Hi guys! I want to say thank you for creating such wonderful content to support students with their HL essay. I can already see improvements in my students' brainstorming and outline process. They have found your videos to be so helpful as it makes so many components of this paper less daunting. You're awesome! 🙌
Hi Joyce! Thanks so much for the comment. It feels good to know that our videos are reaching students and helping them with their essays and tasks. We’ll continue to try to break down skills and offer ways for kids to become better writers. Good luck with your teaching and guiding kids to the finish line.
Thank you for lifting that hood! This is very useful and something to encourage the students to do with each text we study. I also like the way the key words can be exchanged multiple times to generate multiple lines of inquiry. Keep up the good work!
Pull back the hood...lift up the curtain...something like that! Who knew that generating LOI could be kinda fun, right? We're really glad to know that our work is helpful to both teachers and students. Thanks for taking the time to write the comment :)
Hey guys. Just wanted to say that your channel is an absolute god send for me. Finding good content on IB English was really hard up until I found your channel!
Hello! I recently was introduced to your videos and am brand new to IB and have to write a question with a thesis statement. Do you have any suggestions with what I came up with? Or is this what they are supposed to look like? Please send me any feedback! Thank you so much! Line of inquiry- How and to what effect does Arthur Miller utilize flashbacks in the play Death of a Salesman, to illustrate the struggle for success and disappointment of the American Dream felt by the forgotten "little man" in America? Thesis- In the play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller uses flashbacks which he redefines as mobile concurrency of the past and the present to express the success or downfall in each character's attempt at the American dream.
Hi, guys. Firstly, thank you! This is my first year teaching IB and your channel’s a massive help. If you have time, please could you give your opinion on this LOI on Barbara Kruger’s body of work? It’s a two-parter, and I’m worried it’s too much for sufficient depth within the word count: “How does Barbara Kruger establish a connection with her audience in order to challenge the power that consumerism holds over modern capitalist society in her visual art?”
I understand and like the rich idea of consumerism but I wonder if “establish a connection with the audience” can be worked out more specifically. Is there a broad aspect used by Kruger that would allow her to establish a connection? Satirical conventions? Images and Composition? Visual elements? I feel like establishing a focus for WHAT aspect the paper will explore will give it more specificity. I like the rich idea very much.
Hello! Can I use three literary devices, or should I focus only on one? What do you guys recommend? Thank you for your videos!! they are of great help. You are both very kind.
You need a literary aspect to focus on. Of course, in your HL essay you will be referring to MANY literary devices. Let your aspect be wide enough to enable you to discuss and analyze the text.
Great video, was really helpful! If possible, could you give your opinion on these two LOI on Szymborska's "Map", analysing the poem "Funeral (I)", "The Suicide's Room" and "Pieta". How does Szymborska use imagery to represent ideas about the subjectivity of human perspective when faced with death? How does Syzmborska illustrate how different representations of death affect our perception and understanding of it?
You can consider a concept in your approach as well if that helps you arrive at a rich idea and a good argument. It’s not necessary to put that in your LOI however.
Hello, the book I have chosen for hl essay is a post-modern work. In my research question, I will write about how the post-modern elements used in the book are used to explain the issue of gender inequality. Is it too broad if I say only post-modern elements? Thank you for this amazing channel, your videos are really helpful. Also, you both have great energy and are very compatible with each other. Again, many thanks for making us useful videos!!
Hi. This is great question. In your example, we feel that focusing on a particular aspect of post-modern literature would be wise. See if you can narrow down your focus and be a bit more specific.
What is a literary/linguistic aspect? like is a literary aspect like literary terms? or no? same with linguistic aspect? also same with authorial choices aren’t they also literary terms too?
We see a literary aspect as a literary element that an author uses/utilizes to create their work. It may be character, setting, symbol, imagery, motif or theme. The idea is that you are considering your work from a literary angle and need to consider CRAFT as you hone your line of inquiry. Then you link this to a rich idea or message. This will get you off to a good start. The aspect should be broad enough to allow you to discuss various moves in the text and explore it for 1500 words.
@@ibenglishguys So what would be the difference between a literary element, device, and term or aren’t they virtually the same thing? Because I have seen people use them interchangeably. So if that’s what a Literary element is then like setting and characters. Wouldn’t imagery and symbol not be part of that because where would figurative language come in to play like would metaphors, similes, symbolism, onomatopoeia fall under literary elements?
Yes. Your line of inquiry can be written in the form of a question and be on the title page of your paper. Then you make this into a statement and use this for your thesis. Read over a few of the examples that we have posted as links to our HL Essay videos. Good luck.
It is a theme or a concept that comes from the text you are talking about. It is part of the “so what?” to a text. It could be related to the topic (or issue) that the text explores.

Super! A good literary focus and a rich idea. I like it.

I like the first one but can you narrow down what type of imagery? Nature imagery? Violent imagery? Spatial imagery? Light imagery? Auditory?
@@ibenglishguys Would changing it to figurative language and irony as the literary aspect be better
Nice video! What about the core concept? Should that not be included in the Line of Inquiry question? Should that be chosen first?
You can consider a concept in your approach as well if that helps you arrive at a rich idea and a good argument. It’s not necessary to put that in your LOI however.

Yes. Your line of inquiry can be written in the form of a question and be on the title page of your paper. Then you make this into a statement and use this for your thesis. Read over a few of the examples that we have posted as links to our HL Essay videos. Good luck.
What is a "rich idea"?
It is a theme or a concept that comes from the text you are talking about. It is part of the “so what?” to a text. It could be related to the topic (or issue) that the text explores.
