  • In this video, Frank Turek reasons with a student through the topics of Morality and Human Rights. This particular student demonstrates exceptional humility and actually admits the problem with his original position.
    If you are reading this description, please take a moment to pray for this young man & that God would show him the wonderful thing He has done for humanity in His death, burial, and resurrection!
    Also, please go follow Frank Turek here: ‪@CrossExamined‬

      Frank did not win the argument by any means. He asserted that there is a moral law. - not proven. And that this law has to be given by a space daddy. Its funny how you think there is this objective law exists and given by god when you should realize that slavery was accepted longer than its been abhorrent. Racism has been ok longer than morally reprehensible. Genocide has been tolerated longer than it hasnt. Tell me where is this moral code throughout human history? Seems like it corresponds to liberal democracy and progressive ideals.

    I love Frank's line of reasoning here: 'As an atheist, WHY is that wrong?' It reminds me of a C. S. Lewis beautiful quote: 'My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I got this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. ' Also, your comment about Communism and Atheism is SPOT ON, Brandon! Communism, rooted in atheism, stands as one of the most devastating chapters of the 20th century. Kudos to both for this eye-opening discussion!

      They will keep burning fossil-fuels for you, going extinct by the heat or starvation.
      Atheism doesn't explain anything, but the faithful don't have any standards for explanations.
      It cannot be moral or ethical to suggest there is a god.
      As if one should respect the suggestion, we all travel with one foot in fantasyland, using a fantasyland vocabulary.
      You know them by their works, so what does it tell you about those advocating prayer? Nothing fails like prayer in a children's hospital.
      Who advocates faith, when it is worthless if you can't move mountains using faith & verbal commands to landscape?
      What kind of person speaks of god as if we did not have a saying: God helps those helping themselves, because gods have a perfect record of doing nothing, outside of fiction.

      @axileus9327 Yes it does because why would I treat others as I treat myself? Why is that correct? If I am smarter than someone and I treat them like they are dumber than me I am not treating them like myself because why should I see them like myself when they are not, I'm obviously stronger and smarter. This is how it has been for all of human history. No civilisation has treated women the same as men for that reason. I, if i was a man, can lift heavy rocks and kill beasts, you (women) can't. You need my protection therefore we are not the same and you must listen to me and obey me if you want my protection. It is also why slavery has always been part of the human civilisation. What you're saying doesn't make sense if the person was looking at the world objectively. Why should I treat you like me? I can treat you nice if you have something to offer. But what if you dont have anything to offer because your, lets say, disabled. If it's about for everyone's benefit...wgat benefit are they providing that is equal to what i provide them? Also why should i care if we as a species survive outside myself and my family. Again if you provide something cool but what about when you don't? The bottom 50% of society are net 0 tax payers, which means they get more from the system than they put in...why shouldnt the top 50% abandon them and look out for themselves? Im sure you know the prato principle. It is only a small percentage of people, about 5%, in any occupation who provide the majority of the worth. We dont even need most of the people in the occupations their in. What is it about being human that means that we are the same when objectively we are not? No one has answered that question because there is no answer its a made up moral stance that does not come from the observable world. We are equal under God, not under man because its obvious to humans, all throughout history, that we are not all worth the same treatment. Treat others as you would like to be treated is a fundamentally religious idea that you have imported.

      @axileus9327 except that Jesus who is God gave you this moral standard. You're just borrowing it while ignoring the fact that without it you wouldn't have a standard that is solidified. Also it's purely your opinion in the atheistic paradigm because it's your morality vs anyone else's opinion of morality. Your argument is self defeating when you realize this fact.

    It is very rare to see someone come to terms like this guy did so quickly. I know myself, I was never and atheist but I had several worldly views that kind of countered reality, and I had a very secular mindset to it all. I had some friends who argued with me quite a bit, and I would fight back, and not really show a level of understanding, and yet those arguments had a profound impact on me changing my views, and some of my closest friends today, were those that argued the hardest.
    But because of my stubbornness of the past, it does help me now when I encounter atheists or people who are morally flawed, as I see where they are coming from as that was more my mindset, so I try to stay calm, respectful, in hopes that maybe over time they may see the value of my arguments. I also remain open minded, since I was rather closed minded back then, before I really got a better understanding of it all.

    • @gingercake0907
      @gingercake0907 11 місяців тому +3

      Yes and for me it’s the creation of the universe. The universe cannot be a fortuitous accident but it is a deliberate event created by an extremely omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent being. These three characteristics make God extremely righteous and holy. And God feels that His creation is a good thing He did, He refuses to give up on it. That’s God’s love. God’s love is what sets Him apart from anything man can dream up.

