@@pincopallo6 there are companies that are starting the make pre-assembled storage modules for the Mac Studio. So it should be possible with the MacMini. The SSD controller is not on the storage module it’s in the SOC. That storage module is primarily the NAND flash and power regulators.

I was hoping you had figured out how to build a compatible SSD card. Replacing the NAND chip is not something that anyone should do without proper tools and the knowledge you could easily destroy the entire card.

I don't think this is possible.. Apple places the flash controller on the motherboard. This is just NAND. Maybe someone can produce custom chips, unless apple has software restrcitions on 3rd party
you need to use second mac os device to install software, software itself will be downloaded automatically, you'll to connect mac in recovery (DFU) mode to your working device

The Base model M4 has a speed limiting bandwidth problem, you have to go to the M4 Pro to see 5-7Gbps R/W speeds on the SSD, and booting from an External Drive is a no-go, because if you do the Apple Intelligence, will not be available, Apple disables it if the OS is booted from an External Drive.
Oh simpler than biking, anyone could do that in seconds - everybody have those tools ready on hand, right :) End result somewhat close to same performance level if you used an external NVME SSD connected to thunderbolt port (with the added benefit not risking your mini being damaged and put out of warranty).

@L0p3s I saw tests where stock is pretty much 3000 and 3000, roughly the same. I mean you can buy win pc easily with 6000. this is ridiculous same speed as M1 mini from 2020 and were almost 2025.
cause it is using a pci3 gen -mid tier SSD controlers and all that. THe nands are just where you store the data, the controller is still the same budget one Apple used for this MacMini

Really? How many people can do this expertly? I have multiple Apple devices - Apple watch (3), air pods, phone (2), iPad (2), TV, and a Macbook Pro, however, IMO the $600 base Mac Mini 4 does not deserve the hype. It only has 256GB of storage which is what you would find in a 2005 computer. You can easily buy a MiniPC from multiple manufacturers with a comparable Ryzen 9 8945HS CPU, 1TB of storage and 32GB of memory for $650. Many MiniPC's support Occulink, have a display port, a 2.5GB LAN, plus a few USB 3.2 ports.
I doubt they would even if they legally could. Vast majority of Apple users are incapable of using screwdriver, not to mention soldering. So the numbers of modified Macs will be pretty low.

It’s actually possible, I’ve seen Chinese videos of a guy upgrading a MBA M1 with 8Gigs to 16 Gigs. But it’s very hard to do off course.

Yep noticed this....Though the speed would be about 5000 or 6000 and turns out they are the same as using a decent external and a nvme......
