What I like the most is the unapologetic way Piquet says that from 1988 he drove just for money. He says he knew his competitive driving days were over and therefore he would drive to whoever paid him more, regardless of how (un)competitive the car would be.
Was reminiscing about that with a fellow fan at music festival last summer (we both happened to be wearing blue Nacional Senna hats). Still love watching Piquet highlights).
Piquet said in an interview that he was once asked by a journalist: "Nelson, be honest with me, who was better, you or Senna?" and Nelson replied: "Well I'm alive." 💀
It was more like: "i would never risk my life like he did with that horrible unbalanced williams to try to win a championship". Thats what i could get from that interview in the whole context.
Here in Brazil he's kind of underrated because of his rivalry with Senna. At the the time, the local f1 media would belittle him, since Senna was their golden boy. He also had some disagreements with a local comentator, and that also helped a lot to tarnish his image. But In the end he always showed to be a guy that didn't cared to all that fame stuff, all he wanted was to compete on high level and win championships... It remembers me another great driver from recent years...
Piquet is forgotten also because of the influential British F1 media. They have hated him since his years of rivalry with Mansell and have always done everything to downplay his achievements.
Probably yes, British media is very strong in the F1 world. Anyway, for me, Piquet is a Top 10 historical driver because he won 3 championship against drivers like Senna, Mansell, Prost, De Cesaris, Lauda, Rosberg, Jones or Andretti among other good drivers. The great rivals of his time makes him the hreat champion he is. Then, yes, the declaration are always very conflicting but... he is a real champion who won with 3 different engines like Ford, BMW and Honda and different eras.
@@comic.sans24 Typically British, the arrogance of ignorance, the sense of entitlement has remained after the British Empire and the people who are not only notoriously monolingual but don't seem to understand the concept of foreign languages at all were suddenly experts on the meaning of words in Brazilian Portuguese and were sure it was exactly the, exclusively Anglo-Saxon concept of an N-word. After producing 162 white privileged F1 drivers the fact that privileged F1 driver no. 163 was black gave them the right to call anyone that doesn't agree the spoiled English brat in the most supreme car for by far the longest time in the history of F1 is the greatest racist. Of course all Dutch fans but also the whole Verstappen family including Jos Verstappen with his black ex-girlfriend. A 3 times world champion is also in the way of their narrative that Schumacher never beat any good teammates let alone WDC's, while the great Hamilton has beaten a WDC like Rosberg.
@@comic.sans24 yeah, that for me was the golden era exactly because of the amount of legends on the grid at the same time, anyone who could win a WDC on that era could also win several in a row in the right situation (like Schumi, Hamilton and Max).
Mansell was slower than De Angelis five years in a row at Lotus. Keke Rosberg made him look like an amateur in Williams 1985, Prost made him look like an amateur at Ferrari 1990 and Mansell even lost the championship in the fastest car in 1987 against injured Piquet. Mansell virtually self-destructed. Mansell's other teammates were Andretti, Hakkinen and Hill who all outperformed him. The only teammate he actually ever beat was Riccardo Patrese. Against Berger it was pretty even. I loved Mansell. Great entertaining driver but he's not as good as people think he was. Always the best car, always losing against his teammates because of his silly mistakes and crashes. It's the UK F1 media who made him a hero. If he came from any other country, losing 6 years in a row against the teammate (De Angelis, Rosberg) you'd never get a spot in the top F1 team like he did in 1986.
@@detonator2112 Exactly. He only got that place at Williams in 1985 because of his sponsor, British Tobacco. This same sponsor kept him at Lotus in 1984, when Peter Warr wanted to fire him to make room for Senna already in 1984. Lotus was a classical British team and the British sponsor thought a British driver would be the best choice commercially speaking.
I saw an interview done in probably the last ten years with him & Mansell & the interviewer asks if he was bothered by not being as loved by fans as Mansell was, to which he replied "I don't give a shit for that, I'll take the three world championships"
He's also an asshole which makes the public not like him either. He was and still is just an extremely unlikeable person, the fact no one ever talk about him and only mention him in statistics is a testament of that.
Not even Niki Lauda nor Ayrton Senna would tolerate his behavior even if they were still alive, but in the other world they're definitely like: "Are we a joke to you?" Nelson Piquet: "Yes!" Niki Lauda and Ayrton Senna: "Oh, my god." 🤦
Nelson is an all time greatest fought and beat legends like: keke Rosberg, Alan jones, Carlos reuteman, Alain Prost, Rene Arnoux, ayrton senna, Niki Laura
The only driver who passed Ayrton Senna from the outside and counter steering at the same time with a 1000hp turbo engine behind his back! Hungary GP 1986.
I met him once when the pits were open to the press on the thursday unpacking day at the track, he was nice to me. He went on to win the championship that year.
Nelson was always a self righteous fancy pants. He was almost miraculously "colorful". For instance drawing rude and even naughty cartoons about everyone around,. (Fortunately he was quite artistically adept as well. ) Piquet was a superb master of gamesmanship, always keeping his competitors off keel as much as possible. He and Mansell were fierce competitors and made for some extremely fun spectating, both being the kind of bloke who could pull an impossible move out of their bag of tricks without warning! Epic racing! Thanks, Dan, for being a beacon into times that are shrouded behind veils of pompous propriety!
Of course, it was always so strange to me that despite off track behaviour it felt mainstream F1 had forgotten Piquet and even if his character wasn’t the best his racing was an integral part of F1 history!
In my opinion Nelson is an underrated legend. He was the real deal, fast, ruthless, aggressive, and had a rockstar attitude. People hate him because he's honest, because his supermodel daughter is dating Max Verstappen, or god knows what, they just want something to dump on him. It doesn't make sense really.

