A lot of people give Kenny heck for being nothing like Keith Moon in The Who. He did his best with those songs, and I think he did a great job. Love his playing and great interview.
I love his playing.
Very true, Kenny's a great drummer. I remember when he replaced Keith, Kenny got no love whatsoever. Great Interview from Barry.
Me too, he did a fine job
Not sure if I agree. He did a good job, but he wasn't the right style of the band. Playing with the Faces was better for him. He was great with the Faces and Small Faces.
Kenney played on Tommy soundtrack.
Face Dances and It's Hard were two great albums that got me into The Who when I was 11 and Jones was a big reason why, especially his playing on Another Tricky Day, Athena and Eminence Front.
Thanks for this interview with Kenney Jones. Saw him at Newcastle City Hall with the Who, it was a great gig. Look forward to the Faces box set release in June.
Glad you enjoyed it
I saw The Who In Philly in 1979. And again in JFK and North Jersey in ‘82. Kenny was great.
I'm looking forward to the new Faces album. Great interview, love Kenny Jones.
Ive read tons of interviews with Kenny over the years but this is the first time I’ve heard him speak. Not only does he not get the recognition he deserves, he doesn’t get the speech recognition he needs.
New material from the remaining Faces is big fucking news! I really hope that project gets completed. And of course, can’t wait to listen to the old recordings, too.
Superb interview with a great drummer who doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves.
The Small Faces are one of my all time fave bands, and The Faces never fail to lift your spirits.
Kenny is a real gent and really magnanimous towards Daltrey when he could of easily been dismissive.
Some great tidbits regards The Small Faces , in particular a young David Bowie being close to the group, and also the fact that if they had toured the States they may have continued a bit longer.
Great to hear that there’s some Faces material to look forward to as well.
Thanks again 🤓👍
Great interview Barry!
The Small Faces / Faces were such a
great band. I’m not so sure that they got
a fair shake in North America (Canada…here)
🤘😳🤘
Kenny did a great job with the Who and he deserves more credit.
I was disappointed when I saw The Who live in 1979 with Kenney, but you only need to listen to Rod Stewart's I Know I'm Losing You to hear how good Kenney was!
Great to see Kenney on your channel Barry. The only man to play in three of the greatest bands we've ever produced. I doubt that will ever be repeated. His autobiography was an enjoyable read and I'll definitely be getting hold of the new Faces boxset.
Great interview Barry and nice scoop for you re the Box Set and the New album.
Small Faces have to be one of the best bands to come out of London. Still love them, and Ogden is still one of my favourite albums
Loved Kenney’s playing with The Who, especially live. The 1979 tour was my favorite of all Who tours. I prefer many of the 1979-1982 live versions of songs to the Moon-drummed live versions. Kenney was able to play Music Must Change, but Moon couldn’t.
....kenney jones was a strong and powerful influence from the get go for me....he's a king...
So underrated! How The Faces kept their sh*t together on stage is all down to him.
I thought Kenny did an outstanding job playing drums for The Who. Thank you for sharing this treasured interview with Kenny Jones. 👍👍
I agree
@@classicalbum yep
Great interview. Great Drummer. If anything I think Kenny's drumming gave The Who a much more contemporary feel and sound. By the end Moon's life his drumming and kit were becoming more and more bloated. Would Keith's drumming suited the new direction of Pete's songs during that era? I don't know. Kenny's playing was lean and precise and professional sounding. Much like Pete's songs during those years.
Hats off to you, Kenny. You're brilliant.
Disagree having witnessed both pre and post Moon Who live shows . Jones is ok but the Who were never the same in terms of drive and dynamism and a lesser band without Keith Moon
Smashing interview - what a legend and a great lad! Some very good insights in there, especially if the Small Faces had the opportunity to play in the US they would not have split up. I had the pleasure of seeing Mac at Ashington Folk Club in about 2011, maybe? Excellent interview. Most people aren't aware of how much of an influence The Small Faces were on Led Zeppelin. Pure gold & great work - thank you
I saw The Who with Kenny in September 18, 1979 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. When they played My Generation, Kenny really went for it, and played the end of that song with everything he had, and the crowd really responded and appreciated his effort. There was also this jerk who kept chanting "Keith Moon Keith Moon..." over and over, Pete begged the guy to stop, finally Roger dove into the crowd in the middle of a song and started wailing on this guy, climbed back onstage to finish the number.
I read that in Good Times magazine!!!!! Wow- it was at The Garden? I'm from the area.
Nice interview. Great drummer. I personally love the Kenney Jones era of The Who and his work with The Faces is timeless. 🥁
Couldn't agree more!
