It's rare that I listen to a demo video a couple of times just to hear the riffs, but this was one of them. Those speakers sound amazing as a pair, not so much individually.
Already had a Type V in a 112 cab, got a new 212 Montage cab, (excellent) and added the Type A on the strenght of this demo, sounds awesome in a 212 as well, thanks Fluff.
Definitely the V type. Its crisp and clear, while the A just sounded super fizzy, and it felt like there was a big frequency hole--but I agree that they sound best when combined.
Well, they kinda sound bad on their own (in my opinion), but when they are used together they seem to smooth out a lot of it. They sound like they pair really good, nice chunky bass and smooth highs. Not sure why one would use them separately
Im guessing he had both speakers in one cab and miced them both at the same time (with 57s im guessing or at least 2 of the same mics) to keep the performance the same for the comparison. If so, putting them together cause some phase cancelation in the higher\harsh frequencies while adding a nicer thicker low end to it that is in phase. Using two mics on any speaker correctly regardless if they are 2 different ones or the same one usually results in this happening. At least in my experience.
If i had to choose one or the other, I'd have to go with the V type personally, but I'm really digging how they both sound together, and that's what's great about music gear, is that you have that option to use whatever you want to.
Great comparison video, Fluff. Mixing different speaker models often has the additional benefit of smoothing out the low-end response, as long as the speakers have different free-air resonant frequencies.
Thank you for this! Currently I was torn between these two for my old 4x12 I was looking to upgrade the speakers. But I am going to go with a combination. Great demo thank you!
Let me start by saying both speakers have amazing qualities but the star of that video was you your excellent player and when you play your passion shows through. And you did incredible demoing those speakers for the General Public. Thank you
You never really get to hear a difference in an AB on UA-cam but this one you really can. I think you're spot on about mixing the two although I did like the V slightly more than the A in separation. I'd like to hear this with something running a P90, I really like the snarl.
I have my amp running through 2 1x12s one with a V30 and the other with a G12 50gl. They sound pretty good individually, but together, they sound awesome.
I like the V-Type much more than the A-Type. However the combination of both sure sounds great. Currently I have a 2x12" box with 2 Vintage 30s but I think I will try the WGS Retro 30/ET-65 Combo soon. Think this will work way better for the sound I'm looking for. Also fairly inexpensive.
best comparison video of any kind, kudos on such a sweet presentation. I'd probably pick the V type because I can always remove some highs, hard to add them if the speaker can't play them.
+bkeaneyboy It's actually quite a important step. thou i've had a couple of really cheap china 12" speakers that actually sounded really good and then had some of the same brand that were crap.. it's like microphones.. one 57 and another might not sound the same..
GREAT demo! Some time ago, I switched out two of the V30s for two K100s in my MESA cab and it made a huge difference in how awesome it sounds. At the time, I tried to decide which speaker sounded "better" but concluded - as here - that it was the combination of the two different speakers that just made it sound kick ass.
Best sound is when they're together. My primary 4x12 has Vintage 30's and Classic Lead 80's in an "X" formation and it's by far the best cab I've ever played out of.
Billy Gibson uses a secret pedal, there's a UA-cam video about his "secret pedal". It's a guitar graphic equalizer pedal, he only bumps up the 400 slider. This makes the Celestion V type speaker put out some growl and punch and the speaker sound fuller. Behringer sells one for $25.
Thanks for this informative video Ryan. Do you think the V Type is a good fit for the Blackstar HT 20 combo? I've gone back and forth between the V Type, Neo Creamback, and WGS Reaper. I keep coming back to the V type. I would like to be able to get a nice, chimey clean sound, as well as crunchy hard rock. Thanks in advance for any advice.
This is what I love about fluff, a no bs "This is how it do, make up your own mind" style Together they sound great, but if I had to choose one I would go with the V type
I have both. Bought the V first and played it for months with a Laney IronHeart. Great speaker, but after a while my ear started to fixate on a certain nasal quality that the speaker had in high gain settings. I couldn't EQ it out. I bought the A-type and problem solved, but it was slightly muddier than the V-type. I prefer the A-type but both together is ideal.
Were these speakers brand new or were they "Worn in" or used for a while before this video was made? I'm thinking of building a 2x12 cabinet and Really liked the V's but this video has made me think the V and A combo might be a winner! Great video!