@@SaintKimbo oh no i don't mean him in the 80s and 90s, i mean him in this last few years, times change and you need to adapt. Don't get me wrong, Piquet is one of my favourite drivers, he's just a bit outdated nowadays
@@SaintKimbo exactly. You are spot on with that being British thing. James Hunt is absolutely revered for his "cool" antics of simply stating his mind yet people forget he was a total drunk, a man wh*** and alcoholic. Not rly an example of a civilised man. On top of that people forget he literally knocked out a track marshall that was trying to help him. When he was commentating on races later in his career he used to show up to work half drunk and comment on races in a pissed state. He had a particular hatred for French drivers for some reason and would generalize alot not the driver but alot of the times the whole nation saying stuff like "typical french" calling drivers "frogs", idio** and saying they are not worthy of being on the track which despite him being allowed to his opinion wasn't rly proffesional stating it on a live broadcast in front of millions without that driver having his word to defend himself. But since hes a brit he gets a pass and is revered for being cool. German, Brazilian or a french person etc. In F1 community saying stuff like that would get banned for commenting or stating his opinion like that. I mean just look at it they banned a literal 3 time world champion, a legend of our sport because of stating his opinion INDIRECTLY because they didn't agree with him. Damon Hill is a proper example of this today. Just look at all the vile stuff he said about Max being unworthy sometimes coming across completely bitter and oblivious and yet he still has a job. I guess British think they secretly own the sport and are able to say whatever they like because of it. They seem to think their word is more valuable than the others just look at the Sky propaganda. This is why enjoy when a non british driver is winning no yapping from them or rubbing it onto our noses how hes this and that...

