- Part 1 in my tutorial series on how to make Source Film Maker animations look good. This episode focuses on some of the basics and essential techniques that you should always have in mind.
I get a lot of requests for tutorials and questions for my work, so it's about time I made this!

This definitely showcases why animation takes so long. I think a lot of people assume making these animations is just about moving the characters, but really all this work goes into setting up the light and composition of each shot.
That’s assuming moving the characters is the easy part... none of it is the easy part
ik... i am working eith sfm for few months now and ur right
and if you're also modelling the characters thats another couple hours (or days) of work

Although I don’t have SFM installed at the moment (thanks data limits) I applied the lighting tips in Gmod and boy does it look good. Thanks for this vid! (Also please do more stuff like this!)

Thank you so much for the lighting tutorial, there is so much to learn with it:D The illustration of showing the light behind the turret was a great way to look at how shadows are cast. The radius is something I always struggle with as it doesn't seem to have the affect that I want on the scene, I will have another look following your video.

I don't either but this will come in handy when I do :P
I've been watching your content for a long time, and seeing you share part of your knowledge with us is really cool! I hope you can keep on doing videos for as long as you want to!
It's 2019. SFM is still one of the best tools for and animating game assets. New tutorials are still being made.
9:27 "You can still make this look realistic"
Yeah, Like as realistic as C-3PO in a Giant Gray Void can be!
How do you make yourself look so realistic in Source Filmmaker?

I just have one question, and one only :
What is your job ? Because seing how much time it takes to create those pieces of art, i just can't believe you animate SFM as a hobby. You must be working in a godamn animation studio, like pixar or dreamworks. Please just tell us.

there's funko pop turrets. they aren't even expensive!
@@Horsehater500 I think he means way more like the game, not the cuter squished versions.
Meaning looking exactly like the turret in the game just probably not the same size or else it'd be expensive.
Ivy Slater It does look like a turret? It's one of the only funkos that isn't ugly lol
@@Horsehater500 I meant the turrets that look less uhm, cartoony per say?
More like the original style, not eyes that take up the whole face and a bit of a weirder proportion, okay can we stop the argument now?
With over a thousand hours on SFM I had no idea that radius was a thing. (probably because you can't see it while adjusting the setting)
Thanks. I've learned something new.
Incredible. This truly helps out by giving out detailed examples and visual queues. Thank you for making this tutorial for those who need it!
You used the word "shooting" a suspiciously lot of times.
Just tell us the truth that you're the cameraman at Aperture, we'll be fine with that.
Camera Core. Oh wait, that's like every core ever.
What about SECURITY camera Core
That could be a thing
No.
I know it's only part 1, but wanted to say thanks for doing this. In my work experience, I mostly know Maya and render with V-Ray, so Source was pretty tricky and different to me, but I hope this helps a ton. Especially the technical aspects like the light radius. I'm so excited to see reflections in SFM. You're the man.
Valve: *doesn’t update sfm to the current standard*
Harry10UK: fine, I’ll do it myself
when i was little i used to watch your animations constantly, and some of my favorites were your behind the scenes. this is awesome.
Awesome tutorial, just goes to show there are always more you can learn. Even after so many years of using SFM i'm still constantly improving for every next project. thanks for sharing!
despite the fact that i don't use SFM, this could be pretty useful for drawing. (composoition, lighting, shadows...)
Solid intro. I had a passing fancy and have never looked up anything like this, so yt sagely served this video up and it was just enough for me to follow along and be interested in following up on these ideas. Thanks.
Very nice to see professionals put there time and effort for us to learn how they did there work and how we as artist can be better at what we do by learning from them! Awesome video! :)
a person with a british accent actually posting a pretty good tutorial

