A Brief History of Konami

- Founded as a jukebox repair company some five decades ago, Konami rapidly turned into one of Japan's most beloved publishers and developers of video games, giving the world the likes of Metal Gear, Castlevania, Contra, and more. But as the corporation became more and more distracted by profitable ventures outside of core gaming, its reputation began to collapse. Not that the company cares all that much. Today, Konami is a shadow of its former self to hardcore games consumers at the same time it's raking in record revenues and profits. So just what's going on over there, anyway? Well, to understand what's happening now, it's important we first go back and explore the past.

Hey everyone. This is Sophia Narwitz. I’m the new primary writer for Side Quest. I hope you like this first script I wrote, and I look forward to hopefully delivering future content that you enjoy. I'll do my best to not ruin this channel for you. :D
Hey Sophia. I already followed you on Twitter so this was a cool surprise knowing that you are now a part of CLS. Welcome to the community and I hope to see a fireside chat soon on everything ranging from video games to politics to lgbt community. Great script so far!
Well done

Welcome to the CLS community, Ms. Narwitz. You have elected to work for a bright, fair, and level-headed individual. Although I may not agree with everything he says, years of watching and reading Colin's content has engendered in my mind a solid amount of trust in his decision making skills. If he thought you were the best person for the job, then I have no doubt we have some fantastic content to look forward to!! Congratulations on becoming a part of the very best of the gaming press. Good luck.
@@sergiodevivo16 Wait.... How is Ms. Narwitz involved in _Sacred Symbols?_ Is Chris gone???
I took, from her comment above, that she's writing scripts and content for CLS Side Quest videos, like the one you're commenting on now, not for _Sacred Symbols_ -- which is an essentially unscripted podcast hosted by Colin and Chris Ray Gun.
I'm not saying I'm right. I'm only going by the comment above. Where did you get your information?
Please make "A Brief History" for each game company. This is great.
This^
Fine, but if I have to do all that research, you owe me a boat load of coffee.
@@Sophnar0747 we'll send you a boatload on a monthly basis. ..maybe.
I'm fairly convinced that Colin Moriarty doesn't actually exist anymore. He hasn't shown his face in like, what, a year?
I thoroughly believe that Colin was forced to pre-record a large amount of content before being taken captive by the far left gaming press, put through a trial in a kangaroo-courtroom in the basement of Polygon's offices, and summarily executed by a woke firing squad.
With our hero out of the way, they're coming for all of _us_ next. In fact, I'll be surprised if they don't get to me before I can finish typing thi
Dave Carsley your comment made me genuinely belly laugh. Thanks man !
I suppose they will be coming for me nex
Two Side Quest episodes? Thanks Colin! I'm listening to it now.
I'd love to see more of these. Atari, Sega, Capcom, Acclaim, THQ, etc. there are so many interesting stories to be told about long standing or now defunct game companies.
Gotta say, this video was excellent! It reminded me of the "History of" series that I fell in love with Colin for (albeit without those behind the scenes interviews and the like). A real quick but thoroughly entertaining dive into the history of a bizarre but fondly remembered company.
I'd say you are uniquely qualified to do this work. Keep 'em coming!
Hey fam! I hope you all enjoyed the edit on this one and the goofs I put in. ❤️
OMG it looks really awesome! Colin barely edited his videos in the past so all the extra cuts and flair added is welcomed. Great job.
TheGamingShelf Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great work! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
It was great!
Fantastic editing, really entertaining!
FINALLY!!!
Been anxious for a proper CLS Side Quest for so long. Thanks Colin!
Great video, I love hearing the history of the industry like this. Thanks you
Great episode. Awesome editing Dustin. 👍
As disappointed as I am with the company's recent decisions, I still love Konami for who they once were.
Great video Colin shout out from the Bronx
and Queens :D
I bet the one dislike was a Konami rep. Nice work colin.
Konami will always hold a special place in my heart for the Yugioh card game, which I still play today
I just wanted to say props for the very high-quality writing in this video - you have a way with words, good sir :)
I wrote it! I'm the new primary writer. Glad you liked it!
I absolutely love these kind of videos that delve into the history of the industry and developers. More of these please! Awesome!
Holy shit the editing on this video is on point. I love seeing CLS mature. Slow and methodical. Keep killing it Colin!
❤️👍
Do one on THQ Nordic
Give us a Suikoden collection!
This is the best content you do, Colin. I love this stuff. Looking forward to hearing more about the work you're doing with Sophia and seeing more of this content. It would be incredible to someday have a list covering every developer of note with brief 10-15 minute videos outlining their history.
I was actually looking for a history of WayForward the other day and can't seem to find any on UA-cam. I know their games aren't your strong suit, but just food for thought that there's a gap in content there and I know you worked with Bozon for some time, so maybe that would help you get some insight.
What a fantastic video, a nice little team you've put together Col!
It's time to du-du-du-du-du-duel
That konami chime with the logo brings me way back
Wonderful to have Sophia around. She's an excellent writer & researcher.
I played Yu-Gi-Oh all the time as a kid. Still have my cards and love the anime. Can't believe I never knew it was made by Konami
great video col! and great job sophia on the script, the video was a treat to watch. did you also prep the gameplay videos?
I would love Colin to talk about the twisted metal series or Sargent heroes. Love those classics!
This dude is why I liked kinda funny. Love your work bro.
Great vid man
You forgot the most important Konami story: Tak Fujii and the 2010 E3 Press Conference
Awesome work Colin
Konami is like the DMX of gaming. Was great back in the day and changed the genre of rap but now a days is a shell of it's self because of constant fuck ups.
Great video!
So true man... Money talks... Sad that we may never see another new Castlevania, gradius and delta force game.
would love to see more brief history's
Hopefully Super Bomberman R and the Arcade and Castlevania Collections are the beginning of a Konami comeback. Great video, but I didn't see my man Goemon. XD
The way the 2 new retro compilations were handled well, plus Super Bomberman R give me hope that Konami isn't completely dead to gamers
Excellent. I love game history videos!
My prayers for a new Suikoden may never be answered...
Super well written and informative, well produced content. I have one question though (and please don't take this the wrong way as it is merely a question): so you aren't writing your own Side Quest episodes now, but then why are you narrating them when they aren't your essays anymore? I've been following all of your content since the IGN days and this IS well made but I just find it a little weird that your voice isn't speaking your actual words, if that makes sense.
How can one learn to write/talk like this? English is not my first language. A lot of people have said to me that reading books will do but is it really the right way?

