    I had a total laparoscopic hysterectomy 16 weeks ago .I was in outpatient but had to stay overnight and was released that pm . I still don’t understand how nurse’s work! I was told every shift I’m your nurse then they disappeared and others would come to check IV, draw blood . No one told me what to do or what medication I was on , I had those compression things on my legs to prevent blood clots and was hooked to an IV pole so I had to ask for help to go to the bathroom . I also asked to go on a walk , it seemed like I was supposed to be in charge 🤷🏻 I was ever so glad to be left out of that prison , meals were not good and sometimes late , they said they were short of help in the cafeteria. It was my first hospital experience in my sixty years so maybe I was just to ignorant to know how to communicate. Needless to say I’ll be glad to avoid hospitals if I can help it !

    Thank you for sharing your experience. I am getting surgery soon too and am terrified of the anesthesia. Can you maybe explain what you remember about that part? Were you still awake in the surgery room up until the moment they administered the anesthesia? Can you describe what it felt like, if you can remember? Thanks so much in advance and all the best to you as you recover!

    • @nathanandtiffany
      @nathanandtiffany  2 роки тому +5

      I can definitely describe it. Because I’ve anesthesia before for a tonsillectomy as an adult as well as an ACL reconstruction of my knee. Sometimes they will give you Versed before in order to relax you. I elected not to have it for this because I wasn’t nervous but if you’ are you may choose to do that. Then I went in the surgical suite where I had Propofol through my IV, You’ll feel a slightly warm sensation through your hand and then it’s like someone draws a curtain over you. You’re out before you even know it. When you wake up you’re kind of groggy and it’s a little strange but it’s not a scary experience. I was very lucky all of the medical staff was amazing as well. So hopefully you have that same experience.

      A long time ago a close relative of mine died under anesthesia. He and his brother were both young and very fit, athletic in fact. But, he died under anesthesa, which was not just sad, but proved devastating to my family. So, you can perhaps, understand, that I too was very leary about the idea of having a General Anesthetic for the first time in my life at the age if 73, for a D&C, hysterscopy and biopsy. To put it mildly I was terrified. My Anesthetist was a very funny guy, aware of my family history and decided to use pediatric medicines for me. My hysterectomy will be in less than two weeks from today. After my first General Anesthetic experience I can safely say, it was nothing to worry about, and now that I know what to expect, I will just relax next time, and imagine a beautiful place. For me, that was daffodils dancing in the breeze among silver birch trees, a bit like Wordsworth's poem, and with that I drifted off, only to wake up in the Recovery Room. I really needed someone to tell me what it would be like, but nobody ever did. So I can very much understand your fear, but you will be fine. I read a couple of books on mindfulness and living in the moment, which were very helpful. I have also read a book called, 'Radical Remission, ' by Kelly Turner, PhD. , because I have Endometrial Cancer, which my mother and her sister both survived fifty years ago, both lived well into their eighties. The book tells about the nine things people did to bring about their remissions. I am incorporating several of those suggestions into my own life. I focus on today, and plan for the future, which I am confident will be bright. I wish you the very best and hope you will take comfort from knowing my experience.

      I’m sorry you’re in pain. Generally speaking the recommendation is off for 6 to 8 weeks. I was off for four weeks. But it’s very individual. You should have that discussion with your surgeon to get a better idea of what is likely best for you given the type of surgery, you’re having, your overall health and wellness, and physical demands of your job.

      @nathanandtiffany  Рік тому +4

      Hi Yolanda, that does sound like a really hard situation. I do have a couple of thoughts. Have you expressed this concern to your surgeon? I would mention it again at the hospital nurse/case manager. Because sometimes you can get someone from home health to come and assist you at least for a little while. It may only be an hour a day but could be helpful. You can also look into a service when you hire someone to come to your house for a couple of hours to make sure that everything is going well. These services are available outside of you insurance as well. If you have a faith, consider reaching out to your church to see if anyone would be willing to assist you. Things you could do personally. Trying to pre-make some simple meals that would be very easy to reheat. Things like soups, mashed potatoes, Jell-O, pudding, or what ever you enjoy etc. I would also consider making up a bed that you don’t have to go up or down stairs. Maybe you have your groceries delivered rather than going to get them in the beginning. In other words before you have your surgery, try and figure out the things that might be difficult and see if you can create a situation that would make them easier or done before surgery date. For me the gas pain resolved in the hospital so I did not have that at home. As far as the pain is concerned, take the medication that was prescribed to you. My prescription was only an over-the-counter, but it seemed to help a lot. However, if you wait until the pain is really bad and don’t take it as prescribed sometimes it is very hard to get ahead of. Also things that help are things like meditation, mindfulness, breathing exercises. Getting up and doing normal things really helpful too. And very small doses. Like taking a shower, walking around your house. In the beginning, nothing strenuous, but it does help to move your body just a little bit.

      @nathanandtiffany  Рік тому +1

      The catheter removal for me was not painful at all! It was a slightly odd sensation, but there was not even one bit of pain. In case you’re unfamiliar with how that works is they insert the tube which is about the size of your urethra and they inflate a balloon inside your bladder to keep it inside. When they remove it they deflate the balloon and just slide it right out.

      @@szee2222 the best thing for me was I asked my doctor what she would do if it was her body. Maybe you could ask your doctor the same question. Because both procedures have their pluses and minuses. The laparoscopic doesn’t have such a large abdominal incision but if you have concerning pathology and you can’t get the uterus out in one piece, that might be a factor. That’s why I chose an abdominal and open procedure.

      You know, I don’t actually know how long it was. Because I was alone in the hospital and I was all drugged up. I didn’t really have anyone to tell me how long it took. So sorry I don’t have a good answer for that.

      My gyn said total procedure will be about 45. But for me to tell my husband it will be all over after about 2 hrs. That includes prep time etc. so he will know how long he will have to wait for me to come out of surgery.

    May I ask why you didn’t want the Versed before surgery?

    • @nathanandtiffany
      @nathanandtiffany  5 місяців тому

      I just didn’t feel that I needed it. I was not nervous and it is used to calm you and make you comfortable. I also had it before my tonsillectomy as an adult and it made my heart rate go very low.

    Did you choose to have an open hysterectomy? I'm having a laparascopic hysterectomy in two weeks and im afraid is gonna end up being an open abdominal hysterectomy.

      I did choose to do that with consultation with my surgeon. I discuss the details of that in one of the other videos.

      @@GK-yz6bc no, I don’t have a cervix. I would actually direct you to working with a pelvic health therapist. That’s not my particular area of specialty. I do however have two people on staff. If that’s some thing that you wanted to talk about you could reach out to my clinic or any clinic near you that has a pelvic health specialist.