I just have to say thank you. After watching that video, and working with the lights as you've described, my first artwork after the vid was just looking so good, just amazing. Many many many thanks! :D
If I get into animation (which I might. My type of thing) it's great to have some tricks and tips for it! Thanks Harry, and cant wait for another animation.
Wow. Apparently, there's a lot more with lighting than I thought.
Thank you, Harry! Please continue this series! =)
This is a very helpful start. Looking forward to the next parts! Also, I LOVE your voice, it’s nice to listen to.
Thank you for being the person to finally explain what the radius slider does.
Thanks for your great tutorial Harry! Now thanks to you, i learned many things for improve my SFM animations!
Keep working on your animations take all the time you need to take.
Really thanks! :)
I always thought of your works as the highest standard for SFM. So it’s nice to get some tips and tricks on how to do it yourself. Keep up the great work and I look forward to more tutorials in the future!
Oh my gosh this was so awesome, I love learning lighting and stuff since I’m an artist and I feel like learning how light should be through 3D modeling programs helps a lot more than just learning it as if things were flat. Thanks Harry!!
Hey harry, you probably wont see this but i just wanna say thanks for this video, i still come back to it years on, and its a handy refresher, you're a great teacher!
Thank you very much for the tutorial Harry. I still have trouble with bounce lightings, but you probably get better at this stuff with practice. Either way, still very informative, keep it up!
To let u know the bounce light of an object changes intensity depending on how bright the main light source is like for example I would prob make bounce light indoors more subtle if the light is not that bright and average but for sunlight I would prob make it more noticeable if it’s rly bright out

I can’t believe that you can create so good animations in sorce film maker with so many limitations. Keep up the good work 👍
The only question I have is how do you have such good quality models with really high detail like most of my models have little detail like in the metal parts and stuff?
Custom phong (specular reflections) and envmap (static scene reflections). I hope this is explained in a future video 🙂

I don't have anything to do with SFM or animation in general I still watched the video and enjoyed it because it's from Harry.
Really great video, very interesting ! Thank you very much.
Something that could be interesting to cover for the next episode is what you can and can't do in SFM like portals for example.
Holy shit. I forgot about you. You introduced me to the Portal games. Keep doing what you’re doing man. You are awesome.
By far the best animation on youtube, nice job.

Harry is almost at 500k subs!!!!! Congrats!
Amazing light tutorial, as someone who is switching to SFM and use it more and more often, it is really helpful. I do have ideas for what you could cover in tutorials:
1. How to create portals with the portal effect
2. How to better edit for SFM videos (Lens flares, blurs, etc)
3. Movement...everybody seems to either struggle with movement or lighting.
4. The camera...how can we make instant transitions or smoother camera angles? Stuff like that.
Otherwise, great tutorial.
Harry you have never failed to impress... I tried photoshop and found there was way too many options that I got overwhelmed.
Close your eyes…
All I hear is Wheatley giving me an SFM tutorial.

its been over a year now, please give us a part two!
These great videos keep hitting me in the face like a rock.
And that's a good thing because *I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!*
Wow I really needed this, thanks so much for dedicating your time to talk about a platform most people consider 'dead' in some way. Once again, thanks and I'd love to see more. I'll end on a question, how do you deal about rendering? What's the best optimal setting to get the best look out of your animation or single frame render?
To be honest, I dont know or care about anything he had said. But I watched and liked the video because I love him and his work in general!
13:51, yes, i have a question, how to launch SFM?
Open steam and search for "source filmmaker"
And keep in mind it will not show up in your games instead you must hover over library and press Software
It's nice to listen to somebody who can speak English properly.
I don’t even create animations and I enjoyed this video! It was very interesting to see a bit of the process!
Thanks! This really helped alot.

