Usually, when you see something like that on a tire it's on a truck that's been overloaded and smashed a pothole or something like that. Most times it will be bulged on both sidewalls tho. Basically, some impact snapped one or more of the belts that are holding the tire together. Can also result in a blowout, and nobody wants that!
It's not damaged by hitting anything, it only the unstretched inner lining releasing a small amount of air into the outer casing, just make pearce a small hole in the outer casing to release the air and it will return to normal. It's the cords that provide the strength to the tire, the casing is only there to provide a wearing surface and to protect the cords. Look up Lithgow grey tyre marking on internet.
Oh my - I've heard of a tyre bulge as something to watch out for but never seen any example, I guess I thought by now it was one of those things from a bygone era. That's really pronounced! I certainly wouldn't like to drive with that. Well done spotting it. And thanks for sharing this education.

I once saw a video of how tires were made (in the US) and it was very eye opening how they found foreign objects embedded in the steel belts. They even found eating utensils in there!

Weakens the tire where impacted causing the bubble. Occasionally it is a manufacture defect but almost always its caused by an impact. Seen that many times. It's often caused by hitting a pothole, and pinching the sidewall/crown of the tire. A tear forms inside the plies of the sidewall, allowing it to bulge. Left alone, it can/does blow out, and you would be correct that it needs replacement ASAP.
Internal tread/sidewall ply separation is my opinion. From the photos I couldn't see an out-of-round or deformed cross section as I would expect from broken belts as others have described. When belts break the entire cross section of the tire changes and you'll often see a spot on the tire go "bald" as the high spot hits the ground harder on every rotation. As anyone that takes care of tires knows, all tires lose pressure over time, no tire/wheel combination is airtight. The only part of any tire that is specifically designed to hold air is the liner. While the other parts of the tire may hold some air (carcass, belts, tread, etc) it is the liner that keeps the tire from going flat. It is possible there is a leak in that area in the liner and has leaked a small amount of air from day one from the inside. I'm not saying it shouldn't be replaced, but it's also probably not on the verge of blowing out either. I saw one of these bulges on a car in front of me I was following one day when I was stationed in Germany. After getting the guy to pull over, I had a heck of a time explaining it and showing it to him by the side of the road. I didn't speak German well enough to use technical tire terms and of course, the bulge was not visible when he stopped. I finally pantomimed enough to get him to roll a little then stop so he could see it.
Happened to my civic 2018. It happens when there is a strong impact force, usually hitting the curb or if the road elevation changes suddenly, like a pothole.
My brother bought four new tires at a Thrift sale for $100 they were supposed to be ground up at Uniroyal the guy took them home at night there were bad belts on everyone he had them mounted on his Buick it had a slow rock and roll at 30 miles an hour hahaha nice tires!

In Atlanta they call those t*tties, don't know why. Not nice to look at on a tire. Rather call it a tumor or blister like you said. Could be from a pothole, railroad crossing, curb. You see it a lot if a tire is ridden very low, then aired up. Whole side wall is ridden with these lumps.
@@megajam5286 Oh, that was kind of interesting. I drove with it like that for over a year (maybe closer to a year and a half). I just kept an eye on it and it didn't change at all. Then, one time I had to park the car for about a week while I was in the hospital. Soon after that the tire developed a small leak so I took it in to replace it. The mechanic told me the edge of the bubble grew slightly toward the tire bead seal and that was causing a slow leak. Overall, I think it is a good idea to change your tire once you see a bubble. That said however, if the owner is tight on money and the bubble is pretty small and unchanging, then I think you can get by just waiting for little while.
It seems that two of my cars have that sort of bulge but not as bad as that one or big. The tires are all bought less than 1 year ago. I took it to the tire shop (America’s Tire) and they said it was normal and ok to keep driving on. I take good care of my cars and make sure the tire pressures are all at spec but I do live in CA where we pay the most in taxes and have the worst roads.
It could also be that it was a badly manufactured tire. When I bought my Ford van it had CONTINENTAL tires, each one develop that air bulge separation. I will never buy that brand tire!!!

Good catch indeed. I do have a question for you. In your professional opinion would you replace front rotors or is it ok to have them turned? I have a 2015 Tundra V8 iforce crewmax with 80,000 miles and do tow a camper ever so often. I forgot to turn the brake controller on and made a few stops with out the trailer brakes and this did a small warping on my front rotors.
Just replace my brakes on my 2011 tundra do the pads and rotors both at the same time for the money and safety smart thing to do. You think like me and i asked around good question.

You can do this by "kissing" a curb; pinching the tire between rock and rim (don't ask me how i know). Usually this happens on the outside of the tire, not the inside.
Good catch. You may have saved the owner a blowout on the highway. Maybe you can source the owner a used tire or put the spare on for them so they can drive straight to the tire shop. We know that one is very unsafe.
These impact bruises are a lot more common on the low profile tires with little room to absorb the impacts without pinching the sidewalls. If you drive much at speed on dirt, gravel or potholed roads and get a bruise bubble on one tire it is best to replace all four tires and slow down as the other tires are not trustworthy either. Blow outs are no joke on the freeways.
It appears they might have run over a brick or 2x4 piece of wood or a shallow pothole at above 40 mph.a bigger pothole or debris would probably cause a blowout.high cost name brand tires are better at handling impacts.So the cheaper the tire the faster it wears out and the more damage it incurs when hitting debris.Buy the best you can afford if you commute on the highway,that's my recommendation.
Looks like a broken belt for sure. The second tire you that you showed the tread, doesn't look any better then the tire with the bulge. I hope they don't just replace that one 😫 tire, it's best for the transmission to run 4 new tires.
We call this a "separation" in the tyre business . Mostly caused by driving on and of the curbstone. If driving at high speed it can cause a "blow out". So replace immediately and warn the customer not to ride on an of curbstones anymore
I once made the mistake of allowing my wife to buy a car with low-profile tires. She immediately started bending rims and ruining tires from potholes. Very often a bend in the rim would include a ruined tire with a matching blister in the sidewall just like this. Now I insist that all our vehicles have HIGH profile tires!
that is called tire separation! not good at all look at my current video i just purchased a brand new crosswind HT tire for 1995 ford dually diesel it's a 10-ply tire anyways it's brand new not even a hundred miles not even 50 miles on the tire purchase yesterday and i noticed it has a bulge on the sidewall very dangerous!
Cheap tires. Most likely made in China. Tires made in the USA and Canada hold up much longer. Also, check the manufacture date code on each tire. If they all have close dates, it may be wise to replace with a full set of tires, verses just replacing one tire.

30 PSI? That's on the low side for such a small tire. 39psi would be perfect and would compensate for extra passangers so the sidewalls won't sag so much. When 30psi tires hit a pothole the tire loom stretches and it's tencil strength looses integrity

I had to replace 2 tires on my new KIA because my daughter hit 2 large pot holes that damaged the steel belt causing a bulge like that.
I had the same thing in the rear side wall the steel belts broke. Never lost any tire pressure but the car would ride with a stupid wobble.

Air gets between the plys and causes a bubble have had it happen several times on older tires. Most often it is felt while driving as a wiggle.

I've had a sidewall bubble like this for about a year now with many miles driven on it. It hasn't grown any larger. I'm not too worried about it.

Bulge. A blister is on the tread surface, when it pushes up but leaves the belt intact. Not very common on a street tire

Toyota sequoia 2006 year light come on check engine vsc trac vsc off ....
I am no expert but I think it happens with potholes and I mean severe potholes or going off a curb.