@@SaintKimbo Brazilian here. Alan Jones crashed on Piquet at the first turn at Monstreal/80 and brazilian media never created a hateful image of Jones. @@SaintKimbo Alan Jones was a great character, I'll never forget what he called Schumacher went commenting for the BBC's coverage of the Grand Prix at Adelaide. I saw it live, it didn't make the highlights. He also laughed when David Coulthard crashed into the pit wall at the same race. Very good and knowledgeable commentator too, very much like James Hunt in being both outspoken but genuinely good at commentary.
Piquet's strongest attributes included his exceptional speed and consistency. He had a deep understanding of mechanics and excelled in tactics and strategy (very important drivers attributes on those days). His creativity greatly benefited the team, and he had the strongest mentality in Formula 1. When he judged that the Williams team was favouring Mansell, he started carrying a radio tuned to Mansell's communications and refused to share his setup configurations. There are numerous intriguing stories about Piquet, both good and bad.
Not true. Frank Dernie has confirmed that Nelson & his mechanics NEVER hid anything from Mansell & his mechanics. This all comes from Hungary 1986 when Nelson found that a different differential gave him an advantage. The information wasn't hidden but Mansell and his mechanics failed to spot it. The "hidden configuration" story was their attempt to cover up their own ineptitude.
@@angelracing F1 has always been about the car. There has nearly always been a car that was streets ahead such as Lotus in the 60s and 70s, Mclaren in the 80s, Williams in the 90s which even Hill and Villeneuve could win championships in. Ferrari in the 2000s and red bull/mercedes in the 2010s. F1 has never really been a sport, its a technology based business model.
@@uv77mc85 Simply not true. Best example is Frentzen. You can get a seat in the best car, but still have to deliver. Hill and Villeneuve were both really good drivers and definitely championship material. Hill didn't have the talent of Schumacher, but also didn't have to hide from no other driver of this era. Villeneuve was young, fast and crazy when he arrived in F1 as reigning Indy Champ. He lost it later due to various reasons.
You missed the part in which he did the most spectacular passing in F1. And it was done on Ayrton Senna. You also missed that he had an horrific accident preparing for the Indy 500.
Piquet was and is a good bloke. He may get hundreds of parking tickets and talk shit but when Frank Williams crashed his car he was the one with the mobile phone to call the ambulance and who was there at every step of his recovery. He also disliked Senna which, in my mind, makes him a good judge of character.
An absolute legend and he's one of the best technical driver along stewart, lauda, prost. And one thing people dont realize is, his legacy in F1 is absolutely enormous.
Piquet was the villain, the neccesary villain in F1. He is like Prost. If Senna was Batman, Piquet was the Joker. And I love him the way he is as a person and as a driver. For ph*c1n6 sake, the man survived Tamburello and was 3 times World Champion and not always with the best car.
He sacrifice the 82 championship to develop that bmw engine, not even Bernie, or even the Bmw board believe that engine could win a title. Patrese (his team mate) was just surfing safely in the ford cosworth in 82 and took the developed ready engine in 83 without taking any risk for his position in f1 as Piquet did. Later bmw failed with kubica for the same reason as in 82, lack of self confidence to try for a title.
I get where you are coming from But between Senna Prost it still boggles my goddamn mind how Prost became the villain. Well, he was french... but still.

Speaking of Emerson Fittipaldi he is one of only four drivers - Graham Hill, Jody Scheckter and Keke Rosberg are the others - who didn't get a Fastest Lap for the entire season they were champions (In Graham's case he only did this for one of his title winning seasons, Emerson did it for both of his)
It's unfortunate that here in Brasil people can't enjoy things without picking a side. On basically everything you are facing an "either or" stand point. From politics, soccer players to F1 race drivers you must state your position an expect to be criticize by it. I grew up watching F1 and cheer for both of them (Piquet and Senna). I watched all 3 titles of Piquet and also Senna's. Piquet was a "cerebral" driver that used every inch of the rule to his advantage, much like Prost was. Exceptional driver with tons of knowledge of the machine he was driving. But not a risk taker. Senna, on the other hand, was also an exceptional driver but more of an "all in" kind guy, which made him an even greater spectacle for Brazilians. With him on the track people expected more than a race, we anticipated a show, moreover if it was raining (like Monaco in 84 and Silverstone 93). Until today we have in Brazil the Piquet fans (who dislikes Senna) and Senna fans (who dislikes Piquet). Even if I prefer the Senna type of gritty driving, it doesn't erase what Piquet was able to do when he was the champ on a far more competitive F1 years.
Nelson is a great character who wasn't and isn't afraid to go against the flow. He didn't take well how Brazilian media basically dumped him when Senna (another rich boy, but much better at pandering to the the journalists and the fans) established himself as a GP winner. His later PR blunders are just the icing on the cake and got him canceled by the usual media who much prefer duller and/or insincere drivers. Piquet disparaged two of the press' biggest heroes in Senna and Hamilton, in addition of being Verstappen's FIL and the father of the driver who was instrumental in one of F1's worst scandals. No wonder he's been un-personed...

