The short answer is that in modern Arabic _dars_ is the word for "a lesson" and _diraasa_ is "the act of studying". So the second one is the _maSdar_ and the first is just a noun derived from the verb. HW includes _dars_ because it's often used in classical texts. And I really need to install Arabic characters on this old laptop.
You're a life saver thank you so much
جزاكم الله خير

Ian Campbell the "explaining " is fantastic ....I was looking for this video of nouns in lessons of many native tutors but no one had it ....you really have unpacked it .....But you need to give us a list of verbs with its vowels changes ...can you mail me or post a video
nice video. useful. do you now of some lists of masdars
available somewhere, on youtube, elsewhere on the internet,
in a book? i've been looking but i cannot find. i'd make a list
myself rewriting from a dictionary but there are no masdars
in my dictionary. could you perhaps prepare a video including
such a list? regards!
mashallah

Your explanation of the masdar becoming the mudof and the subsequent object becoming the mudof ilaihi is absolutely excellent. But learning and understanding the masdar is hard for me.