Loved watching this - thank you. Kenney is a lovely guy and I'm a big fan of The Small Faces (mainly, of the bands he has been in) and of course The Faces too plus his work on the two Who albums (another massively fave band for me anyway!) Just brilliant - thank you and best wishes to you both!!
Great to see Kenny again .This is with Kennys drumming ,he was let down by crap sound in my opinion ,might have been the time with mics ect but ive always found with The Who he sounded flat which is a bloody shame cause his a fantastic drummer .Love the sound he had at live aid .
Kenney Jones did a brilliant job in The Who. Just hear him performing Wont Get Fooled Again, Dr Jimmy and Magic Bus on "Who s Last" live album or on "Daily Records" , "You" and "Assension Part II". Also his performances when he was on "Small Faces" were the best.
Herr Jones, I met Her McLagan not 6 weeks before he pegged it. Had a lovely natter with the man. What a lovely und sweet chap he was. I was quite honoured.
A couple comments:
- Yes, Robert Plant was a massive Small Faces fan. When you hear Zep's 'A Whole Lotta Love' you are hearing Plant making like he's Steve Marriott singing the Small Faces version of the Willie Dixon - penned 'You Need Lovin''. And Zep even stole the Small Faces' ending for the tune with the 'Way down inside' bit. That tune is on the SF's self-tilted debut album on Decca. The tune 'E to D' on that album also provided the Who with their opening idea (and some chords) for 'I Can See for Miles'.
- The Small Faces started life as an r&b band covering Solomon Burke, Muddy Waters, Brenda Holloway and Booker T & the MG's. The pop aspect was forced up them by management and the record company (Decca), with 'Sha-la-la-la-lee' being the initial offender. The label also released 'My Mind's Eye' without the band's authorisation.
When they signed with Immediate they quit touring and focused on the studio, the idea being to ditch the pop image in an effort to be taken more seriously (IMO they were taken very seriously by their peers). 'Here Come the Nice' was a promising debut. And though 'Lazy Sunday' (with its 'Foxy Lady'-like riff on B-side a nod to Hendrix) was a massive hit - great tune - the band took offence to its release, at least as a single. 'Tin Soldier' more than made up for any past concerns, while final single 'The Universal', essentially Marriott making like a busker with an acoustic guitar in his backyard, was little more than a mis-guided whimper after what went before. Mind, the #1 (UK) album 'Ogden's Nutgone Celebrated Flake' brought everything into focus...though led to Marriott leaving the band because he wanted Peter Frampton in the lineup to augment its sound. When his bandmates rejected the idea, Marriott quit and joined Frampton's new band, Humble Pie.
- Was Kenney the 'right' drummer for the Who? Daltry didn't think so. Townshend liked what he heard. Mind, Townshend later admitted that he disliked Moon's drumming as it put too much pressure on him to hold things together with his guitar. So Kenney's playing made it easier for Townshend, a massive r&b fan, but not for Daltry, possibly because Moon's drumming was a catalyst for Daltry's own dynamics.
I think your last sentence explains it. Roger performed to the energy and unleashed dynamics of Moon's wild drum style. Kenney's more rhythmic approach restricted what Daltrey could do.
Great interview brilliant drummer...kenny has a sublime style with taste and distinction!...top notch!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Kenny! I saw you at ARMS concert Dec 8 1983! What a night. Only 9 US dates.(Jones played on " Tommy" soundtrack LP 1974. He was the ultimate choice in 1978. Loved your book Kenny. How about a comment on BRIAN JONES A Degree of Murder soundtrack??? I own audio with the film actors talking. Those were the days. There are other sessions with Jimmy Page? God Bless You. Saw Rod Stewart in August. He was wearing a FACES shirt designed by Woodys son and commented that Woody, Jones and himself are the only remaining members of the FACES. 22:06
A new Faces box set! 5 Guys and the 2015; LP box are great, the latter on vinyl sounds spectacular!
Great interview
Funny how the answer or blame is the SF image yet with the addition of Rod and Ronnie they evolved the sound. The missing link was that Marriott was looking to get out of the band and work with Frampton who also had a teeny bopper following in the Herd. All it was down to was a complete change for Steve. Weller did it with The Jam as well.
Great player, total powerhouse. Loved the feel of the Who’s music with him. Only thing I could nitpick was the predictable sixteenth note fills from snare down the toms. But he kind of had to do it to give it some connection to Keith.
What a fantastic surprise to see this, Barry. How did you achieve this and how did you feel about the experience?
I'm hoping to get bigger interviews. I was really happy about this as the guy is a legend
@@classicalbum He certainly is. Keith Moon was perfect for The Who, amazing. But he wouldn’t have suited another band. He didn’t have the chops that Kenney has.