I just wanted to stop and give you a compliment on the new Rest, Repose EP.. It sounds amazing! Going to pick it up on amazon immediately. I hope one day you and your bandmates can find Birmingham, Al.
Hey Fluff, two part question. 1) with rest, repose why don't you use positive grid live? 2) any tips on using positive grid live with jam up app? Thanks! I hope I make it in an upcoming FAQ Monday's.
I like the A. I don't like NEW V'30's, but I have a 15 year old Mesa 4x12 w/ V30's that I'll NEVER get rid of! They sound great broken in. The A's sound like they won't fry your ears as bad. Sounded good mixed together with the V30's though. Thanks for the video!
Wow! Never gave them much thought. Both sound killer. Paired up sound the best, hands down. Fluff, considered doing a WGS speaker shootout? Love your videos, keep it up.
Metal stance. Great demo as always. Killer tune. For recording I use a mesa UK v30 and a Creamback. Absolutely love the UK v30 but still haven't figured out the Creamback. It gets really tubby.... And the bottom just falls apart. That V type might be a good replacement.
Both speakers cost $100 new, V-type definitely has the high-end sizzle as advertised (and sound A LOT like my old G12-M70s.....hmmmm). A-type is certainly warmer, and by itself definitely more balanced. While some people prefer a pristine clean tone for a "lab test", high-gain distortion helps you notice the frequency response a lot more. The benefit of the 70-watt V-type is that you get a lot more speaker compression before the driver distorts, which is ideal for clean tones and detuned stuff which puts more strain on the speaker due to more lower frequencies getting pushed out than say a standard tuned guitar. If a nice smooth low end is what you want, then honestly both speakers performed well in that category. Considering most bands live just sound like a mess of low-mid mud, having a speaker with some high-end crispiness will definitely help you cut through the mix... thus in theory, the V-type is the "better" choice. Really depends on what mic is being used though. V-type + SM57 will probably get you a lot of tone transparency (as shown in this video), whereas pairing an A-type with a Sennheiser e906 (that has more midrange emphasis) would definitely showcase the A-type a lot more.
Weird, I really like the bite and bark of the V, but like the darkness of the A. The A to me sounds slightly more open, yet a hair fizzier, but the V less open or airy but has a nice bite to it. My two cents.
This might be somewhat obvious considering the names of each but I feel the V Type is more vintage voiced and therefore lends itself to British style high gain stuff, like Orange amps, whereas the A type sounds much grittier and I wanna say "chewier" and would suit that tighter more scooped American high gain sound like a Peavey or a Mesa more but that's just me
What's your opinion on FL studios as a DAW? Im thinking about getting Reaper for a starter but my brother has FL and says it's worth the money. Your thoughts? Love the vids by the way!
a really good demo of the two really well shown the differences, and i get to hear an instrumental version of your song, any chance of releasing the instrumental version, even if its after some time for obvious respecting all the band member reasons i really love your rocking riffs
So much of this depends on the amp and guitar you're using. Personally I prefer the V type...I find if exceedingly clear and warm...very articulate and not overbearing in any frequency. This is subjective too...I prefer a much brighter sound then what you have going on there... and use all Marshall amps...800s and modded DSL100s/Jubilee...with plenty of gain..(in combination with FD2 and medium to high output pups i.e. 498t....all LPs...) I have been using V30s and 75s for awhile now... Thinkin' I will try a quad of V types...The V30s, man, I love how expressive they are...but the mids to me are a bit less articulate as the Vtype...which for me is what I desire for soling. Great video dude...cool playing too....
Hmm... interesting. I prefer the V type on its own when you were just noodling around. However, in the mix for your song at the beginning, I thought the combination of both sounded best.
It's rare that I listen to a demo video a couple of times just to hear the riffs, but this was one of them.
Those speakers sound amazing as a pair, not so much individually.
As always Fluff fantastic video. The combo of the A and V type is HUGE!
Together they were great. the bite of the v's with the punchy mid range of the a's made for an excellent tone.
it would be awesome to see a video of more celestions comparisson. Very usefull vid, thank you very much!
That would be absolutely amazing!!!!!
+I predict a catastrophe I would love to see a video about the G12k100!
+Pain QT meeeeeee tooooo!!!
I like them both together (they really complement each other), but if I had to pick one, it'd be V-Type!!
These two complement each other very well. Every time my ears said YEAH both were on together. Excellent vid Fluff. Cheers!