@@MilesAway I can get the gist of the concepts he's telling us about and you cant deny that it's really helpful from the beginning

@@MilesAway I just skimmed through the parts that I was already familiar with and was saying that the video is really helpful, even from the very beginning.
Talk some about dat laggy fingers, even with local rotating it is still painful to do them.
The IK lag is based on how long the clip is that you're animating. If you pose them in a very short 1-3 second clip, it will be smooth as butter. If you really need to animate them in a longer shot, it can be useful to pose them in a tiny clip, and then copy the animation / pose to the longer clip. ;)
This is needed for so many animators
This is the series I've been waiting for
please do more tutorials
I'm a 2d artist and want to study animation.
you helped me alot with this video
So please make more!!
I have a question: How do you have such unique assets, as in how do you make the skins for the cores and the different eyes. Also how do you give the cores a management rail, I cant find that asset in the original game files with the ability to freely move the joints on it. Also it would be amazing to know how you made the physics simulations on the dumb ways to die video, also how you animated the characters, basically how you made the entire video.
Yes all of it
I think he makes some of his own 3D models, but most of the ones I tend to see in his work are from the content packs portal 2, black mesa, left4dead, and the steam workshop.
Doing something like changing the color of a model or editing a piece of it isn't all that hard, and something that he does a lot of. You can find tutorials for that online.
If you just want some cool eye colors for the cores without bothering to edit textures, there is a core model on the steam workshop that comes with alternative eye colors
On the topic of management rails, the original game doesn't actually have a model for that. Your best bet is trying to find some other rail shaped thing. Just search for rail and you should be able to find something that works.
Physics is something you have to animated by hand, just keep messing with keyframes until it looks right.
Animation In general is one of those things were there's no easy way to do it, (appart from mocap, Wich can be expensive). The best advice I can give is animate robots instead of people. Its a lot easier to get passable animations out of a robot than a person.
I hope I have been helpful.
Great tutorial. Btw, you definitely have a great voice for radio, if someone hasn't already told you.
So every 6 months you make three two videos.
Every of them are professional because of your hard work and how much time you take.
Cool
Who liked my comment-
Why do I need to make SFM look good when you look so good already?
Also, I have no need for this skill, but watched it anyway because it was interesting, y'know, just in case?
He didnt made a part 2 did he?
Thanks for posting this, it's incredibly helpful.
Your videos are always beautiful, in my opinion, I hope you are having a great day and keep up the great work
How do you apply texture to some models?
Edit: By texture I mean roughness and etc
Your work has always inspired me to learn how to animate in SFM, so I hope this series continues with a 2nd part.
Hey Harry,

WOW! These videos are so incredible and well thought out.
I mean, they could make a short clip of P-Body slipping and falling on its rump because of a banana peel, and it would be more cinematic than most recent major motion picture releases.

Harry is it really you?!?
No it's a deepfake
Damn man, excited to see what's next!
Hey Harry, thank you for this tutorial. For the most part it's fantastic and, as a fellow SFM-er (albeit only on the poster side), I appreciate you creating this video to get newcomers up to speed on some composition and lighting basics.
If I may, however, you've neglected to expand upon some concepts.
For light shadow settings you haven't glossed upon shadowAtten, which should still be set to 0 - if bounce lighting never happened in reality, the light should be completely occluded by objects, and in most cases gives out stronger shadows even if the rest of the scene is full of accurate lighting. You've also used 180 degree lights as an example for bounce lights from a panel - that's usually a bad idea, since at 180 degrees light calculation breaks, and up until that point increasing light FOV will ruin shadow quality near exponentially, so I hope for the next tutorial you gloss over the more technical side of lighting once more, and maybe include useful launch commands, particularly the one for higher resolution shadows.
While you explained bounce lights pretty well, the examples you provided didn't look as good as you may have wanted them to be. See, this varies with the reflecting material, but universally bounce lights are less intense than the lights that are cast upon the surface. In addition, for very accurate directional occlusion that can render SSAO unnecessary in many cases, you'll want shadows enabled on important/detail bounce lights, and at the same time alter the minDistance on said light so it barely casts through the occluding surface/objects.
I'm nonetheless happy with the execution of the tutorial, and I hope you will consider my advice here in your future tutorial videos!
Still mad that they broke particle shadows and never fixed them again... Had so many projects using those (especially with moving grass) and they’re all broken now...
