I keep coming back to neck tension and bullet seating/measuring. Get the Redding body/shoulder bump die and the Lee Collet/Mandrel neck sizing die. This should give more consistent bullet seating pressure than other neck sizing methods. (Use whatever method gives the most consistent bullet seating pressure.) Please chamfer inside the necks by hand with a VLD chamfer tool such as the wooden-handled Lyman. If the bullet is scratched during seating, accuracy will diminish. For bullet measurement, just measure the bullet base-to-ogive for consistency. For bullet seating, use the Forster Competition Seater die, and seat to 10 thou longer than final seating depth. Use the Lee Dead Length Bullet Seater die for the last 10 thou. Then measure loaded cartridge base-to-ogive length for consistency. This will give you an indication of the consistency of the shaping of the bullet from the caliber diameter of the lands (the spot where you get your base-to-ogive measurement) to the diameter of the bullet at the seater die stem. The seater die stem diameter is inferred from the loaded cartridge base-to-ogive measurement. And the consistency of the shape of the ogive is equal to the consistency of the difference between the bullet BTO and the loaded cartridge BTO. If the bullet ogive's shape is perfectly consistent, the bullet BTO and the loaded cartridge BTO will each have the exact same variation (extreme spread of the respective measurements). You are thereby comparing the bullet's base-to-ogive length with the bullet's base-to-seater stem length. Since the seater stem makes contact with the bullet much closer to the tip than does the base-to-ogive measuring tool, you will be checking the consistency of the curve along the ogive between the lands diameter (where the BTO measurement is made) and the seater stem diameter much closer to the tip (where the seater stem presses against the bullet).
If you feel that the Lee Dead Length Bullet seater is not necessary, compare the loaded cartridge BTO consistency using just the Forster (or any other) Seater die and the Lee Dead Length Bullet seater die. Use whichever is most consistent.

Hello. I have been get great results from the Hornady A-Tip 135 gr in 6.5x55.
I have an old all original m96 Swedish Mauser in real good condition. With original 29.1 in barrel. The optics I use on it is a Vortex LR 2x7. I am getting .347in 4 shot group at 100 yards. I am loading 44 grains of IMR 4350. And seating at 3.15 inches. I did try other loads at 42.5 grains and working up. Muzzle velocity is averaging 2775 deviation is minimal.

Awesome. I have 2 different Swedes a 700 Classic and Thompson center Encore with a 26” barrel the 130eld-m bullets are at 3050fps with 6.5 StaBall with no pressure signs with a .365” group. The newer actions really wake the Swede up.

Im really excited on these A-Tips. I want to get some to compare my 140 ELD's at 2,000 Yards to see how well they will hold up at ELR. I've seen many post images on Instagram with these bullets, however the tips are deformed from using the wrong profile seating stems. There's a company in Nor Cal that can laser scan and build carbide tooling to match. So im hoping to use them to make my own seating stems when I try this bullet as well as make bullet cherries to make my own cast bullet molds. As always, information was spot on and a great review!

I shoot the same bullet, Lapua brass small primer, CCI small rifle primer and am working the load now. At 41.5 grains H4350 also getting .4 to .5". Have not even started the seating depth development yet. I am confident once I get that down I will be looking at .25". This is out af a stock Remington 700 PCR in 6.5 Creedmoor. These are the best bullets and if your into precision shooting, worth the price.

What a thorough test. Great explanation of loading procedure, component selection, and documented result. I have never seen better. A-Tip @ .70 per projectile will not be happening. I don't care how they market or package them. If shooting ELR, I get it. Difference to me is about 1/2 MOA.

What is the coefficient of thermal expansion for copper, alu, and lead, and how much affected your finger heat the overall lenght ?. What you show when using the micrometer is that your are taking measurement without using the ratchet, but with feel alone, how much variation there is on your ability to measure the same every time?

Ooh, finally getting around to these. I have this odd feeling you've had these lined up while I was pestering you about them, and you just chuckled in the background. I've tried the heavier(153?) 6.5s, and the 230 .308s for a subsonic load, and both went into just over half moa, mirroring your experience, also out of factory barreled actions. And that was with about the smae abbreviated load developement you went through. I'm not even sure if going all anal with it will make it appreciably more accurate, these groups are a good chunk better than anything I've seen out of these rifles, and I'm not sure how much better, if at all, it can get.

Curious do the 153gn A-Tips stabilise in the standard 1-8" twist in 6.5 Creedmoor?
I've only just bought a 6.5 Creedmoor and the 147gn ELD-M shot 5 shots into 0.8 MOA without any development. They're amazingly cheap on special too.

@@paultull7406 Yes, they did. I tried them out of a 20" Sauer(did as well as usual from that rifle, about .75moa consistently, best was .68) but the longer barrels seemed to work out better, like the 24" Tikka CTR and Savage 10T.

I am not a extreme reloader or marksman, but i was having a little problem with groups some of the solid bullets in my gun tried a boxes of 750 grain a tips and 50 bmg powder and problems solved with the first lot @ 2.5 inch groups at 500 yards. stopped there, for two reasons one cost and second if its not broke dont fix it!

