As a Lions fans, If anyone question this contract. I challenge you to watch last year's regular season game in Tampa Bay. Lions were quickly down to their 4th string RB after injuries mounted (Monty was out, Gibbs got hurt early and missed the rest of the game, and Z. Knight tore his ACL). Goff put the team on his back against another playoff team on the road and won with no running game. That was the game that made me a believer in Jared Goff not the 2 playoff wins.
He does have some inconsistency in his game, he's not very mobile, not the strongest arm but he is the checkdown king. He almost broke the all time record for consecutive passes without an INT this season. Led a Top 5 offense the last 2 years. Top 3 in passing yards as well. He's put up numbers and won big games.
It's also nice to see Shelia and the Fords pony up $440+ million dollars on 3 of our own cornerstone players while also spending in free agency (DJ Reader, Carlton Davis, Zeitler, and Davenport) while I see a lot of other team's players with their hands still out. Go Lions!

Over the last 2 years Goff has thrown for over 9000 yards, 59 touchdowns to just 19 interceptions. Definitely deserved and definitely not an overpay once some of these other QB's start getting paid

Goff and the Lions did more than you think last year. They won their division, they beat every team in the NFC South, they beat every team in the AFC West, they beat every team in the NFC North. They also beat every superbowl wining team from the last 5 years. And in 2023 Jared Goff led the Lions to beat every active superbowl winning quarterback's team. With the Lions, Goff has proven to be better than every active superbowl winning quarterback by beating them and their team last season.

This deal is a little worrying for me long term for the cap, but in the near term, this team is absolutely loaded. For me, I think the Lions have 3 unknowns that they want to work out favorably in order to win a Super Bowl:
1. Jameson Williams takes the next step and become a good WR2 outside the numbers.
2. One of Davenport/Paschal/Houston becomes a high end 2nd Edge Rusher opposite of Hutch.
3. One or both of their drafted CBs (Arnold and Rakestraw) to become shut down starters beside Carlton Davis and Branch.
If 2/3 or 3/3 of those things happen, then I think the Lions will win the Super Bowl. This team has immense talent EVERYWHERE. I personally have a hobby of doing draft and team evaluations for fun, and I'm just now finishing my positional group rankings for each team post-draft. This is how the Lions rank at each of my groupings:
QB: 12th
RB: 5th
WR/TE: 9th
OT: 1st
iOL: 3rd (Although this group could seriously be 1st as well bc of depth, if Mahogany is as good of a prospect as I think he is)
iDL: 3rd
Edge: 11th
LB: 12th
CB: 17th
S: 8th
In my opinion, they are in the top half of the league everywhere except CB. And that unit could quickly become a top 10 unit if Davis bounces back to form and their rookies are good. Just a few unknowns. But overall the defense looks soooo much better. Their iDL could also be the best in the league with Mcneil and Reader. That's a NASTY combo and them + Hutch should really open things up for whoever their Edge 2 is. LB could also be much better than 12th if Campbell takes a step. I'm also still fairly high on Malcolm Rodriguez if he ever sees the field. Their safeties are a sleeping giant. Kerby needs to clean things up but he's a ball hawking monster, and Melifonwu was legitimately a top 3 safety over the last half of the season.
Niners, Lions, Ravens, Chiefs… all the most physically dominant teams in the league and it’s no surprise those were the 4 best teams last season. I won’t be surprised at all if that’s the final 4 again

49ers are also aging. A lot of your best players outside of purdy is either in their 30's or approaching 30. The Lions are a very young team. If The Lions keep building like they have been through the draft it is gonna be hard to stop that team. And let's be honest The Lions beat themselves in that game. They had a 24-7 lead going into the half and their secondary along with bad drops from Reynold's doomed them in the 2nd half. Detroit has a revamped secondary coming into this season and they added DJ Reader to go along with McNeil to bolster the middle of that defensive line. Both of those monsters are gonna require double teams which will free up Hutchinson on the edge. Don't look now but Detroit is looking very scary coming into next season. If they have a top 15 defense next year to go along with that offense look out.

