    Many thanks for the video! I realize there is no need at all to disassemble the unit in order to clean it, by the way I did not have a can of compressed air available so I actually user a leaf blower from a reasonable distance. Now it runs much much cooler and quieter :)

    I have successfully disassemble my nuc by this video, however I what to give some opinion on the process:
    1. I do suggest disassemble the mother board and the heat sink when you try to remove the board from the case, I remove the remove the board with the heat sink on board and it was very painful, some of the heat sink damaged in the process, remove the heat sink will make the process easier.
    2. I usually disconnect the cable of RGB case light by the front penal side.
    This video really help me to disassemble my nuc for cleaning, thank you very much.

      How to remove the heatsink?

    • @nycbearff
      @nycbearff 8 місяців тому

      @@SpaceCadet4Jesus The four screws the video guy says to not remove - remove them, and it disengages the motherboard from the heat sink.
      IF you do that, be sure to have new good quality thermal past handy - you will need to clean the old thermal paste from the heat sink and CPU /GPU chips, and re-apply it before you put it back together. Other people have made videos on how to do that

    Great video, super easy to follow. I had to disassemble my NUC and give it a proper cleaning, something I might have neglected over the years. At some point, compressed air alone just doesn't cut through the thick layers of dust.

  • @GreenLegendRan
    @GreenLegendRan 2 роки тому +1

    This teardown was critical to getting to my fans and heatsink, so thanks. I came here to say that no amount of vaccuum or compressed air was getting the dust cake out of a certain part of the heatsink that didn't line up perfectly with the fans, and that cake of dust was causing my PC to overheat during games, and the fan to run at all times. It's silent and no longer crashes in games, since I was able to access that dense, felted dust. Four years of cleaning from the vent holes had allowed it to accumulate.

    I would disagree on one point. If your fans get clogged you will need to disassemble in order to clear the clog. Other than that the video is spot on and very easy to follow. I just cleaned mine out (the fans were clogged up completely and my temps went down from 95C+ to 73c

  • @silverxxvi8193

    Thanks for the video, it was very useful.
    I took my Hades Canyon apart today after a year's use for cleaning.
    My chassis seems to differ slightly, there is a metal L-tab over the top of the HDMI connector (I can't spot it in your video) which made removing the motherboard difficult. Maybe I didn't hit on the correct technique, but it was so difficult I decided to remove the 4 screws and brace so that I could remove the motherboard without also removing the heatsink. This meant I did not have to lift it straight up and could slip it out at an angle.
    Of course this meant I had to re-apply thermal paste afterwards (I used Arctic MX-4). My core temps writing this with a browser open are 50C (room temp 25C), idle temp is around 40C.

    I wish intel could make a hardware change on their next gen that users can open the cooler side separately. it's already making people pop open the box for ram/storage installations why make it hard for a-more-detailed cleaning.

    9:18 isnt it hbm2 memory instead of gddr5?

    • @cabdouch
      @cabdouch 6 років тому +2

      Howdy NoulC, Yes that is what it is, but most people don't know what High-Bandwidth Memory is. For those that don't know, the DRAM DIEs are stacked and have an ultra-wide interface to the controller. Typically for HBM2, it is a 1024-bit wide connection that runs at 2 GT/s. The memory is also "tightly-coupled" meaning that it physically sits a very short distance to the GPU so that the "flight time" of the signals is reduced and synchronization can be easier. At these extreme speeds, the length of the copper runs between the GPU and Memory and can cause delays. By doing a tightly-coupled design, the flight times are reduced and the bandwidth increases. By routing the signals on an interposer or carrier, you can also guarantee signal integrity and make sure to get the highest bandwidth possible since you don't have to worry about the motherboard design or signals on other layers affecting the signal integrity.

The original thermal paste is probably dried up anyway, but the original thermal paste used was poor quality, I replaced it and dropped 15c off my CPU temps. There is some thermal paste and some thermal pads, nothing like the nonsense he says. It’s perfectly safe if you know what you’re doing.

      Howdy John, I was at Intel last week for several meetings discussing both current projects we're working with Intel on and future NUC products. The date was discussed but unfortunately, our expectations were set for late April now. We will continue to update the Pre-Order page with the latest information. I did not ask why it was delayed but will. Because of our relationship, sometimes I am given confidential information and we're careful not to release it. Obviously it doesn't matter what the reason is, we're all just really anxious to start getting them in the field. With that said, most of the initial 200 piece First Production Build are over half sold.