Well, they kinda sound bad on their own (in my opinion), but when they are used together they seem to smooth out a lot of it.
They sound like they pair really good, nice chunky bass and smooth highs. Not sure why one would use them separately
+Jorgen Wu Yeah I 100% agree.
My thoughts exactly
Davy Coningx The V type sounds AMAZING!
Im guessing he had both speakers in one cab and miced them both at the same time (with 57s im guessing or at least 2 of the same mics) to keep the performance the same for the comparison. Great comparison video, Fluff.
Mixing different speaker models often has the additional benefit of smoothing out the low-end
response, as long
as the speakers have different free-air resonant frequencies.
Love that you've put the graphic EQs in there, great vid!
This is the first time I've watched a comparison thing where there was a distinct difference but I couldn't pick one. I think they both sound so good.
Both > Type A > Type V
V type sounds nice, totally my flavor
fluff i just saw u fall from ur chair
I think on it's own I'd choose the V-Type, but together they make an awesome combination.
V type by itself but both sound great together. make a good team.
They sound great together, but individually I think I like the V type better
Mission accomplished ...flawless comparison. BOTH sound mighty beefy and snarly.
Wow these blend so well together! If I could only choose one, I would have to reluctantly take the A type because I'm not a fan of harsh tones.
Thank you for this! Currently I was torn between these two for my old 4x12 I was looking to upgrade the speakers. But I am going to go with a combination. Great demo thank you!
The combination sounds miles better than the individual ones. Each one has sonic characteristics pretty much complementary to the other's.
Let me start by saying both speakers have amazing qualities but the star of that video was you your excellent player and when you play your passion shows through. And you did incredible demoing those speakers for the General Public. Thank you

I prefer the A-type by itself. On the other hand, the two combined smooth each other out so well.
Love the videos as always fluff!
I like the V-Type much more than the A-Type. However the combination of both sure sounds great.

thanks for sharing! i came here exclusively to read this comment about your expressed feelings of things you wish to achieve.
best comparison video of any kind, kudos on such a sweet presentation. I'd probably pick the V type because I can always remove some highs, hard to add them if the speaker can't play them.
Thanks fluff. I never realized how different speakers sound until this video. Great stuff dude.
+bkeaneyboy It's actually quite a important step. thou i've had a couple of really cheap china 12" speakers that actually sounded really good and then had some of the same brand that were crap.. it's like microphones.. one 57 and another might not sound the same..
+JoeyRockerTV hmmmm. Thanks for the tip!
GREAT demo! Some time ago, I switched out two of the V30s for two K100s in my MESA cab and it made a huge difference in how awesome it sounds. Hey, thanks for making that video ! it's funny how cabs are so overlooked when it gets to finding "that tone", great comparison video :)
That is one cool Guitar. Love it man.
I they sounded best together, they both have qualities that I liked, but also parts I didn't like, but together they blended and sounded good overall!
I completely agree with you fluff both is definitely the way to go
this combo.... is amazing. both do so well with each.
Thanks for video! Now i have decided! V-type for my 1x12 cab
This video was very helpful. Keep killing it fluff!
You can tell the A Type has a softer attack and feel, especially in lower strings. I bet the v-type would match up well with a creamback too
This is a really cool way to setup and show a comparison. Well done sir
Best sound is when they're together. My primary 4x12 has Vintage 30's and Classic Lead 80's in an "X" formation and it's by far the best cab I've ever played out of.
The V outshines the A by a good measure whilst together they fit quite nicely.
This demo definitely made my decision to pair the two Vintage30 in my RedSeven 4x12 with two A-Type. Thanks a lot, Fluff! 😉🤘
Wow they both sound great! I prefer the V-type for the particular song. Great video my man, happy holidays bud!
Hey Fluff, I would just like to say congratulations on that Sleep City EP. It sounds great :)
Thanks for this informative video Ryan. Do you think the V Type is a good fit for the Blackstar HT 20 combo? I've gone back and forth between the V Type, Neo Creamback, and WGS Reaper. each by themselves didn't really tickle my fancy - but together they sound fantastic. thanks for the great demo.
I really liked how the mix sounded when you were using both speakers. Cool Vid Fluff.
