- Truck has substantial rust issues so we decided to see how much boost it'll handle before it goes to the crusher. The turbo is of a mazda cx7. Oil is fed from an inline pump from a remote tank in the bed. Truck seems to be handling boost alright.
I wish I had found this a while back, do you still have this truck? I also have a turbo 3.9 Dakota and it’s really cool seeing other people playing with these trucks!
This truck made its way to heaven after the frame rot got too bad but i have a 96 magnum now that I have some plans for. Also, i've viewed a few of your videos and am very impressed! I'm actually about to put roller rockers on and watched your install video!
@@VWBrianVW I used to have a 96 a few years ago which was my first turbo project. I’ve been really impressed by how tough these engines are. Early dakotas make great street builds
I couldn't agree more. These engines are nearly indestructible.
@@VWBrianVW it would be cool to meet up if the opportunity comes up. I see you are a vw guy too as well. I’ve got an 82 rabbit convertible that I’ve been fixing/modding although it’s in storage right now
I'm down man. I'm in Pennsylvania. You?
Needs a 4" stack ☺️ sounds like it likes the little bit of boost it's getting. 👍
Sounds a lot like a Cummins actually.
Yessss i finnaly found someone who did it rightttt stg im doing this imma find me a u-pull it cx7 turbski and best believe this is happening ive just needed a reason to do a bed stack this is ittt
Does it need an intercooler? Lol and do u think either way i could take one off the same cx7? Id assume ill need custom piping and such but im so set on this my local u pull it has 2 cx7's just need to see if there sport or touring models but 50$ turbo lmao cannot beat that
Babe Cummins sound amazing
Wow lol I have a 87 carbureted 3.9 and I’m about to Jerry rig some shit up like this 😂😂
10/10 recommended. It was a blast
@@VWBrianVW was your throttle body injection? What year was it? People say the pre-magnum 3.9 is shit
@@Blakethegoat yup mine was TBI. it was awful power wise but it was literally indestructible.
@@VWBrianVW did it rip any harder after the turbo
@@Blakethegoat it was too small of a turbo for the engine but it helped a lot down low. It made all it's power at like 3k rpm like a diesel. Lol
Sounds hella mean for a little truck, dude. 👍🏼
Not trying to brag but I'm doing the same thing you did with your 3.9, only I choose to go with the slightly newer 3.7 engine.
Have fun with timing chain issues
this is actually pretty wicked, looking for something cool to do to my dakota, wish i knew how to turbo mine
I just came up with this idea because I didn't feel like making engine bay room or buying/ making manifolds. Here all i did was cut off exhaust and add a 90 into the bed, put turbo on, and used exhaust pipe and a bender as my charge pipe. Then put a remote oil tank and pump in the bed to feed the turbo. That's the clicking the the very beginning of the video.
@@VWBrianVW theft is a bitch tho
sounds like a cummins
I have 93 I wanna turbo is there a way I can message you and learn more on how you did it ?
Sounds like a Cummins
How can I turbo mine can you send me the requirements and all that I want to turbo my 3.9
I'm seriously thinking of doing this to my 99 ram, this sounds ratty, especially for a V6.
Any major drawbacks from this?
How much did this cost you?
And finally, what else would benefit something like this, I'm new to boosting lol
The rattle in the beginning is the remote oil pump in the bed. No drawbacks except that your engine isn't made for boost in stock form and you could damage it. It cost me maybe $100 total to do this and most of that is hardware, pumps, lines, and pipe. Benefits are that you potentially gain power and torque.
@@VWBrianVW Cool man, I might do this, minus the bed mounted exhaust lol. These motors are able to push about 8psi without, well, exploding, is that how much you're pushing with that turbo?
@@Murr1can to be honest, I don't know. I closed the wastegate and let it eat. Lol. Definitely at least 8.
@@VWBrianVW well according to some sources, on average the turbo off of those Mazdas pushes around 15psi, LOL, surprised the motor didnt blow!
@@Murr1can The V6 magnum is incredibly under rated. it can eat 8-10lbs forever on stock internals. Its just a 5.2 with 2 less cylinders and is just as strong. So it handles boost better. Going to fully rebuild mine soon and boost it to 20lbs or more
Can you turbo or supercharge a 2000 ram van 3.9?
You can turbo anything with time and money.
I have a Dakota sport magnum, where can I get the turbos kit??? How much more power?????
I made my own. I can't say how much you'll make too because every setup is different
Put a roll cage in it, take it to a coal mine strip job, and pull some Evil Kenevil debauchery!
What psi you running??
Whatever the turbo allowed. Lol. I had the wastegate closed. Lol
Did you do anything to the motor is it all stock
@@samk3960 engine is completely stock
10psi?
@@joshuajones8077 says 14-15 psi. I think I know what I am doing now. I have a shop that specializes in small blocks near me. Going to rebuild it and boost it to 20PSI. Should be the hottest 95 V6 Dakota around
Did you have it reprogrammed or are you running open loop?
No aftermarket tuning. This year of trucks didn't have a mass air flow sensor so I just added as much fuel as I could manually and gave it all the way. Lol
@@VWBrianVW Bigger Injectors? I dig it! Just what these engines need for the dead space at mid range!
@@RussellBrosGarage actually no bigger injectors. I took the vaccum line off of the fuel pressure regulator and unplugged the coolant temperature sensor to make it run extremely rich. It made lots of fireballs but it ran perfectly.
@@VWBrianVW cool, so it is running open loop with the sensor. Thanks for the info on it!
@@RussellBrosGarage no problem! My advice is go with a bigger turbo than I did. It made good low and mid power but top end still left a lot to be desired
I'm curious how you routed the charge pipe going to the intake? Details?
I wish I could put photo comments. Lol. The piping went under the truck and came up the drivers side in the engine bay and then met up to a custom made intake box with 3 throttle body gaskets stacked to seal well.
VWBrianVW that's jacked 😂Badass I gotta try this with mine it seems pretty simple considering it's all in the bed. Thanks!!
@@mcbeepcheeks it really was.
What did you use for the intake box? Did you weld something together?
@@mcbeepcheeks yeah I custom made an intake box. Dm me on Instagram and I'll send you photos. @vwbrianvw
Any tuning required?
Nope. Too old to do any kind of ecm tuning so I unplugged the temp sensor and unhooked vacuum from the fuel pressure regulator to throw as much fuel as possible.
Is this a manual?
Yeah it was
@@VWBrianVW i have that same one
@@jairocampo103 that's awesome. They're tough trucks. I miss mine
What turbo you useing?
Some mazda turbo I got for free from a friend.
Has this improved gas mileage?
No, in fact it was much worse.
Regular plus prem.?
