Supro '64 Super Amp: Yeah, it's good too!

- I just can't stop with the 5 watt tube amps. For playing at home, small gigs, rehearsals, jam sessions, or recording - they're more likely than not all you need!
Supros thing is touch sensitivity and smooth transition from clean to crunch and holy shit this amp absolutely does that. Watch me cackle with delight as I take this pretty little rectangle through it's paces in the RIFFKITCHEN™.

Keith Williams rubs his hands together in a villainous manner-"Another one in my clutches!"
Eric, watching your videos feels like hanging out with a good buddy, talking guitars over a couple beers. Love your content, man!
Thanks Tyler!
That's the idea - the dude you see on YT is the same dude my friends, family, and therapist know :-)
I'm 3 minutes in and this is already one of the best demos I've seen. Great banter and playing
Love how your product demo videos still contain a good number of playing tips and advice (and visa-versa ).
Love your work mate. Your taste in amps = A+. Also, thanks for being the most responsible and realistic demonstrator - big fan of your push for ear protection and attenuation for sensible playing.
Yes! Protect your ears!
You don't want want I've got!
Slightly different tangent, but one knob amp related - have you played the Fender Excelsior? I'd be interested to hear how it sits in your gear spectrum. (I use one and really enjoy it )
Thanks for sharing another great vid! I really appreciate your perspective. 👍 Just picked up the Supro Delta King. Can't wait to get to know it...
Man. Your videos are just plain great. Love watching and listening. Thank you sir.
IDENTITY THEFT IS A CRIME, JIM!
@@EricHaugenGuitar MILLIONS OF FAMILIES ARE AFFECTED EVERY YEAR!
Love Supro's when you see them live up close they are beautiful.Cant go wrong with the classics
Loved your video. Great playing and great review.
Great video Eric! I have the Supro delta king and love the sound and look.
Thanks for sharing simplicity. I was about to get a modeling amp and all that, yes they are good to solve your problems, but simplicity is key for me. This amp, 1 or 2 pedals and you are golden.
Sounds so good! Looks so good 👍🏻👍🏻
Another killer review!!!! What a sound!!!!!!
Haugentone, this amp has it in spades. What a wonderfully reactive combo! How to get the most music from the least amount of gear. Keith Williams would be proud. I suppose a set up like this gives you nowhere to hide. Perfect.
fantastic amp and great advice for the ear plugs - thanks
Another great review- killer sound!!!!
i love supro amps, they’re just absolute beasts, i have a blues king. they were jimmy pages choice for the first 2 zep albums for a reason. the breakup on them is perfect.
Dude you SHOULD be talking to your beloved equipment! It is good energy! Just walk around and point to them all and say "you are the best" and to another "you are also the best" :) Love it! Supro am here is an amazing little guy with a huge voice.
Love your channel...cheers from Ottawa Canada!
that sounded glorious!
Loved the little Heart cameo at the start Eric. Nice!
I LOVE 70s Heart!
Honestly, the 80s stuff too - "Brigade" was one of the first cassettes I ever bought!
@@EricHaugenGuitar My Heart journey started with Dog & Butterfly. I'm officially old!
Love it Eric. You jump through as many different amps as I do, and we have a ton of the same tastes haha my latest squeeze has been an early 90's Vibroverb brownface reissue... rehabbing it with new speakers and grill upon a general servicing I did but it is a vibey amp
Those old Vibroverb reissues are🔥🔥🔥
Had the pleasure of cranking this to max volume during rehearsal and it cut through our mix better then our marshall we had laying around (which is a 100w) it would get too loud if you wanted to be heard and drowns out others. The supro was like an arrow cutting through in all the right places leaving more room for bass and vocals It sounded straight zeppelin 1
eric, i love your videos
Awesome! You just made my first tube amp purchase alot harder. Now do the Supro 5watt 64 Reverb. It looks like it has alot of nice features.
😂 “Protect your ears...” My Tinnitus has gotten better, but I tune into my ringing, and radio static every night when I put my ear plugs in to go to sleep.
I have 25db attenuation cut, custom fit musician plugs. You definitely miss out on some Tone, but you get enough information to be able to sing, and play, which is good enough. I bought mine 16 years ago, and they still work great.
Hello Eric ! Always interested to see you!
👋
The array of Supro 5 Watt amps is terrific!! I've been a big fan for a while now. Have three five watt Supro's , each def a Supro yet every one quite different. The 5 Watt BLues King is a great amp for the cash too and an entirely different vibe. The Keeley is again a whole different amp and darn good. Hope ya try a couple more..... You'll get hooked. Great Vid !!