    You should definitely unscrew the four screws holding the motherboard to the heat sink, and change the thermal paste. That also lets you remove the motherboard by sliding it backwards and out, not just lifting it straight up - which wasn't possible in my Hades Canyon because of metal tabs that don't seem to be in this guy's machine.
    All that "don't open it, it's engeneered to be permanet" is BS. The original thermal paste was poor quality - I opened my machine after 5 years, and the paste had turned hard and chalky, which was contributing to it overheating. I replaced it with good quality paste that should last a lot longer.
    I also had a felt-like buildup on the output grid which was preventing the fans from cooling properly - that was what I was expecting, and it's a lot cooler now that the fans are running properly.
    Yes, do regular maintenance every two or three months if you have pets or cloth near your NUC. Especially blow compressed air into the back of the machine - that, I have realized, will prevent that buildup of fibers that block the opening. Once that felt-like pad formed, blowing into it didn't get rid of it, it was too dense.
    Here's how to replace the thermal paste:

      @cabdouch 6 років тому

      You can go into BIOS settings and set for "Quiet" which spins the fans up later and not as much which means the processor runs hotter, or "cool" which spins the fans up sooner to keep the proc cooler. I will be attempting to capture the fan noise during my next video.

    • @simplynuc
      @simplynuc  6 років тому

      The fans spin very slowly at idle and are not noticeable at all. I don't believe there is any way to disable them. Some airflow is needed to protect the system

    • @cabdouch
      @cabdouch 6 років тому +1

      Our video editor is working on a blower sound level video now, but at idle you cannot hear the blowers as they spin down to 500-700rpms.
      One note is that all of this depends on how cool the room the computer is operating in is. If the room if 85f then the blowers will always be spun up a little more. I turned off the AC for the video I shot since it is louder than the Hades Canyon in all but the highest 2 speeds. Room temp was around 74f and got to around 76f by the end of the video.
      The blowers run around 500-700 RPM when sitting at windows or running light applications. I began running a graphics benchmark program which is intensive in nature and the blower spun up to a level I could hear them from 1' away. Note that in the video that is coming, the camera and mic are 1' away from the exhaust of the Hades Canyon.
      Then blowers spun up to a louder level and eventually to a much higher level, which could be heard regardless of which direction the exhaust of the Hades Canyon was facing.
      Due to the high amount of cooling there is at this blower speed level, it over-cooled the GPU and spun back down to a level above the idle, which the blowers are barely heard. Then later they spun back up 2 more steps. Occasionally it would spin up to its highest levels, but only for around 20 seconds and then would spin back down to the second from lowest.
      Overall, I would guess that the blowers have 4 or maybe 5 steps.
      Step 1 = Really low and undetectable even in a quiet room
      Step 2 = Low and mostly quiet, but easily detected in a totally quiet room, but not detectable with other sounds going on (A/C, talking, music, etc)
      Step 3 = Easily heard, but still comfortable level. Still quieter than our A/C system, but perhaps not others.
      Step 4 = Pretty loud, similar to a desktop system or laptop running at its highest speed, but with a lower tone due to the larger blowers.
      Step 5 (if present) = Probably louder than you want it and can be easily heard
      Even under continuous high loads, Step 4 and 5 are only going for around 20 seconds with the system stepping down to Step 2 for 40 seconds and then stepping back up. Every time the unit got to the highest or next to highest levels, it didn't last long and always stepped back down to Step 2, even though the system was still operating at a saturated load.

    I didn't get why shouldn't I take off radiator from the processor. I will definetely want to change termal compound on cpu and gpu to liquid metal when I get mine. The obvious reason that is serial paste is bad and intel is famous on adding even worse termal compound in their processors.

      The Hades is much quieter. Running an AAA game on it did not heat it as much as the Benchmark did. Under normal use, the blowers are both running around 700 RPM, which was low enough to have difficulty telling they were running.
      Most applications other than heavy graphics work should not heat the system up enough for it to have to work hard to cool down.
      I have another video going up of the blowers running with the mic 1' from the output of the blowers. To get them to run hard, I had to run a Graphics Benchmark program for quite awhile.

      h1 cases were the right size unless its a server. Its nice having an extra slut i mean slot for pci express but I could just take it in or send it away after a few years..its like cell phones, there gonna be smaller not under a 100lbs.

    • @stiIIy
      @stiIIy 6 років тому +1

      Abe Coulter then you should know the moisture is very unlikely to come out unless the can is empty

      Thats why you gotta wait for PC to cool down before doing this stuff. Also don't hold the can upside down else you will freeze the area lol
