Bojan had mental health issues (anxiety) so at least he didn't flop because of lack of discipline
Ronaldinho was a negative influence on him. He should have followed Messi's lead instead.
