Because I saw that you took the mcat in June but started receiving secondaries on July 1, that's amazing! It depends on the school. For me, I think I received 11 out of 15 secondaries before they received my MCAT score. Prescreening before sending out secondaries would be a lot of work, and not sending a secondary to someone means $100 less in secondary fees for the school (me being cynical lol). It can get daunting with all the info out there. It is especially close to home as I am an fell North Carolinian myself. Went to ECU quite a few years ago and haven't really left the state but a short amount of time. You talking about specific schools that are near and dear to me, give me even a greater understanding. I hope that you are have all the successes that this career can bring.

Thanks for subscribing. That's a really interesting question. The need that I most often hear about by far is for primary care physicians in rural settings. The data supports primary care physicians as being the most "in demand," but that doesn't mean there isn't a shortage in essentially every specialty where you might have many month wait times to see a specialist even if there is a specialist near you.

@@themiamilife Well, you're part of a huge club getting rejected from NYU, so don't bat an eye at that. Schools generally won't be sending anything over the winter break, so as hard as it is, hopefully you can take a break from the stress of checking email/sdn/etc. Keep up hope that the application cycle is barely half way through, even if it probably doesn't feel that way. I know it's tough, but all you can do is stay positive/hopeful and know that you're goals of becoming a doctor are bigger than just one application cycle if they need to be. Best of luck, Rex.
The Fee Assistance Program only helps a little...how would you endure four years of medical school and paying the rent each month? Can you help me out and tell me how it is you are paying the rent portion?

Most students take out federal unsubsidized loans to meet their financial need which includes those living expenses. I'll be coming out with a video soonish covering the economics of medical school and how even taking out $100,000 per year in loans is still "worth it" from a financial perspective.

I wouldn't say I did them sooo fast. I received my first secondary on July 1st and didn't submit my first one until 15 days later on July 16th. There are a lot of people that recommend at most a two week turn around, and they pre-write their secondaries in order to be able to do so. My last secondary I submitted a whole 2 months and 7 days after I got it! (Not recommended) That being said, they started to get a lot faster once they started to repeat each other and I could copy and paste a significant amount of the essay from a previous secondary. Additionally, towards the end I was maybe getting a little bit lazy and not looking over as much and just submitting first or second drafts. However, I also got better and more efficient at writing them as I wrote more and more and more lol.
@@VenkatGadde I won't pretend I'm an expert on these. But overall, yes they seem like they can be a great thing: you can focus on your interests in undergrad rather than a cookie cutter application doing what you are "supposed" to do. Additionally, if it has an automatic acceptance, this weight taken off your shoulders is invaluable. I also think the benefit of potentially finishing both in 6/7 years depending on the program is yet another plus: both financially and you get to start a career you love sooner (some are still 8). Of course, it is hard to predict what school would be the best fit for you or even knowing you want to be a doctor at that point for some/many/most people. Additionally, I imagine they may be extremely competitive to get in to, and the people who are accepted would probably have no extreme difficulty getting into med school as a traditional applicant--and in fact potentially a higher tier med school than their guaranteed acceptance BS/MD school. But in short, if you know for sure med school is in your future, know you'll love the school or can be happy wherever you end up, I think the BS/MD are awesome. (Again, I will say I have no personal experience, so this is hypothetical).
Answer these next 2 questions: what is the maximum you personally are taking out in student loans per year? can it exceed $80,000 or not? That’s $320,000 before tuition gets taken off.
At this point, I'm going to keep my own financial situation private. Planning to talk more in depth about that possibly once I graduate medical school. I may change my mind, but that's the plan for now. Duke's total cost of attendance (tuition + living expenses) is about $95,000 per year. So yes, it can exceed $80,000 per year. Does that answer your question? I'm not sure if I follow you on "before tuition gets taken off."

For federal unsubsidized loans, you can borrow up to $20,500 per year @ 4.3% interest with an aggregate loan limit of $138,500 including undergrad loans. BUT then you can use Federal direct PLUS Loans @ 5.3% interest to cover the rest. Quoting from studentaid.gov: "The maximum PLUS loan amount you can receive is the cost of attendance (determined by the school) minus any other financial aid received." Additionally, you can use private student loans. For example, you can borrow up to the full cost of attendance from SallieMae or most banks.

You can go entirely federal and borrow $20,500 in federal direct unsubsidized loans and an additional $69,500 in federal direct PLUS loans per year (what I meant by covering the rest). Alternatively, you can go entirely private and just borrow $90,000 per year from SallieMae or any other number of private student loan companies. You also can do a combination and borrow $20,500 in federal direct unsubsidized loans and $69,500 from SallieMae (covering the rest). Of course, that's only three examples. Generally for most people, starting with federal direct unsubsidized until its maxed out at the $20.5k is the best and then looking toward either private or PLUS loans is the best strategy.
As someone who is an upcoming freshman in college wanting to be a physician one day, idk why I watched this video first. No offense or insult to you and this video but this video is kinda letting me down thinking if this guy gets couple medical school accepted, then theres absolute no way for me to get accepted to any medical schools in the United States. I know I shouldn't be this negative since I have time but I'm having that feeling right now.
I have been telling the world for 50 years that medical care is a necessity, unlike the arts/humanities/entertainment, and that we can therefore never have enough doctors & nurses and therefore nursing and medical schools should allow everyone in who wants in. And governments should pay the schools and the students to teach & to learn all this knowledge. Not my fault things are not this way. I have no control over that.
The government does at least pay a big chunk of the cost for educating residents. But the BIG problem with this, is that the number of residency spots available are now dependent on government funding in the U.S. So medical schools can't accept more students until the government funds more residency spots for the medical students to fill once they graduate, and who knows when the government is going to start funding significantly more residency spots.
Govt funding for school is fine but should be done on forgivable loan basis, not plain grant. Work off forgivable loan by practicing in rural or other physician shortage areas. Otherwise, students just get grant and then go to more popular and lucrative areas. We have many capable and intelligent doctor and nursing students who only need money to go to school. We have much need for nurses and doctors and the govt just says there are shortages and they can’t fill empty slots. Forgivable loans allow for repayment by work contracts so both benefit..the indigent student and the “doctor/nurse poor” hospitals and municipalities. Of course, the exclusive “doctor and old boys clubs” might not like this free funding plan as they see it as damaging and diminishing their control by reducing their exclusivity and “old boy’s club” power to decide who gets to join the AMA or CMA.
As an international student i have a question what if i study in a science program in another country can i still have mcat exam and can i get into med school in usa?
I think so, but I will admit applying to medical school as an international student is something I don't know much about. Sorry I can't be more helpful
