What pay tier does Detroit Lions' Jared Goff deserve in extension? | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

Did everyone forget Jared Goff went toe to toe with Mahomes in one of the best regular season games of all time?

Brad Holmes was quoted 2 years ago as saying, "It's a lot easier to get WORSE at quarterback than it is to get BETTER..." I think they'll get the deal done.
now tell us about Dan Campbell quotes... here is one " we don't need a franchise quarterback to win " lmao
GMs wouldnt say that about Allen, or Mahomes, or Burrow, etc. I took this as a statement saying (indirectly) 'we would like to improve at the position but there is no guarantee a switch will help'.
@@snow3017 you might want to work on interpreting statements, cause you lack in understanding it (directly).
The amount of Goff hate from these clowns 🤡. Goff is better than Dak most NFC QB's. Goff is a leader and that means alot.
Anyone that could make the Lions relevant deserves some praise.
Goff said that he is willing to be paid less to ensure that he has talent around him to continue to be successful. He mentioned in a press conference that he has more than enough money to be comfortable and would rather the Lions use that excess to get him more help. Whatever the amount is, it will be the right number.
so... what is taking so long to get a deal done? Goff is asking for more than the Lions want to pay him

There's only one qb currently in the NFL that has taken 2 teams to a conference championship game, Jared Goff.

Please stop trashing Jared Goff. Lions' GM Brad Holmes has said, prior to the trade being official, that he viewed Goff as an asset and not a liability when trading for him. Hence why Brad Holmes wasn't interested in entertaining other trade offers. Thus pissing off many other GMs who thought they could have offered more for Matthew Stafford.
Goff lives rent free in Mike and want to be Quarterback Chris

He has an excellent offense to work with and sooner or later Johnson will spine up and take a head coaching job. Lets see how it plays out.
The "off schedule plays" obsession is a dumb way of judging QBs. Off schedule plays are excited, but the best QB's to ever play, Brady and Manning, didn't make off schedule plays. They were great under pressure and Goff was top 5-10 under pressure last year and was great at commanding the offense.
how about not blowing a 17 point lead in the nfc chip
You're right. I mean, "off schedule plays" means the line broke down. Hopefully, we will stay out of that situation.
It's more like insurance that even if the play breaks down, the QB can save it. Your margin for error is way smaller with a QB who can't do that.
The NFL is a copycat league. The best QB is Mahomes and his off schedule play has been a key to his success. Now, everyone wants one.
@@aarondonald1611 I disagree. It's insurance if done well, but qbs who do that often try to do too much themselves instead of trusting reads. RW was great off script in Seattle, then stunk in Den in an offense that requires timing. Even Mahomes struggled this season when offenses took away the off script plays and made him play conservatively with timing.
It’s not the money it’s the years that’s probably slowing things up

I get the “making things happen off schedule” critique. I also think Jared Goff is a huge part of why things are typically on schedule and humming along. So because of him the surprise or off schedule plays happen much less.
Strong take. Sometimes you have to make the off schedule play because you missed the second read.
@@thomasblock1164 or you didn’t correctly recognize pre snap where pressure was coming from, etc. People call him a game manager, I don’t think that should be a slight, it’s great that his experience and composure allow him to regularly position the offense for success.
Jared Goff isn't like Dak and Tua. Jared Goff took the Rams to the Superbowl and lost to the GOAT Tom Brady and Bill Belichick's defense. This year he took the Lions to a deep playoff run and it was poor decisions from Dan Campbell that stopped them in their tracks.
I think Jared throws a beautiful ball. But I looked at stats which matter. He’s 4-4 in the playoffs - respectable - with a 65-percent completion percentage and about a 5-2 TD-2-INT ratio. You’d like to see high 60s and 3 but close enough for government work. Now he’s no Mahomes but who is? If I were a coach I’d take Goff over a lot of “more celebrated” quarterbacks. But assuming 50 mil is a lot I think Jared should be paid at least 40, maybe 45 if you’re generous. He’s better than advertised. He’s played in one Super Bowl and really should’ve been in a second but that loss to the 49ers is all on Campbell. Plus Jared handled that better than most would’ve. I would’ve blown a fuse.
4-4 is kinda beyond respectable. There's not many QB's not named Mahomes, brady or Jimmy G that can say better. (That's a non exhaustive list, of course). 4 wins ties him at 42nd all time
Really, he should be in the Kirk Cousins range. A top ten but not top five qb, in this system he works, and even if they pay him they should be able to keep the players together. So 40-50 million a year. But longer term guarentees than kirk got since he's younger and doesn't have the injury concern.

