The problem that often happens when talking about liking a thing that's unpopular is this sort of knee jerk instinct to get really defensive about it. Like you take the general consensus of people shitting on the thing as kind of a personal slight and thus you get into that aggressive fight or flight mode where you start calling everyone who has the opposite opinion a tryhard or something.
I'm very guilty of doing this.

    • @laststep56
      @laststep56 3 роки тому +17

This is often the real problem with liking unpopular things. Don't get defensive about your likes, don't go around giving it any objective stances of quality or say things like "this is the game of the year". Just like it, and tell anyone who doesn't like it that that's fine.

    • @sadscientisthououinkyouma1867

Honestly I think the problem is failing to separate objectivity from opinion. Something such as a game can be objectively bad, but simply put there is literally nothing stopping you from loving a bad game. The fact we conflate opinion with a value statement of a game is why we have so many problems.
Fither mentioned it in the video but for example I absolutely love Sonic 06, I will defend many aspects of it and say that it is not as terrible as people say (it still is bad though) but despite my love for it I will still say it is a bad game. Let's be honest: Most of this BS comes from Twitter. I stopped using Twitter since November of 2020 and I feel so much better. Even though there are great people on Twitter and I talked to a ton of great people on there, they are being buried under the constant negativity. Not only that, I heard from someone that still uses Twitter that Twitter has been falsely suspending accounts that pretty much did nothing wrong. So let me get this right: Doing shit that is against the Terms of Service like harassment won't get you suspended for the most part, but people that did nothing wrong get fucked over? honestly this vid helps a lot. Ive gone through a lot of self-doubt and anxiety throughout a good chunk of the lockdown because of how the perception of persona and its community has changed for the worst. I love persona and smt, i loved to interact with the community, share memes, share my passion, maybe even some shitposting and simping but when the whole "hahaha persona fans pedos hahaha" thing blew out of proportion to the point people were unironically believing it, it started to take a toll on me. At that point, i felt like i couldnt even mention that i liked persona without being labeled a pedo so without noticing, i wanted to stop liking these games because of it. Every now and then, when anxiety wants to come back to me or i just feel down i go back to your "why i stopped using twitter" video. I think ive watched it like 5 or 6 times by now and thanks to it, i stopped using twitter. Ive been overall just better with myself, anxiety doesnt kick in and ive just been happier. yo i know this comment is 2 months old now but like ive felt exactly the same way as you and i started to become really insecure about liking persona because of how much more negative the perception of its community has gotten and the "funny haha pedo jokes". as someone who likes persona a little bit more than smt not because i think its better, but because the more down to earth setting and slice of life stuff really resonated with me i kinda beat myself up about liking it so much for a while and felt really bad for resonating with those games as much as i did. i know how stupid that mindset was and i think i'm breaking out of it, but i felt that way for a pretty long time because of how much i genuinely loved those games. idk i just saw this comment and felt like you went through the same thing i was feeling so i just wanted to reply and i hope you continue to enjoy the things you like and not let others ruin something special to you, weather it be persona, smt, or anything else.

    • @BillyFrost1865
      @BillyFrost1865 3 роки тому +2

@@wombocorp yeah i went through the same thing but i dont think its a stupid mindset at all. Most of us, if not everyone, either directly or indirectly seek some sort of public or social approval on the things we do or like. You can say "ugh i dont give a shit about what others say" and pretend youre above it all you want but it will eventually get to you and i believe its what probably has happened to a lot of people. If you like something that is surrounded by nothing but negativity and bad perceptions, of course its gonna eventually take a toll on you. As dramatic as all this may sound, it is true. Now, not only do i barely interact with western persona communities but i kinda feel like just liking these games makes me a target online which is why i dont necessarily hide it but it isnt something im gonna be telling to anyone. I honestly blame the covid pandemic on this because i remember that back in 2017 the persona/smt community wasnt like this

This was a very good video on a topic that frustrates me. When it comes to unpopular things I hate when something previously perceived as amazing is suddenly "not good" anymore because a couple of people on the internet said so. When someone decides to trash something that was popular a lot of the time I see people who haven't played it agree because they automatically assume it's bad from what little they see of it and I also see people who did like it say they don't because they don't want to be ridiculed. It really sucks that some people have to convince themselves the thing they loved is no longer good anymore because it's no longer the popular opinion to like it. The thing that can suck sometimes is that sure, you don't have to explain why you like this thing; but if the general consensus is that the thing you like is bad, it can feel isolating. Sometimes you just wanna talk about the good in something, especially when that thing used to be tlaked about in high regards. I have heard so much bitching in recent years in the KH fandom about how basiclaly every game that Osaka Team made is just terrible. I'm so fucking tired of it dude. I remember when people actually used to like Birth By Sleep. It's by no meand a perfect game, but it was enjoyable. I just wish it wasn't as hard nowadays to find people who wanna talk about the good in media.