    • @baconboyxy
      @baconboyxy 11 місяців тому +2

      Not really. While you would certainly need a God for a truly objective morality, no such objective morality exists or needs to exist. Rather, society's idea of the golden rule, not murdering others, etc. as a "moral" thing to do comes from a human desire to survive and thrive. A person would want to live in a society without murder so they and their loved ones aren't at risk of premature death (replace murder/death with anything else that has a majorly negative societal benefit). On an evolutionary standpoint, this makes sense because, as social creatures, when we survive and thrive together we can produce more offspring who have an equal desire to value these moral standards. Long story short, no God needed here.

    • @2EdgedSword77

      Honestly, who wants to live with that mindset. Either we were created by a moral, loving, intelligent Creator for a plan and purpose. Or everything came from nothing, it was all an impossible, cosmic accident and there's no purpose for life at all. Evidence fortunately points to the first.

While its kind of a sobering thought, this is pretty much true on a universal scale. Everyone, however, can still interpret their own goals in life and view of purpose, my favorite being the purpose of life is one's own happiness. Regardless, even if you don't like these ideas, it doesn't make them false and I have seen no evidence that speaks to a moral God. Especially when we throw out this moral argument you find so compelling because it just uses idealistic and dis-proven reasoning.

      Naturally, all Atheists, Christians, and fanatics of all Religions who are mocking and degrading the teachings of Jesus Christ about the "Kingdom of God" and "Resurrection of the Dead" as worthless and useless, no value whatsoever in their own lives and existence
      will be hurt, wounded, angered, and offended by the BIBLICAL TRUTH
      that
      all the loving, kind, respectful, and submissive worshippers of the Creator and followers of Jesus Christ who died recently and thousands of years ago like Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Job, Naomi, Ruth, King David, Mary, Martha, Lazarus, and many others will not remain as worthless and useless dusts on earth forever,
      instead,
      in the Creator's own right and proper time and as written in John 11: 25, 26,
      Jesus Christ will resurrect them back to life so they can all happily and abundantly live and exist on earth forever as submissive and obedient subjects of the "KINGDOM of GOD"
      and
      fully enjoy the eternal love, kindness, goodness, compassions, generosities, favors, and blessings of the Creator and his Christ for eternity under the loving and kind rulership, guidance, and protection of Jesus Christ as the Creator's Chosen King and Ruler of the heavens and the earth as written and recorded in Revelation 11: 15.

      Thanks. I was wondering which verses the young man was referencing. Obviously, he does not understand the meaning of Jesus' parable at all. He is taking it literally as referring to a human master beating his servant instead of understanding the spiritual meaning. That is, in the final judgment, those who have ignored or been contemptuous of God and refused to repent of theirs sins and trust in the redeeming work of Jesus Christ will receive their just punishment; their guilt will be on their own heads. And I believe the eternal punishment for those who willingly persecuted Jesus and perhaps led others astray will be worse than those who just ignored God. Those people will be severely tormented and in anguish once they finally understand and can no longer deny their absolute rebellion against God.

    That kind of brings up an important point. And it's something that frequently comes up. Sometimes, on certain issues or topics, someone will only bring up what is. But then when asked why, there's like a stop in certain instances. There's no further digging. As if absent of reason or purpose. If something is void of reason or purpose, how can that be good? One of the basic definitions I've learned of good is fit for purpose. And the purpose seems to be the thing that certain people are trying to block out, erase, deny, etc.

    Hi, I am fairly new here. Thanks for the video. I was thinking of what Frank said, that we cannot know what right or wrong is, unless there is a God. I don’t see why that should necessarily be true.
    Can’t we experience through time what right and wrong is?
    Let’s say I live with two families on an island. One day I catch a few fish to eat. I can eat all the fish by myself and my family, but then other family has no food.
    Why care about the other family? Well in order to protect myself on the island I need the other family to survive. I could use the man power for example. If i don’t share the fish, the other family (let’s say the man of that family) won’t cooperate with me anymore. And i don’t want that.
    I know it a simplified example but it seems to me that I can experience what works and what does not. That it is good to share for example.

      Hello, glad to see you here. Your scenario describes a person who made a decision that they believed was in their best interest. However, it doesn’t make a comment on whether his actions are morally right or morally wrong.
      The man could have thought it was in his best interest to kill the other family on the island because he didn’t trust them. Without an objective standard beyond us, there’s no way to say if that action is objectively evil or not.
      A world with no God is like a game with no rules. There’s no objective better or worse, because there’s no ultimate purpose or goal to achieve

    • @sidwhiting665
      @sidwhiting665 11 місяців тому

      Let me flip two variables in your scenario: let's say you have more than enough fish for your family and more than enough manpower to protect yourself and do tasks on the island. Do you owe any obligation to the other family, or do you get rid of them or just ignore them?
      .
      Unfortunately, these kind of "closed economy" scenarios don't reflect reality, but where they can be useful is when you introduce elements of scarcity. For example, you have enough fish today, but what if sharing fish might cause the area to be overfished a month from now, leading to your long-term detriment? Or let us suppose you learn which members of the other family will be a net gain to your island society and which would be a net loss: do you now have a justifiable reason to get rid of the ones who are more of a burden? Further, let us suppose you encounter another tribe on your island who appears to be of similar strength to yours, and they agree to cooperate with you and not harm your family, but you must agree to allow them to sacrifice a member of the other family to appease their gods... Now what?

