Much obliged! Have been hunting for this type of advice, but inadequate search engines have been retrieving videos form "picking patterns" (a different topic) to the irrelevant. Not this time! Spot on! ;-)
1:20 omg I literally sound like that..!! thank you so much for your video! :) Before I saw this I didn't know what I was doing wrong and how to improve the harsh sound
Thank you sir very much ! You alone have made my songs much more blissful and I cannot want to busk and play my songs - thank you so much you’re instrumental to my music journey
I agree with him,,,,I cant even listen to acoustic guitar being played hard and harsh, if people want it louder, mic it , invest in good pickups, preamp
I have the same issue! Also I naturally want to hit the strings when going up, so I end up confusing myself in the middle if they aren't supposed to sound
Haha ;-) thanks. Yeah Tommy's been an inspiration ever since I picked up the guitar. Unfortunately his signature doesn't make me sound like him though ;-)
@@petemalins bro most player dont reveal the secrets of strumming .just gone through your strumming dynamic that was something I was looking for...thanks
I'm having this issue playing acoustic open mic's, particularly noticeable playing a G chord where the low E string was overpowering the chords and the vocals. Other than strumming lighter using techniques you mentioned, I'm also using a very light pick .46mm, and practicing at home with an acoustic amp turned way up. My vocal coach put me onto the amp trick, since it lets you practice at home through a PA (much different experience), and with the volume up, you have to compensate by strumming more lightly.
Peter Malins And I’m working on it right now!!! This is the song I’m working on. Argentinian rock of the 70’... 🙈 A beautiful song.... ua-cam.com/video/KOoELn7taKA/v-deo.html
Hi Peter, Thank you so much for giving great advice and good tips on soft strumming. It is very beautiful to listen to. Can you kindly give the chords you played at the end and also strumming pattern for first segment of g chord cadd9 D chord cadd9 and g chord and also strumming pattern at the end please. (Example down up down up down down up up etc). Thanks
Thank you for the encouraging feedback! I think the chords at the end are Amaj7(add9), A2, Dmaj7(add9), D2. The strumming pattern is a bit difficult to write out... Maybe down down up down down up down...
It never fails, there's always a donkey asking about chords and strumming patterns. It's an example man, not a song to learn. You can literally pick anything, and it would be the same effect. Ugh
Hello mate! Thanks for these tips! I'm struggling a bit with keeping my hand going when I need to make a clear silence (could you please 🙏🏽 do at least the first verse for polly by nirvana? Or at least the strumming pattern? Because I keep leaving my hand down there because I can't understand how to correctly time it. Maybe I need to slow down and practice with a metronome?
My strumming is relatively smooth, it’s just the pick I’m having trouble with. I can strum just fine without a pick but once I introduce it there’s too much noise. I know it has something to do with how I’m holding the pick/how it’s angled, but it just can’t find that sweet spot
theaidanman Try a lighter pick. Might I recommend a very inexpensive Dunlop Nylon .38mm or .48mm? If those seem too light try a .50mm or .60mm. Really thin picks like that can help you learn how to strum lighter as well. And just like in the video try using as little motion from your elbow down to your wrist as possible. The wrist should be doing all the moving. Not the arm. Alternatively you can use your fingers instead of a pick. Much easier to strum quietly that way. Though it can be tricky at first and there are many ways you can do that. I use my thumb and for up strokes you want to hook your thumb. With a bit of practice you might find that is preferable.
As a left handed player it makes me crazy when instructors talk about the right hand or the left hand. NOT everyone is right handed! Can you please use the term strumming hand and fretting hand. Thanks for the great tips though!
Your fundamentally wrong. While it is usually better to strum gentler, it just depends upon the feel and character of the song which might require the strumming to be more aggressive .. a great example of that would be drive from R.E.M. Peter bucks rhythm guitar is in the back, but you can hear it's aggression... then if you take another song from that record like, Man on the moon, the strumming is upfront and gentle. it just depends.
@@prettyd5322 I do disagree, I'll tell you why, and this very important for your development. If you're too careful to strum gentle so not to strum so hard and aggressive, your technique resulting in "thinking" will replace (at least in part) your technique for 'feeling". Sure, take the advice to strum gentler, but not to the extent that you sacrifice feel for how you otherwise, would have naturally strummed uninfluenced. In my years of experience, there is a certain je ne sais quoi from the "newbie beginner" which might sound more course, and less refined than the seasoned player, but I rather sound imperfect with feel, than a perfect machine.
It really be the non popular youtubers that help the most
Excellent point
Yep..no fluff or bullshit..just straight to it..love it
Wow, dude why didn't I find this sooner? Well, atleast UA-cam's algorithm is working properly.
Good vid btw!!! Really helped!
Thanks for the kind comments!
Thanks. I learn very quickly but I struggle with that soft strumming

TYSMM i just figured out my fingers were positioned all wrong
You're welcome. I hope it was helpful.
Thanks for the lesson. I love strumming softly problem is I tend to lose the pic. How do you hold the pick firmly yet strum softly?
It just takes practice to get the balance right.
Thanks for the lesson Peter.
I have a tip for you. Use a hair shaver and shave your arms. Then let it grow back, til you do it again.

I’m struggling to do that strumming pattern cleanly that he is doing, someone help
Peter respect boss u have taught me many techniques
how many years have you played
Thanks very much Allan! Happy to hear that! I started playing when I was a teenager, so actually over 20 years (I can't believe it!)

Ty I hate hearing my guitar pic slap against strings
What are the chords for the last 20 seconds of this!?
Amaj7sus2, Asus2, Dmaj7sus2, Dsus2. It's like an Amaj7 with the top 2 strings open, and a Dmaj7 with the top string open
Jimmy Fallon can play a guitar
Evertime i see the the guy in the spirt coat, his voice is totally different! Hmmm
