The Schnees remind me of something my psychology friend told me. There are four "typical" responses to abuse, and each Schnee exhibits one of them. Weiss is Fight. Actively opposes their abuser and their goals. They resist control being taken from them and act to control their own choices. Winter is Flight. Rather than actively opposing their abuser, Flight victims try and get as far away from their abuser as possible. Winter wants nothing to do with the Schnee name, as opposed to Weiss who wants to restore the family honour. Willow, their mother, is Freeze. She doesn't actively resist her abuser, becoming withdrawn so as to try and not do anything to earn their abusers ire. They often attempt to cope with their situation with substance abuse. Whitley is Fawn. Fawn victims try and avoid harm by acting in ways that they hope will please their abusers.
Oh my god. This is _exactly_ the dynamic with my girlfriend's family! She herself is Fight. ...I feel like I should show her this, the explanation, not this episode. ...Then again, she's done so well to come so far on her own, would she even need something like this?

Yeah, poor kid was abused and moulded to be the perfect kid, never talking back and doing exactly as his father said. I feel bad for him. Yeah, he's kind of a jerk sometimes, but I think it's a coping mechanism because he is jealous of Weiss and Winter, not their powers, their ability to defy their father. He's the youngest and the girls left him alone in the house with their father and their absent mother.
As far as the members of the council go, technically there would be 5. Ironwood has 2 seats as both the leader of the military and the leader of the academy.
God. It always breaks my heart whenever I watch the conversation between Weiss and her mom and hear how heartbreaking it is for Willow (Weiss's mom) to proclaim that her daughter is better off without her family; in contrast, it is caring that Willow also pleads with Weiss to look out for her brother since, despite being a bit of a...well, brat, Whitley is still her family. Kudos to both Kara Eberle (VA for Weiss) and Caitlin Glass (VA for Willow); they both did exceptionally well this episode.
@@Trichromanic Ah. Thank you for the correction. I'm not quite sure how exactly I missed that; I must have been looking at the wrong voice actor source.
@LukeSSS No arguments there. I firmly believe Willow's apathy and obsessive drinking is equally harmful as Jaques's crude behaviour to his children and cruel decision of placing the importance of his company over his children; it's evident that the Scenes siblings needed a proper guiding figure since childhood and, unfortunately, the Schnees parents weren't able to provide this. Still, the silver lining is that hopefully Willow does attempt to change in future volumes; at the very least, she'll break out of that apathy and help Whiteley break out from his... bratty/obnoxious behaviour.
@LukeSSS Not at all. There's a massive difference between being defeated and a victim as opposed to actual malice and abuse. She's not gonna win any mom of the year awards, but she doesn't compare to Jacques.
@SaviorOfNirn Looking back, I wouldn't say @LukeSSS is completely wrong; it is true that Willow's apathy allowed for Jaques to seize control over the family and order around his kids with malice. However, I do concede that their comment, along with my agreement that Willow is equally bad as Jacques, can be considered an exaggeration; as cpMetis best puts it: She's not gonna win any mom of the year, but she doesn't compare to Jacques.
Don't forget, Weiss said when they went to the mine that the cold of Atlas could easily kill without tech or aura to protect them. Mostly, only warriors have learned to awaken aura, and Wattz just turned off the heat.
It was snowing already, the heating grid made it so the snow turned into rain instead. Once the heating turned off the snow couldn't melt into rain anymore.
You mentioned it was weird that there were only 3 council members but that’s part of what they’re addressing which is the fact that Ironwood is on the council has 2 council seats. Apparently the general of the armed forces and the huntsman academy headmaster each get a seat which Ironwood is both. So all Ironwood needs is one member to vote with him and he can do whatever he wants.
Very astute Rick, there are *five* people on the council, but Ironwood holds *two* of the seats by default because he's the Headmaster of Atlas' huntsman academy *and* the Army's head honcho.
I think what Weiss's Mother was trying to say when telling her to look after Whittley was that after he was left alone, without his two older sisters was taken under his father's wing and with his mother not emotionally present with her drinking. Both Winter and Weiss were defiant, with both them gone. Whittley was probably moulded into the child Jacque wanted, one that didn't argue, Whittley did say, "It's foolish to not do as father says." He was probably beaten, or mentally manipulated to the point where he doesn't want to be like his sisters. He's not jealous of their powers, he's jealous that they had the courage to stand up to their father. I feel bad for him, and I actually hope for a redemption ark for him, not like he really needs one, he hasn't done anything to really hate him for, he's just kind of a jerk sometimes.