" A Brief History of Konami -- was researched and written by her. I edited the script, made some additions and subtractions, and massaged it to be my own (as I’ll still be reading all of the VO). But she did the heavy lifting, and she’ll continue to do so moving forward, as Side Quest will be delivered reliably on an every-other-Wednesday schedule moving forward."
Crazy how close Konami and Capcom were as not only the biggest Japanese-based 3rd party publishers in the industry but overall in the 8-Bit & 16-Bit eras, and how far apart they are now!
Caps on next please. Great vid
Woohoo it's back!
Atta boy Colin!
Colin are you still gonna write your own reviews?
Avi p Also really want to know this.
No mention of Snatcher or Policenauts ?
I love stuff like this.
Tiny Toon Adventures was an underrated gem, I feel so attacked 😂
I enjoyed the Genesis version quite a bit.
Back then I knew Konami made good games. It was a good time back then. Currently, I am buying and collecting old Konami classics such as "Hybrid Heaven", etc.. A real shame Konami became a shady company, where greedy coperates run the business and treat everyone else like shit.
Another great video from ya boi, Colin M.
Keep them up 👍🏼
Catch ye later big yin 🏴
Well written & researched piece, Sophia. Great work!
Amazing 💪😁
If it wasnt for konami there would be no metal gear and castlevania which i love but what they did to kojima was so wrong so still but thanx for the cv games from the recent collection and requiem so im bitter.
I'm shocked I went all these years without realizing Konami made the yu gi oh card game
Darnell Thomson I had no idea they made Frogger!
Me gusta tu Channel y videos
I was playing Mega Man X-Treme a few years ago. Still a fun game, but there's a big typo in the introductory narrative (which gets increasingly glaring since each time that you start the game, you had to go through the narrative). I think that it's highly unlikely that the big bad has a secret "lavatory" hidden in the jungle.
I'm just a casual but didn't Gottlieb developed the QBert that you're referring to?
What a great video
Subsidairies? Is that a milk mart in Japan or something?
Who is old enough to remember when it was Kjonami?
Are you ever gonna do your podcast with video also? Would be nice.
He said he'd do it if he can get the patreon to 5,500 patrons. Here's to hoping it happens soon!
Yie ar Kung fu cemented it for me ..on acorn electron. Was crap imagine license conversion but that was more than enough for me.
Gradius and nemesis on msx were extremely memorable gaming moments in my childhood.
Colin, do you think you’ll ever return to making videos on the original CLS channel? Love all your content, but I do miss the weekly dose of political and historical videos. Keep up the great work!
Yie ar kung-fu!!! Woo-doo Woo-doo...
Depressing
Batman Returns NES mediocre? Hell no, it's a fine belt scrolling beat em' up with a fantastic soundtrack. Including the Tiny Toons games as mediocre licensed games also baffles me, not one of the games are bad at all (outside of Cartoon Workshop on NES, but that's hardly a game at all, but more an animation creator limited by the hardware it ran on), all seem to be beloved, and Konami made plenty of them (10 in total, counting Cartoon Workshop).
I thought death standing was coming to PC?
Thats epic af that Konami would make trash employees work security and clean lol at least they didn't fire them. I like this approach.
I think I have enjoyed more Duel Links than Phantom Pain.
ONE
MIRRION
TROOPS
Amazing that this Totem of gaming worldwide just quite making games. Its a huge lost
SUikoden!!!!!
to me konami the company never realized how important their influence was on the gaming industry i mean look at how they treat there most talented developers like hideo kojima and team silent.they just tryed to make a quick buck throwing money at everything with no actual passion or love for their product
they also had the worst press conference ever
E3 2010 was bad, atrocious even, but the race for the worst is tighter than you may think. Don’t forget about Jamie Kennedy and Activision in 2007.
Sophia Narwitz I’m a big fan of “caffeine guy” myself.
O shit hes kicking kinda funnys ass
This was depressing
I think someone forgot abt PES 🤔
Why cant they just release some suikoden games on mobile?
Noice
Best MSX games were Konami games.
do EA next
Gee yare moe
Not Ga lair mo
You mook!!!
Sunset riders nija turtles.
This is a show tho
Plz made it horse tent pegging game

Guys you really should remove "Side Quest" from the title of each video. It makes it less appealing to new people who don't know what that means, and it's literally in your channel title an inch below anyway.