Jared Goff is definitely capable. He proved last year he was capable. But the team wasn't. They are missing some pieces.

2015 detroit had a beast of a team with calvin, stafford, su and a bunch more, coaching and front office was a bit shaky, couldnt beat the refs against dallas in the playoffs, difference between then and now is that was that teams peak, i dont think we have seen what this team is capable of. This team shows alot more resilience than 2015, deroit cant just expect to be a little better and have similar reaults, everybody knows what there about now so teams are gonna be bringing there a game, bottom line is they gotta do better or its right back to sol for there legacy. Had generational talents with sanders and calvin, hopefully Campbell can be a generational coach and seal the deal with a sb ring but if not its still a fun ride and i will always be a lions fan. Being an elite game manager is underrated. In fact, with the right team, you can win more with elite game managers than many playmakers. Too many guys don't know how to manage games despite being great playmakers. And that matters when the stakes and play are raised in the playoffs.
Every single QB that's worth anything, manages the game! They all do it. Show me a QB that doesn't manage the game and I'll show you a QB that's not good. Most of those QBs are 3rd string or not working in the league

But that's the thing. You don't need elite mobility and arm strength. You need good decision-making and health. And he has elite protection and support. There is more than one way to win, and the way the Lions are doing it has a longer track record than drafting game-changing playmaker QBs, who often can't stay on the field.

But you are right; every NFL QB must have a baseline of physical talent, but once that is met, decision-making, intelligence, leadership, etc., all become more important. That's why late-round draft picks often outperform super physically talented 1st round draft choices at the position. Sometimes, those top picks have trouble with decision-making, understanding complex schemes, or reading progressions, which means they will make too many mistakes. Jameis Winston, who has great physical talent, is a perfect example. The scouts, media, and fans often overvalue physical skills when the deciding factors of NFL QB success are intangibles and intelligence.

Goff just doesn’t throw the deep ball. I’ve seen Jamo & Sun God wide open deep down field and Goff will throw the check down to Gibbs or Laporta.
Hard to throw a wobbly ball 40 yds downfield, that's why Ben Johnson has to dial up only short range passes and is also why he seems so "efficient" as a passer

Barry played 10 years 20 years total in football. He retired, he played long enough. Calvin was physically shot after 9 years. If he really wanted to go to another team and play all he had to do was show up at training camp and his massive contract would have destroyed the Lions cap cause they had already spent his cap space in 2016 and they’d have to release him. He didn’t want to play anymore, he had a bad knee, back and he just revealed a couple year ago he had a ton of u diagnosed concussions.

Joy does not have enough knowledge about the game to be a broadcaster. You would get tired of her commentary after 2 games. This is why they turn QBs into broadcasters because they really know the game.

It’s not that Goff is worth that much individually. It’s that the QB position is that valuable, and Goff is talented enough and is the best chance the Lions have to win right now.
He’s an extremely accurate passer. With the talent around him, that makes him a top 5 QB… all that together can and will win a Super Bowl.

@@prestonlarson6926 Mathew throws a better ball hands down, no comparison, Jared on the Lions shows more leadership than Mathew ever did. I have lived in Michigan all my life. It was time to part ways with Stafford because mentally he was ready to leave and the fans were ready also. Jared needs to tighten up his spiral and we will be fine.

Jared Goff is good solid QB. Now does he deserve 53 mil? No! But that’s the market it’s the going rate.
Now Goff is a QB you win with and not because of. If you ask Jared to fit the team and be the bus driver he is not your guy. But if you tell him "hey man you can drive the car but no speed and don’t crash my car" he is your guy.

Analytics on 4th down attempts don’t account how players feel when they don’t make it. After we failed on that last one, and then Gibbs fumbled… the fellas were shook and weren’t the same. I think we need to keep our aggressiveness but maybe give them guys a break sometimes.
