- In today's Tip of the Day I show you how to adjust focal distance and aperture on your cameras in Source Filmmaker, allowing you to create interesting focal and zoom effects- such as making the foreground object blurry while the background is crisp, and vice versa.
1 1/2 hour for 1 Minute? Thank god I'm only making posters :'D
Yesterday I made a poster and it took me the same amount of time to render because of my bad internet connection. What made it worse, I was at school and out of plugs where to put my laptop in so my battery wouldn't die. It finished right before it zipped shut, thank god..
Easy to understand, smooth voice, and very informatove. Thank you for this video. I downloaded SFM recently and Ive managed to convert my custom models to work in SFM. So i have high hopes to animate there haha. Blender is good for creating but when it comes to filming and lighting i find the controls more complex to learn compared to sfm.
You sound like a text-to-speech robot XD
ya i thinked dat too
yeah, at first i as well tought that lol
wow man subbed now , amazing voice, good explained the focal distance, no annoying noises while recording and smoothe talking amazing videos keep it up man
I hope I use this tip for future movies! Thank you!
I know this is a really old video but I just got into SFM today and "finished" my first scene. Considering it was my frist project I was actually quite happy with the result, but felt that there was something missing to it. Turns out it was focal distance. This really upped the result by quite a bit and without this tutorial I probably wouldn't have figured out how to do it myself. Thanks!
These videos are a great resource. Thank you!
Heavily Agreed!
*not aperture science* then why are you a text to speech robot
oh my god this is the tutorial ive needed for a very long time, thank god.
Great tutorial , i am new to SFM and these vid's have helped me loads !
Thank you so much!
P.S my PC is so bad it takes 30 minutes for 10 seconds full with volumetric lighting with 3 lights all with volumetrics and lots of focal animation and camera movement along with other models.
This was very helpful for the project I was working on. Thanks!
So, can I focus on two different things at the same time? Say I want both the spy and the scout to be crisp, but the background to be blurred. Is there a way to achieve this?
Thanks! Now I can make my poster much better.
Thanks for all the help. You're a legend.
Hi; thansk for this cool tip. Effectively, render time get up ! But it's such useful to see all your tips. So thanks again...
When you already have the map loaded up, right click on the viewport and pick render settings, check off ambient oclusion. Then when you are going to render check it on again so the final render has better quality.
@ Jimer Lins: Your voice, I love it.
Thank you so much! This helps me out a lot! You are awesome!!!!
Just before I render my last clip, I saw this tutorial and found out the focal stuff I've done would be useless without aperture, you just save a part of my clip quality dude.
Can you make a complete tutorial for exporting in high quality (-sfm_res....) with GOOD SHADOWS but without using uncompressed stuff (about 3Go for 2 sec lolz) ?
Would be really usefull for everyone.
Helpful video ! Thank you :D
+Balbert Dickens if you just render it all the way through it will look like its supposed to
Hooooly shit, holy shit, holy shit. This was really helpful to me. Will help much with my current project.
High quality = large files. That's the point. Check out the tutorials for SSAO optimization to help with model surface shadows. As far as export image quality, the less compression the better the image. h264 is efficient in terms of quality vs size, but is still heavily compressed and is not a good export codec when you still need to upload to youtube or vimeo. However, you'd probably be fine using h264 if you don't have super high standards (i.e., you're uploading to youtube or vimeo).
maybe i missed it in the video, but im having trouble changing the focaldistance (its pretty much in numbers and cant be edited)
Any clues?
Do does that mean that I shouldn't have 16 at depthOfFieldQuality? What is a sample?
Aw man.I thought that I was going to learn how to be the new aperture science manager.
very helpful, thank you
So, I have a problem... my focal distance doesn't go all the way where I want it to go. Is there a way I can extend the distance???
right click the slider and revamp it
I wonder if I should start utilizing the motion editor more. I have been using graph editor for pretty much any change in motion besides lipsync, and using the motion editor for anything I want changed across the whole film. However I do see you can get some pretty interesting animation out of it.
Thanks, I've been really wanting to know how to use DoF
lol I like how you had to point out that it isn't Aperture Science
thanx man helped me a lot
YOU HAVE OVER 9000 SUBSCRIBERS
alot of help, thank you
Спасибо , не зря учил английский , хороший голос; )
So the samples are sort of a scale?
