After the F1 drivers you were seeing the best drivers in the world. Nothing compares to them. Nascar doesn't even come close. Make no mistake, the cars they drive and the technical teams are the pinnacle of technology. I follow these rallies live in Portugal and the speed between the limit of the car and beyond is frightening, at which they pass on narrow roads and zero margin of error, flanked by walls, trees and precipices. Enjoy the world of WRC.

This video is about the WRC Event at Finland, the 1000 Lakes Rally, nicknamed the "Gravel Grand Prix" for the insane speeds achieved. So much is so that *average* speeds are around 120 km/h, with max speeds hitting even over 200 km/h (all of this on gravel and dirt country roads).
Experiencing these 1.6 Super WRC cars going a it in person in Finland must be nuts, they are the fastest machines ever to rip through the woods, but I gotta say that although slower, seeing the insanely visceral and iconic Group B cars racing there had to be just an out of this world thing to presence.

It depends on what you consider dangerous. Rally crashes can be _intense_ but serious injuries or fatalities are rare in modern era. I can't remember when that happened. In 80's world championship rallying was proper dangerous... Those cars they drive nowadays are ridiculously safe. I.e last year Ott Tänak had a crash in monte carlo, which looks absolutely insane. First thing you think is that no one survives that. Well in civilian car no one probably would but these are WRC cars and Tänak and his co-driver walked out of the car without a scratch.

Thank you for this great video! A minor detail though, Finland has more rally world champions, so drivers who have won the title, than any other country in the world. And the current world champion rally team, Toyota, is also run by Finns in Finland again.

@@fairytale8554 80 mph is about 135-140 km/h. 200-230 km/h is what they reach at the straights since rally cars have short gears they usually dont reach more. On the very twisty tarmac stages they rarely reach more than 150 km/h so its mostly about fast acceleration. I have read about rally, especially group B for over 12 years.

These cars go about same speed than group B went early days, but different tech and safety mechanics. Speed at these roads is somewhere 100-200 km/h. Roads are ment to 40-60 km/h with civil car. If you look rally of 1000 lakes, you might bump familiar cars and drivers from group B. Lots of them were Finnish. Even Henry toivonen who did last crazy crash at group b was Finnish driver.

As others have commented, Finland is a big rally country (among other things).. Here is something for you to watch - one of the Group-B Finnish rally drivers breaking all records at Pikes Peak in USA a bit after Group-B was canceled in -86. Yea, we Europeans came with out odd street cars sporting anywhere from 500 to 1000hp there and showed how it is done (I think the car in the video has near 950hp, just like -87 years Audi Evo would have had in the rally) ;)

It might look dangerous and it certainly is, but everything is kind of relative. During the last 50 years of WRC Rally Championships "only" 20 drivers and co pilots have lost their lives.
While all these cars you see here are based on "normal car types and platforms" that are sold everywhere around the western world, the "beasts" you see in this video are enhanced and pimped for that kind of sport in every way possible! The small and "cheap" looking cars you see in this video
cost around a million bucks each! The drivers and co pilots wear fireproof suits, helmets and gloves and are strapped with the best belt systems you can get to the most advanced seats you can imagine and sit inside of a steel cage inside of the car. They may overturn 5 times while falling down a 10 meter deep hill/cliff, kick the smashed doors open, get out with two broken hips and grab the hand-held extinguisher to fight the flames coming out of the motor compartment.(Not EXACTLY what happened in the linked video, but you might get an idea of what certainly happens once in a while during these races)