    Frank Turek is such a warm hearted person with his logic. He points out the problems that he sees within the student. But he doesn't deny entirely where the student's ideas are coming from. He acknowledges that it is indeed possible (denying the author but appreciating the book). It is this warm hearted approach that melted away the cynical mindset of the student and opened him up to the possibility of a more sophisticated plane of logic. As reading and watching various debates and also debating with atheists myself, their idea that human belief (broadly speaking) needs to be put on the stage of criticism and ridicule is quite agreeable. Through this process it is put on trial for the possibility of evil that it may have (and did) bring into human history, at the same time be checked if it is worthy enough to be praised like it was. But this process does have its own fallacies because how can one judge something that it is so governed by? However, the atheist's efforts do have positive impact on society from what I've seen. Various debates and discussion arising from this subject alone is testament to that. I just hope that during these debates, the atheist side and the religious side both welcome heated debate but have the decency and respect to all go out for drinks or have laughs at the end of the day. We are all of one race and therefore we are technically all on the same side.

    What I don't like about Frank is - he never actually answers the initial questions and switches it into more broader perspective. Typically when people ask about specific things from the Bible and how it contradicts it self at some level, yet he swiftly focuses on the aspects of - is there God, morals, ethics etc.? Yes, there might be a God, but that's not the question. The question is - is the whole truth specifically written in the Bible? Or are there flaws, human intercepts and personal thoughts, stories without truth? He seems to be always jumping from those questions that challenge this into just rather proving why there is a God in general..

      You are never going to convert an atheist with scripture they do not believe in. They already reject the bible, and the creator. Frank could have showed the context and what the atheist was missing, but the atheist would reject that because Frank would be using something the atheist already views as false to counter a false assumption. It is much more productive to use more worldly ideas, backed by reason and evidence, than a scripture the other person denies. People have to come to the idea God is true, before they will come to the idea The Bible is true, and using the bible to prove something to and atheist is like trying to use false premises to support a truth.

    Why has our morals changed over time then if it's so innately held within us? Especially during the more religious periods in history? Slavery, child sacrifice, burning people, stoning people, etc. Not only is some of this in the Bible, these acts would be performed by religious people who claim to know god. People would genuinely feel like these things were the right things to do. Morals also have a huge sociological component to them too. If our morals were truly innate from a god, then all these things I listed above would probably have not had their place in history like they did. Slavery is permitted in the Bible, yet in our society today we intuitively know it's wrong. How can that be explained?

    • @rogue7100
      @rogue7100 11 місяців тому

      Slavery was permitted because in many different time periods and many different locations, there was no government that could send people to jail or people to keep them there. Many times there was no jail at all. We all agree there must be punishment for wrongdoing, which is where slavery in the Bible came in. The problem is, people seem to think its the exact same kind of slavery we have seen in more recent times, which was atrocious, unjust slavery. In the Bible, slavery was more of a way to pay your fines if you had nothing of value. God knew this to be fair, and so laid down a foundation of rules on slavery so that the slave would not be treated unfairly. It was just slavery. The Bible never condoned unjust and/or atrocious slavery, in fact the presence of rules showed the approval of it as long as it was done right. These slaves only worked depending on the seriousness of the crime they have committed against their master. At the end of their sentence, they became free unless of course the master was a treacherous person. As for child sacrifice and burning people, there was a nation that did such things, it was so terrible and vile that God Himself came down and struck them down after many opportunities for them to stop and repent for 400 years, so He has given His Opinion on the matter. Jesus Christ condemned stoning when he told people who were about to stone a woman that they were allowed to stone her if they had no sin, as sinners didn't make good judges, only those perfect by God's standards. Speaking of which, God's standards haven't changed, and our morals have only progressed over time with the progression of society and technology, which is why we have no use for just slavery anymore in most parts of the world. There is, however, still *unjust* slavery present in our world, but to a much smaller degree. That begs the question, why does God allow it? Well, one might wonder why God allows anyone to exist, considering all the atrocities every one of us have done. No one is perfect, which means we have all broken God's standards, and are deserving of divine punishment. Which makes us part of the problem. If we are all evil, we are all deserving of damnation as much as the next person. That's where the sacrifice of Christ, our one true King, comes in. He paid the fine so that we may live. If God is the progenitor of all goodness, that makes Him the master of all virtue, including humility. And what is more humbling than coming down from your divine status to live with the sinful peons that break your rules, ignore your calls, curse your name every day, and allow them to spit on you, beat you, and ultimately, murder and humiliate you, all so that they may have a chance to live by your side? There is no greater act of love depicted in the history of humanity, which is why its so serious that you should find Him. I would not spend half an hour of my time writing this if I thought your salvation wasn't important. The fact that you are watching these kind of videos shows you are on the right path and your curiosity is being rewarded by Him and Him alone. He loves you, more than you know. God bless you, thank you for reading.