There’s a reason the cardinals put certain language in Murray contract before they changed it . What’s gurranteed as far as the salary pay check goes against cap anything else is a cash pay out . That’s why the convert some money to a bonus. Burrow got 219 in gurrantees over the course of about 4 years . 45 million against the cap isn’t bad especially when the money goes up for cap every year . Mahomes is gonna get 60 million paid to him in 25 and almost 70 in 26 which he deserves . If cousins got a bag , Goff should get at least what he got he’s been more productive in my opinion
Goff has been to a superbowl. The market is crazy now. He will get a bag because that's the market now. He is underrated.
@@JC-hq7iu he's been to 1
My guess is that Goff sees that he took the team to the NFC championship, the defense was mostly to blame for the Lions loss, and therefore he wants to be paid Tier 1 money. But as a Lions fan I can tell you, Goff is not the dynamic, elite QB that a true Tier 1 QB is. He sticks to the playbook, he stays in the pocket like a statue. That's good in a sense because he doesn't get rattled in high pressure games. But thank Brad Holmes that Goff has such an elite O-Line or else he'd get pretty badly exposed for his faults. Goff is at $33M avg/yr, he probably deserves right around $45M and I wouldn't give him more than 4 years max. If he's asking for like $50+ he's nuts.
Am I missing something what has Josh Allen done?

This guy has little fear. But, it doesn't show by looking at him . Goff is very under valued. I hope Goff gets what he deserves. God bless Goff!!
Goff was written off very early in his career in LA and there were a lot of naysayers preaching doom and gloom because Fischer didn't start him right away. The Stafford/Goff trade worked out well for both teams, but Goff continues to be under-appreciated.
QB salaries are insane, but he deserves to be in the top 10, though if he's smart he'll be willing to take a team friendly deal, ala Brady and Mahomes, so that the Lions can build a better team around him.
2nd in yards, 2nd in completions, 4th in TDs, on a franchise that hadn't won a playoff game since 1991. I don't see why a teams that's been largely irrelevant for decades would be cheap and risk it when you could be building something.
The NFL has gone crazy. No QB is worth $55m, compared to total payroll.
What are you talking about, right on the chest of a receiver is not where it is supposed to be? Its fine Detroit vs Everybody. Goff played with perfect stats throughout the playoffs.
It wasn’t in the chest stop it

Goff is a fkn baller and a genuine good dude. I highly doubt he has any intention of doing the Lion's wrong. He's fantastic in a clean pocket and has been dicing consistently for the last 30 games. He's a better leader than most and is selfless. Mike is so ass backwards about these situations
How mentally tough is goff to go from the rams to the lions when he did...from the city of LA to Detroit..i would have been destroyed. He hung in there became a team leader and loved by not only his teammates but his community as the lions have become truly relevant for the first time ever or at least since fontes coached.
To me the guy is on the same plane as kirk cousins with a better playoff and primetime record. He deserves to be paid similarly to kirk IMO
Theyll get it done, im sure the lions haven't forgot what decades of irrelevance felt like....yet
SKOL!
I think the issue with Goff is the amount of guaranteed money. If the Lions up that amount, they could probably get by with less than $50 million annually. If they offered 45 or more, Goff should jump on it. He will be hard-pressed to find a better situation than Detroit. Top 2 offensive line, top 2 tight end, top 5 #1 receiver with good supporting cast, top running back duo. Ford Field is indoors. If he wins here, the fans will adore him and he will have a huge payday in retirement with local endorsements and TV gigs. I simply don't see him moving on to an unknown situation unless the Lions insult him with a lowball offer. That won't happen because we have Brad Holmes, not Russ Thomas.

