I work for one of the power tool manufacturers. Years ago we were testing a 30kg prototype breaker on sites across London; after 20 minutes breaking every groundworker said they liked it but wanted the power cable to be orange or yellow not black. Why? Because otherwise it was too easy to cut through the cable by accident. If they cut the cable they couldn’t use tool, had to get cable changed, PAT testing etc so best case they didn’t have that breaker for a week. That’s why all the Hilti 110V breakers now have detachable power cables. The best ideas come from listening to those that use the tools day in day out ❤

massive respect to roger for standing up for that plumber. that show would have tore him to shreads and destroyed his reputation. his career would be over all because he felt sorry for the woman and tried to keep her heating going. fair play roger. a man of integrity

I'm a recently retired JIB GOLD CARD APPROVED industrial electrician of 50 years and you will never attract apprentices especially for big companies who have sacked all their paye employees and force them to work through agencies with no overtime pay , no holiday pay no sick pay, so why the he'll would you want to go into construction, these big firms have used unskilled workers instead of apprentices, basically the clients, members of Parliament and in cahoots with union bosses have deskilled the industry and health and safety has set up their own industry by screwing every penny out of workers with meaningless courses that you have to pay a fortune for, or you work for small employers who make you graft non stop for 40 hours a week for wages well below JIB rates and they send out kids onto jobs where they are working amongst the general public and around live equipment and they haven't even passed their exams to be a sparks putting their lives at stake and the general public, I think I worked in the industry in the best decades in the 70s 80s and 90s, I wouldn't touch the industry with a bargepole now

Retired like yourself, Approved gold card, Doesn't really mean anything anymore. I watched as Eastern block immigrants were given JIB cards like confetti- no qualifications asked for.
I worked commercial, abroad and in the UK. Had as many as 60 sparks under me. All good tradesmen, destroyed by the influx of eastern block immigrants. When I retired, I was earning less than 30 years prior. Most of the "Agencies" are owned by the very same electrical companies you speak of. I would not recommend anyone to go into the commercial side of electrical work. You will be constantly ripped off. By the "JIB" Companies and Agencies. We are both better off out of it.

All started under John Major, then Blair used training and qualification courses as a job creation scheme. A layer of people telling people how to do their job. Not only that you have to retake the courses every so often so the gravy train keeps running.

Hello. I gave up being self employed after years and years because of customers. In the end I had one that used a MOOD BOARD !!! and would stand just behind the front door, which I had a key to, and say “ can we have a chat about the job” again and again. I had done the bathroom next door so they had seen my work and the way I looked after the customers property etc etc. Two very different customers !!! I cried on the way to and during that job so many times and quit near the end of it, which was something I had not done before. Told my stepson ( who was working for me at the time ) that he could have the business, and got myself a job as a maintenance man for a hotel !!! Thankyou for talking about crying. Is something most men do not admit to or talk about. Self employment is very very lonely and the weight of the world is on your shoulders alot of it. The laughter is a tonic !!!
    All my very best
    Martin
(65 and only 50 weeks before getting my pension !!)

Yep spot on we hear about rogue customers and landlords. But I have seen just as much rogue customers and tenants. With rouge customers I am lucky enough to suss them out and bail out early as I just don't need the hassle.
I'm a 65 year old approved electrician in Scotland where Part P is not allowed . I had to get 4 O-levels to get a job interview serve 4 years apprenticeship but no grade card unless I passed my C&G qualifications. Had to serve a further 2 years to get my approved grade along with having to sit my C&G every time the regs changed .

I have a fine art BA (hons) degree, a masters degree in digital design and programming. I took this path because my electrician father wanted something 'better' for me, as well as the fact I enjoyed design. I attended secondary school in the 80's and can see why my father thought university was 'bettering' myself and/or being 'better' than him. The society around him was telling him so. In truth had I trained to be an electrician my career path would have probably been more direct and more lucrative. At the age of 51, after partially completing the fit out of a house extension, with the help of skill builder, I am seriously considering retraining with a trade. Being a tradesperson, builder, electrician, plumber etc, takes intelligence, skill, and ingenuity. Trades are very underrated. I wish my deceased father had understood the value of his work, his ability, and intelligence.

I guess the issue is funding. Will be quite a large cost to set up, and wont be finded by TV adverts or whatever.
So I'm thinking trade bodies or those places/websites that have a business based on recommending good traders.

    Great Pod Gents. Subbed.
On a side note, I'm a fan of Rogers channel and have subbed/watched for a long time. Occaisionally I'll leave comments and only once did I leave a negative comment. It was about some pointing that was not good. The comment was deleted and I'm still a tad miffed by that because not all negative comments are Trolls. With 45 years of experience as a bricklayer I feel I am entitled to an opinion on my trade, good or bad.
Now, if your guests could just come up with a tool to make my job easier, that'd be great thanks -)

We are in the same position as Germany in the late 70s all the young people have been conned into further education when the vast majority won’t complete the course or will have no job at the end of it we have lowered the prestige of being a tradesman we have went with the easy option and brought in foreign labour train our youth up with “real” apprenticeships

There is way too much snobbery in British culture, until we accept that universities are the pilot lights that keep the us an advanced nation capable of paying decent salaries, if it wanted too, it is engineering and the trades that turn that light into a boiler… well they would do if our businesses were run by professionals rather than a bunch of over confident public school boys promoted way beyond their competence.
We should respect people doing their job well…. Rather than their salary or swagger