I also have a Tikka Tac A1 and constantly shoot quarter Moa groupings with 147 ELDM. In the best days I also shot 0.15, 0.18 moa with the same 147 eldm at 100m.
Under 0.5 moa at 300m and 0.7-0.8 moa at 800m

Not sure if I missed this or not but I looked at your web site as well and did not see what die sets you are using for the 6.5 135gr A-Tip Creedmoor and the final powder and load you are using. I have a custom built rifle for F-Class that I will be using these bullets for. I have already purchased a few Hornady loading manuals and unfortunately the 135 gr isn't covered. I could just use data from one lower and one upper weight and go lite.
I am a little concerned about using custom dies since I have heard people say the A-Tips are coming apart in flight or blowing apart in the barrels. May be related to a heavy load or maybe upsetting the A-Tip with a seating die not designed for the A-Tip?

Hornady are known for unexplained flyers. Now that you've "found" your load shoot a 25 shot group in 22 minutes @ 300 yards. If these bullets are as good as Berger or custom then it will show on paper.

I could only get these bullets 2 months ago. I order from Hodgdon 2 days ago a 8lb container of powder made by Accurate (A4350). That's all that they had available. My Hornady 10th edition handbook of reloading does not have this bullet listed under the 6.5 Creedmoor section. On Hodgdon's site for their reloading data, I selected the 135gr bullet and there are 3 choices for powder. Hodgdon, IMR, and Winchester. There is no Accurate listed to select. On Accurate's site I could not find reload data for this powder (A4350) for the 6.5 Creedmoor. I have watch you reviews 3 years ago about reloading press and today I came across this one today. For the last 2 days I have searched and can not find the data I need. I even downloaded the Western powders reload data and no luck there. So do you know how many grains I should use for this bullet that will be going into the Winchester 6.5 Creedmoor brass. I hate to put you in a situation where it is not good to give advice to other people but with you being into numbers and statistics I figured you could steer im in the right direction. I will be calling Hornady after the powder arrives to ask why this bullet is not listed. Thanks to you or any one else that might help. Oh by the way, I'm a beginner at reloading so am I correct in assuming that the more grains of bullet equals less powder?

@@GianniG55 For me the Key to the Satterlee load test is a rifle, powder, case, primer, bullet combo that can achieve less than 5 FPS SD. I believe I saw this in the Satterlee video that was done with 6.5 guys. If you do not have the proper combination it will not work. I have shot 5 shot groups through the entire range of charges and used the average of each group to verify results. I can't afford the rifles those guys use as they are custom match rifles. Although it appears the Ruger Precision Rifle does an adequate job.

Spike Sefcovic hi, I’ve seen the video too but There wasn’t enough information or demonstration looking at those ChronoGraph speeds showing only three results didn’t prove an awful lot to me what we really needed to see was low ES as well as a tiny group with what ever seating depths he managed to settle on as I’m sure you are aware you can have a tiny group with crap Es and great Es but a rubbish group, but yes your dead right the whole combo needs to work together, and then it also comes down to how well the person behind the trigger shoots when testing that ammunition.

.55 is a good group. I'm shooting 6 and seven shot groups with 143 grain eldx into a 5/8 sometimes half inch groups with a savage model 12fv in 6.5 creedmoor. Cant wait to try these when hornady starts loading them. How fast are they coming out of your barrel?

my tightest group with the 230 eldx has been 1 1/4" at 100 thanking bout trying them at 200yds just to see if they need room to calm down ? factory ammo 225 superformance shoots 3/4"-7/8" at 100 and 1.5"-1.3/4" at 200 ive tried 225 accubond 230 eldx to no avail did get the noslers to 7/8" then run exact same load again and got 1 1/4" go figure now im gonna try 250 gr. grand slams and 210 ttsx ive got loaded well see. my rifle is a winchester xpr 26" skinny barrel .

I wonder if it was done on purpose. Basically to clean up the area around the bolt handle when in battery. Not the the handle would hit the mount, but so when we works the bolt, it provides more empty space around the handle. The nut on that mount look decently large. Watch him manipulate the bolt when shooting.

MidSouth has Monster Match bullets that are actually Nosler Custom Comps. Give them a try! I am getting similar groups as your ATIPs in my 6.5 RPR. Using Starline Brass so my STD Dev and ES aren’t as good as yours with Lapua, but still low 10’s for both.

there are a few pretty good bullets for 270. Hornady 145 eldx, and sierra 140 gamechanger. I think nosler makes an ABLR too. All over 500 BC. Not great, but much improved over the older traditional hunting bullets. I load the 145 eldx with RE26 in a 24in barrel and hit 3040fps.

Those heavy bullets need 1:7 and end up dropping and drifting more than 130-140 in cm. Just stick with 130-140 you can do more with them. At all ranges.

