Christina Johnston - Io non chiedo - Mozart's Highest Coloratura Concert Aria

  • Christina Johnston singing Mozart's famous aria, Popoli di Tessaglia! - Io non chiedo, eterni Dei. This is the highest coloratura concert aria written and is a challenge for any soprano.
    Popoli di Tessaglia!, K. 316, for soprano, with its two famous G6's (i.e., the G above high C, or 1568 Hz by modern concert pitch - according to the Guinness Book of Records, the highest musical note ever scored for the human voice) that come shortly before the end. This aria was composed in order to be inserted into Gluck's opera, Alceste, and also specifically to showcase the superlative vocal skills of Mozart's sister-in-law, Aloysia Weber, who was only 18 at the time. However sopranos who are able to cope with the aria's demands have been few and far between, and the aria is usually omitted from performances of Alceste. It has been therefore redesignated a concert aria, to be presented in concerts by such rare singers as are able to deliver its fiendishly difficult coloratura.
    LYRICS:

    Not only is the High G magnificent, but the High C interpolated at the end was open free and clear with an ease that most sopranos could only have a third lower. This is an amazingly high voice very finely trained. Amazing job.

    Daaaaaaamn
    These are the best G6’s I’ve heard from an opera singer from today’s standard.
    Even Sabine sounded a little pinched on her G6 notes, and I LOVE Sabine.
    It just goes to show that the most famous isn’t always the best.
    Love your voice and style Christina!!!!! Slay some more people soon🤯🖤🖤🖤

    Dang. Can you imagine her in her 30’s? A bright career is an understatement. A lot of sopranos just aren’t pretty or pleasant sounding anymore. She has a gorgeous tone. With the train wrecks we have today, this gives me hope!

      @@kailyjamessokame.6028 I’m not sure if you know this, but Dame Joan Sutherland was 33 in 1959 when her career STARTED…AND she arguably became the greatest coloratura soprano that has ever lived. La Stupenda! Her “prime” was through her 30’s and the beginning of her 40’s. That being said, many people, including myself (and my 21 year old son who doesn’t even “love” opera) prefer Joan in her later years. - Fast forward to 1990. Joan is retiring at age 63. She was effortlessly popping D’s with a voice that sounded like warm liquid gold. - and not just concerts and recitals… full out operas.
      I’m a singer as well as a voice instructor. I’d love to hear you! Thirty, my dear, is when your voice will find itself. 😉

    I've only listened, haven't read any of the music, but is G really the highest note Mozart ever wrote for an aria?

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 5 років тому +10

      Yes, G6. The aria was written for his sister-in-law Aloysia Lange nèe Weber, who had acquired an enviable coloratura technique and possessed a three octave range. The arias written for Mrs Lange are peppered with D6s, Eb6s, E6s and F6s, but the two G6s in Io non chiedo, eterni Dei are the highest note Mozart ever wrote in a vocal composition.

    • @Ketutar
      @Ketutar 7 років тому +5

      Well... i'm not Sianne and I don't know where "she got that from", but "most singers lose their highest notes" doesn't mean the same that "singers over 22 can't sing this song". Especially when on this video a singer over 22 is singing this song, AND she says she sings higher now, and there's no reason to question that claim. As we have all heard amazing "adult" sopranos singing this :-D
      So - presenting a singer over 22 who sings this song is not evidence against the thesis. Perhaps you could ask the question nicely if you want an answer.

    • @lauranathalie3374

      It is right that your voice get lower as you get older for women but it also depends on the nature of your voice. Nathalie Dessay for instance kept singing till more than 50 y.o.
      As you get more technic and practice you also develop your agility and high notes
      So there are no general rules...

      +skitzo429 Actually, cadenzas and interpolated high notes were common practice of this time. What we think of as the "bel canto" era, or style of singing, wasn't coined such until after the so called era had ended. This approach to sectionalizing the evolution of operatic literature would call Verdi a "verismo" composer, when he in fact was anything but. Within this era of music, "Aloysia Weber", singers also used vibrato as an embellishment.

      +Emile Weeks No offense, but you don't know what you're talking about, and I have a masters degree in music. Bel canto never refers to Mozart, it's chiefly Rossini/Donizetti/Bellini era music. Classical era music (Mozart) is characterized by NOT interpolating high notes that aren't written, good luck even finding another recording with a high C at the very end. Wikipedia has failed you, I'm afriad.

      +MisterSoprano Look, there's no need to get nasty. Her voice has quite a bit of mask resonance. But is lacking some depth due to a very strengthened head voice. This allows her to float quite easily as well as be quite agile. However, the nature of her voice is a light one. Natalie Dessay comes to mind.