But it is divided for the depthOfFieldQuality-value? I think i get it now, thanks :)
i think i have a crush on his voice
Thank you so much for this!
I followed the steps, but it doesn't show any difference. Would anyone happen to know why?
Right click Focal Distance and click "Remap Slider Range"
thank you!
How did you make your focal distance so far away? mine has a limit that doesn't go near as far as yours.
The focal plane won't move when I change the focal distance
thanks! this really helped me! :D
Question for the placement of the focal point: When you move the camera while having a specific focal point, does it stay at that exact position in the world, or does it follow the camera's position?
Does upping samples when exporting have the same effect as editing 'quality' in camera options manually?
Hey whats your pc specs and love the vid new sub
how can i increase max focal distane
is it possible to make the focal distance have a larger radius?
Thanks, this really helped :)
Your a God, i love you
Capitalize every I and you're*
I thought this was AI, but realized this was 11 years ago
Has anyone told you you have a very pleasant voice?
Is there a tutorial for adding motion blur to objects?
I don't get any blurring when I do this. I assume it's a problem on my end though.
Yay i allays come here when i forget stuff xD
dam this is cool thanks
Does Source Filmmaker take advantage of CUDA?
you sound a lot like postal dude
My SFM has been very laggy as of late and it's nigh on impossible when it comes to loading map's in a reasonable amount of time. Any ideas?
You should make a tutorial on optimizing SFM for use.. for instance: launch options, settings, fixes, etc.
keep up the excellent work
your voice is fucking beautiful
Is there a way just record z-depth pass, so I can use it in After Effects?
So How do you blurrify the Background?
You piss on your computer screen
Kyoko Sakura That isn't funny. Go to the corner
What corner?
Kyoko Sakura the corner of the universe
Kyoko Sakura You go sit in the I'll spank you into italy corner
Thanks! :)
What kind of a beast rig do you hold at your desk?
the focal distance displayer doesn't move when I move the focalDistance slider.... anyone know how to fix this?
Make sure you have clicked on your camera on the list of objects, and you are on the motion editor
For me, it works until I play it back. Whenever I play the clip, the blur goes away completely.
I believe it will render it with the blur
I changed the focal distance, aperture, and depth of field quality but nothing happened.
HOW DO YOU DO I PUT WHITE BACKGROUND
+Char 18299 White background, Im assuming you mean the aperture, this video explains that
Aperture science indeed
Hey i cant move my focal distance or aperture? Please Help!
it doesnt work. i change the aperture and nothing happens(ps i dont give a flying crap on if im late)
Is there way to increase focal distance more than 200?
+izvarzone Right click the slider, click "Remap", then turn up the max to whatever you want. Then turn it all the way up to get your desired distance.
my aperture doesn't even work... it does nothing and changes nothing
It does you just need to wait
Bingol did you switch to clip editor after editing it? After switching to clip editor, wait a little bit do it renders
nice voice
For some reason I can't adjust my camera, it just resets itself to whatever I had.
motion editor ftw
Either select the camera in the animation set editor then move it or in the motion editor select all of time
what is the gray room called I have no idea
stage.bsp
there's a bigger version called stage_big.bsp
thanks
Here is a script to adjust focal distance more easily : steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=309686213
I think my blur background thing is broken lol
Your voice....
so deeeeep
On bodies? change textures. On walls and floor? I don't know.
what is name the map ?
You sound like a narrator or a Half-Life NPC voice.
lol the title
y isn't this working for me?!
Pretty much everyone has
An hour to render 1 minute? AHAHA. I spent 45 minutes rendering a 4s clip yesterday XD
"And i hope you enjoy using source filmmaker" look man im liking the attitude but nobody just 'likes' using the pain simulater, big apriche on the tutorial though, back to my 400 hour project
Lol "Not aperature science" :D
not Aperture Science :,( way?
Khan Academy for SFM
not aperture science
lol
Boxxy.
I've watched this video 3 times now, and I still don't remember any of this :v
jizz
13 hours for 2 seconds. REALLY?! lol.