      UA-cam is hard to get a forum to get in-depth answers like you were looking for. Going to a good church with people that are thinkers like you should be a big help. Slavery in biblical setting was something like filing bankruptcy is today. For a set time slaves had restrictions on freedom because they had incurred too much debt to others.
      To answer this properly you need to understand Israel was a nation of slaves that escaped from Egypt so do you think they would've treated slaves terribly ? Man is prone towards sin so of course man did treat slaves poorly in many cases. This is why we need to love and fear God and walk in his ways.

      Your eisegetical hermeneutics , as it regards to slavery in the Bible, is wrong. You should actually read the biblical passages. I agree with your interpretation as it relates to Israelites slaves only.
      Regardless, don't you think that owning humans in any capacity is immoral? The bible has policies like the prohibitions of wearing mixed fabrics and boiling a calf in its mother's milk. Don't you think that prohibiting owning humans should also be a rule of an omnibenevolent deity?

    "I want humans to just work together to better society, I don't see the need for a perfect identity above." So the last 2,000+ years of empirical failure suggests we can do it on our own? It's quite ailen to me to see all these centuries of complete bloodshed, mayhem, destruction, deceit, war and debauchery and then say in the same breath, what need do we have of a God? Let's just come together and build the better tomorrow. Humans have tried that in their own power since Adam and Eve fell, it hasn't happened, and it's not going to happen. I think people also inherently do things to survive as a species, it's encoded in us to be primed for survival. I don't think that draws from a moral structure which then leads to God. Our species is just good at surviving and we know murder is no good for survival of the tribe. I like some of this guy's arguments... but don't like when he uses this standpoint.

      human beings are seemingly the worst of all species at surviving. we are unable to adapt to ouyr surroundings without destructing the rest of the environment around us. we destroy the world around us for the benefit of our limited time on the earth while ignoring the consequences to our future generations which will make it even harder for them to perpetuate our species.. we are unable to flourish as a species in the short term without detrimenting our potential to survive in the long term..we are unable to utilize the earths resources in a sustainable way. we are the only species that focuses on selfish things like greed and act like its a good thing for our species overall survival.. we focus on the present without thinking about the long term future. we cant co exist with the species around us without wiping them out and failing to understand that its not a sustainable practice.. we created thousands of devices that can wipe us all out in an instant and its only a matter of time til we use one of those devices..we are unable to feed ourselves as a species without ruining our chances to feed ourselves in the long term.. we cant figure out how to control our popuation numbers in a sustainable way. we cant figure out how to progress technologically without ruining our chances to maintain the progression in the long term.. etc etc etc etc etc the list goes on.... we are the worst species on this planet when it comes to maintaining a balance on our planet for the long term future...

    If there isn't an intelligent mind guiding the reality we live in, what objective, built in mechanism is assessing stimuli and responding in a way that programs "progression"?
    We don't just assume computers just happened to stumble upon intelligently guided algorithmic responses to stimuli, we know an intelligent programmer put it there..
    How in the world could something become "better" or different without a preprogrammed disposition to respond to specific stimuli with specific mutations.
    The potential and programming already existed to allow for this.
    If it makes no sense for a computer to be able to do this, it's pretty illogical to assume a non personal, random series of cosmic events could spawn consciousness from lightning striking a pool of water and then doing the impossible on it's own.
    I don't care how smart you think you are, that's not logical whatsoever and it's harder to believe that than to believe in a designer.

Good or bad can't exist without a moral standard , if there's no original model to compare it to then it's not bad if i kill someone , why would it be ? Since from the atheist view there's no God , there should be no good or bad , there should be us living , dying and disappearing into nothingness that's it . Is a CIA agent bad for killing someone he was ordered to? Is a soldier bad for killing someone else whose only fault is wearing a different uniform? All of these people are getting medals for killing people.

It’s very clever because he convinces people the question has been answered & everyone walks away happy

Like the guy on stage asks " without god as a standard you could just say murder is ok" ... yeah but some have use god as justification to kill. Also he said that the guy asking questions just decided personally whats morallyright or wrong but without proof that god actually exists the laws you follow are essentially just the personally thought up morals of some dudes who lived 1000s of years ago.
