  • The new Hades Canyon NUC from Intel features an interesting hybrid solution of an Intel CPU with AMD Radeon graphics in a fairly small package, but how well does the NUC perform? In this review I’ve tested the NUC in 12 different games, and briefly compared it to a couple of laptops to give you an idea of where it fits in.

    I've been using this device for 2 weeks now and simply loving every bit of it.
    If you are a gamer buy a console.
    but if you want a machine that doesnt scream GAMER and does decent graphics handling, is portable when u have monitors avialable at all your work points.
    This is the machine.

      Not really, IMO. With 16GB ram and a 1TB SSD, it brings the base price up to about $900-1000 and for that, I expect more than gtx 1050 performance and an i7. I'd rather have a laptop considering my situation, so I think if they made the GPU faster even if I had to have an i3/i5... maybe gtx 1060 performance ish (of course I don't expect shadowplay and CUDA cores and stuff but like graphics wise

    • @christianseehausen9264
      @christianseehausen9264 6 років тому +3

      The performance is significantly better than a GTX 1050. It's moderately better than a desktop 1050ti, but not as good as a 1060. That said, it's still a niche product, and you're right that a laptop will make more sense for many people in this price range (self included). Hard to do better than this though if you want a small form factor HTPC/console killer that just sits behind your living room TV all day.

    Thanks for a good review. Even though I'm months late, I feel I must add. The graphics performance is handicapped by about 10% by only running single channel memory. The AMD semi-integrated graphics really requires you to maximize memory bandwidth (running dual channel 2400+ MHz) to see its full performance. Temps would be slightly elevated as well. It has its own internal memory, but not enough to load full game scenes.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

      Cheers! Indeed, unfortunately I didn't have spare memory to also test dual channel and this was how it was sent to me so wasn't anything I could do there.

      So I watched it at 2x speed. I'd say it needs 24gb of ram as when the 4gb of hbm2 vram runs out it'll rely on ram, lovely build quality! Nice and small and light! And IO galore!!! Also eveyrone now knows your unit's address, and it's cool that your sponsored by mwave, did you go to their little showcase? Room for oc? NOPE! temps are too high for cpu to bother. Due to no optimization from amd or dev's I wouldn't suggest buying it purely for gaming as the price for storage alone is high. Another great review Jarrod can't wait to see the next one! i9? Next gen helios? I don't mind because you do not disappoint!! Sorry for a rushed format comment.

    Wow, what a great review. You really touched on all the topics that are important to the end user. I'm actually considering buying this particular NUC for productivity+light gaming use. Have a few questions, though (TL;DR: about noise level in browsing/light workload and 1440p gaming without need for high fps at max settings).
    Firstly, concerning productivity... Your noise test indicated that this NUC is pretty much silent when in idle (room AC would drown out the low noise coming from the NUC) and in your gaming test the noise levels sounded similar to the newest, more quiet PS4 Pro. What about the noise level in low workloads? Let's say a few browser tabs open and a UA-cam 1080p clip playing. Is it closer to idle noise or gaming noise from your review?
    Secondly, concerning gaming... You tested 1080p gaming but what about 1440p gaming at moderate quality? Is this NUC up for the task if you don't require +60fps at Ultra/Epic. For example, I've seen a clip of Witcher 3 being played at 1440p/High and the frame rates seemed to be playable (around 35-45fps). I only ask because I have a 1440p IPS monitor with Freesync and would love to play without scaling.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

      Thanks! From what I recall it didn't get very loud just browsing the Internet, probably close to idle levels. I'd expect the gaming test in my video to be similar to at 1440p, despite lower settings it probably results in similar GPU load, but I didn't specifically test that so just my best guess. Some games are probably fine to run at 1440p with lower settings, depends on the game, looking back now I'm not sure why I didn't test 1440p, must have been stretched for time when I had it on loan.

    • @johnorion496
      @johnorion496 5 років тому +1

      @@JarrodsTech Thanks for getting back to me on my queries. By the way, do you have any experience with mini-ITX custom PCs. I'm actually trying to decide between this NUC and a SG13 build with an RTX 2070 GPU (I see you've reviewed this GPU). With the latter I'd get more performance and upgradability but at the cost of a 10x bigger case (I'm the kind of guy who tends to choose smaller footprint). One deciding factor is the fan noise. On average, do you think mini-iTX builds with something like the RTX 2070 GPU inside are quieter than this NUC? Both have a lot of tech inside and not optimal airflow but which would be more silent on average.
      UPDATE: Checked out your RTX 2070 review. Should've known you'd be as thorough as you were with the NUC review. =) The noise levels on idle (though you mentioned that the case fans were emitting noise as well) were higher than the NUC's (from further away if I remember correctly) were when gaming. While you weren't using a mini-ITX case (but a tower which has better airflow), this gives me some reference to what the noise difference between a NUC and a custom PC would be. Clearly I should go with a NUC if I don't have a high tolerance for PC noise.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

      @@johnorion496 no problem! I don't have any experience with mini itx unfortunately, I am interested in getting into it though as a bit sick of my large workstation PC. The channel "Optimum Tech" does a lot of small form factor builds and testing, worth checking out. My guess would be the NUC is quieter though. I also do the same system sound tests with all my gaming laptop reviews, so those might be useful as a further point of reference too.