I was just about to ask the Db loudness and it’s like you read my mind.. in the future 😂
I have a Supro Comet. 15W of glorious tone. If the venue has a good PA I will gig with it and dime it. Sounds fantastic and I e gotten many compliments on my tone after playing a show. And most times the rig is just my Les Paul and Supro. 🤘
Can't be more excited about your talk about ear protection. My ringing is like yours and to explain it to younger players makes me say Hell Yes kids please listen to Eric and protect your ears. The amp sounds gnarly by the way.
It's crazy!
It's just like smoking, wearing a helmet when you ride a motorcycle, or drinking and driving. We all KNOW it's dangerous, but sometimes do it anyway.
Great demo. I was hoping you’d demo the the awesome 64 Reverb, but good stuff.
Really great 5 water is the Tone King Gremlin head 5881 tube If matched with the proper cab can't be beat Built in attenuator too but pricey Great feature of being able to swap several tubes for different flavors and headroom Good demo
So 8 months later but maybe only 20 hours of actual playing the power tranny went south This so concerns me when buying a pricey NEW amp Never after buying/playing amps for over 45 years have I ever had a PT go bad So the big question is if I get the replacement will there be issues a year or 5 maybe 10 down the line I bring this up on this particular post because I was playing my old Supro 52 and after 70 years no PT issues Is the new stuff going to last like the old tried and true stuff This was the first new amp I've bought in 30 years so really concerns me ????
Mr. Haugen, the most unlikely of things here... funny how immeasurable the impact of watching you teach has been as a career musician who grew up in Tualatin. Of the indie era myself, I've rethought my entire rig. Downsized. Back to the essentials is a way to describe it, I suppose. Very healthy for me and my family. I'll soon be on patreon for you and all of our love, brother.
Yeah! For me, it's all about doing the most with the least - it's some kind of minimalist/luddite ethos :-)
Bet that firebird would be sweet with a pro jr.. The seed has been planted. You will become sleeepy.
10/10 playing, subscribed.
Thanks Ross!
Sweet! Subscribed.
Hi Eric. I love your channel (Marc Ribot... Tom Waits and all that...right?). I've been playing a 57' tweed Champ' for years with either a SG junior or a tele with a humbucker in the neck position. Well... I can relate to your enthousiasm :) 5 watts is really all you need (volume, dynamics, resonance, etc). This Supro would be a really good companion. Sounds fab'. Thanx for the "review"!
You nailed the purple haze solo ♥️🤘🏻
Jimi is 4eva the greatest :-)
PSA: It's not only about how loud the audio source is, the intensity is extremely important. dB over space. This Supro in a closet could be more intense than a concert at MSG. When you knock down the little hair cells in your inner ear, over and over again, they'll stop coming back up.
Yes! Good point!
That's why rehearsal rooms are HELL for me now - even with plugs!
I don't know how I lived without an attenuator for so long. The Weber Mini Mass is the best money I've spent in forever. My ears thank you. Supro is so tempting. I've had my eye on those for a while.
if anyone cares: you can use a volume in the fx loop *if you got one*... same thing, if it's passive. i think? LOL
@@christopher-miles It's not exaxtly the same thing because an attenuator happens at the output after both pre and power gain stages. The effects loop does give you some volume control, but you're still not getting all tubes cranked. At least with most amps, I think. It's still beter than nothing. :0)
It's totally true that you lose some top end presence with the attenuator in the loop, but whatevs!
Have/love both the Supro and the Vibro Champ, running them in stereo, they make a great pair.
And If you had to pick one ?? Thanks can’t make up my mind
Sweet little amp and some tasty playing!
Thanks T!
Keith would be so proud of you dude! ;-) The sound is so good, but how about a shoot out with the new Fender Champ?? Another excellent video Eric!
Dammit now I've gotta buy one of those too!
@@EricHaugenGuitar 🤣
@@EricHaugenGuitar yep, you better! Champ vs Supro is a must!
@@EricHaugenGuitar yes and how about using two amps in stereo, wet/dry or dirty/clean setup? Would love to see how to do this.
@@EricHaugenGuitar
You really do. I love them so much I want three.
I picked up the 1606 a few weeks ago. It's the previous version of this amp. I agree with everything in this vid. I'm down with the single knob amps, but you might want to have some EQs or non-transparent boosts handy. I believe this generation of these amps come with a Jensen P8R or similar speaker, which should brighten things up a bit. Sweet little retro amp.
What an absolute monster riff to open with, oldsckool heart is hard to beat
Yes! 70s Heart is so good!
Two inputs and one volume knob: that's It.
Amazing sound! 🎶🎸🔥
That lick you play in the first minute reminds me of billy squire lonely is the night!
Oh i need this amp! Or the Reverb version, these sounds so nice and must be great for recordings!
It's so fat! Even the cleans!
Sounds so much bigger than it looks!
Get the reverb!!
Hilarious! I was looking at this amp too. I used to have a supro supreme and it was cool but I always gravitated back to my deluxe.
