Really cool! During WWII, my older friend was in the US Army, stationed in Australia. He brought back a boomerang that looks like the ones you made. He told me it was for hunting, and that it isn't designed to come back, so we made some "X" shaped 'rangs, and I eventually got to throwing around a tree and catching it. I have his Australian 'rang hanging on the wall, and to me it's a beautiful piece of art.

The hunting ability of a boomerang is more of a value than its ability to comeback to the thrower.also it is more lethal than what most think it is.this is a different sport altogether

Props to this Aussie hunting traditionally. Great throwing! Seeing Aboriginal people hunt with boomerangs is a work of art. They use slightly different boomerangs for Rabbits and some other traditional hunting tools.

Considering the weapon was developed at a time when Australia did not have rabbits, it’s understandable that it is ineffective. From what anecdote I can remember, the boomerang is effective at crippling kangaroos, and possibly other longer-legged sprinters such as the emu.
There was no rabbits but a a lot of small marsupials and wallabies getting around... Made from Australian hardwood with a thin edge, if an emu or a man cops one to the head or neck, they won't be getting back up..

I wouldn't want to find out on a personal note, but I know they were used in aboriginal warfare for a reason. They were also used bring down large game like kangaroos and emus by breaking their legs and then finished off with a hitting stick later.

We even use the same vehicles and car tuning brands from Australia here because they are well adapted. By the way Eucalyptus was brought here from Australia and we have it everywhere now.

I'd always assumed the return-to-home feature of a boomerang was so the projectile could be thrown again quickly, but looking at that first near-miss, it dawned on me that the unique flight trajectory of a boomerang might actually be designed to strike targets from unexpected angles, for instance where the quarry sits behind obstacles that would block a straight-line shot. All told, it looks like an extremely difficult skill to master.
The returning ones are toys, or sometimes can be used with birds on the wing in flocks. These hunting ones only go straight due to the fact it's hard enough to judge where the game will be by the time it gets there as it is.

The normal hunting boomerang doesn't return and is heavier. It is spinning at high speed and can do a lot of damage. It is thrown with a flat trajectory and is quite accurate. It flies close to the ground and is used to take out large lizards and wallabies among other mammals. Then there is the boomerang used in war. This is bigger and heavier, and has one arm longer than the other. The short arm has a shaped stone bound and glued to the end of the arm. This can easily fracture a person's skull.
Great video Warwick. It illustrates so well just how difficult it is to hunt with any traditional weapon. The amount of practice that Koori Australians must have invested to hunt very effectively with spears, sticks and boomerangs just boggles the mind.
Thanks, I think they had no other choice but to get good at (do or die). I have met an aboriginal tribal man who used to live off the land and even he told me of the extreme struggles they had to survive.

I went from watching guys with extremely accurate scoped silenced rifles with advanced thermal/NVG under the cover of darkness to a man throwing a boomerang at lighting fast rabbits. Guess who I am more impressed with?
Finally a smart guy who goes through dangerous terrain in long big boy pants and a long sleeve shirt. Never understood these guys who are like "yeah, lots of snakes here" as they walk around in cargo shorts. A layer of protection is better than none.
Some years ago I was practicing throwing the boomerang in a wide open field. A rabbit came from some tall grass and sat and watched me for a while. It was almost as if he were thinking "This guy is so bad he'll never pose a threat to us rabbits."
The funny thing is that I'm an Italian who loves to make handmade boomerangs and I use them just for fun (the boomerangs that go back). I've never been in Australia unfortunately, but it looks like an amazing country where to live unique adventures! I ask sorry for my bad English, I'm still learning. 😄
That coney would've been scrumptious with a sprig of thyme bay leaf, and shallots or leeks minced in water and white wine simmered for 1 hour , then add chopped taters, carrot and a bit if salt and pepper or Hungarian paprika.
This guy's pretty damn good. Rabbits are not even a little slow and he's only missing by a few feet or less. It's just a matter of time before he works out the accuracy. Good stuff.

Thanks. It's a big thrill when you bag one. It took 2 years practice to finally get one and there were plenty around to learn on. I have played a lot of tennis which was a good foundation to follow a moving target. I hope to show people soon a good hit as I've move to an area with more bunnies now and am getting over a long term shoulder injury finally.

Airfoil profile is shaped into the wings, do as long as there is rotational momentum, it generates lift, so it can travel much further than a stick, and stay relatively close to the ground, instead of needing a high arching launch to get any distance.
We have a saying in Sweden, translated it would be: Close never killed a rabbit I guess all hunting is 70% skill 20% patience and 10% luck, it was the luck that kept the rabbit out of The pot for sure. Well after marriage my mom got my dads last name and they started a family. I’m the 3rd born and they named me Michael thus Mike Fernandez.
My sister once threw a shoe at a wild rabbit in our yard and actually hit it! She felt terrible about it because she was just trying to scare it away. The rabbit stumbled a little but ran off when it pulled itself back together. I suggest you throw your shoe, and if the rabbit's still kicking when you run up to it, beat it with the boomerang.
I was riding my motorcycle and a rabbit ran out from the side of the road. I stuck my foot out to prevent it from getting run over by the back tire. The impact of my boot broke it's back & killed it instantly. So I threw it over the handlebars and brought it home. I cleaned it & mom made a great stew!

