Beer Experiment Carbonating with Dextrose vs Granulated Sugar

  • Today's video is a beer experiment. I naturally carbonate two bottles of this home brewed blonde ale. In one of the bottles of beer I carbonate using sugar, just plain ol granulated sugar. In the other bottle of home brew I use Dextrose to naturally carbonate it. Then I do a taste test. Check it out.

Granulated table sugar is a little "more sugar" by weight than dextrose (in priming calculators, the amount of table sugar recommended is slightly less than the amount of dextrose recommended, for the same level of carbonation).
Might explain the increased carbonation in the sucrose bottle.

I'm a very new novice to home brew and still finding my way through things so thanks for a very interesting and informative video. The 'wisdom' from those who know a lot more that me seems to be
that ordinary plain white sugar is the way to go. Syrup, honey, dextrose et al don't make any difference hence very keen to see your results. I made a batch of ginger beer that came out dry at 7.5 abv and having to back sweeten so now looking at lactose v 'Spelnda' of similar artificial sweeteners - lots to learn and enjoying the journey - Cheers!

Thanks for the message, and welcome to brewing! :) I would still recommend dextrose or the coopers drops for naturally carbonating. If you need some help brewing etc check out my blog and jump on my weekly newsletter: www.MakeBeerEasy.com

I know this comment is 3 years old but don't use lactose or Splenda to back sweeten use erythritol or regular sugar and pasteurized after carbonation levels reach desired amount

I brew with white table sugar some times and that seems to ferment more active then dextrose as well. also did this experiment with carbonation drops and sugar and did not taste much difference. liked the video big thumbs up

I often use sucrose (table sugar) for bottling mostly due to laziness. I've never noticed any off flavors. I tend not to brew blondes/light ales or lagers though.

Awesome man, yes I doubt there was any off flavours, was probably my preconceived thoughts on it, should have run a blind taste test. I would have no problem using sucrose moving forward though. CHeers

I’ve tried everything. Rice malt, dark malt, light malt, molasses with a hint of coffe in stout, sugar, syrup, dextrose, but I think dextrose is less fruity than the white sugar. But a month or two in the bottles the fruity flavors seem to be lesser. Using those honey squirt bottles is pretty handy for carbonating your bottles and it’s quick. Plus you get that hint of honey 🍯 flavor aswell.just depends on your palate. I find if you spend a bit more money on a quality can of home brew it helps a lot. Just finding the right one and tweaking it bit to your liking. I have a keg set up now but still love bottling beer 🍺. Love making dark beers and creamy beers. A good draft is nice but my favorite is a nice quenching lager. Cheers 🍻..

For me personally I like just a little more carbonation than not, I like the higher abv stuff, I have had issues with those specific flip top bottles holding carbonation, it may be worth doing it again with the crown caps which I use now, I like the bottling conditioning yeast as well, good stuff

Apples have fructose, and sucrose contains a fructose molecule. Dextrose is pure glucose. That is why the granulated sugar one had a more apple flavour.

so.... on my 2nd batch of home brew ever...back about 18 years ago... I got this great (if not desperate) idea to substitute natural Suger In The Raw for carbing instead of the dextrose and....we blew up 5 gallons of beer bottles with in an hour! lmao we're still finding glass shards in the garage attic to this day.

@@MakeBeerEasy I'm thinking...the brew was a porter...we rushed to bottling it up...straight to bottling after 7 days in the carboy, also we did a "fast" calculation on the amount of "packets" per 12 oz bottle as we had "at our disposal" a whole case of "sugar in the Raw"...of course we were celebrating the bottling event drinking some of our favorite Craft Beer from the local store...to be honest I don't remember if we used 4 packets or 5 per bottle, who knew! the rest is history, lesson learned...I was so looking forward to a Porter seasoned and carbed with pure cane sugar! lol

    Hi big rob
Nice one dude from across the pond in blighty . Could you tell me whether i can carbonate a keg with carbonation drops ie coopers if so how many would i need . New to the brewing game making some great brews but carbonating is a downside .
Prefer kegging as i use the kegs in my garden shed/ bar .tried forced carbing but just cant get it right !!! Cheers buddy

    • @MakeBeerEasy
      @MakeBeerEasy  5 років тому

That is an interesting one Paul! I have never tried it... in theory it should work lol.... Typically If you are carbonating a keg with priming sugar you would use half the total amount you would use for bottles... so with carb drops my gut is that the same principal would apply... so if you had 20 liters and were typically bottling in 1 liter bottles and used 1 carb drop per bottle... with kegging you would use 10 drops in the keg instead of the 20... Just make sure you have a pressure release valve on top so you can let some head pressure off if needed... Couple of things... carbing in the keg you will need to seal it with c02 after you put lid on as they are not air tight... and you also need gas to pour the beer... and lastly although this is an experiment I may try someday now that you brought it up... I take no responsibility if you blow the lid off your keg! lol Cheers mate!