He just got 53
Jared Goff and Geno Smith are similar QB’s. I believe Geno is getting something like 28 million a year. If they signed Goff for 4 years and 32-34 Million a year, I think that would be fair to both parties.
Your smoking something crazy if you think Geno is on the same level as Goff 😂
Maybe in the market 5 years ago but not now. There is no way that Goff for what he has done with the Detroit Lions since being there is he worth less than 40 at the bare minimum.
Same? Look at goffs stats and resume? NOW say that again??
Geno no where near goff level what you talking about
Watch them play. Don’t look at stats. Watch them play. They could swap teams and have similar success. They both have decent arm strength. Both generally throw the ball on time and accurately. Both struggle a little when their timing is thrown off by pass rush or when receivers just aren’t open. Both are good enough to get their teams to the playoffs and neither is good enough to carry their team to the playoffs. If you want to argue that Goff is slightly better… ok. But they are similar. Like Dak and Cousins are similar. And if any team pays Geno or Goff over $40M then they won’t be able to put as much talent as those guys need around them to win a Super Bowl.
You can say he was trash Brad Holmes didn't think so and Holmes yet again was right man is a genius

As a lions fan i totally agree with this for the first time someone holding Goff accountable he played well but its times the throws he made was horrible but the fans will ignore that fact!
Homes has always shown priority to his own guys, and that includes Goff. Holmes was the lead on drafting Goff, and getting Goff was his first move as Detroit’s GM. They’ve probably already settled on a number (my guess is 46/yr), and this is a years negotiation. Holmes has never given a FA contract over 3 years, and the 4 year extensions Sewell and St Brown just got went to players who are much younger on rookie deals. All of the recent major QB extensions (Burrow, Hurts, Herbert, Jackson) were all 5 year though, and that’s probably where Goff’s agent is sitting. All of those extensions were to guys on rookie deals though. So, I’m guessing they’ll end up settling on 4 years.

How the Hell is Hurts getting 50 Million a year?
I think he’s going to “Joe Flacco” his deal. Also, Hendon Hooker is in the wings with the potential to give my Lions a very friendly contract to the future QB.

Many QBS would do well in our system, with our Oline and with our running game.
Bruh if hooker plays anywhere bear goffs lvl expect that contract to be 60+ mil a year to a 30 year old qb. So basically the exact same situation just more expensive with less to go off of.

Saying he was a cast-off in the trade discounts the fact that Holmes was a former Ram and fully aware of Goff's abilities.
Goff is one of the 10 best QBs in the league. I'd rather have him than, say, Prescott, that's for sure.
Murray is the most overrated, most overpaid QB in the league--by a mile.
Florio should always start with saying he’s a Goff hater for transparency before he starts talking about him. His objectivity is non existent. As times pases Florio looks more like a fool with his take on Goff. I bet if Goff wins a SB he’ll find ways to diminish Goff. He won’t give him his props
At least there is a genuine discussion of a pay tier now. During Dak's extension, all I heard was 'that's the marketttt!!!'.
Top tier are superbowl contending QBs who elevate their teammates (not many), next tier should be around the $25-35m (starters who can win playoff games). Below that, I don't see why QBs should be paid any more than top draft picks ($10m max).
Goff should be in that mid-range $25-35m because, without serious weapons and watertight protection, I can't see him run deep in playoffs.
Personally, I think that if Goff and the Lions are still to far apart by the time OTAs come around, the Lions will likely wait until after the preseason games to fully evaluate Hendon Hooker during actual game play to add some leverage to their side of the negotiations, that is if the coaches feel Hooker is ready as far as knowing the playbook
As a Lions fan, if Goff wants north of $40mil/yr, I'd rather they let him hit the open market and find someone else. Without Ben Johnson, I just don't have faith that he can carry the weight of that much cap space. Keep building around the QB and don't over commit.
goff is a better qb then worse cousins. goffs been to a sb, regardless of the reason why he got there.
Last year his team was in the nfc championship game. That has to mean something. I think you can get to a sb with goff. So goffs basement has to be 180 million. Probably 200-220 million. Why be cheap? You gotta pay him. Not top pay but it’s gotta be at least 210 mil. Tier 2 or not.
Brady made about $50 million more as a player, but his career was also longer. More important, though, Brady’s current net worth is around $100 million more than Peyton.
Non-exclusive franchise tag for Goff and Tua. $26 Million for the year. No team is giving up 2, 1st round picks for them. Especially since no one even talked to former league MVP Lamar.
It's not about the number per year it's about the length and guaranteed money. Goff is 29 he wants a 5 year contract now and I think Holmes wants to keep it around 3 years. Look at both of their track records.
So you just made all of that up right?