@@MrT13 my 1:8 twist shoots sub half minute groups. They stabelize out to at least 1k. I have done it. I would love to see someone else replicate it too! I have them going 2650 fps with reloader 16. Lethal out to 700 yards depending on the conditions. At 4500 ele. 30 - 90 deg. And 30% (ish...) humidity the perform flawlessly.

If the tip is worth 5gr then the 153 ATip is modeled after a 147 eldM and 135ATip is a 130gr eldM. Soooooo Hornaday where is the ATip from the 140gr eldM.

I loaded the A-Tip 153 grain, in 6.5-284. I like them, but they didn’t shoot as tight as the ELD Match 140 in my Savage Model 12 LRPV. Given that the ELD Match bullets cost considerably less, I think it’s a no-brainer as to which bullet I’ll keep loading.

But when multi million dollar company puts even more millions into load development an then feels confident enough to say it's the best they've ever made up to this point they tend to mean it. Why go through all the trouble if a less superior round beats it? Not that the eld are bad in any way shape or form but why would Hornady do this for no reason?

@@noluckpureskill9985 I'm not saying the A-Tip is an inferior or lesser bullet. I'm simply saying the ELD performs better in my rifle. I"m sure Hornady spent a lot of time and resources developing what is clearly a ground-breaking bullet. What I am saying, is I pay about $33 dollars for a box of ELDs. A box of A-Tips costs $79. At that difference, it is not economically feasible for me to do as much extensive testing with the A-Tips. Truth be told, I could probably get the same or better results with the A-Tip, but the cost is too prohibitive for me. Current, the ELDs are shoot sub half MOA. Sub half MOA at $33? I'm happy.

Great video! Can you clear something up for me? You're using H4350 and with a 42.6 grain load you only got 2,704 FPS? Am I reading that right? I'm loading 140grn ELD-M's with 41.3 grains of H4350 and getting 2,745 FPS. Just curious as to whether this bullet is that slow?

Depends on many factors concerning internal ballistics. I shoot 162 eld-m out of my 7mm-08 with about 43gr of H4350. My barrel length is 22", Hodgdon says my bullet should only be going about 2500-2550. Hornady says my bullet should only be going 2500. Both test barrels were 24". I have about 700 rounds through my barrel. My load runs at 2622. I'm in what some would call the "hump" of the barrel. The point where the bullet is travelling faster out of the barrel than it normally should. As I run more ammo through the barrel, that fps should drop a bit and stabilize. Also depends on your barrel break in procedure. I used a copper equilibrium procedure that normalizes copper build up to make a more consistent bore between 50-150 rounds. Once i pass that point, my accuracy tends to drop and I have to do a full copper removal. TLDR; internal ballistics will affect your bullet fps.

On top of what Michael Houde pointed out , there are many many other factors that will determine your velocity vs charge weight, Things like the brass that you are using, neck tension you are running, the primers that you are using, the jump (or jam) that you are using, the elevation you are shooting at and so one all come into play. For example, I use Lapua Brass and shoot the 147gn ELD-M's and all things equal other than primers (using CCI BR4's and 450), I get amount 15fps faster average speeds with the BR4's over the 450's (plus better SD's and ES's but we're just talking MV here). Furthermore to show how there are many variables that come into play, your load that you mentioned is almost identical to mine (I load H4350 for my 6.5cm to 41.4gn) and with me shooting 7gn heavier projectiles and only 0.1gn more powder, you're only about 20fps faster.
Also, since its the same name, I'm assuming that you are the guy with the review on MidSouth's website and mentioned about the twist rate. It sounds like you do not understand what twist rate "Minimum" actually means. The "Minimum" actually means slowest twist rate, not the lowest number in the 1:__" dimension. A larger inch dimensions means slower, so below "minimum" where as a lower inch number means faster so above "minimum". Thus a 1:8 is above the minimum as it is faster than a 1:8.5. Remember, the minimum rate means the slowest spin. The shorter the ratio number, the faster the spin. If you want to look at it from an actual mathematical sense, 1/8.5=.117 where as 1/8=.125. As we can see, the 8.5 is lower (i.e. that number is the lowest you want to go based on Hornady's recommendation).

I wrote that comment before I really understood reloading, but I now understand much better having reloaded several thousand rounds and taking into consideration all the factors you pointed out. I don't thing that was me on the Midsouth comments as I don't remember posting there, but who knows...Maybe it was late one night! I've been running Reloder 16 since I couldn't find H4350 for a while, but just got hold of 24 lbs so am switching back to H4350 when I mount my new barrel next month. I did misstate my bullet weight in the post above and am running ELD-M 147 gr same as you. In my new loads I run Alpha brass, CCI 450 primers and 41.1 gr of H4350, .040 off the lands and double mandrelled, which gives me ~2,777 FPS, an SD of 3.87 and an ES of 11.00 which I'm happy with. He has bullet weight of 135 grains and the speed of 2704 fps but not sure about the .04 off lands...Maybe he did a lands test before and just didn't include? I'm not going to A-Tips because of price and I don't see the benefit at my level of shooting (if I was competing at a higher level and they were giving them to me like they do those guys then yes, but paying for them myself, the ROI just isn't there).