Best shootout video on the internet.
that a smooth combination. they match so well together is hard to like pne verse the other. it's similar to GT75 and V30 cross imo
In agree man Celestion V type, very versatile speaker on clean and crunch get well.congratulations. great comparison and chords of course awesome
Got a new bassbreaker 30,,,comes with V-Type. waiting on a custom 1x12 as we speak putting an A-Type in that one. Hoping for a similar effect.

I just wanted to stop and give you a compliment on the new Rest, Repose EP.. It sounds amazing! Going to pick it up on amazon immediately. I hope one day you and your bandmates can find Birmingham, Al.
A type is more clear sounding but yeah they sound great together.
Hey Fluff, two part question. 1) with rest, repose why don't you use positive grid live? 2) any tips on using positive grid live with jam up app? Thanks! I hope I make it in an upcoming FAQ Monday's.
I'm with you. I'd like a 4 - 12 Cab with a mix of both speakers. Great sound..
Who else sang the actual song while this was playing? :)
It's a song from his band rest repose
He wasn't asking who it was by
+El Manimal Yeaeaaaah...Yeaaahaaeeaaaaaa. whoooowwaaaaa yeaaheaaaheaaa. (there were a few too many yeah's on the EP...)
+El Manimal came down here because i knew this comment was coming
+tockusa works for The Het
I like the A. I don't like NEW V'30's, but I have a 15 year old Mesa 4x12 w/ V30's that I'll NEVER get rid of! They sound great broken in. The A's sound like they won't fry your ears as bad. Sounded good mixed together with the V30's though. Thanks for the video!
I love that prancing rockabilly metal riff in the beginning, is there a full song to it?
Riff of the year?!
When you combined the two together it reminded me of the Creamback 65, still punchy but with the harshness dialled back a bit
Loving the new intro! keep up the good work!
v for me. Nice playing, sounded killer.
Great sounds but not sure these speakers were designed with metal in mind?
I thought both sounded great but the V edged it. Both together was the ticket. Esp when you think most won't downtune, so the A may be fizzeh in E.
Wow! Never gave them much thought. Both sound killer. Paired up sound the best, hands down. Fluff, considered doing a WGS speaker shootout? Love your videos, keep it up.
I think I know how I'm going to re-up my cabs sound, thanks x pattern just like here, nice blend!
Love the new opening with the transitions. As far as the celestions, the v definitely sounded better IMO.
Individually I found both of them lacking in some areas, but the V was better imo. The combination of both was SICK though!
Metal stance.
Great demo as always. Killer tune. For recording I use a mesa UK v30 and a Creamback. Absolutely love the UK v30 but still haven't figured out the Creamback. It gets really tubby.... And the bottom just falls apart. That V type might be a good replacement.
I like the combo of both best
The V type sounds a lot crisper, but I think I like the way the A type sounds better. But I REALLY like the way they sound together
Agree
Nice to see the 6505. Was recently wondering if you still had one.
Parabens the video! I heard comments that the V-type has little middle, you did not feel lack of middle ???? Sorry for bad English.
i just bought an A-type 50w pre-owned for my line 6 cab.
Both speakers cost $100 new, V-type definitely has the high-end sizzle as advertised (and sound A LOT like my old G12-M70s.....hmmmm). That V type sounds better for the rhythms, but for the leads, the A type seems to have much more presence. Just imo
Both are great!
Excellent review. Well done. Wonderful host.
I much preferred the v to the a, but together was the best sound. awesome song he was playing :D
Luke, use the Force!
failed sounds so damn huge. I love it.
a really good demo of the two really well shown the differences, and i get to hear an instrumental version of your song, any chance of releasing the instrumental version, even if its after some time for obvious respecting all the band member reasons i really love your rocking riffs

great shootout, and great playing bro!!
Hmm... interesting. I prefer the V type on its own when you were just noodling around. However, in the mix for your song at the beginning, I thought the combination of both sounded best.
I WONDER IF THE A-Type would fit in with a mix with a 75 Creamback better
The way you play would tell anyone what anything was like let alone a speaker.
Have the VT-JR. in My 77’ Peavey Backstage 30 haven’t tested it yet.
Can I just say that this mix sounds a lot nicer than in the actual video of the song...?
A type for me, that's some heavy midrange. V type sounds a little scooped for me.
+Erick Øsøriø depends on the mic placement ....
I find the A type more scooped. I like them both together though. Seems to compliment each other.
V is definitely my choice of speakers ... but if V + A , the sound is awesome!!