Could this delay be the result of creating a structure that allows us to pursue critical free agents?
Most likely not. Brad Holmes hasn’t ever shown a desire to go after high-cost FA’s. He’s made it clear that keeping his own guys is the priority, and that includes Goff since Holmes was responsible for drafting him, and bringing Goff to Detroit was his first move as Detroit’s GM. This is probably a years negotiation. Holmes has never given any FA contract over 3 years, and the 4 year extensions St Brown and Sewell went to guys on rookie deals who are much younger. Holmes is probably sitting on that 3 or 4 year while Goff’s agent is probably on 5 year since all of the recent big QB extensions have been 5 year.

That was not goff fault rhe reynolds dropped those passes he just dropped them
Goff isn't north of $50mil, but he's north of $45mil. He has to get more than Cousins.
Yes Mike and that is why Manning has only 2 Championships and Brady has 7. That’s also why Mahomes has at least 2 of those trophies.

Kyler Murray? It always intrigues me that people complain about Daniel Jones salary and never about how much Kyler Murray makes. Jones had an awful offensive line but managed to run and throw his team into the playoffs and, unlike Murray, actually win a game. A game in which he played great. Last time Murray was in the playoffs he played one of the worst games ever. He is lucky to finish a season and when does finish a season he is decidedly different in the 2nd half. He is such a media darling they refer him simply as "Kyler". Jared Goff is a better player. Pay him and us Murray as a gauge.
Making things happen on schedule is way more important. Just ask Sean Payton and Russell Wilson about that.

But Brady renegotiated several times, taking less money to keep the TEAM together.
Brady has an elite arm and you’re just wrong if you think otherwise. It’s one of the most underrated things about him. Manning had a bad arm, not Brady
And it’s weird that he left NE and immediately won a ring. Game manager huh
@@misinfluence I didn't say that Brady had a "bad" arm, just not "elite". Compared to guys like Aaron Rogers, Brett Farce, John Elway, Michael Vick, Roger Staubach had very strong arms.
Maybe Brady does have a stronger arm but his success was largely the result of his very quick release and his accuracy both are aspects of throwing shorter throws accurately, throwing that quickly relies on receiving the ball on a short route.
New England's system and personel were a perfect fit and allowed Brady to read and manage the game so very well.
As to winning in Tampa, there was that "defence of a generation" on the other side of the ball.
@@brianmacadam4793bradys arm was definitely elite, just because he didn't have the strongest arm ever didn't mean he didn't have a fucking cannon attached to his shoulder.