Exactly, Piquet, was cast as the 'Bad Guy' by the press, during his career, but if you listen to his interviews, he is hilarious, and loves to shit stir.
My F1 idol, he tells a story of having the comunications of Mansell with his box on his channel so when Mansell decided to go into the pits Piquet went before, making Mansell stay out one more lap. Legend! When drivers were gentleman and anything but hitting another car was allowed. Senna started this movement of hitting cars in my view, kinda don't like the guy
About Piquet, he is a great driver for many Brazilians, the guy who continued the legacy of Emerson Fittipaldi and many other drivers like Tony Kannan and Rubens Barrichello had some kind of Inspiration from him, he always made inappropriate comments perhaps even during the 90s probably because of his decline after the accident (this is really a very sad thing)But now I see that it's more because he feels like he's in the media again, which is very strange because his sons are very prestigious pilots, he also didn't have the need to do These types of retarded comments that he made some time ago managed to destroy the relationship that his fans had with him and the relationship of all that flow of F1 people who considered him A great champion
Well, I was a fan back in the day (and admittedly still am), though I'll acknowledge Piquet was and still is abrasive and controversial off track. Though I personally feel the response to his comment about Hamilton was a massive over-reaction, but that seems to be the stock response to offense these days... Yet on track he was a good, clean racer, mighty quick when in the mood, and went wheel to wheel with several of the sports greats - often besting them. And more of a big picture kind of guy than most others, in the sense that his eyes were always on what was needed to win the championship even if it meant not winning at all costs in any given race. Then there was his overtake of Senna at the Hungaroring in 86, which must surely rank among the greatest in F1 history - that was an absolute screamer! In hindsight he ought to have retired at the end of 87, having won the championship despite the after-effects of his Imola shunt. His remaining years in F1 did little more than diminish his prior achievements.
This guy, to this day he can make me emotional, in my room I have two posters: Nelson Piquet and Lamborghini Countach. No driver has as many backstories as he does: the driver engineer, pitstop, tire warm-up, until his accident, he raced without using track references, relying only on his spatial sense.
The man. The mechanic, a superb one. The driver, skilled to the bone. A racer, quarter mile racer, since the very beginning long avenues if what is Brasília, capital of Brazil. Father of seven - a busy guy. A reckless spirit. Someone who dares to say what he thinks. Definitely NOT a woke person, as most in the sport - and all of it - nowadays. A true Brazilian legend.
Back in 1983 motor journalists referred to him as the man with the hooked nose and the eagle eyes. He was an even more terrifying opponent than Senna would later prove to his competitors.
Actually Piquet is a very humble man. If he see that you like old overpowered machines, he treats you well. If he see that you just want to take a selfie to post on instagram, he shows you his middle finger.
I,ve seen Nelson talking for all my life: he is a prick. But in fact, he is a genius. He invented he electric blankets for the tires (he realized that he needed his tires warm, went to this motorhome and used his.) The invented weight reduction by cutting all the excessive screws (he spent a whole weekend doing this: he was a mechanic). He did the most spectacular overtake in F1 history, and he did over Senna!
we never really heard about him from the 1987 when the british press hated him for beating mansell. trust me, it isn't just recent. pick up any book in english and they all rate mansell better than nelson, because mansell sold books in england. nelson just beat mansell pretty much everywhere an interesting thing when regarding his tennis days, is his helmet design is a stylelised tennis ball and in 1981, the 6cm rule only applied when the car was stationary. every single f1 car went down to either touch or nearly touch the ground when moving due to the downforce. gordon murray from brabham merely found a way to stop it coming back up, until the driver hit a switch, which meant the car had consistent downforce from staying at a constant ride hide. all of the other teams made their own system after it was used after 2 races, so the advantage didn't last long. the main difference in the 1981 rules compared to 1980 was that sliding skirts were banned. the sliding skirt was made to touch the ground, but when the ground level rose, the skirt could then slide up and still touch the ground without actually damaging it and then sliding back down to the track when the road surface dipped again. hence, it would slide to whatever height necessary to form a seal with the track. obviously, if they weren't sliding, but still touching the ground, then they would break much more easily when going over a curb or the like and the car would be out of the race
People who doesn't like Piquet can't deal with raw truth and people who can't be controlled by any means. Big Nelson is a Indomitable genious with a unorthodox sense of humour (Rio de Janeiro Old Style) and should be praised by his deeds and achievements. Two times WDC without the dominant car and the third title against the other integrants of 80's Fab Four, against his own team and against himself after Tamburello when he lost his deph perception. Also the only one who won a WDC with BMW. Curiously, Lauda and Piquet had similar personal paths about family, accidents, personality traits and inclinations. No wonder they were close friends.
Regarding the word he mentioned about LH, it's not slang and even less something racist! They said that he is this because the socialists in Brazil don't like him, precisely because he does not support the president Thief Lula da Silva! And as nowadays everything is related to politics, the emotional ones wanted to cancel him!"
You can still say what you think these days. Even in F1. It's just that unlike back then, people are more likely to call you out on it and you're more likely to face consequences for what you say. That's it.
The GOAT... won two championships without having the best car on the grid (one of those times his team got second an in the other third)... only Keke Rosberg and Proust had won without the best car, and only once each. As already said here, I believe part of his shunning is due to the bias of British media, and most of what we see about F1 is through their lens. In Brazil Piquet was shunned as well for many reasons: he was always bitter with the fact he didn't get the attention he thought he deserved from local media because he was not from São Paulo, his sharp comments weren't helpful either and finally, he ended up with a poor relation with the much more media-friendly Senna. The irony is that he has much more respect from the Italian media, despite the rumors he once called Enzo Ferrari an "old ill guy" and dodged any chance he had to drive for them. And in the last years his allegiance to Bolsonaro also tarnished his image even more for some.
Good video! As a great fan of the driver (yep, the driver) Nelson Piquet back in the 80s, i'd like to add some things: 1 - In general, all F1 champions are big jerks, and Piquet is no exception. But, for example, Mansell was a major jerk (arrogant, narcissist, with a massive ego. By the way, most of Mansell team mates didn't like him at all. Andretti, at Indy, told that Mansell was his worst team mate ever, as a person). 2- Being a jerk, Piquet had a fair amount of friends in F1 - he and Lauda were great friends right until Lauda's death; he was a great friend of Alesi and helped him in negotiating the Ferrari contract; he was also a good friend of Elio de Angelis (just read some interviews with de Angelis and he only has nice things to say about Piquet). He was also friendly with de Cesaris, Giacomelli, Boutsen, Moreno and Nannini, for instance. 3- Contrary to Mansell, Piquet had cordial relationship with his team mates (except Mansell, of course). Just read interviews, and they having nothing bad to say about him. 4- He also had great relationship with the team mechanics (especially at Brabham) and the engineers (for instance, he and Gordon Murray were great mates). 5- Even with some press (namely, the italian press), he had a good relationship. Just check this video when he talks to italian press, sending best regards to Nannini, who just had a major helicopter accident - ua-cam.com/video/EEaJa_ci0iY/v-deo.html 6- Actually, most of the hatred he gets is from the british press. And, like i said - yes, he wasn't nice to Mansell, but Mansell wasn't nice to anybody and always acts like the victim. 7- Yes, he said nasty and stupid things to Senna, but they had a "history" of problems. For instance, he told those things after Senna provoked him in the press, saying nobody liked Piquet in Brazil. That was right after the 1987 title. Piquet reacted in that childish manner. 8- Piquet was usually very correct inside the tracks and wasn't involved in problematic accidents, contrary to Senna, Prost and Mansell. 9- Nothing to say about the Hamilton stuff, Piquet was obviously a jerk. 10 - So, usually things aren't as simple as we pretend them to be. Piquet was always a problematic character, but he was also very loved and respected back in the day.
Controversial take... for as toxic as he is as a person, I think in his day he was better than Senna. His raw skill across several very different eras of F1 was unmatched.