Keith Moon actually overdosed on an alcohol substitute drug which is a bit ironic. The modern day equivalent is Librium albeit the same drug essentially.Much as valium is now graded to diazapan and so on and so forth.Librium has to be dispensed under supervision nowadays and cant be prescribed to take at home which is a bit odd because I have a very bad pancreas condition and can take morphine at home at my judgement.
For all those who knocked his drumming with The Who… give a listen to or watch The WHO, Live at Shea Stadium 1982. His playing is superb.
The other three members of The Who were out of gas. The songs weren’t there. Townshend left the band in spirit.
You got it. he did a fantastic job! Even got Tele from Keith's Mom when he started wishing him best of luck
I loved lazy Sunday afternoon the small faces were great I’ve never understood why the faces wouldn’t cover the small faces classics maybe not all but some Tin soldier with rod on vocals would have been fantastic
Great drummer! I laughed out loud from a section of his book. In the early days kids would throw heavy coins at his band...one hit him square in the nuts!!
Did I miss a part one here? This video starts mid interview…?
Keith moon never kept time ..... He was all over the place . Kenney Jones in my estimation is a way better time keeper .
I know he's worried about losing royalties but I think he's done alright and won't struggle to pay the bills
The Faces boxed set will never happen. The compiler is Rob Caiger, the king of CD Vaporware. Caiger is a CD con artist.
Something that is rarely talked about is his drumming on It’s only rock’n roll by the stones. Keith put some Charlie on there but the main feel is Kenny’s. Now like Steve Jordan is making sure it’s there. Charlie never did. It’s huge!
It is spoken about in this interview
I saw the WHO with Kenny back in 83 or so. He sounded great. I didn't expect to see Keith Moon. If he had tried to imitate him THAT would have been cheap and terrible. The two albums he did with the WHO were great.
If you would have asked me a few years ago, I wouldn't have cared for a Faces album. However, in the wake of Hackney Diamonds, I'm in. If the Stones can do it, then so can the Faces. Btw, what would be in the box set? A collection of their albums?
Kenney is such a nice fella and great musician , best wishes to him and I hope we hear more of his beautiful playing 😂😂
Strange thing tough , the man was technicaly a better drummer than Moon the Loon , even Townsend thought Moon did to much , when I listen to Quadrophenia , ( bad production ) do not like the drumming at all , slow the f down , the down point though , Mr Kenny was not the clown in the band , unlucky for him , but his drumming I did prefer over Moon , Keith's drumming was more a reflection of his somewhat grazy mind .
Eminence Front is great
Drummers make the band.
Touring, Recording, gigging, studying,-
Close to the "big time" twice.
I've lived the drums most of my Life.
Fusion to Folk to Rock to Mid Eastern.
So many heroes Ve studied.

KENNEY JONES is as up there with ALL them!
Kenney Jones
A Great band becomes an OK babd😊 with an OK drummer.
Especially in those magic days.
A Great band with a Great drummer becomes
DrummerKenney Jones Woke up this Sunday morning - slight hangover maybe- New Kenney Jones in my feed.
Awesome.🎉
I like Kenney, but being from the USA, I can only understand about half of what he says…
It sounds as if he's not well, and now mumbles a bit... God bless him
Great impersonation of Ozzy...Kenny....
He's getting on a bit, and perhaps not well. I feel privileged to have spoken with him
If he's not well..Then I feel for him...And
You should feel privileged...He was a
Great drummer for Faces....@@classicalbum
That's uncalled for. Kenney's getting on now. It was lovely to see him on Barry's channel.
I did crack up when Barry said you can't beat live dates and Kenney said I don't think you can top Live Aid. Sorry I know the fella is getting on it's no slight toward him and the interview was great. I couldn't help myself 🤣
Good lord. The most mechanical interview on UA-cam.
Marriott, greatest singer we had in that era and i'm a huge fan of Plant, Daltrey and Rodgers. Terry Reid wasn't bad either! Small Faces were wonderful and so influential, dont get half the credit they deserve.
I was at the announced final show in the us...he sounded like shit...so they sounded like shit....period.
I like Kenney, but come on, he had to follow Keith Moon! That's an impossible job! Moon was one of a kind!
Great drummer, just not for The Who
Oh dear Jones sounds awful and just like a punch drunk boxer. I suspect he is not well
Kenny's drum style ,the opposite of Keith moon, was regimented, mechanical, not right for the who.
Zac Starkey ?
Loved the faces didnt like the who or the stones the faces could of stayed together longer if rod hadn't got to big for his boots