"just because he didn't have the strongest arm ever didn't mean he didn't have a fucking cannon attached"
Your own words make the argument.
Brady didn't throw the long ball like others in the league, whether that was by the design of the OC or by Brady's choice.
Brady just didn't go for the long ball like others.
Bradshaw had Stallworth and Swan to throw to and he would go downfield whenever he could.
BTW I wouldn't put Bradshaw ahead of Brady in my list. Just that Bradshaw threw long much more often.
I don't know why the media & NFL wants to force feed us that Josh Allen is so fantastic and the 2nd or 3rd best QB in the league. Allen can't get it done or F's up when it's needed, otherwise we'd have seen the Bill's in a SB, and unless I am in an alternate universe I haven't seen that broadcast. While we are at it the same can be said for Herbert.
I heard Goff turned down 3 years @ $47.5M during the season wanting 4 years at more $.
Seems to be right
All Goff does is win. And you people still can't give him his due. If you can't see that he is a top 8 quarterback in the NFL then why should we listen to anything else you have to say about the Nfl
Slow your roll, all Garopollo did was was win. Goff is better than Garopollo but winning is not a QB stat.
He isn't a top 8 QB.
Mahomes/Burrow/Jackson/Allen/Herbert/Hursts/Stafford/Stroud/Rodgers(healthy) are all better.
He’s not a top 8 quarterback maybe top 15 😂
@@shadowxps Is that why Jimmy G got benched with the Raider's because all he did was win? 🤣🤣🤣 He sucks and will be a backup for the rest of his time in the NFL or out of the NFL before long.
I'm a JG guy, but Mahomes has 3 SB's. Goff has none, he has a SB appearance. Mahomes makes 45 Mil. JG should not be making what Mahomes makes. I believe he should be making between 40 and 44 Mil. That's fair. One Pride! Go Lions!!
Nobody should be making what Patrick Mahomes makes so that is not what should be looked at. Mahomes by choice is choosing not to be the highest paid player because he always wants his team locked and loaded. You should be looking at the Deshaun Watson contract. Goff is way better and way more valuable at this moment in time. The problem with the top of the salary for Quarterbacks is they are paying for projections not what they actually have done. Except Burrow who is one of only 2 to beat Patrick Mahomes in a Championship situation. Would you say that Justin Herbert is better than Jared Goff right now. I wouldnt. Kirk Cousins has done absolutely positively nothing when it counts most. He is not better right now.
Nobody is on Mahomes level so what ur telling me is you wouldn’t pay Josh Allen or burrow that much
Kirk Cousins should not be getting nowhere near the amount of money he has received thru the Viqueens and the dirty chickens. Brady always wanted to win Championships so he took a pay cut. In not saying JG is a top QB. I'm saying a QB who has won many SB's should be the measuring stick. I want the Detroit Lions to have multiple SB's and you have to have money to place key personnel around him to get us the SB's. One Pride! Go Lions!!
Let’s see if the lions can play once guys start getting payed. Bummer they only got 1 good season out of rookie deals.
Burrow is the second best QB in the NFL. How many AFC championships does Josh Allen have? How many interceptions does Allen throw?
If I am Jared Goff. Not a penny less than Deshaun Watson. The only Quarterbacks you can confidently say are better as individual players are Joe Burrow when he is healthy, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford.
Lions want to sign Goff more than the Vikings wanted to sign Cousins. The deal will get done for sure. How many years depends upon what they think of Hendon Hooker.
Jared Goff is somewhere between 6-10 in Qb rankings....Only guys clearly better are Pat, Josh, Stafford, Burrow, Herbert and Lamar...That's it
Pat is the only guy better the rest are just as flawed
Hurts? Rodgers? Dak? I assume you're talking regular season
@Honestly__now Exactly, Goff is there with everyone except Pat & Josh....Josh is elite he just doesn't have elite people around him....The diff between Pat & Josh is Andy Reid & Kelce
@@jacobsims8307 I think Dak & Goff are better than Lamar.....Ravens is a winning organization, with dominant defense
Herbert better? Based om what exactly?
I'm a lions fan but I'm not paying that guy anywhere close to 50 million, he's limited with arm strength and mobility and I don't think Brad wants to pay him