Its called a 'boondi'. We used to hunt with local our Aboriginal friends, their uncles, brothers, fathers.. Central NSW. It was great fun, but it was for food plus they could be sold for $1 a pair. :)

That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. During WWII, my older friend was in the US Army, stationed in Australia. He brought back a boomerang that looks like the ones you made. He told me it was for hunting, and that it isn't designed to come back, so we made some "X" shaped 'rangs, and I eventually got to throwing around a tree and catching it.
I have his Australian 'rang hanging on the wall, and to me it's a beautiful piece of art.

What type of damage will a hunting boomerang cause on a human?
I wouldn't want to find out on a personal note, but I know they were used in aboriginal warfare for a reason. They were also used bring down large game like kangaroos and emus by breaking their legs and then finished off with a hitting stick later.

We even use the same vehicles and car tuning brands from Australia here because they are well adapted. By the way Eucalyptus was brought here from Australia and we have it everywhere now.

I'd always assumed the return-to-home feature of a boomerang was so the projectile could be thrown again quickly, but looking at that first near-miss, it dawned on me that the unique flight trajectory of a boomerang might actually be designed to strike targets from unexpected angles, for instance where the quarry sits behind obstacles that would block a straight-line shot. All told, it looks like an extremely difficult skill to master.
The returning ones are toys, or sometimes can be used with birds on the wing in flocks. These hunting ones only go straight due to the fact it's hard enough to judge where the game will be by the time it gets there as it is.

The normal hunting boomerang doesn't return and is heavier. It is spinning at high speed and can do a lot of damage. It is thrown with a flat trajectory and is quite accurate. It flies close to the ground and is used to take out large lizards and wallabies among other mammals.
Then there is the boomerang used in war. This is bigger and heavier, and has one arm longer than the other. The short arm has a shaped stone bound and glued to the end of the arm. This can easily fracture a person's skull.

The funny thing is that I'm an Italian who loves to make handmade boomerangs and I use them just for fun (the boomerangs that go back). I've never been in Australia unfortunately, but it looks like an amazing country where to live unique adventures! I ask sorry for my bad English, I'm still learning. 😄

That coney would've been scrumptious with a sprig of thyme bay leaf, and shallots or leeks minced in water and white wine simmered for 1 hour , then add chopped taters, carrot and a bit if salt and pepper or Hungarian paprika.
This guy's pretty damn good. Rabbits are not even a little slow and he's only missing by a few feet or less. It's just a matter of time before he works out the accuracy. Good stuff.

Awesome to see! A not so well known fact is that in Tutanchamun's tomb there were also hundreds of boomerangs found, likely to hunt small wildlife around the Nile river.

Thanks. It's a big thrill when you bag one. It took 2 years practice to finally get one and there were plenty around to learn on. I have played a lot of tennis which was a good foundation to follow a moving target. I hope to show people soon a good hit as I've move to an area with more bunnies now and am getting over a long term shoulder injury finally.

Airfoil profile is shaped into the wings, do as long as there is rotational momentum, it generates lift, so it can travel much further than a stick, and stay relatively close to the ground, instead of needing a high arching launch to get any distance.

Who taught YOU all these "Bush skills", Is it passed down father to son kind of or did you pick it up as you go along. Thanks Johan, some of the skills are from father to son, others are self taught, and others are just Aussie bush culture. I will keep trying - the rabbit will give up his lucky foot soon :)

Guardian831 Well it all happened when my mom and dad met. They are old fashioned so they went on a couple dates then the old fashioned people they are they waited to get married before sex. Well after marriage my mom got my dads last name and they started a family. I’m the 3rd born and they named me Michael thus Mike Fernandez.
My sister once threw a shoe at a wild rabbit in our yard and actually hit it! She felt terrible about it because she was just trying to scare it away. The rabbit stumbled a little but ran off when it pulled itself back together. I suggest you throw your shoe, and if the rabbit's still kicking when you run up to it, beat it with the boomerang.

I was riding my motorcycle and a rabbit ran out from the side of the road. I stuck my foot out to prevent it from getting run over by the back tire. The impact of my boot broke it's back & killed it instantly. So I threw it over the handlebars and brought it home. I cleaned it & mom made a great stew!

the trick with rabbits is to sneak up on them and sprinkle salt on their tail; then they become easier to catch
out spotlighting one night and caught a rabbit by hand with no salt; the little so n so bit me and scratched me....some how i think salt has a "magical" pacifying effect on rabbits,

Its called a 'boondi'. We used to hunt with local our Aboriginal friends, their uncles, brothers, fathers.. Central NSW. It was great fun, but it was for food plus they could be sold for $1 a pair. :)
I've noticed they're called a few things - throw stick, kylie, etc. Haven't heard of boondi before but I'll take your word for it. Hunting with the locals sounds like great fun :)
