I toured with this maniac, and even after insane sleepless "weeks" literally....he nails it. I honestly believe he is from another realm, dimension, HELL. Lol One of a kind, and super underated.
@halosakte1946 I actually worked with Hellhammer when I ran Nuclear Blast USA when he was playing with The Covenant and then Dimmu Borgir. The man's a machine! Lol
Mayhem is the ONLY band I know, that IF the drummer can't make it the WHOLE band don't play... First time I was supposed to see them they were scheduled for America right after Hellhammer was done with a Dimmu tour,,,but he broke his foot and that Cancled the tour and we had to wait longer ( can't recall, not too long) for them to return. But anyways - No Hellhammer? , NO MAYHEM . Any other band would get a replacement drummer. Even Satyricon has side drummers. But Not MAYHEM it's Blomberg or Bust!
Hellhammer still has it ... And he proves that in this video! Those blasts in Psywar ... Holy shit! I think he does it better in a set like this. Playing the entire album DMDS live is just not his thing anymore because of his technique, and I respect that because that means he has only improved!
He was already incredible in DMDS, many drum fills were groovy and unique for the genre at that time, tracks like Cursed In Eternity, Life Eternal, or the title-track showed great capabilities... But yeah he kept getting better and never stopped, to really appreciate how versatile he his people need to hear him in Arcturus, Winds, Age Of Silence and many of his other bands, not just Mayhem...
I think HH was incredible too at that time for shure! But as he said in a interview before, it was realy hard to relearn the full DMDS album. This was because he played on that album with full power, and now he is using more technique than power. And i totaly get his point!
Yep, back then he was more old-school, hard hitting, although with plenty of finesse... Of course with the evolving of extreme-metal's drumming he had to evolve himself, becoming the grandmaster he's today, still at the very top, and more versatile, creative than most... HH is indeed a legend...
I'm sorry but I gotta say this b/c as an "extreme" metal drummer watching that slowed down one handed drum roll as what is a "blast" beat is just bullshit. I dont care hate me all you want for disliking one of our legend musicians techniques.
You're totally entitled to your opinion, but what comes to Hellhammer's technique, style and consistency, this guy is a top-tier metal drummer in terms of versatility. If you want speed and kickass drumming, try listening from 7min till the end and his material from Arcturus' and Mayhem's latest album. My favorite blast beat he ever performed is on the Mayhem's album Chimera, the song is Rape Humanity with Pride. Most of the American metal drummers have done the same thing over and over, I can't even tell apart George Kollias and Derek Roddy. The same fills, same blasts, same techniques and tight execution. But Hellhammer always has amazed with new stuff he comes up with on every album he's on and during live he improvises a lot. He's more of an artist behind the kit than just a musician that plays the album track over and over.
Dude, if you are an "extreme" metal drummer, you are really uneducated in different techniques: at 1:34 it is NOT a gravity roll, his stick doesn't touch the rim! Instead it is a perfect push-pull (open-close) technique. Good luck doing it this fast (270-276 bpm)!
One of the best drummers ever. His technique and feeling are amazing! And his cymbal work is unparalleled! Just love his work
AMAZING JOB HERE. Hellhammer is the ultimate drummer of the universe for sure.

Too fast
It's the same speed as in the álbum.
lol paiste cymbals (especially RUDE series crashes he uses here) sound like shit
yeah, rudes are ment to be played really loud. The dynamics on those cymbals are utter shit
In extreme music they cut through pretty nicely. HH also still uses some of his old Sabians for certain cymbals, just marked with the Paiste logo.
