I've always found ancient technologies pretty amazing. Most that you will see are simple to make and use perfect for survival. I remember making many similar devices when we were kids. Thanks for sharing. atb
Have you ever tried to kill something with primitive technology? It's hard, it's frustrating, and you will come home empty handed 97% of the time. They had a bunch of hunters go out only to bring 1 animal back to the village. If you're going to place your faith in a rabbit stick, good luck to you. I'll use snares and traps myself.
Scottie that is a BHK (when it was Blind Horse) Woodsman. I have had it about 3 years. I let a student use it in a class the weekend before this video was made and failed to sharpen it before going out, my mistake as you can tell. It took the initial bark off really well, but not so good after that. I sharpened it after I completed making the video. - Craig
Ones I've taken the time to make have been similar to the Irish shallayle,, my grandad showed me, also the application, in UK, so was rabbits and pheasants, and they made lovely meals,, I use dogs, air rifles, catapult and ferrets now, but still find myself making one when out, the regular places I hunt have a few hanging from a tree branch on the route back to the car,, a couple have blood fur and feather on. An those meals always taste better free, no artificial anything. Happy hunting all.
An old timer once told me that there was once a Boy Scout merit badge called "stalking" one of the requirement was to hunt down an kill a rabbit with such a stick.
Because back when you were kids, you just heard, QUITE THROWING STICKS AT EACH OTHER!!! There is nothing about this stick that is special. It's simply a stick. Now, if you want to carve out a stick that has a 120° bend to it, like a boomerang, and make it more aerodynamic, that could be more effective than a simple stick, but requires way more work.
If you throw it sideways instead of over the top, you will have a lot more success. Also hitting flicks of birds instead of a rabbit brings a higher dinner rate.
I don't think any of these survival instructors have ever killed anything with a rabbit stick... I've never seen one do it and can't find one video where they are successful. You have a better chance at snaring a rabbit than hitting him with a stick. If you're out in the woods all day, throwing sticks at animals, you're wasting time, calories, and your hydration level. The best thing a rabbit stick is good for is when you catch that big fish you don't want to get away or when you snare a rabbit or squirrel and they're not dead. It's a club, that's the only thing it should be used for.
Brother...you do not know how mad I was at myself for not bringing something like that into the woods. I did some video of myself hitting some branches and trees and stuff with throws but it just didn't look or sound too "cool" so I left that out. And you know I am all about how cool I look on camera, I am such a slave to pop culture and fashion...LOL. THanks again for watching and commenting! - Craig
>goes moose hunting with that stick >moose detected >throws stick with inhuman velocity >moose explodes >tfw no proof of your kill because the animal was obliterated :(

Imagine' a merit badge today called "stalking"... Wow the times have changed.
Yeah, I don't really believe that one... Lol, sorry, I just don't.
I guess I shouldn't listen to you by your own advice. For something that could take about a minute to explain, you talked nonstop for seven minutes.

So glad you have heard of them now! Thanks for watching and for commenting. - Craig