Everything in this video is right... Until the last event about Hamilton. The word used by him is not necessarily pejorative in Brazil, and it was not his intention... But you can mention he was convicted to pay a huge amount of money because of that. Summarizing what really happened: Piquet support the previous president of Brazil, and the authorities in Brazil is against the previous president. It is the ugly true. Piquet have a lot of defects, he did a lot of things questionable. But regarding Hamilton he didn't.
He didn't make a racial slur. He's simply a guy from another era in which some types of slang were never considered offensive, but nowadays it is considered by globalism that wants to play everyone against each other.
I would love to hear what he would have said about Hamilton's move to Ferrari. But sadly the diversity-hire media wants to pretend Piquet doesn't exist.
Damn Straigh! Every state and city have different slangs. Rio de Janeiro is not different. Every carioca (Rio de Janeiro City citizen) says "neguinho" for a plethora of situations and for every aspect. There is a positive way, a neutral way and a negative way no matter what colour the motherfucker is. On the interview contest, Hamilton was a prick against Verstappen who would be killed if the f1 cars were not that safe. In other words, Piquet didn't use a racist slur, he subtly said Hamilton is a real cunt.
That shows all the stupidity of this world. Back in the eighties (and even after that) calling someone gay was a common insult, so, that was really nothing that even Senna did worried about. So using it as an argument today is a total nonsense. About what he said about Mansell, it was only the truth. Calling Hamilton "neguinho" is not an insult in Brazil, because that country has always had people from different races, so they have no issues mentioning someone by what differentiates him from someone else. If he had called Hulkenberg or Magnussen blond, no one would have cared about it. This world suffers from an extreme wokeism...
O mundo enlouqueceu

