    Can relate! I like having one complicated project going where I can learn new techniques or really focus, and one simple project to work on when I’m stressed.

    Karoline, you will definitely not regret purchasing the Chiaogoo needles. I would suggest you also get some extra cables. Your socks are very nice. I, also don’t consider myself a sock knitter, but I have been craving something easy. So I’m on a sock kick too.

    I got the small set of chhiago(sp?) small red lace needle set. No.. 2 through 6 or 7, and it’s perfect because I don’t use larger needles anyway. I got them from Amazon for a very good price. I also got two fixed needles for magic loop in no. 0 and 1 because I like very tiny needles for socks, and I got 40” length.

    Hi Karoline. I bought a full complete set and I probably wouldn’t buy a full one again. Instead I would just buy sizes as I need them. I like the case though, it’s nice and compact. Tbh the case is the main reason I bought a full set. I recommd to buy the rubber hearts for tightening the tips, as they are metal they are hard to grip with fingers for tightening. Xx

    Hi, I’m an avid sock knitter. I seem to be addicted to it. So far I have about 70 pair of hand knit socks in my drawer. I tried to knit one top down when I first started knitting and it was so difficult I never did the second one. I didn’t understand at that point that I needed to slip the first stitch on the heal flap and the Kitchener was just too hard. So I knitted toe up from then on. But I really liked the top down construction and eventually came back to it. Now I can knit them with my eyes closed. One thing that really helped me to get the exact fit was buying a sock ruler. I’m able to measure exactly the length of leg and foot. And the other thing that really helped me was this video I came across called How to Kitchener toe without Ears by Suzanne Bryan. I kept getting confused about what I was supposed to be doing when until I came across her video. All of a sudden I could do it and it looked nice! I did need to continue to watch her video but eventually was able to do it without the video. As soon as I’m about to start the stitch the mantra goes off in my head knit, pearl, pearl, knit…. The stitch that was so difficult for me suddenly became a breeze and the way she did it, you don’t have these funny ears on each end. I also learned how to weave in my ends in this video and I’ve done it this way every since! She’s a great teacher.

      I’ll certainly look for a sock ruler, thank you so much for the tip Susan! Suzanne Bryan is probably my favourite for learning knitting skills, she is just absolutely brilliant.

    Hello! 🤗 you are so right, you don’t have to wash hand knit socks as often as normal socks. I do it when they become too loose or dirty. Mine never really smell, which is the beauty of wool! 😍 and you really don’t need to block them on the blockers, you can, but when I do a sock wash (for all 5 of us 😬) I just lay them all out just like that. If I’m going to give some as a gift I usually block them so they can look pretty or if I want to show them in the podcast, but even then…just putting them on the blockers is enough! I’m so glad you are joining us in the sock world. And yes, that is the eye of partridge heel! that’s my favorite!
    The German twisted cast on is a wonderful cast on, but the Italian one works wonderful too!! You are just adorable!!!
    Chiaogoo are the only needles I use! I love them SO much! I have fixed and all the sizes of the interchangeable sets!

    I feel the same way about stress knitting, as what you described. You are not alone. The world has been crazy the last couple of years, and we are all traumatised, it's not your imagination, and it's not silly, it's very real. Glad that (sock) knitting is helping you! It's helping me, too. Also spinning yarn - very therapeutic once you get past the very beginner phase.
    Hey, another sock pattern to try is Andrea Mowry's Everyday Socks. Every pair looks wonderful! I made a pair for my daughter, and she loves how they fit.

    I also will definitely recommend getting the full set, I got the smaller set but ended up spending more by doing that. Then you can buy connectors that fit the large needles so you can use the small cords for both, then you only have to buy the mini cords separately!

    Hi Karoline, I bought my Chiaogoo sets from Wild and Woolly in London. Their online service delivers very quickly in my experience. You will need to buy 3mm tips separately if you use that size but the others are included. I bought the small set in 2020 and the large set in 2022. That way you have two cases with all the specific cords etc separated. They are BRILLIANT you won’t look back!

    Hi! Fab podcast. I get my chiaogoo from the little knitting company and they are great. I bought the whole 5 inch set. But I find I use the smaller ones more. I mainly use the larger ones for hat knitting. But I have been buying 4 inch ones for that just when I need them ( you can knit hats in the round with 4 inch). Also, it’s handy to get some of the cable extenders and the cable adapters. That way you don’t need to buy so many different cables. x

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  2 роки тому

      That’s all brilliant advice. I hadn’t thought about it probably being smart to buy 4 inch tips as I need them to supplement a 5 inch set. I do prefer knitting with slightly longer needles 😊