Nice demo Eric! I’m looking for a small simple tube combo amp to play with my Gretsch G6122t-59 and a few pedals (Nocturne El Pescadoro and Mystery Brain) Mostly looking to get classic 50s and early 60s sounds. Would this amp be your best suggestion? I’m also considering a Fender Pro Jr and I’m open to other suggestions.
It's hard to say no to a Supro. They're killer. Best looking amps on the market.
Gigged for years just using my Marshall Class 5 and I'm always asked to turn down. Low watts doesn't mean quiet. This thing sound beautiful.
There is a whole world of difference between how an amp sounds cranked (and where you can crank it) vs. using it at bedroom volumes. Small wattage amps narrow the gap - but the funny thing is that I've had many amps and for a master volume amp (which this is not) I tend to put master at the same place and it is about as loud across a 7 watt Orange, 50 watt Laney, or 100 watt Marshall or Laney, to use amps I've had. These 3-5 watt amps give so much more flexibility to get the tubes cooking without annoying the neighbors too much (they will be annoyed, just less).
Also, great demo!
Yeah! I've recorded with those Marshalls - lord have mercy they're loud!
"Some amps are easier to dial than others". As a Mark V owner I understand that very well.
That Supro sounds amazing. Great tone. It's easy to see that you are having lots of fun with it.
P.S.
Eric: "Supro, can I get a discount on that amp?"
Supro: *Sees subscriber count is almost 100k*. "Sure buddy. A few hundred bucks for thousands worth of marketing."
Eric: "What?"
Supro: "What?"
I think it all has to do with the size of the company, and what their exposure already is. Vox and Hiwatt are crazy generous with me and that's awesome - other companies either don't have the margins to give away more, or don't *need* to give away more :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar Oh, just in case, my intention was not to criticize them for not giving you the amp for free. I was just expressing that it doesn't really hurt them to give you a discount because they end up getting good marketing anyways.
I hear ya, man. I only demo stuff that I actually use/like. No shade on my buddies that make a living doing pedal demos - I just couldn't do it. I'd run out of things to say/play :-)
Really enjoying your channel. Lessons are great too. I'm in the market for a new amp and think the 5w mark is probably the realistic option (have been offered a AC15HW which is hugely tempting but just too big physically). The Vibro Champ is probably top of my list but I was considering an AC4 and the Supro too. If you could take only one, would you go Vibro Champ?
I have an AC4hw on the way too (wrings hands expectantly). I *think* the vibro champ offers nice controls & built-in effects, so maybe nudges out the Supro, which has that really magical touch-sensitivity going on
I love lamp! But seriously, good videos to just absorb. Thanks.
hahahaha I ate your chocolate squirrel :-)
Nice video. Having demoed this amp yesterday, I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on one. The only hesitation is whether the 64 Reverb version might be more suitable (mainly because of the master volume rather than the reverb). Have you tried one of these and if so, did you find it different in feel/tonally?
Haven't had the opportunity!
But you are correct, having master volume will make it easier to dial in!
Was Supro out of business for awhile and then relaunched in the 2010’s? I don’t remember seeing them around until recently. I’ve tried a couple, they sound fantastic.
Yeah - I'm not sure what the story is but they're baaaaaack!
5:24 sounds incredible
Great review. I'm looking to pick up a ~5 watt amp for home use and have whittled it down to the vibro champ and supro 64 r. If you had to pick just one of these which would you choose? Is a 10" speaker + tremolo worth it? This supro sounds incredible and your review has made this decision pretty tough :)
oooh the 64R looks like fun - the additional controls mean you'd be able to dial in the sound much easier than on this version.
The vibro champ is cool too, but the cab sounds smaller.
@@EricHaugenGuitar Hey Eric, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was blown away by how big the supro sounded for having an 8" speaker. they did good work on this one. There is definitely something to be said for being able to really dial in your sound, but also something pure about the simpler control scheme.
Fantastic demo. I have the reverb model and it’s OUTSTANDING.
And yes, the tinnitus is no joke. Military service still has mine ringing 30 years later.
Did you add the bigsby yourself or is it standard?
Ooof yeah you know it! We get used to the ringing but maaaan people need to be more careful if possible.
My tele is a 90s CIJ with FACTORY bigsby of all things! No holes in the back!
massive respect for the ear health shout out. you have the best guitar channel on youtube, its gonna blow up.
Yeah I gotta make a video just about that - hearing damage is no joke!
Hello, I have the Supro 1606, and agree it is capable of being very loud indeed! DIY, means ‘Don’t Involve Yourself’ to me, so, can you please provide details of how you connected it to the Weber? Looked like a lot of cables back there!
You need 2 speaker cables and a 1/4 to 1/4 adapter!
It's not terribly tricky, but I walk through it here on insta: instagram.com/tv/CT9k7falOox/?