Yes, he referred to Hamilton as "neguinho" which literally translates do "little black boy/man". In Brazil we DO use nego/neguinho regularly as "that person", despite the skin color. But in the context that Piquet was referring to Hamilton as "that neguinho" it obviously had racist connotations. Also, iirc, in that same phrase he implied that Hamilton was gay (that's hard to properly translate what he said, but it would be something like "Hamilton was having his @$$ f*cked")
Comparison tale I noticed watching this. Lauda's third title in 1984, and Piquet's third title in 1987 are very similar on paper. But Piquet's title win gets shat on, I wonder why...
He drove in the Indy 500 two times for Team Menard. On his first attempt in 1992, he should a lot of pace despite not racing on an oval. In practice, he ran over a metallic peace of debris. At turn 4 he crashed when he let go of the gas as his team called him in. He sat out because of severe leg injuries. In 1993, he qualified 13th but did not finish due to an engine failure.
I am Brazilian, a fan of both Senna and piquet, and old enough to have seen both racing. While i agree that Piquet was a prick when racing, and now retired and older is not a lovely person, wich is how his personality made him, i have to say that this wokr culture is even less pleasant, it really is toxic and ridiculous. British have their own biased thinking since the times of piquet vs mansell thing. And banning piquet from paddock is just ridiculous.
Unlike Ayrton, even a messiah of sport and philanthropy was rich, a farmer and well-off. Nelson was a bastard son, he had to borrow cars, race with borrowed money, and he won the world championship even with the worst constructors' prize. unfortunately he wanted to take revenge for the excommunication by the media, and did not forgive the redeemed or the sycophants. the real Darth Vader of Brazilian F1 Limão Nelsao sempre no coração
I'm Portuguese not actually from brazil but what he called halminton was in a way on saying very normal in Brazil for someone who translates that word with Google does not have the same meaning, racists are ppl who point things like this to make drama about it.
It was very common in certain regions of Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s. I grew up using the expression with the meaning of "some guy", but around the 2000s it was taken back by racist people as a way of being racist and claiming misunderstanding. That's when most people stopped using it, including people in cities where the majority of the population is black. Even black people don't refer to each other like that anymore unless they are over 30 and close friends with the receiver. Piquet can claim he is either too old or too stupid, but not that it was harmless. Times have changed and we keep up with it, I haven't used that expression in 20 years for example.
He admited that he used to say those things about other pilots just to mess with their heads. He also had no love for the media and in interviews he would be the polar opposite to Senna. Brazillian announcers hated him. That combined with his "whatever it takes to win" attitude granted him his bad reputation, but he was a genious in his own way. Many of his secrets eventually became F1 standard.