It goes both ways. There are some groups of people who will mercilessly pile on you for expressing a negative opinion about a popular thing, and only want mindless gushing devoid of any critical thought. There are so many types of people on the internet, particularly social media, that you can get a negative reaction about anything you say. Someone can always find a way to bitch.
I honestly think that humans aren't really meant to interact with so many people at once, because it all just becomes this overwhelming blurr of noise and opinions. And people just turn off their empathy a lot of the time online, forgetting that there are other human beings with feelings just because their animal brains can't comprehend not seeing facial expressions. It really is healthier to just avoid social media and stick to a smaller group of people.

    This. This! THIS!
As someone who adores Persona 5 and has Royal as his favorite game of all time, this video really spoke to me. Before I played Royal, the negativity around Persona 5 was at an all time high. Made me really question if I like the game myself. I honestly felt like it was wrong for me to even enjoy Persona 5 when so many people on Twitter seems to hate it and even sometimes outside of Twitter. It's so bad that now if I ever recommend Persona 5 to someone I'm just expecting them to hate it... I then played Royal when it came out though and remembered why I love the game so much. I was having so much fun re-experiencing a story and characters which I genuinely loved and the new 3rd Semester was the cherry on top! It was then on when I started to become more assertive in my opinions and stopped focusing on what other people think. Those people who shove their favorites down others throats and get on your ass for liking a certain game are the scum of the earth fr.
The internet has also made me hate the word "Objective" or "Objectivity". It just sounds so pretentious every time it's used, like "This is FACTUAL bad, now hate it too!". It's even worse when people don't even use the word right. Art is a very subjective medium. There is a level of objectivity to it and you can sure view it under that lens, but ultimately what determines if you like something will come down to preference, which is subjective. I see people saying things like "This is objectively the best cast in the series" and then see someone saying otherwise. That objective claim has now turned subjective, it's even worse with Persona since this series has given us a diverse cast of characters built with many of their own charms. Like, P4's and P5's character developments - aside from their introduction arcs - occur in the SLs/Confidants while P3's character development occur mainly in the story; that's objective, however that doesn't automatically mean everyone is going to like the P3 cast over P4's and P5's. It's a matter of preference, plain and simple. It's as though people believe coating their subjectivity under the veil of objectivity will strengthen their opinions and make them more valid/true when it just makes them look like annoying pricks when analyzed. Once objectivity enters a subjective matter, that discussion normally loses all nuance for these reasons.
Just let others enjoy things. You can disagree, that's fine, but not everyone is going to think the same as you. It's good to have debates, but keep it healthy. In my opinion, the most important thing that matters is having someone understand your view. Convincing them is just headache, lol.
    And so ends my rant.

Honestly I prefer to leave things as they are. I've always liked unpopular things more, not because I'm an elitist but because they have a different vibe, it feels more mythical, there's a stronger sense of community and it's usually cool stuff.
Personally, I don't like to talk to anyone about what I like because I have a very intimate relationship with the entertainment I consume, it's definitely fun to have a good talk with someone but when I explain why I like it, it's like I stopped feeling it inside of my, as if I let it go something. Worse if when talking about that, I let the other person know that a certain anime or video game exists.
Another reason is that the vast majority want their franchise to receive more recognition, but at the same time when it becomes more popular it brings some problems. When something becomes popular, people don't hate it just for that, they start to get sick about seeing it all the time and being a larger community means that there are more chances of meeting problematic people, people who have no real passion and give it a bad image to the community and therefore to the franchise.
I already had bad experiences with Persona and Danganronpa, the games were relatively unknown when I discovered them, there weren't many people talking about it and you could still see a dedicated comunity, when the games began to be more recognized things changed, it no longer felt special, the fandom It was filling up with more disastrous people and in a whole they ruined the experience to the point that I no longer wanted to see anything from Danganronpa and Persona, currently I can't see anything from those franchises because I'm sick of it, I don't like them anymore, it's sad that they ruin you something you used to love.
Because these experiences I am terrified of some franchise getting a little more attention even if it's for good, like with Yakuza and the baka mitai.
Basically I fear the degeneration of a fanbase / Hobby at the point I prefer liking something in silence, otherwise it ruins enjoyment and vision,
I stop enjoying something at the same level or totally when becomes popular because:
1-I like to belong to a community / Lodge with unknown knowledge by most people.
2-Talking repeatedly about something you like becomes tiring, you start to see errors that you had previously ignored, you can even start to see it as faulty.
3-You lose passion, you no longer see anyone with true passion or not at the same level, it is difficult to find it.
4- The mysticism, mystery, the unknown, intrigue and magic are lost.
These are also reasons to avoid liking popular things.

One of my favorite characters from the sao series is Premiere and well she was a main character for a game like 4 years ago it was a good game and she had better character development then most of the anime cast and well she is well underated to me. Most people who played the sao games knows her and well like her but its well still small compared to the rest of the sao community who only seen the anime or played one game which was fatal bullet that sold more then hers which I don't mind. But my god in the gacha game community is so annoying cause they rather see the girl antogonist be naked or another Asune which she already is close to 100 units Premiere only had 4 and hasn't had one in 2 years. It makes me mad that people want something horny and booba over a good character and I had some people try to help her get some attention from a game character contest which she was in and well they attacked one of my friends cause they just wanted Asuna in a school girl outfit or Yuuki over a character that hasn't had any attention for 2 years. Its just sad that one of there games may shut down and she never got to be current meta. She is like the Ayane of Persona 4 and has a low chance of getting a new unit cause rather milk the anime then be original and bring back old characters with updated designs....

