- A 21-year-old US Air Force National Guard employee has been arrested over the leak of highly sensitive US defence and intelligence documents.
Jack Teixeira is reported to be the leader of an online gaming chat group where the files leaked in recent months.
At least 50 but perhaps more than 100 secret documents were posted on social media app Discord.
The documents included sensitive information about the war in Ukraine, as well as on US allies and adversaries across the globe.
US defence officials have described the leak as a “very serious risk” to national security.

It is more shocking to see such a young, obviously inexperienced person to have access to "highly sensitive US defense and intelligence documents" than the leak.
How is this shocking? If you have that level of clearance, and you work in that environment supporting a particular mission, your age is less relevant.

Adam Kissinger was a Lt Commander in the Air National Guard and states that the suspect did have the need for access for some of the information.
He joined the miltary and I'm sure he was briefed and trained on what you can and can't do with a security clearance. Spillage of sensitive information is a big no no, so this guy is going to go to jail for a long time. They should know that what they were doing was up to no good and they're going to suffer the consequences.

Well the reserve/guard makes up about 35%+ of the total force so it would make sense that reserve/guard have the same access as the rest of the force.
Agreed, although I think his age and apparent motivation (and the fact this leak isn't super damaging) should be considered in being lenient in sentencing. We should be encouraging enlisted and civilians to report security vulnerabilities, make it more appealing / rewarding than "impressing your friends" at least. (this is all assuming that the accused hacked / escalated privileges to access the info, so could be way off by the time we know more)

my brother worked in the airforce for a generals office, he couldn't talk about his job because he was passing top secret documents all the time, and he was 21. so its crazy to think someone so young can have access to these types of things, ur usually vetted and then u get a clearance level

There is a bigger picture to this. The arrest therefore confirms the documents were highly classified and the information they contained is indeed true. Some of which is quite disturbing.

National Guard employee with a very basic entry level Criminal Record and Background Check permitted open access to Top Secret level Classified documents where only people with a very enhanced Security Clearance and continuous monitoring and controls required which must apply for National Security?

The lesson for Ukraine is clear: nothing important can be shared with "5 eyes" that is secret.
The lesson for GB is similar. GCHQ has outsourced its secret information management to Amazon...and this type of negligent privatisation essentially means that this information must be regarded as completely compromised.
You're a bit confused and likely uninformed. This is a case where a "PUBLIC SECTOR" organisation messed up. This isn't the private sector, where they take security a bit more seriously than these people: Amazon AWS is way more secure than these jokers.
Not sure what the national guard would be doing with actively critical information on the Ukraine war for some 21 year old IT guy to gain access to. At most he should have access to active directory (viewing user accounts and putting in tickets to have user accounts created) and in the field access to routers, switches, only local IP addresses/gateway and servers. He wasn't getting Ukraine war info on a field op so that leaves literally NO REASON for this guy to be remotely close to critical information.

Well. in the U.S. it's normal that if at 21 years old one is allowed to carry an assault weapon around for no good reason, and they think it's good enough to have access to this type of Top Secret classified documents, and then him feeling the need to just show them around to brag. Wow .

Maybe I'm old, but I've always believed that if I needed a weapon of war for self defence in my OWN country...then I was in the wrong place with the wrong people! And in my youth, I was often in some dangerous places with plenty of suspect people, but never felt I needed more than my own wits and limbs for self defence. And yes I *have* been shot at.

That's what the older generations must start to realise. I'm 58 so I include myself in that group. He is of the generation that grew up with and obviously knows Technology very, very well. For all weknow he had a Technology, computer related job.
Our generation doesn't even think about the knowledge and experience young people have from a very young age. For us it was books and legos. They grew up with Smart Phones and iPads. He's in the online Gaming world, which means he's even more knowledgeable of technology.
The 'old guys' in the Governments, Pentagon etc. has no idea how easy it probably is for guys like him to access intelligence within an area he works in.

While other comments are mainly asking "how did this happen?" or "he's just a kid" you see an area you don't have full knowledge of but have the wisdom and modesty to admit we need to know more. IF he accessed these documents by "hacking" then there's two answers to "how easy is it". One is "pretty easy" where he simply used his existing access level (and a little know-how) to gain access to sensitive systems. The other is "hard" where he's breaking in directly. In either case he's shown that we need to patch that right up, you can bet his particular method will now become nigh impossible. There's very highly skilled state-sanctioned "hackers" fighting constantly online, when they talk "hybrid warfare" this is it. You're 100% right, Pentagon etc. probably do know the risks but sometimes a new war needs a new strategy and way of thinking.