What I like the most is the unapologetic way Piquet says that from 1988 he drove just for money. He says he knew his competitive driving days were over and therefore he would drive to whoever paid him more, regardless of how (un)competitive the car would be.
His pass on Senna at Hungary in 1986 is the stuff of legend.
Was reminiscing about that with a fellow fan at music festival last summer (we both happened to be wearing blue Nacional Senna hats). Still love watching Piquet highlights).
Pass AND the bird! 😅
The icing on the cake was the 🖕 when he was side by side on the corner entry 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Nelson was a legend who won 3 championships in F1's most competitive era. But he doesnt give a shit for the press, which doesn't forgive him for that.
He's also an ass. People usually don't like that.
Not even Niki Lauda nor Ayrton Senna would tolerate his behavior even if they were still alive, but in the other world they're definitely like: "Are we a joke to you?"

He gave Senna the finger as he passed him…. He is a legend.
As a Senna fan I definitely have to acknowledge that takeover - one of if not the best in F1
One of my favorite quotes is when he saw mansell break down in Canada 91 giving him his last win he said he almost came
That one was crazy 🤣🤣🤣
I met him once when the pits were open to the press on the thursday unpacking day at the track, he was nice to me. He went on to win the championship that year.
Which year was it? He has 3 titles.

Damon Hill is a proper example of this today. Just look at all the vile stuff he said about Max being unworthy sometimes coming across completely bitter and oblivious and yet he still has a job.

His 1990 season gets underrated though. He was still a fantastic driver if given a reliable car

we never really heard about him from the 1987 when the british press hated him for beating mansell. trust me, it isn't just recent. pick up any book in english and they all rate mansell better than nelson, because mansell sold books in england. nelson just beat mansell pretty much everywhere
an interesting thing when regarding his tennis days, is his helmet design is a stylelised tennis ball
and in 1981, the 6cm rule only applied when the car was stationary. every single f1 car went down to either touch or nearly touch the ground when moving due to the downforce. gordon murray from brabham merely found a way to stop it coming back up, until the driver hit a switch, which meant the car had consistent downforce from staying at a constant ride hide. all of the other teams made their own system after it was used after 2 races, so the advantage didn't last long. the main difference in the 1981 rules compared to 1980 was that sliding skirts were banned. the sliding skirt was made to touch the ground, but when the ground level rose, the skirt could then slide up and still touch the ground without actually damaging it and then sliding back down to the track when the road surface dipped again. hence, it would slide to whatever height necessary to form a seal with the track. obviously, if they weren't sliding, but still touching the ground, then they would break much more easily when going over a curb or the like and the car would be out of the race

It's just that unlike back then, people are more likely to call you out on it and you're more likely to face consequences for what you say. That's it.
Nah, the whole existence of Kimi Raikkonen proves otherwise. He continues to be the coolest dude ever in F1
Glad to see your channel growing. You always make things interesting. Look forward to seeing you grow to be one of the biggest channels. Well done
The GOAT... won two championships without having the best car on the grid (one of those times his team got second an in the other third)... only Keke Rosberg and Proust had won without the best car, and only once each.
He suffers because always fought the big media and nowadays do the same against wokeness. A hero to be remembered when the actual dark age ends
I am a fan of both Prost and Piquet but Nelson had the better car in 1983. He even admitted so himself when he acknowledged that Renault rather than Prost had let the championship slip.
@@jameshogan6142 Brabham car was better in last three or four races. Up to that point I felt Renault a better car . Prost was in France on pole by abotu 2 scs . That is a great car , and more reliable than Brabham . Contrary to the myth
@@jameshogan6142 Brabham had power and good aero but had to be driven conservatively because the engine was so fragile because of too much power. Just look at how much engine failures Patrese had. Nelson achieved a great feat that year.
@@jameshogan6142 Ferrari was the faster car that season 100%. And I think the Renault was just a bit faster than brabham all season except the last four races
Now imagine a kid having Piquet and Jos Verstappen as grandfathers. What a mess.
5:30 "Piquet was much faster than Mansell" - Frank Dernie, 1987 Williams chief engineer.
Good video! As a great fan of the driver (yep, the driver) Nelson Piquet back in the 80s, i'd like to add some things:
1 - In general, all F1 champions are big jerks, and Piquet is no exception.
Just check this video when he talks to italian press, sending best regards to Nannini, who just had a major helicopter accident - ua-cam.com/video/EEaJa_ci0iY/v-deo.html
6- Actually, most of the hatred he gets is from the british press.
Piquet was always a problematic character, but he was also very loved and respected back in the day.
great summary of events, two sides to every story and of course nothing is ever as black and white as it seems.
Thanks for the insight!
Nelson Never has that PR apparatus all over him.
Nelson Piquet is my hero 🏆🏆🏆
Controversial take... for as toxic as he is as a person, I think in his day he was better than Senna. His raw skill across several very different eras of F1 was unmatched.