Twitter is the worse place to do that stuff, I don't use Twitter, unless I look for art and funny shit, which I'd rare to find funny shit.
I had to tell someone that a series I am into say that this series doesn't plagiarize its music, (but I didn't tell, it was more of a show with evidence) and a person legitimately retweeted and said because of men can plagiarize and all I did was ignore it cause I knew it was gonna be a nonstop, it was legitimately the dumbest reason a person said a reasoning.
And it was K-pop stans and doesn't know what plagiarism unless it's convenient to them alone. All I did was correct someone.

I feel like alot of people don't understand the difference between objective and subjective. An opinion can't be objective because its just stating a fact.
Like for example, saying that Sonic '06 is a platforming game for the ps3 and xbox360 where you control a blue hedgehog who kills robots, would be an objective standpoint. But if i were to talk about why i thought that the game sucked or didn't suck it would be subjective.

I actually have a friend who claims to like Sonic 06 and it kinda baffled me for a bit, I had heard and seen so much about it, it took a long time for me to actually say "Y'know what, I should just play it myself whenever the opportunity comes, why not"
Honestly, I think most of the issues on Twitter are that people need to stop and think "well, I never played it myself, so I'm not a good judge" as this PLAUGED the KH base on Twitter for MONTHS, after 3's release, so many people saying how bad the story is, how confusing it was, how "floaty" the combat is, and the funniest shit, was when asked, almost none of them had actually played the other games. Yes Twitter, welcome to Kingdom Hearts, an ongoing series with many plot threads than are a lot easier to follow if you ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAMES WITHOUT SKIPPING THE CUTSCENES. Of course the story will confuse you, you don't know who half of the cast is, or even what a Union X is because you thought the phone game was irrelevant, jokes on you, Kingdom Hearts HAS no spin-offs.
Sorry, just had to vent for a minute

    • @Buglin_Burger7878

When I played the game after playing 1, 2, and watching others play ALL the spin offs except for the one phone game... well lets just say 18 hours doing nothing and 6 expecting the player to know everything isn't good.
They didn't use those 18 to set up who the big characters were and Axel/Lea even lampshades this when he complains about not knowing who is who and how much of a headache is. They did set up the villains though...
...and give them lengthy death scenes because?
In KH2 they explained who Roxas was, his part of the organization, and made it clear that him or Sora would be enough to accomplish their goals but would rather have Roxas who might cooperate with them. While Namie had little use, she still played enough of a role to fill in the blanks that the reason Sora was weak was her fault and she was fixing things.
When you label something as 1, 2, and 3...
Like it or not those other things are spin offs... and unfortunately when you spend 18 hours doing nothing.
There is no excuse at all.

Three things spring to mind when I see this. Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings, Sonic Adventure 2, and Juni Taisen.
I like Earthbound Beginnings, and I was in for a surprise when I saw everyone else's thoughts on it. I seem to be the only person who does like it. I think it's still a unique and enjoyable JRPG, in spite of its random encounter rate. Especially when compared to other 8-bit JRPG's at the time. It's not quite as obtuse as people say it is, as long as you pay attention, talk to the NPC's and piece things together. Some of the melodies can be obscure, but overall, it's not too bad. I recommend it, even over the modded version (which accidentally threw the balance of the game out of whack and obscured previously clear puzzles). I don't know if it's because I played the game before Mother 2/Earthbound, but I genuinely enjoyed it.
There's also Sonic Adventure 2, which is my favourite Sonic game. It's not quite "unpopular", but it might as well be due to things that deserve their own discussion, but anyway... Apparently I'm nostalgia blind for loving it, even though I'm well aware of its flaws. Even so, I played it recently after a 4 year break from it, and came to the same conclusion. The pros outweigh the cons, and getting every emblem felt fulfilling (except Mad Space and Death Chamber). I know the cutscenes look bad, and the characters look goofy, and the audio sync is off, but that doesn't really delete my enjoyment of it, now or back in 2002. I took those nostalgia blinders off, and ended up appreciating it even more.
And lastly, Juuni Taisen. Aside from how misunderstood I think the show is, even if I was wrong and the show was a complete failure with some objective writing flaws I've overlooked, I still enjoyed the ride it took me on. It's animated beautifully, even when it switches to 3D. I would normally take issue with that very fact, but because the 3D is so well-stylised and animated properly, I didn't even care. I'm not one of those people who obsess over the zodiac, but something about fictional characters personifying the traits of each western or Chinese zodiac fascinates me. Like there are any number of ways a writer, show producer or game designer could play with that concept, and it even gave me a few ideas for a potential game. So while it's probably not high art, Juni Taisen did spark my imagination in that regard.