Great video !! Big dilemma now: Supro '64 Reverb vs Fender Vibro Champ Reverb… what do you think? (Impossible to find them in store in my area…)
oooof hard to say both very good choices that look cute and sounds great you really can't go wrong!
Looking to buy a new amp to upgrade from my Hot Rod Deluxe, & want to hit the sweet spot of character / pedal platform & usable tone at room volume / vs giggable. It would seem from your reviews that the Fender is more what I need, though the Supro is more what I want. Tried any of those new Harmony amps?
Orrrrrrr Fender Princeton Reverb!
Personally, I'm pretty obsessed with those lately.
Hey Eric! This sounds like it nails some Zeppelin tones and doesn't fart out so to speak like the vibro. I have a tele as well and you're tempting me on this!
Oh yeah it barks real good!
@@EricHaugenGuitar Meant to ask I'm downsizing from my deluxe reverb. Every gig is just a mic'd amp and in ears anyways. Would you go vox ac4hw or supro 64 for a tele? Thanks and that's the only question I'll bug you with haha. Thanks so much for you great approach to education and advocating for ear health :)
All these little amps spund great. I hope the Mesa/Gibson deal brings back the Epiphone Valve Junior. Have you played one? Have a great weekend!
Yeah! I've used those epiphones in the studio and they're MEAN little buggers!
If you had to pick one between the Supro 64 and the Vibrochamp reissue - what would you go for? Both are pretty cool....
It all depends on what amps you already have. The vibrochamp is fun because it has controls and effects built in, the but Supro is just a BEAST.
Hi, is this the one with the Jensen speaker or does it have the SS8 speaker? I'm on the fence on which one to get. Your thoughts or opinions? Thanks ✌
Just the stock Jensen!
It sounds surprisingly full for its size!
JAMES GANG.... The 1st few seconds sounded SO James Gang!v
Thanks for the videos. Any chance we can see a comparison between the Supro and the Fender champ? not so much to grade them as to see their differences, cons and pros of each one, using same guitar , rig, ..........
Good idea!
They're similar - but the supro is fatter/fuller. The Vibro champ sounds "smaller" in the room.
crazy nice Shuggie Otis vibes on this, Love it.
PS: I typed this 6 minutes before he even played Shuggie....wow.
Oh God I want one!
If you think Eric's 96k subscribers is a crime, gimme a hell yeah. Though Part of me wants him to stay UA-cam's best kept secret. I will keep the S'ss at bay and protect myself before it's too late. Thanks for the Supro demo, Eric. It sure does look easy to dial in.
I'm with you! I kinda like being a little under-the-radar!
I have all the numbers I need to keep my lesson calendar full, and get nice deals on cool gear - that's all I want!
Eric, would you have paid full rate for it? If not, what other similar amps would you consider?
It really depends on what other amps you have, and what your needs are.
For an all rounder that can do gigs and isn't too much to lug around I really like my Hiwatt T20/10 ($599)
These little amps are great but not necessarily enough power for gigs
How would you say this amp compares to a fender 57 champ. Thanks for continuing to put out great videos.
I'm gonna have to buy one and find out! Haven't had the pleasure of spending time with a 57 champ!
My wife will hate me... but I can see a very compact rig here. Supro 64, phase 90, Poppy dual boost and (your favorite here) analog delay. This thing sounds ridiculously good. Wonder what the high and low inputs would sound like jumped.
Detour should be a PSA, plus a Shuggie Otis mention.
Love 5 watt amps. You should meet Keith Williams of 5 Watt World. When taking lessons in NJ years ago, we used a silverface Champ during lessons.
Keith Williams 5 watt world
Oh yeah I know Keith! We did a collab for his "History of Fender Mustangs" vid :-)
How does a p90 jr sound with the supro? Given the choice which one do you prefer? Only have 1 guitar,a junior, the other amp is 68 fender amp you demoed .Thanks, the amp choice will be the only amp I will have lol
hrmmm with the beefiness of the p90 jr I actually think the Vibro Champ is the way to go.

I really need this sound in my life. Just wonder which version you have here. Does it have a supro or jenson speaker in it?
It's got the Jensen!
This is going to seem like a stupid question, but please bear with me: how do you run this through an attenuator? I am very interested in getting one of these, but live in a mid-terrace house (with neighbours on each side). I want to be able to push the amp so I am saturating/overdriving more than just the pre-amp valve. But I don't want to anger my neighbours (or wife). Any guidance on how to connect the attenuator is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
I talk about it a bit more in this vid:

Just bought one of these. Did you have to open the thing up completely to connect the attenuator?
I think you figured it out John! It's a little crowded in the back of the amp, but you can get to the output jack and wire up the attenuator :-)
Dude, forget the amp... You seem like a genuinely good person. Appreciate your thoughts on the amp and passion for music. Keep it going!!!
