If anyone is wondering why there are only men in the boats, this form of dragon boat racing is for men only according to ancient tradition, which believes that women represent wind and wind cannot be on top of a dragon. Many modern forms of dragon boat racing (such as the Asian Games) are open to all genders, but the dragon boat race I watched in this video still follows the ancient traditions down to the last detail, hence, men only. What do you think? Is it more important to stick to the traditions or update to fit the values of modern society? 🐲
Different Dragon Boat Festival tradition. We don't like GuangDong dragon boat because all GuangDong Dragon boat is only care about speed. Hangzhou Dragon boat cares different things, like music, water coming through the dragon mouth and lots of traditions since Ming Dynasty.
Fantastic 🚢 shows. The participants and audiences young and old have so much excitement written all over their face and Kat.😂 Penang(Malaysia) hold similar events annually.
Thank you very much Katherine for this spectacular video. Dragon boat race is really fantastic and unique and above all a great moment of joy for all people of all ages. 💕🌷⚘️🪻
There are very similar races conducted annually in the southern parts of the state of Kerala in India. It is called "Vallam Kali" in the regional language, Malayalam. Likely migrated from China via trade connections in the medieval times via South East Asia.
Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival is the largest with competitors from around the world taking part. If you have the time that is the one to go to. In my younger days I competed two years in a row in Toronto Canada to try and win a spot to go to Hong Kong's competition. One of the best times ever!
We hold dragon boat races here in Kota Kinabalu city every year. For this competition it is about speed, and yes there are international teams from Asia, south east Asia and Australia. It was held the same time you saw yours.
What a very different race. I haven't actually seen a dragon boat race since I was in one back long before you were born. (1972/3) On that occasion, a lot of alcohol was imbibed and I actually rowed myself right out of the boat. Needless to say, we didn't win. I like dhit race (performance) though, it looked really good.
Great to see more chill dragon boat performance, compared to pure strenght rowing competition elsewhere. If you like to see people falling from the boat, you should watch Joutes Provençales in southern France 😂
I live in Canada and we got this too. It is more athletic and less party, quite popular with the cancer survivors who like to take it up as a sport, but the waters are much more calm and the crowds not so big. Many times the team members are from the Chinese diaspora, but it is open to all and gaining popularity as a water sport. I think the modern versions are good and appealing to the younger, sporting demographic, but I do like that these boats have more prominent dragon faces.
Next Tuesday, there will be another dragon boat festival ceremony in Xianlin town Yuhang district. You can come then if you interested. And we call that small Dragon boat festival. The scale of that is same as it is in your video footage. Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important festival in hangzhou especially in YuHang, no matter how busy you are or how rich you are, or how far you are, at that time you have to return home for that day and performance in Dragon Boat race to honor the clan. And only Yuhang District has the Dragon Boat performance competition. By the way, I went to participate in that performance when I was only 10 years old. And I played going at that time.
They even used to have dragon boat races in my neck of the woods, in a lake on the Dutch German border. Those races were very much about who was the fastest though ....
this comment needs a community note. duanwu festival existed way before Quyuan, yes people at state of Chu honored quyuan on Duanwu by throwing Zongzi (a type of food) into the Yangzi river, thus both events kind merged together into one over time. but the origin of Duanwu, and Dragon boat racing festivals has nothing to do with Quyuan
The dragon boat is definitely associated with Quyuan. Now, there are some who want to deny it because they don't like certain festivals of Chinese origin, just like wanting to change Chinese New Year to Lunar New Year.