He had the balls to say that senna and hamilton are gay respect.
😂 that’s one way of putting it I suppose
@@DanNoSkill Maybe he meant gay like the old word for happy. What if he´s just an old soul?

Piquet never said anything racist about Lewis and I have lost much of the enormous respect I had for you, when you repeated this blatant lie here.
When will the English-speaking people learn that they are not the owners of the truth?
We, Portuguese, have repeatedly tried to teach FIA the real meaning of Piquet's words, but without success, the self-entitled have decided that they know the meaning of Portuguese words better than us, Portuguese.
A pathetic, and xenophobic, attitude from saints made of rotten wood.
Fr
@@williamdalgren7240No, definitely not 😂
Since we do have many words to describe "happy" in Portuguese. When a Brazilian says "gay" in English it's the current meaning of the word.
Great video well done
Imagine F1 banning, cancelling and ignoring someone like Piquet for speaking his mind and snowflakes being offended by it. That's the disgustingly ridiculous woke world we live in... YUCK!!!
Yeah, if I want to be a racist, vulgar asshole...I should be able to do so without people calling me out. (Who's the GD snowflake with that logic?)
And he was recently aquited in court after appeal . To mention
That's 100% true. Congrats. It was politics.
F1: The Fugly Years
He didn't make a racial slur.
Tamburello also destroyd Berger to be honest.
1989.
Yes he was faster than Mansell and Alboreto up to that point
You forgot to say that he's max's father in law
Max isn't married to his daughter. He may do in the future, it's their choice, but you're jumping the gun.
nowadays this is impossible, a driver who made it on His own to get a place in Formula1 without support, can You tell me about anyone else who did this?
Maybe I'm just weird, but I hear about Piquet quite a bit. We in the F1 historian community still talk about him. Great driver, could be funny, but can also be a dick.
Great video as always
I'm sorry, but Parmalat is a worse sponsor than Visa Cash App 😅

Piquet's shit talking is very entertaining.
I've heard about that racial slur story wasn't it just him saying black but in Portuguese?
notice how he didn't use whitey to refer to the rest of drivers and just blacky for him. It's not that the wors is a slur, it's the way of saying it
@@pisderata idk I've heard he was like being interviewed in his natal language and he said black in Portuguese i might be wrong it's only stuff I've heard so I'm not sure
@@pisderata
The very racist English-speaking world decided to teach us, Portuguese, the meaning of our own words and blatantly lied about what Piquet said.
So, the racists banned Piquet from the F1 paddock to hide their own racism, that's what really happened.
You know, the guys for whom only black lives matter and everyone else can go to hell.
Also, iirc, in that same phrase he implied that Hamilton was gay
(that's hard to properly translate what he said, but it would be something like "Hamilton was having his @$$ f*cked")
As a brazilian myself, I can say that he word he used is commonly used here in a non-racist tone, but the way he said it is very clearly racist.

@@RadeticDanielExcellent! 👏👏👏
So he was banned TWO years ago from the paddock, so that's why no one "hears" of him? Loll anyone truly into F1 knows about this guy cmon
He also called Enzo Ferrari a senile old man that should be in a home.
Don't matter, Don Enzo wasn't british