    I think people (me) need a distraction and also that micro business, which I know you are not but a lot of the yarn community is, need to keep working, need to keep making content or they can't pay their bills and survive.
    with regards to socks, they don't need to be washed-and-stretched-out blocked, no, not even if they're lace. They should be knit with negative ease and wearing them will stretch them out the appropriate amount. They need to be washed-and-let-to-dry blocked (people use "blocked" to mean both things) but I confess I tend to wear them right away and wash them at some vague point in the future. I have sock blockers, but they're just for looking pretty when showing them to other people.
    My experience with socks stretching out after a few wears is that they're not knit at a tight enough gauge. I know some people knit socks with fewer stitches, with more negative ease, so that when they stretch out they still fit, but if you go down half a mm (or more? I don't know what your fabric is like) then they will last longer and not stretch out with wear. Basically, socks should be knit on whatever the smallest needle you can use with that yarn without hurting your hands. I'm generally a loose knitter, I knit fingering/4ply socks on 2.0mm, sport/6-ply on 2.25mm, and DK/8ply socks on 2.5mm. I haven't knit aran socks yet, but I imagine I would start with a 2.75mm. If I hold my finger inside the sock, I don't want to be able to see if from the other side of the fabric, especially not for the foot.
    I hope that helps.

    I bought my Chiaogoos from Purlescence who provide a very quick service. I bought the small set initially and later purchased the large set (they give you the option to upgrade to the full set at a later date without the case). I also have the Hiya Hiya Sharps small set which I love equally as the cords twist. I also have the Lykke wooden set which I love too for projects that require a bit more grip on the needles.

    • @jacquiprocter6042

      @@KarolinesKnits Hi Karoline, thanks for another great podcast… it’s a difficult one really. I’ve been knitting about 5 years and always used my Lykke needles which I loved. I had heard so many good things about the Chiaogoos that I bought some. Despite me thinking that I wouldn’t like metal needles, I found them quicker but probably wouldn’t have liked them when I started knitting as I’d have probably dropped more stitches, but I love the cables.. I received some Hiya Hiya Sharps for Christmas which I expected to be too sharp (I’m a thrower) but they’re perfect. The cables are much thinner but they twist around at the join which is great.. I’d suggest that, as you’ve done with the Chiaogoos, you buy one needle and try it out. I am a bit obsessed with needles so am fortunate to have the shorter and 5inch tip sets. I personally prefer the shorter tips as I feel that I have more control of the needle and also can work on shorter circumferences easier. You can’t go wrong with either sets and can always add to the sets or ask for them as presents as I’ve done. X

    Just so you know, KnitPro / Knitter's Pride (in NA) has a new, memory free, swivel cable in the "Mindful" brand. The cables come separately and cost me about 6 dollars CDN each (very reasonable). Not saying that you may not undo them from the needles when using tiny needles (aka when knitting socks) but it can't hurt to try. I generally untwist small gauge interchangeables too - but not with the new cables, which rival ChiaoGoo interchangeables. They fit all of the interchangeable needles you may already own so it can't hurt to try. I prefer the variety with KP needle tips in all sorts of materials but the cables were ALWAYS inferior, at any size. So I also own pretty well every fixed ChiaoGoo too - which I don't regret. Now, however, I'm getting a lot more use from the zillions of KP tips I've bought over the years. One other thing - I'm in NA so it's Knitter's Pride here. You may wish to double check / confirm that this new cable works with KnitPro. I'm 99 per cent certain that it does.

    I have two Chiagoo sets now - the 5" small (2-8 US sizes) with the red cables, and a set of the shorties (3-8 US). They do make connectors that allow you to use any of their cables with any of the needles, but those need to be purchased separately.
    The shorties have been life-changing and I am saving up to buy the lace set (00-2 US). Not sure how you feel about short needles (they took some getting used to, but now the longer needles feel clunky to me even on a sweater) or 10cm vs 13cm ... but try out each before committing to a full set of one or the other. I tried Chiagoo with fixed on 10cm needles and then got the 13cm set of interchangeables (focusing on the red cables, as the 10cm advertised blue) and it took some getting used to. Might not matter for you since you've tried multiple needles, but worth mentioning just in case.
    The ONLY downside I've noticed is that I got the 13cm set and there's an awkward length between using longer cables with the shorties and the shortest cable with the longer needles that's hard to hit - right around neckline length.

    • @KarolinesKnits
      @KarolinesKnits  2 роки тому

      Thank you so much for the detailed response. I have to be honest and say that true shorties have never really worked well with my knitting style - I think it is a mixture of knitting continental and also using the needle to create tension.
      Now that I have the longer set I am really tempted to buy the ones that can comfortably make 40cm circs, I think they would (also) get a lot of use.

    I bought my Chiaogoo set from Purlescence over Christmas when they were running a small discount! I've also bought cables from craftyrhino48 on etsy (she also has her own website) - she gives you a discount code for your next purchase (10% off for first time purchasers, 15% off for repeat purchasers I think!) so you could give her shop a try and get yourself a discount code in the process! Any money off helps a lot with those prices, but it's totally worth it. I bought the complete set plus the missing sizes (3,7,7.5mm) in the 4 inch tips. I expected to only want to use them on small circular projects like hats, but I don't find them at all uncomfortable to knit with and I'm using them for all my projects now!