    • @YisName
      @YisName 5 років тому +1

      Hey, John. Looks like our tastes are similar, I’m also considering this nuc for 1440p display. Have you bought it or some substitution? Could you share your experience?

    • @johnorion496
      @johnorion496 5 років тому +2

      @@YisName Yes, I did buy the NUC8i7HVK. I'm very happy with it. I bought Dell S2719DC 1440p monitor for it and together they form such a sleek-looking, compact setup that I don't miss my iMac at all.
      The NUC is very quiet. I first had it set to Quiet profile via BIOS which made it literally inaudible (I say 'literally' because sometimes I get the feeling some PC folk with rigs that emit low but audible humming on idle say 'inaudible' when it's not) but changed it back to the default Balanced as it lowered the temps from 58-60 degrees to 51-54 degrees in light use. With Balanced I can hear a small, slightly high-pitched hum in a totally quiet room but it's so small that sometimes I'm not sure where's it coming from. I was very surprised that when I game in 1440p, the noise levels are actually surprisingly low, similar or lower when compared to a PS4 Slim. Bare in mind though that some have received units that have annoying fan rattle -type sound. I lucked out, I guess.
      As for the performance in games... I have been able to play games such as Arkham Knight, Witcher 3 and Dark Souls III at 1440p with varying details. With Dark Souls III I didn't have to touch the settings at all. With Arkham Knight I lowered the details to Medium to get smoother action. Witcher 3 is power-hungry and I was getting around 35-45fps with Low/Med details. Bare in mind though that I have disabled Turbo Boost via BIOS . I did this to make this PC quiet but it does affect performance a bit (my Geekbench scores were somewhat lower than the scores of other Hades Canyon owners). Still, I feel safe in saying that even at 1440p I can throw any game at this NUC and make it very playable just as long as I adjust the details a bit and don't expect +60fps in power-hungry games like Witcher 3. I did play through Half-Life 2 the other week and got the max 75fps at 1440p with every detail setting maxed out.
      A few other notes.. I went with Samsung 970 Evo NVMe 512Gb SSD M.2 drive and I advise you not to save money and buy a cheaper drive (heard people have had issues with Hades Canyon and Crucial P1 SSDs). I also went with Crucial DDR4-2666 RAM (2x8Gb) as you can go up to DDR4-3200 without the need to visit BIOS (although I've heard G.Skill RAM might require setting up). I went with Crucial value RAM as my research indicated that gaming/performance RAM isn't worth it in this setup.
      Are the any cons? Well, the audio ports were noisy with my H/K Soundsticks 2.1 PC speakers. The ports were fine with my headphones but the speakers emitted audio interference which was really annoying. I ended up getting one of those USB DACs (Fiio K3) which fixed the issue. Bare in mind though that most likely this was speaker-related and some other speakers might work fine the audio ports.
      All in all, I highly recommend this PC if you want something that is both compact and powerful. Yes, to some the price is high but I can't think of any other solution for the money where you get this much power in a 1.2L chassis that emits very little noise (no, a PS4 Pro does not count). By the way, the computer I was going for before I decided to get a Win10 NUC was the 5K iMac which costs around 2800-3000 bucks (including large enough SSD and 16 gigs of RAM) where I'm from. So I basically saved well over a thousand bucks.

    Great hardware but its just too skewed away from the price/performance balance. You can get either a better gaming laptop or assemble a better gaming desktop for around the same cost. In my opinion the only NUCs that are worth purchasing are those $200-400 meant as mini HTPC and even those I feel Intel is pushing a steep price due to lack of competition. If AMD was releasing NUC equivalents, that wouldn't be the case.

    How come this only has Bluetooth 4.2 while other cheaper nucs (like NUC8i5BEK) support BT 5!
    Is that because the latter is newer?

      I'm honestly not sure on that one, the same thing happens in laptops too, just depends what wifi card they install as that will determine the supported version of Bluetooth which does mean you should be able to swap out the m.2 card with a better one if you want it

    Wondering if you can reverse the ventilation back to front. I would back mount it via Vesa mount, like to have me cables connected to the bottom but the hot air exhausted to the top.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

      It's got 2 Mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs and an HDMI 2.0a output, we can check what these specs support here:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_standard_video
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Resolution_and_refresh_frequency_limits
      DP 1.2 should do 240Hz at 1080p, and seems possible at 1440p with lower colour quality, similar deal for HDMI 2.0. That said I have not tested running at 240Hz, this is all theory based on what the spec should support.