Some people here said the dragon boat race is to honour Qu Yuan, some people here dispute that. To find common ground I think everybody here can settle that the dragon boat race from now on is to honour Karl Marx and Joseph Stalin. After all Mao said Joseph Stalin is the benevolent father of the Chinese people and when Stalin died some people in Beijing were made to kneel before the portrait of Stalin. This is because the current regime traces its origin as a Soviet puppet state in the 1930s called the 'Republic of Soviet China' (中華蘇唯埃共和國). This is why the five star flag closely resembles the Soviet Union flag. To remember this history it is only appropriate to dedicate the dragon boat racing to Marx and Stalin.
They have zhongzi during this festival , have you tried it? It's a rice dumpling with meat filling, for those who don't know. Thanks for sharing the vid.
Next year, go to the ones in Guangdong where the teams can do corners in the canals by drifting ... speed is more exciting. Also, where is the realgar?
There isn't a concerted effort to exclude women from taking part in dragon boats race, but due to the physical level required, it's not easy to assemble an all female team to compete with men, or enough women to race among themselves, that said, you do see some women taking part albeit very rare. Interesting video, and topical, so thanks for posting.👍👏
San Francisco Bay Area has had dragon boat competition for years. Don’t remember how they score things though. Come visit the chinese communities in the bay area. Nowhere as cool as your village but interesting nontheless
Dragon boat race is a form of reenactment of local people searching river for great Chinese poet Qu Yuan. Upon learning Qin army breached his home state Chu's capital, in exiled Lord Qu Yuan committed suicide by sinking himself into Mi Luo river. This happened during the seven states' struggle to unite China. 57 years after Qu Yuan's death, Qin came out on top and united China in 221BC.
This Dragon boat celebration is not to honor the dragon 0:15 , An ancient minister name Qu Yuan from Zhou Dynasty (340 - 278BC) who's been loyal & honest to the dynasty, but cast away by slander of other jealous minister. Qu Yuan drown himself at Miluo river as a protest to the corrupt government. When the people find out, they tried to search the remain of Qu Yuan with boat and to prevent fish eating Qu Yuan body, people throwing Zongzi 粽子 to the river. Have you try Zongzi, Kath ? 😊
When you see the scene in the window, you became the scene of your lover under the window.
My son was on a dragon boat team for so long, and now that he is going to college, he says he may join up again. it's a nice way to meet other asian students. (he is a hybrid filipino/american) I was surprised that there is a dragon boat team in just about every state in the US. we are in Arizona
These dragon boats are different. Instead of slick and long, these are short and fat, like chubby babies. They also ride so low to the waterline that it is easy to sink. The paddlers don't look like they are in shape. Saying all that, it is still fun.
I think sticking to tradition is more important
stick to the tradition, why not.
After 17 years in China, I finally got to be in a race! Great experience as a drummer in Shekou, Shenzhen.
awesome
@@bellJake I'm from the States, but I'm feeling better! 😜
Drummer is the most important memember of the dragon boat race. he needs to control the rhythem and momentum. he is the soul of the team..
You got to see the dragon boat races in GUANGDONG province. It's another level.
When they say Guang Dong drift, it's not about cars, they drift dragon boats there...
ProjectD(Dragon)😂

As a cantonese person, what is this dragon boat racing that I'm watching. haha.
Guangdong dragon boat rovers are bumped, powerful and in sync!!!

Beautiful scenery and a very informative video.
Funny, hilarious and joyful
Very exciting event. Hope you like sticky rice as well. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic 🚢 shows. The participants and audiences young and old have so much excitement written all over their face and Kat.😂
Penang(Malaysia) hold similar events annually.
Fabulous video, also love your Chinese and how you interact with these Wonderful people
Looks pink to me 😅 Thanks for sharing all these spots you visit 🤩
I'm still yet to see Dragonboat racing in China, one day!
It's clearly red!
@@Hystericall my mistake 😅

China always seemed to have a holiday or festival when I lived there 🎉 Roll on next year 💪
Quite unigue style of Dragon Boats!👌🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Very interesting, they are having so much fun, in China there are so many interesting festivals, including the Mid Autumn, I love it the most ❤🥰

A very good video indeed; thank you Katherine. Just wondering - any "all-girl" rowing teams in these races? It's about time, right?
There are womens teams for many speed races like Asian games, not in this particular type though
Thanks, it is very interesting. No, I have never seen one, but on TV. BTW, you are very beautiful.
